NK2 Incoming (on 6-Jan-2015) - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...or-ota-update-but-not-until-january-6th-2015/
Seems fairly minor, with the most notable change being Towelroot getting patched.
Code:
Version Date Released
L900VPUBNK2 1/6/15
HD voice icon added
ORNL enabled
Google security patches (SSL, Towelroot, and TrustZone)
Bug fixes

That's cool. Hopefully it gets us prepared for lollipop since there's a possibility now that the international Note 2 has been confirmed for it.

Soft bricked me.
twrp file manager couldnt access data. Had to adb pull to backup.

ORNL?
What exactly is "ORNL"?

i'm guessing map data like elevation

ie, Oak Ridge National Laboratories in USA developed a way for web browsers to access additional map data such as elevation, and the ORNL feature enables Android to be able to access that info--something vaugely in that direction i'm guessing, tho that laboratory develops lots of technologies related to smart phones so using the ORNL acronym to describe any one feature is pretty lame IMHO.

A good reason not to upgrade to the new Market in Froyo

Market filters:
When a user searches or browses in Android Market, the results are filtered, and some applications might not be visible. For example, if an application requires a trackball (as specified in the manifest file), then Android Market will not show the app on any device that does not have a trackball.
The manifest file and the device's hardware and features are only part of how applications are filtered — filtering also depends on the country and carrier, the presence or absence of a SIM card, and other factors.
Changes to the Android Market filters are independent of changes to the Android platform itself. This document will be updated periodically to reflect any changes that occur.

Does anyone have any idea what the market filters are checking against?
That's not really a good reason to do anything, let alone not using 2.2

Not being able to get apps? Did you read the link? Doubtful. Uh sure. Have fun with vanilla 2.2 and 0.0 apps.
I'm sorry, did you read your own link? If you had scrolled down, it shows several examples of what can be filtered. The filters are implemented by the application developer themselves, and if they don't, they still show up in the market.
Besides, filtering by the application has been in Android since 2.0. Any application that deems a device incapable of running it (for example, a lack of a light sensor) can stop itself from running.
some kind of filter (the ones I've heard of so far are incompatible screen resolution, unverified builds, and protected apps) is already being applied to 2.1 in the AOSP build. I couldnt see Yelp, the Android Community and TMZ apps for whatever reason

Oh yeah, how suspicious. French people couldn't possibly prefer apps in French and people with that new Dell pad thing probably still want SMS and contact apps.
Yeah
so you are saying not upgrade to 2.2 because marketplace will filter apps for our phone, but stick with 2.1 because it doesn't?
well genius, why don't you go and install http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.yelp.android on your phone and let us know how that 'no filtering' works out for you.
When I was running my Vougue we ran into this problem as well, its not a big deal at all. from what I remember it was checking about the build.prob and screen size that is setup in your startup. what I used to do was set my phone to my the specs for the G1, then install the apps after adjusting the density to fit everything on screen and then reboot using factory startup. it worked pretty well for most of the apps since many only blocked off whatever border the developer had.
heres the problem though but with the pace we are going it wont come up for a while, once we decide we have a rom stable enough to flash we lost the abilty to change the settings since WM is copletely gone and no haret was used. I switched over to the Touch Pro and we had the exact same problem which was solved in the EXACT way but we were not flashed still(TP2 still has a LOOOONG way to go sad to say), kept the touch pro 2 for only a few weeks before they replaced my Sprint Line TP with a Touch pro 2 due to all the TP1 problems and i'm still saddened by the slow progress. I am a developer myself and even an avid budsmoker and was still able to help out. now Refer has done a great job but from my understanding he is just doing most changes to the Android Filesystem, theirs a couple other guys working on the kernels which would be were all the hardware problems are going to be fixed from. no matter what build we use something in the kernel is either not right, or we dont have the driver in place for Android itself and since we have few Hardware level developers working on these things it seems to be low progress.

[Update: Not Just Samsung] Exploit Could Force Factory Reset On Many Android Phones
Published on September 25th, 2012Written by: Cameron SummersonNextSkip to ResponsesPrevUpdate 2:*This exploit probably won't work on most*Galaxy S III's as long as they have the most recent OTA update, as*we demonstrate on video here.Update:*This issue is, unsurprisingly, a lot more nuanced than the video here lets on. The bug is based in the stock Android browser, is in fact quite old, and has been patched in more recent builds of Android - this is probably why Nexus devices running the most recent OTAs are unaffected. The fact is, this is not a Samsung problem, it's an old Android problem that has been known about for some time. More recent versions of Android avoid the wipe issue, but unpatched devices (like some Samsung phones) may still be vulnerable.Ouch. This is not the type of PR Samsung needs right now. Apparently a new vulnerability has been found that can force a factory reset with zero user interaction on many Samsung phones running TouchWiz. The bug is found within the stock TW browser, which allows direct execution of dialer codes like the one used for this exploit. This code is easily embedded into HTML, so one tap of a malicious link will reset the phone instantly. Other browsers, like Chrome, Dolphin, etc. aren't affected, so we highly recommend switching if you've been using the stock TouchWiz browser. At this time it's unclear exactly how many Samsung phones are affected, but so far users have been able to reproduce the issue on the*Galaxy S II*(assume all variants), the*Galaxy SAdvance, Galaxy Beam, and Galaxy Ace, among others. From what we're hearing, the international GSIII variant*should*be unaffected, and the AT&T version was updated with a patch for this very exploit last week. It's unknown at this time whether or not the*Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile variants are susceptible. We'll keep you updated as more information comes to light.[The Verge,*Engadget]Categories:*News,*SamsungTags:*exploit,*factory reset,*Samsung,*TouchWiz,*vulnerabilitesShare Article** **Save to InstapaperNextBack to TopPrevMobile ThemeONOFF1 queries in 379.8 ms

I found a test page on neowin, that uses the same exploit but shows ur IMEI instead to see whether you're vulnerable
http://haggistech.co.uk/USSDtest/
My CM9 **IS** vulnerable. WTF!
So I did the "test" website and if it is correct me on Eugene's asop build are at risk as well...hope the website is wrong.
Funny how before all the hackers (well the ones that are looking to exploit people, not the hardware for a benefit) were going after your pc, and now it's just as easy to go after your phone. I still don't know why someone would want to do this to a bunch of phones, but people are weird sometimes
It is kind of freaky knowing our phone is vulnerable, but then again, any time something new comes out, someone is going to try and hack it in a negative way. Grr, why people? Just develop ROM's, not exploits

I'm assuming AOKP is no exception to this? Basically anywhere the default browser exists right??
Edit : Tested the website and it popped open a dialer but displayed the digits needed to pop open the IMEI..does that still mean I'm vulnerable? AOKP Build 3.

i tried all the browsers for android, Stock, Chrome, Firefox, Dopehin, etc
They are all vulnerable, except for OPERA!!!
so, if you're the types that are paranoid, I'll suggest you to make Opera as the default browser in your phone

Installing DialerOne you block the exploit, infact android will ask you wich dialer use, so you just have to choose the new one.
The original dialer remains there to be used normally.
Waiting for new from my loved developer :good:

the hack / exploit / vulnerability only works if your browser is not patched
just avoid using a vulnerable browser then you wont have anything to worry about.
OPERA browser is not affected, tested them all.

Are you sure it's just the browser? Has anyone tried using a ripped browser from the apparently patched S3 then? I'll give it a shot now.

From what I read the phone is only vulnerable if your IMEI shows on the phone dialer, correct. If so Dolphin is not vulnerable. Tested with latest version.

Google Field Trip (APK for non-US users)

I recently discovered this app, some of you have already have it. For those who haven't tried it, go try it, it's really cool.
From Google Play Store:
Field Trip is your guide to the cool, hidden, and unique things in the world around you. Field Trip runs in the background on your phone. When you get close to something interesting, it pops up a card with details about the location. No click is required. If you have a headset or bluetooth connected, it can even read the info to you.
Field Trip can help you learn about everything from local history to the latest and best places to shop, eat, and have fun. You select the local feeds you like and the information pops up on your phone automatically, as you walk next to those places.
Currently, it is only available for US users, so just go to Play Store to download this.
For non-US users, here is the APK.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/itbo9xxamq018hj/com.nianticproject.scout-1.apk
Would the apk work for non US users since I would assume the information is US based at the moment? I guess it would be cool if a trip was planned. I installed it and turned the notifications to low and I have only gotten one thing pop-up. Very interesting if you like history.

I just installed it (I'm in the UK), and scrolled on the map to London, and it shows loads of cards. So there definitely is information for outside the USA.
Edit: there doesn't seem to be much outside of London though.
Remember this app can track your every move it runs hidden in the background with no way to turn it off. And yes it is a battery hog..

[Q] Parental Control

So I want to buy my 9 year old son a Nexus 7 after seeing how he uses my computer for his project research, school math challenges, etc. I also see the value of buying him appropriate books on Amazon as he has a requirement to read at least 20 minutes a day. Furthermore I also noticed how he takes our mobile devices, takes photos and experiments with various filters (to a point the mother uses one of his creation as her profile picture). That is the innocent and good side of things ....
I however cannot see any build in parental control functionality in Android that will assist me in keeping it as clean as possible in terms of content visibility on the Play Store, Internet browsing and managing time.
What are my options? I am willing to pay extra if needed if there is something a parent has used successfully.
I think you can create for him a limited profile, but being that I'm not sure, my youngest is 17

I cannot seem to find anything in that regard - this is very sad. I was hoping I can give him a Android based device but there seem to be no parental control function on Android (never mind anything build in). I keep on snooping around ...
One of the problems I also cannot seem to find anything is because I am using CM11 on my Samsung S3 which does not have the multi-user functionality (not to be confused with profiles).
http://asia.cnet.com/how-to-set-up-parental-controls-for-android-62222756.htm basically sums it up. So in other words I have to stay stock with 4.3 > otherwise I loose out.
There are Users or Profiles or something like that in Kit Kat. I don't have my tablet with me so I can't direct you how to do it. But yes you can make one for "Son's Name" and he can only access specific apps.

Root ? To be or not to be

Sorry but I'm quite new at galaxy staff or to be accurate in android
Why should I root? I understand that this not a must but still many users doing so
In its I fully understand why to jailbreak the devices mostly because of apple strict methodology or strategy but here with android?
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk
My reasons:
remove software I don't use,
install better ROM,
backup apps,
add all the apps to multi-window,
use multi-window plus for 4 windows on the screen,
use location spoofer to watch local baseball teams on MLB app.
My main reason is to debloat it, make a backup, and install a ROM that is faster and cleaner than the stock one.
The general philosophy is, if you need to ask you don't need to root...
It can cause issues for people if the don't know what they're doing and is likely to void your warranty.
It is thought best to leave it stock until you have tested your device to make sure it's working right and won't need warranty service or you may end up paying twice for your new toy...
In a nutshell, rooting means to gain root access to your system. You are able to access, alter and delete your actual OS.
This has many benefits for those who like to modify and theme their devices. It also allows backups of the current firmware and allows altering the base functions of your tablet like speed of CPU, governing power usage and replacing the stock recovery/kernel with altered ones that give more access and choices.
However Samsung, in their infinite wisdom (and the influence of the almighty dollar), decided too many people were screwing things up by altering their devices and have now added Knox, a security feature that has no relevance to most lay users...
As it's main objective is to provide a safe shell to use the OS, any breach triggers a Knox warranty void eFuse(?) that they have been using against people when they try to take in for warranty.
I am not trying to be rude but at some point all of us were new to rooting. I am still learning but really like the straight up android experience. I do love the killer features on this tab, though. So you can root and still have the multi windows and pen windows and even the 4 window multi screen? If this is the case I am very happy to hear that. I would like to root but will probably wait a little while so I can enjoy a "new" experience on this beast.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
If I were to root, it would be to get all apps compatible with pen window and multiwindow. Also to use gmd to get gestures similar to windows/ipad. Foldermount is great for moving app/game data to the sd card. Adblock to block ads. I still havent pulled the trigger because of knox but its really tempting!

Rooting by itself doesn't change tablet features, doesn't add more features. It gives you power to make changes. After rooting you have exact same tablet. But now you can install apps that make all apps available in multi-window or add 4 way option or freeze installed apps that you don't need. You can install stock based ROM (see CleanROM) that is very smooth and fast. But have to be careful, to know what you're doing.
That's true, what I meant was , can you root , load a custom rom and still have the multi windows and spen window? Because a true google android experience would be amazing with the cool Sammy features we have stock.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
Clean rom is based on touchwiz, I don't believe there are any stock roms for this device yet. If you install a stock aosp rom, you will lose all or most of those features
