Hi everybody.
I bought my Nexus in December, and some time ago I noticed that screen looks ugly on certain backgrounds, mainly gray ones. So I did a little investigation and it turned out that I was right: picture looks mostly okay on primary colors, but grays shows terrible smudging. I took a photo of it. Do you think it qualifies for a warranty repair? Any of you noticed something like that?
I attach a photo, it's out of focus on purpose, because otherwise there would be a rainbow goo on screen.
The screen doesn't look good at lower light with certain colors that's just how it is..
The smudges look like someone wiped the screen with their thumb.
Screen was cleaned before taking photo. This rainbow effect is more or less visible on any background, but gray is especially bad. Even scrolling webpages is a bit annoying, because starting from top there is a pinkish stripe, then normal, then pinkish again... Yuck.
i have the exact same problem! Gray and white is the worst, and lower backlight is worse. But I realized this is mainly the glass top's fault, while i scroll a page, i can see those sumdges staying in the same spot!, don't know whether a protecting film will help or not.
joshdu1125 so I'm not alone then. I had a protective film on screen until yesterday and removed it because I hoped it was it's fault. Turned out it's not. Contacted Samsung via email, wonder what they will say.
Handtec said that some of the first phones (first batches) have worse displays than newer batches. I already sent my phone to them to be replaced.

screen issue
looks like its more or less same problem experienced by G.Note user, like myself..

try get "screen filter" from market and lower the intensity of color to let says 30%, check that same grey image, how does it look?..
My screen is much worse than urs if u wanna see... =.="
I am starting to think this problem is universal to all Samsung devices.. Zzzz
unfortunatey this is a problem with all samsung devices i suggest getting a kernel with color control such as francos or glados. its a lot better then the color control filter app and runs super smooth , francos kernel also pretty much doubled my battery life.
rey5757 you are right, less brightness = problem more exacerbated. I you have a photo of your screen, let us see it.
amcmearty I'm using Franco's kernel right now, but tried others too, to no avail.

just go to G.Note thread in my last post, at page 65. I don even have to take "out of focus" photo to see it.
This is a problem with the screen at lower brightness levels.. it happens to just about everyone that greys and whites look bad.

My phone also has the red stripe, and white is not uniform.

The problem with this shadow thingy is that is varies greatly on difference screen.
The "Size", "Darkness", "Area" of shadow are INconsistent. Some screen have shadow on top area of screen, some have it at corners, some have it at lower bottom, some have it all over half or screen. Then some have it but barely visible(maybe this fall in perfect screen category), some have it but extremely obvious..
How is all these random quality screen fly out of Samsung?..

Found a perfect SCREEN which is Balanced at 0% brightness + 20% color intensity(screen filter):

This is what a super amoled display should be.
compare his to urs...

I received my G Pad yesterday, I noticed I have the blue line and some slight bleeding in the lower left of the screen. My whites are nice. Has anyone returned a defective one and received a replacement with no issues. Debating if I should deal with it or try again?

A picture would be nice. I didn't had the blue line on 3 of my white devices. But I think the 4th one has it. But not so obviously. It's more like a transparent line, that's a little bit brighter. Only seeing it from a really low angle. Not the front view.
On the bleeding, it depense. My device is from germany and almost everyone has it. And we think it's normal.
Reading here on XDA, people returned the devices with light bleeding. Saying it was defect. But only a really low % doesn't have light bleeding.

I would expect most G Pads to have the tiny little blue line and possibly some minor light bleed at very low light levels. Personally, I don't know why either of these would interfere with use of the tablet in normal situations. I would recommend that people who are contemplating buying a G Pad just assume that they will have these issues. If you happen to get one that doesn't have the blue line or some low-level light bleed, be happy.
Otherwise, the best bet is not to buy one if you're going to be haunted by these facts. That will free up a lot of time in the forums discussing this.

Can you install the back light bleed test app from the play store and snap a photo? I'm curious how bad it gets.

It really depends on you and what you consider acceptable. My first G Pad I took back for what I considered excessive light bleed in the top corners of the screen it also had the blue line. My 2nd one has next to no light bleed and also does not suffer from the low brightness level light bleed like some have. My 2nd one does have the blue line but to me that is not an issue I have seen it only a few times and only when using the video app watching a movie for over 30 minutes. During normal use I have never seen the blue line when I say normal use I mean pick it up for a quick check of mail, surf the web a bit watch a YouTube video or two and play a gave for a few minutes.
On my side no blue line so far, but i've got the light bleed on the bottom edge at low brightness.
Seeing so much people here sending back there tablets and receiving it with another issue, I've decided to contact LG customer care (French one). At first they asked me to send a picture off the defect, which I did... And here is the response:
We acknowledge receipt of your mail 12/23/2013.
You contact us because you found a defect in the slab on your tablet when the brightness is low.
Please note that this is not a defect but a normal phenomenon when the brightness is at minimum.
We remain at your disposal for any further request.

I'm not really happy with this answer. My first reaction was to root the device, install a custom recovery and flash the device with a descent ROM (CMB actually). I'm felling better now, since I can live with this... but IMHO it's still not "a normal phenomenon"
Cheers.
I got my HTC One recently (last Friday) and it was a perfect phone! no problems whatsoever...
Yesterday i was playing with the phone with a colourful background wallpaper from HTC and i noticed light bleeding from the top (hold it in a angle and you can see a light bar shine through like this:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/at...een-issues-uploadfromtaptalk1367129491252.jpg
It isn't that big of a deal but for a phone that costs over 500 euro's here in my country.. you expect that it is build properly and backlight bleeding on a phone at this price!?
I compared 4 HTC's in the store and they all got the same problem
GPe dims the edges of the screen, so it's harder to notice if it's there. I haven't ran sense in a while so I can't tell either, but I can't notice this light bar effect on my phone either. So it may just be that batch of phones.

Got it in in my bottom right corner... very minimal though
Wow, that's massively anal lol.
mine was the whole top screen.. but it doesn't matter, that's just HTC right..? They're known for the screen bleeding, haha..
I've been having this issue on the bottom of the display. It makes the nav buttons look funny and full-screen content is washed out.

Here's mine. Italian H3g branded:
That light bleed above is probably a bit excessive bit you guys have to realize that all LCD screens are going to have some light bleed. You can usually make it less noticeable by using a lower brightness setting. If you are really anal about the slightest amount of bleed you should really be looking into phones with AMOLED displays. That said, if the light bleed is washing out the nav bar at reasonable brightness settings you should try to get it fixed or replaced.
My M8 has some bleed on the top left corner at normal brightness and I'll notice it across the entire top if I go full brightness in a dark room. At normal brightness it doesn't bother me at all.

I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.
No issue here. Wish the screen was brighter but at least its the same as my g4

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. The pre-applied screen protector is pretty crappy, but I mean c'mon... Are you one of those guys who returns things with the smallest imperfections, or perceived imperfections in this case?

Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.
no issues
Didn't see a logo. Must be blind

Smallest imperfection? He uses the screen all the time and notices that all the time, how is that small imperfection? Also amoled screens are known for the issues he described. All screens have that issue. Just people like you are not good enough to notice it while others notice it easily.

Hi all,
Had my Pixel for a few days now and noticed what I thought was a new gradient in the background of posts in the XDA labs app, I checked the screen using one of the grey test colours and found that I'm getting a dark cloud over the bottom right hand side of my screen. I tried taking a photo with my old phone (Moto X Pure) but the camera isn't good enough at low light for it to show up, I'll try and get a photo with my DSLR when I'm back from work later today. In the mean time some quick googling has shown it's very similar to the "Dirty Screen Effect" described here: http://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/picture-quality/gray-uniformity-dirty-screen-effect-dse
Had anyone else noticed this? Do you think Google would RMA it? I've not really been bothered by the blue shift on my device so I'm slightly concerned that I might end up with a worse replacement if I do send it back
Cheers
Michael
It's a tough call, you have to ask yourself if you can live with it or not. Does it show up a lot during normal usage? Or is it just with the XDA labs app and similar applications in a low light setting with your brightness turned to like 0-10%? Or if you can see it at all times regardless of brightness settings you can contact Google tell them of the screen issue and get a RMA. Check out the replacement and compare the blue shift to your current and see if it also has the same issue as your current device. If it's better in both regards send it back, if the blue shift is a bit worse on the one and you can tolerate it and it doesn't have the bad back light uniformity you could keep it. That's what I would do personally, best of luck!
Yes, I have a similar issue. My first device had severe blue tint at any angle and Google would not replace so I returned and and reordered. The second device had only slight blue tint and is not an issue but of course has the uneven grays. The right side of the screen is much darker and there is also a dark spot around the sim tray area on the left side. I sent Google pictures and they are sending a replacement. It's only noticable in low light, looks fine at higher brightness though.
Ah I didn't realize they sent you the replacement first. That makes it a much easier decision. I'll still try and add a photo of it in the OP later today but RMA seems like the best choice. It's noticeable at lower backlight brightness and since it's winter here in the UK now the auto-brightness often drops it down to a level where it is noticeable just in normal daily use.
I get a VERY slight hint of that on a dark gray background at 5-7% brightness in a totally dark room but other than that very specific condition it's uniform otherwise.
The photo as promised unedited straight out of the camera (USB C OTG is neat). It's not quite this bad in person, if you imagine the light grey is the same shade as the dark grey in this image and the dark grey as being almost black then you get the idea, but it does show the difference between the two and it is clearly visible with the naked eye in a dark room.
The grey image I'm using is here: https://i1.wp.com/ausdroid.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/screenshot_20171022-153201.png?ssl=1
