Apologies in advance if this is more appropriate in the Themes & Apps section, however this is a question so I thought it should be here.
I've been looking at how to customise a couple of things in TouchWiz to achieve the look I want but also balancing functionality.
Specifically, I'm trying to do the following:
1) Different wallpapers set up for each screen.
I have looked at Multi Picture Live Wallpaper but based on what the dev. has advised, this does not appear to work on ICS so that rules it out at the moment.
I'm also not necessarily keen on using an alternate launcher (tried Nova) because removing the S-Pen doesn't trigger anything when removed with Nova as the launcher - and that's something I'd still like to have working.
2) The icons on the bottom row / dock of the launcher. I would have thought they were customisable but they don't appear to be. The instructions that I found suggested you need to open your app drawer -> Menu -> Edit and you should be able to drag/replace items in the dock area. However, when I try to do this it doesn't seem possible.
For context, I was inspired by this: http://mycolorscreen.com/2012/11/23/white-serenity/ and want to take some of the ideas and apply them to my Note2.
Does anyone know how to do what I'm after?
Thoughts appreciated.

Can't answer your 1st question, because I don't really care much about wallpapers, but in answer to your second question, just long press on an icon in the dock and you can move it off and back on the dock. If you move other icons over the top of existing doc icons, you can create a stack.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave, had tried long pressing already but it does nothing for me.
Pressing and holding icons on the homescreen brings up a message box that says "You can resize widgets, and reposition widgets, shortcuts, and folders by pressing the menu key and tapping Edit."
However, when doing so - the dock disappears.

You long press on the icons in the dock, not the homescreen.

Thanks, apologies if I was unclear but that does not work either -tried the obvious stuff first.
Is it working for you?
The only thing I can think of is that my rom may be slightly modified by my carrier (Optus, Australia) as it has some a couple of bloat ware apps and something they have done is affecting it.?
Regardless, I had a play with Nova launcher again and given how customisable it is I'm okay with giving up the S-pen pop up menu.
Still trying to figure out multiple wallpapers bit may have to compromise on that too.
Cheers for your responses.

Thanks, I had been trying to get that working but the best I could do was getting it to display one wallpaper even though I had 5 set up.
After realising i had to also change the scroll wallpaper option in the *nova launcher settings* rather than just the Multi picture live wallpaper settings it worked correctly. Now I have multiple different backgrounds displaying.
Appreciate the responses with help guys.
(Still can't edit dock icons on the stock launcher though -which is odd -but as I'm using nova now I'm not overly concerned. )
Interesting that you can't remove the dock icons - I do believe some people had the same issue with Optus branded Galaxy S IIIs. What a bizarre carrier customisation.
Best bet is to flash an unbranded stock ROM.

With Optus version here too. same problem, can't find any resolution...... Is the Optus customisation team high? Why would they remove something so intuitive, so simple, and so necessary!?

Worse. Incompetent.
( I kid, I kid. )
Nice to know I'm not the only one experiencing it though.
Only resolution if you want to use TouchWiz and have an Optus handset seems to be flashing another rom.
I haven't run across anything else that is a show stopper for me though and as I'm getting what I want with Nova Launcher (with the exception of the pop-up S-Pen menu when the stylus is removed), I'm reasonably happy.
This is how it's working out so far - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35096760&postcount=821
Edit: Thanks Onslaught - if they've done it on another handset model as you've suggested it's either a silly oversight or a silly decision.

Hi folks
I contacted Samsung about not being able to change the dock. This is the response I got:
“In response to the customer’s enquiries, unfortunately we you can’t change the dock icons as they are locked in, this is actually due to a patent issue we had with another manufacturer. This is not actually a fault of the handset but a design specification. It will not be changed in the future.
In relation to replacing Google Chrome as the Internet browser, that is also not possible. The user can drag the app onto the home page so he can more easily access it. Again, the dock icons can’t be changed or replaced.”
So if the problem is limited to Optus handsets in Australian then I'm thinking this answer is a bit of BS? Anyone have one of these on Telstra? Vodafone? and have the same problem? I'm assuming everyone else outside Australian can change the dock icons?
Thanks
One of my colleagues purchased a Note 2 via grey import (thinkofus.com)
and hers does not have the same restriction so it definitely does not apply to everyone. Not sure about other carriers in Australia though.
If you have root access you can unlock the dock icon edit function by going to /system/csc/other.xml and find

And change the true to false

I bought a Telstra branded version yesterday and it has the same stupid restriction, so I guess it's an Aussie telco thing. I have no idea why carriers think this sort of thing is a good idea, it just hobbles good technology, and annoys people at the same time.
Anyway I flashed a generic Singapore 4.1.2 firmware today and it fixed everything up (as well as getting rid of some Telstra bloatware).

If you use Nova Launcher you lose the S-Pen pop up menu? Which menu, the one where you take it out of the phone or the one where you can make a quick note? I'm getting one soon and wanted to use Nova Launcher.

Thank you, you're awesome - I've decided that I'm actually happier using the functionality of Nova Launcher but really appreciate you posting a solution as there are clearly other Aussies who wanted this fixed as well.

The Quick Note pop-up appears on Nova Launcher but the extra home page that appears and takes focus when you remove the S-Pen (only via the Default TouchWiz Launcher) is lost. On reflection, I don't find it that useful as it seems to be more of an introductory / landing page for the S-Pen and when I remove the stylus it's literally just to take a note - which I haven't done much of to be honest. On the additional landing page that appears when the S-Pen is removed, the Quick Note pop-up appears on top of this as well. So in my opinion, not losing much at all by using Nova Launcher.
First screenshot is in Nova Launcher, second is in TouchWiz (already closed out of the Quick Note pop-up).
I just got a virgin/optus Note 2 and I am trying to do the same thing by changing the icon in the dock but can't.
Curious thought on why some devices can change the icon and others can't... For those which can, is it a different model to the GT-N7105?? Maybe an early version?

It appears to be whatever is in the Australian ROMs.
The model isn't necessarily different as grey imports are technically the same.
Internationally imported handsets do not have this restriction and I can confirm I've observed this myself with other Note 2's from colleagues / friends.
So basically, either flash a new ROM, use the suggestion from Beeva in this thread (requires root) or use a different launcher to get around this.
Hi there,
Just got a new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. There's a line of apps installed below the page/panel indicator on the home screens, with a bunch of (to me) ill chosen apps. But I can't drag them off the screen to delete them, like I can the ones above the page indicator. I can't find any mention of what this apparently separate panel is called to search better.
Of interest, are people happy with their purchase of one of these? So far I'm finding it pretty ordinary - not horrible, just ordinary...

Just drag the apps on the lower part of your home screen to the upper part where it says delete. then you can go to your apps and drag them to the lower part of your home screen to add them in the dock
If you're saying about the lock screen then I don't know
Hi!
I'm pretty happy with the tab 10.1! With the latest OTA update it runs even smoother! The runtime is great, can handle up to 5 days with daily usage without charging. I received my leather case today, a 360° case.. I can put it horizontal or vertical and it "wakes up" when i open the case.
With that prize its an absolutely recommendation.

Hi there,
On the default home page, there's two large widgets on the top (weather and news). Below that there's a Google search bar. Below that there's a row of shortcuts. These all behave normally. Below that there's the page/panel indicator (telling you which home page you're on) and then at the bottom there's another row of shortcuts. It's that last, bottom row that I'm having trouble with. They don't seem to act normally - I can't drag them off to delete as normal. They appear to be hardwired. They are not the choice I would select and I want to change them.
Are other people able to delete these shortcuts?
Thanks!

I have the same problem. I'm tired of reading the answer "click and hold then drag it up". It seems to be the stock answer on all forums. They won't move! No matter what I do, the ridiculous row of apps bottom most on the screen is stuck. There's no help for this in the help app/widget. Someone must know how to unlock these darn things. I want to replace them with ones I use regularly.

Qranparoger,
Unfortunately that is the correct answer of click and hold and move. I just did it to mine and I can move two of the three apps I have in the bottom row. The only one that cannot move is APPS. My SETTINGS and FIREFOX can both be moved to the main screen above the bottom row.
My tab is rooted, but uses stock rom. There is nothing special about what I have done. I checked settings to see if I had changed a display or security function but I do not see anything. I do remember when I first got the tab that I too was having problems. But I do remember solving it and removing the bottom row (except APPS) and rearranging the icons or deleting the icons.
It think that maybe it might be in the APPLICATION MANAGER in SETTINGS that you "Turn Off" the app and it might vanish from the bottom of the screen. Again, I cannot remember how I did it but it can be done.

Latest ROM update - still can't change the apps. My tab isn't rooted, and I couldn't be bothered to now. I don't necessarily want to "turn off" the apps, just not use my precious home screen space. Anyway, I solved the problem by buying a Nexus. Yep, free Samsung is just collecting dust, piece of rubbish... Before anyone rages on me, there's a bunch of reasons I didn't like the Samsung, not just this one thing.

Hello guys!
New to (posting in) the forum so unfortunately I cant post this in the developers topic
But I'm hoping someone could help answer a few questions for me
I finally got around to rooting/unlocking/rom-ing my Koodo T989D
Decided to give Hellkat a try as my first custom rom, and so far it is a huge improvement over JB
So many little annoyances now solved
However with that there are a few things that have cropped up that I'd like to change if possible
First is probably the most important thing,
having used stock Samsung android for the last few years, I grew very accustomed to being able to swipe left and right over contacts in order to text/call them, probably my favourite feature really
I understand that samsungs dialer/contact app are very intergrated into touchwiz but thought I'd ask if anyone knew a dialer that works well and has this feature that I could try out?
Second is the camera, I know recently that stock google camera apps have gone to a very 'clean' interface
however when I am trying to take a picture randomly, I find it far easier to change useful settings if they are shown constantly overlayed over the image (as opposed to pop-ups)
one thing I was impressed with by samsung was their camera apps customizable settings buttons (allowing choice in where and what to display)
Can someone recommend a camera app that has settings overlays or better yet that allow customizable settings buttons?
Third is more specific to the HellKat rom I think..
I've noticed when texting that if I go back to change a word (spelling check) it comes up with a pop-up with a few suggestions and also the option to add to dictionary
However suggestions also pop up in the suggestion bar above the keyboard
I would prefer to only have the suggestion bar, and to not have the pop-up at all
I have tried turning off the 'Spell checker' option in input settings but then neither show up
Is there a way to turn off the pop-up? or will installing google keyboard get rid of it?
Fourth is that I found when typing a recipient number into a new text, in 'Hellkat dark theme' the font is black on black so that you are unable to see the numbers you are typing
not a huge issue but maybe someone can let the developer know
Fifth is just that I am wondering if there is a 'lockscreen widget' (like the one for the camera) that is a dialer screen to place a call from the lockscreen
Thanks to whoever responds and I understand if you are not able to answer some of these, any help is graciously accepted
Will try to provide any additional info needed
Thanks!

P.S. pic is the spell check pop-up i'd like to remove!

I just got my Note 4 and one of the biggest things that is bugging me (besides the delayed menu button) is not being able to have my installed apps display in an alphabetical list. Is there anything that can fix this?
I found an app calle 'App Drawer' but I am now unable to remove the default 3x4 grid icon on the bottom right which makes having 2 icons for different app drawers incredibly annoying!

Hey Dreyzzyn,
Did you ever find a solution for this problem? I just upgraded from the Galaxy S3 to Note 4 and very much miss my apps in "alphabetical list" mode. So much easier hitting the starting letter of the app you want and BAMN...a listing of apps with that letter pop up. But this Note 4 is confusingly not allowing me to do it.
Thanks in advance. Thought this phone was supposed to be so powerful...yet I find I'm missing my S3.

Get a launcher!
Note 4 stock does not allow listing of apps, to do this you must install a launcher. I use Apex but there are many out there. Just install it and pick set your apps to list view. As far as lag, to get rid of it just set Window, Transition and Animator scale to "off" under Developer options and you should be good to go. I've done that since the S3 days no problem and phone gets waay faster.

I think you misread the original post as he's looking for an "alphabetical list'. This is not possible on the Note 4 as it was on Note 3 and Note 2. If you think it's available please post of screenshot of that instead of just showing that you can sort apps alphabetically which every version of android can do. Two, totally different things. I've posted what an "alphabetical list" looks like in Apex since you can't do it in touch wiz. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31104043/screenshot.JPG

Ahh I see said the blind man. I wasn't aware of the difference from list view and order.
Yes get a third party launcher.. I use Nova.. but like the fozzir said theres Apex and many others that are great.
Hello, I like TouchWiz but I want to have some changes. I tried Zero Launcher and kind of like it. The only issue I have is that it does not switch between portrait and landscape modes. Anybody knows how to do it? I have turning on and switching works under apps such as those for pdf viewing. However, on home screen, I cannot get the orientation turning works.
Anybody knows how to set the theme to IOS-like?
Some launchers make it an option to hold portrait or rotate when in the launcher, did you check for that option in your launcher settings?

'Yes'...and then what? Now I'm curious too! What did you find on Zero?
I haven't downloaded a single launcher for my Note Pro yet and one of the reasons for that is that as a beginner with those apps, I need better explanations than I see at the app store and the developers' websites offer no additional help. Most of them don't even bother to answer an e-mail. That said, I am grateful to you all here for having taught me so many of the right questions to ask; that's another thing that beginners seldom know.
I hope you'll come back soon and tell us what you found. I almost never use 'portrait' view on my tablet, won't download apps for it that insist on using it and can see no use for a launcher that would give me trouble getting out of it. I'm still shopping for the right launcher and I come to every thread here that mentions one.
Thanks again for a very good question.
The only way you're going to find a Launcher you like is to install them and try them. If you don't like it, uninstall it and you're right back where you started. Installing a launcher isn't going to mess anything up, so just try some. Try all of them. You might like more than one, decide to keep changing them, and you'll never get tired of your tablet.

Well that's reassuring! In fact I was wondering if I would 'mess anything up' if I did that. The Note Pro is not only my first big tablet: it is my first tablet ever. Unless we also call my Galaxy Note 4 phone a tablet as it does function as one and still I got that not long before the Note Pro. I've lived out in the boonies for over 30 years and got used to the bare minimum in 'under-served' parts of the country. I didn't get greedy till last year and Verizon helped me to upgrade my old flip phone and join the 21st century. I've about worn out my laptop and needed to diversify and of course I'm still having to learn a completely different kind of OS and hardware to do that so I can treat my new friends well. That's taking me a while, as you can tell, but it's not for lack of effort.
Is there some app in the playstore that makes switching back and forth between launchers a little more......streamlined? Should I keep my TouchWiz default whilst I'm doing all the experimenting until I find one I want to keep for a while? I got the cautious mindset from older PC's and hangups or blue screens when I tried to run something too big, and too new, for my hardware, especially, in my experience, when it came to graphics so I really have been afraid of getting into trouble. If I tried switching my whole GUI a half dozen times in one night on a Vista laptop, I'd be reinstalling the whole system by morning, lol.
And then there is OP's question: I admit I rather thought that any developers regularly updating their launchers would be adding the 'rotating' flexibility by default, particularly as large-screen tablets have come out. A lot of apps I've tried (and later dumped) haven't caught up with that, of course, but I didn't think a popular launcher, the principle function of which is the display, would be among them. Now I know what to call it, thanks to OP, I'll look for it on the list of 'features' in the playstore.
There's probably launcher managers out there, I recall using one once a few years back but since it's easy enough to dive into Settings-General-Default Applications-Home and change it I prefer not to load yet another application that has the potential to stay cached/memory resident just for that purpose.
Trying out different launchers won't impact the device much, when you switch back to stock Touchwiz based launcher all of your widgets and icon layouts will be there waiting for you. My advice is to just do one launcher at a time, if you don't like it uninstall it rather than collecting several and switching between them . . the more you load the system down the more risk you have should a launcher you decide to not use has services associated with it that still run or cache themselves in the background taking up resources.
As for screen rotation, the rotation of home screens between portrait and landscape is not my cup of tea. Widgets scale when you rotate to try to adjust for the new aspect ratio that rotation forces upon them and this results in stretch/compression that is unappealing to me. What I use is a rotation manager like Ultimate Rotation Control to force "auto landscape" mode such that my tablet can be used in either landscape orientation (home button up or down) while preserving the ability of all other apps to have the freedom to go portrait or landscape.

OK. I got Nova today and I'll work with it a while before I think of trying another. I might put another one on my phone so I can learn how to use two of them at once. Now I have a couple of 'dumb questions:'
Do you mean locking just the Home screen so when you hit that button it takes you right back to landscape without you having to physically turn the tablet into position and slant it forward in a quick dip (at least I have to do) to make it go back to landscape? Some apps I've downloaded not only insist on going to portrait mode, they hang up my orientation for a few seconds after I've hit that Home button so then I always have to pick the tablet up and do that dip towards me to make it cooperate.
The few that were especially bad about this, I dumped. Clean Master pulled that on me with its battery checker whenever the screen was idle for a while and I got tired of hitting the back button to get my home page back. - especially since I can't see where it is at night and don't always hit it right.
I don't use a lot of lights at night and I know that's the main problem. It's too many years of working by lantern light at night and saving my solar power for the computer and even though I've moved and have grid electricity the last few years now, I'm still way out in the sticks, no 'light pollution,' and can't change the habit of letting it go ahead and be dark at night. Brightly lit rooms when it's 2 in the morning just feel weird and always remind me of my wild youth when night spots would hit the lights at closing time to shoo everybody out. (it worked too, didn't it?)
Now there's a 'widget' I'd like to find, or an app that follows me around: an alternative to that back button. It illuminates only when I hit it right so I'm constantly tapping around the general area trying to find it. I suppose it would drain my battery a little faster if it were lit up all the time but I really do need a way to solve this, since I'm not going to cure myself of all-nighters with my beloved machines. I've been looking at some likely little apps for that today, made for those whose buttons are worn out or not working, but I haven't found one yet that's been updated in the last year. Have you any recommendations? This is just for my tablet. My Note 4 is small enough so it's harder to get it wrong - and I got the white model and a lurid fuschia otter box case so I'm bound to see it easily.
Next dumb question: is there a way to access the Settings faster than apps button and scrolling through the apps in order to get to it? That's as good as saying I've downloaded too many apps if it takes me that long and I fear that's the case. Maybe a launcher will allow me to put a link to it on the Home screen? As you've said, it's a more economical use of resources to go to Settings and do my own errands instead of installing yet another app; I just wish getting there didn't take me so long. TouchWiz isn't going to let me put that icon among the A's.
Samsung (at least according to them when I asked them) won't let me put more than one language on my GUI - well if it's the same alphabet and I give up accents and tone marks, I can be creative in naming my app folders but that's all. They said I had to change the whole interface if I tried to enable another language. (They also offer Thai but discriminate against Lao so I had to go download a whole different application for that keyboard! I had to do the same just to enable one Welsh circumflex. Ridiculous. ) I can't even think in just one language! My dogs and cats are fluent by now in at least 5 of them. Are launchers a bit more open-minded? I understand I can run individual applications in as many languages as they offer, for they are 'self-contained' but sometimes, I like to change names, menus, options or widgets to different things just to keep my mental edge. I can't even display documents I've imported to the tablet that are in languages not available on my Samsung list. I have the Hancom Office and that has the fonts for them but they won't display and I sure can't edit them in those languages. Is there some simple way to manage this dilemma that I'm missing?
Best to not take this thread off topic . . suggest you ask the other questions in a separate thread that you create in the troubleshooting or general forum.
I will say this - the ultimate rotation control application does allow you to force ANY application into an orientation of your chosing which includes the launcher. So yes, if I'm in an app that's portrait and I'm holding the tablet in that portrait orientation when I hit the HOME button my tablet goes into landscape due to the rotation control app overriding the orientation sensors in the tablet.

Good. Thanks. I found that app just now. I will post a thread about the language mix-ups. I just joined here yesterday and don't know my way around yet, but the first thing I noticed is that your membership here covers the globe and I can't possibly be the only one here who's run into this problem.
I have another rotation-related question and it's probably a dumb one too but it occurred to me because my Note 4 and my Note Pro had different rotation issues and I chose different ways of fixing them. For the tablet, I installed Ultimate Rotate Controller because I only wanted to lock my Home sceen in landscape. On the other hand, I didn't want my phone to spontaneously switch to landscape when I was holding it, as it often did, especially if I got a call because the landscape view made those 'accept' and 'reject' buttons harder to see and harder to hit right. So, I went into Settings, Display and unchecked the box for screen rotation to stop that. It worked. So my question is:
Is this kind of thing actually set by the device 'Settings' and not by the Touchwiz launcher? If you've set your device to disallow screen rotation, wouldn't that hold no matter what launcher you used? Or not?

Using system settings or the quick settings toggle for rotation in the notification tray is a system wide lock of rotation. If your goal is to lock a launcher to a specific rotation then look within the settings of the launcher itself. Some launchers will have a setting to lock orientation, nova does for example. Doing it within the launchers own settings only affects home screen and application tray, not other screens like the call or dialer screen.

Thanks for clarifying that! Going to system settings looked like the only option to try, long before I started thinking of launchers - or even thinking of Touchwiz as a separate entity. (the Note 4 was my first Android phone too ) It seemed worth the trouble to go back and allow that rotation again at my leisure, when I wasn't doing something risky like driving down the road. Mother always happens to call me when I'm driving back from town on dark mountain roads, so that was about the first thing I learned to do on my phone. Verizon has recently informed me that I can now make and receive calls on my tablet, which brings me to a question only peripherally related, pun intended:
Would you direct me to a thread here, if you happen to know of one, discussing appropriate headsets, something more up to date, for my phone and tablet? I don't know what to call them or the names of the best brands. I only have a 6-year-old little ear piece that I got for my old flip phone and almost never used and it may not be up to the job for these newer devices.
I saw some games to play with your cats on the playstore last night that you use your phone to control - and then your cats get to jump all over your tablet. If you can do that much, could you also affect the screen orientation of your tablet with your phone?
OP, have you tried this launcher: Live Launcher? I saw it on SlideME tonight and it has the 3D effects. It's free.
