Stuck on Checking for updates screen - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I managed to block the url and prevented the update from happening, but the next screen says "Checking for updates" and simply just won't go any further.

Thanks, it took a lot of retries to get past that screen. I found out that I'm running on "51.1.1.0" and I got the first root, superuser (shell + beatbox), and beatbox to install. . My next problem is that I'm stuck on the white Amazon logo(loading screen) after "adb reboot recovery".
When I first tried to push the update.zip to /cache, it would say access denied. Then I proceeded to push recovery.img to /sdcard/ instead. After I repeated the entire process, it no longer says access denied when I push update.zip, however, after "adb reboot recovery" it would simply restart and hang at the first logo screen. I'm not sure what I did wrong. If pull the plug and start it back up, it would still say version 51.1.1.0

read this, your box most probably has an updated partition that is blocking downgrades,

Thanks, that blocking downgrade partition and also downloading the wrong recovery.img didn't help too much. XD
I got it all sorted out. thanks.

Could I plug the stick into my computer and have it update that way - then plug it back into my TV?

>>GUIDE<<
This guide will work to root the stock ROM. None of that automated stuff where you don't know what's going on. This guide will explain it step by step and you will actually know what's going on when you root a ROM
If you want to boot into a recovery image, simple use:
fastboot boot recovery.img
Note: You'll have to find the correct recovery.img file for your phone!!
Ok i unlocked the bootloader but when I input step 2 It says error: device not found? Everything worked normally?? What gives?

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed and you have USB debugging enabled.
If you are on Win 7 x64, hook up your phone to your computer, boot into the bootloader, and check out Device Manager (right click My Computer, Properties, Device Manager).
If you see in "Other Devices" a device called Android 1.0 (I can't remember off the top of my head), right click it, update drivers. Tell Windows you want to browse for the drivers, click to see the list of drivers you already have installed, and scroll down to find the Samsung Android Phone or whatever it's called.

your drivers probably arent installed properly. download PDA net and use it on your computer and it should install the drivers for you

Same here. And I did install PDAnet prior to attemping this so that I would have the correct drivers.
I have tried this on 2 different computers and I keep getting the same error. When I try to do "adb root" it will start daemon and then it will fail.
It keeps saying "Error: Device Not Found"
same error as everyone else..
"adbd cannot run as root in production builds"
I noticed my bootloader says unlocked...is that good?

Hey guys,
I can't seem to boot straight into boot.cdma.img. Soon after this command, the phone boots (doesn't make it to the ROM boot animation), then reboots, then goes into the ROM. When I try "adb root" I get the "production" error message. I have a Verizon CDMA/LTE Galaxy Nexus and I'm connecting it to Mac OS X. Thoughts?
Detailed explanation below for those curious...
Thanks everyone!
1. Boot phone into bootloader
2. Terminal: fastboot oem unlock (say yes to prompt, then return to bootloader)
3. Terminal: fastboot boot.cdma.img
4. Phone reboots, but doesn't make it to the ROM boot animation before it reboots again (I know this because it goes black for a second and vibrates slightly)
5. Phone boots into stock ROM, where I quickly dismiss all prompts and move to the settings menu to enable USB debugging
6. Terminal: adb root (Error message: "adbd cannot run as root in production builds")
7. I confirm that I don't have root by loading up Superuser and attempting to update binaries, where I'm told that it has failed the "Gain root..." step.
EDIT: Added phone / computer details.

I know their network was down from around 6am EST to Noon EST. And last night on some cities on the west coast.
I actually lost 3g data for that time as well.

I had the exact same problem where the phone reboots before it loads into boot.cdma.img, followed by the "production builds" error (as in your steps 4-6)
What worked was going back to bootloader, and running "fastboot boot boot.cdma.img" again
It loaded very quickly. When i ran "adb root" it actually said that the device was already rooted or something similar. The proceeding steps went very smoothly.
Hope this helps

I can confirm this. You need to be in bootloader to see the device driver error. It will show a Android 1.0 with an exclamation mark over it. I believe the device is a labeled as a storage drive or something similar (its not under "Android Phone")
Follow the above instructions to apply the SAMSUNG drivers
Just wanted to say thanks for this. I am fairly new to this but this seemed a lot less complicated.
Just one thing, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't run the adb root command until reading some more and finding that I had to enable USB debugging then reboot again. Hope that helps someone.
Thanks again all.
Also, how do you unroot the phone after using this method?
How to do on mac
I am new to doing this on Mac. I know that it is kind of the same but what is different when I am doing this on a Mac as apposed to a PC?

any idea why this happens? I rooted 3 phones with this method. The first one went smoothly. The second two went through the reboots. In one case, I actually loaded an odin to get it back to the boot animation, otherwise I was stuck on the unlocked Google screen. Would be nice to know what I might be doing before I root someone else's phone.

Does following this guide erase your phone? When it says boot the CDMA.img, I'm thinking it's going to replace the already installed image with a stock version that has root.
Or am I completely missing the mark here? I read what the guide wrote, but it doesn't really say if it's going to replace my stock image or what's going to happen.
BUMP?
The file linked on that thread is 404'd. Also, does this work on 4.0.4? I want to root but learn at the same time so I want to avoid using the toolkit. Does the toolkit work on 4.0.4? Thanks.
i ran into a little problem idk what it is this is the first time i run into this problem. i enter the first command prompt into terminal i think its
./fastboot-mac oem unlock and all it says is:
./fastboot-mac: operation not permitted
i don't know what I'm doing wrong help??

[Q] Major issues re-rooting

I've been trying to re-root my phone since late last night, and have had nothing but problems. I've searched all over the internet, and tried anything that I thought would apply to my situation in the slightest.
I originally downgraded from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3 and rooted my phone using the method in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990
I ran Revolutionary, ClockworkMod, and SuperUser. Everything worked perfect the first time around. Installed the Cyanogenmod 7.2 ROM and Tiamat v1.1.5 kernel. Then I started having issues with my battery, and Cyanogenmod seemed to be increasing the issues. At that time HTC announced they'd be releasing ICS, yada yada yada. I found a stock ROM online, and installed it, and updated as they were released OTA. Having finally gotten a new extended battery, I'd like to re-root & ROM my phone, but I've hit some road blocks.
I currently have the Android Version of 2.3.4 & Software Number of 5.10.605.9
I tried to re-do the entire process that had previously worked for me, but once I used the command hack-vivow.cmd, the phone would boot to the Revolutionary (of HBOOT ?) screen. Command line shows this, and just hangs:
c:\vwhk-12102011-c>fastboot oem rebootRUU
< waiting for device >
Click to collapse
Phone shows this:
-Revolutionary-
VIVO_W XB SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT -6.13.1002
RADIO -1.09.01.1111
eMMC -boot
Click to collapse
Phone gives me the options of "BOOTLOADER", "REBOOT", "REBOOT BOOTLOADER", & "POWER DOWN". "REBOOT BOOTLOADER" changes "FASTBOOT" briefly to "FASTBOOT USB", but changes back in about 15-20 seconds. When I select "BOOTLOADER", the screen freezes for a few seconds, and it won't let me select any options, "FASTBOOT" changes to "HBOOT", and I get this in green text:
SD Checking
Loading...[PG32DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PG32DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PG32IMG.zip]
Click to collapse
The next screen of green text says "Parsing...[SD ZIP]" followed by 9 things, and I'm only given an option to Update or No/Reboot. No/Reboot reboots my phone into an endless bootloop, until I remove the battery and power back on with Volume Down + Power Button. Update does a reset of my phone, and puts me right back to where I am now. While it is updating there is an error message at the bottom that says "Can not roll back hboot version".
I've tried multiple things to attempt to fix this... I ran the TacoRoot method from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751796
When the 8th line was completed
adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.sh --setup
Click to collapse
, the phone rebooted, it got stuck in a bootloop.
So that's where I am now. I'm stuck with S-Off, the PG32DIAG/PG32IMG errors, an HBOOT that seems to be far too new of a version, and I haven't found a way to get back to 2.3.3. As you can see I'm a noob. I'm really not sure where I went wrong (other than going back to a stock ROM and allowing it to update). Unfortunately a lot of things are just way over my head, without seeing a step by step process. But I'm just stuck at the moment. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, or any ideas of things to try I GREATLY appreciate it.
Still looking for an answer, but I've done some more digging.
Would I be correct is assuming that I have to find a way to downgrade hboot (which Revolutionary won't allow) and get S-On, in order to do what I need to do? If so, does anyone know of an accurate way to accomplish this? All I've found are old threads that apparently are no longer relevant for newer Software & hboot updates.

I am by no means an expert, but my limited understanding would suggest this: try flashing a new recovery like clockworkmod with fastboot. If that is successful you can flash a superuser zip in clockwork. I don't recall the steps to flash the recovery, but I think since you are s-off you should be able to do it fairly easily.

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm trying to understand exactly what you mean. From my very limited knowledge, there might be 2 ways of doing what you're saying.
First, rebooting the phone with Volume Down + Power button, with the the ClockworkMod file placed on the root of my SD card, and renamed PG32IMG.zip. Then selecting Bootloader, and allowing it to Update.
Second would be rebooting the phone (Volume Down + Power), and then "force" the flashboot via command, with the phone connected to the USB cable.
The 1st option I would love to try, if that has a chance of working. The 2nd option though, won't work, because the phone won't respond to any commands via command lines.
The reason I'm not immediately jumping on option #1 for a try, is that I might be on track to get things straightened out, with a possibility of critical failure. I found this thread:
rootzwiki.c om/topic/1579-how-to-restore-to-stock-from-alpharevx-incredible-2-vivow-only/
I'm currently using Revolutionary, but apparently Alpharevx is a previous incarnation of that, and some users in that thread claim that it worked for their Revolutionary S-Off phones. So far, I have gotten to the point where I now have Android Froyo/ Android version 2.2.1 (from the same way of doing things as Option #1 above). The rest of that thread is messing with the Bootloader, which I'd rather not risk if I don't have to (I do realize how serious the consequences are). If there's any other way to do it, I'll gladly give it a try, as long as it doesn't put me in a place much worse than I'm at now (bricking my phone by messing with the bootloader certainly would be.)
I apologize for being a pain in the ass, I just want to make sure I understand any recommendations fully before I do something wrong. Clearly I should have done a lot more research before "un-rooting" my phone. Had my original issues not been my battery, I'd still be out of warranty for having S-Off. Thank you very much for the response, it is truly appreciated.

So with Froyo on there can you get to the stock recovery?
Oh wow, yes I can. I just tried the fastboot clockworkmod flash, but it doesn't seem to be working, or even more likely, I don't know what I'm doing.
I booted the phone with Volume Down + Power, selected "Fastboot", which changed HBOOT to FASTBOOT USB. I used the command prompt and typed "fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-vivow.img". The command prompt stalls at "< waiting for device >" and FASTBOOT USB changed to FASTBOOT. Maybe I just don't know what to do after than. I tried "Recovery", which I thought would have booted ClockworkMod, had it been installed properly.

I also just noticed...did you do "fastboot devices" first to make sure it actually recognized your phone? I'm really guessing, but I figured it was worth asking.
Yes it does recognize my phone. I think you're exactly right, in the direction you're showing me. I think flashing CWM is the key to getting this all to work.
But I'm getting some strange stuff happening. When I was finally able to select the Fastboot section, I had CWM saved as PG32IMG.zip. I started getting an error (black screen with a little center image of my phone, with a red "!" on it), after rebooting. I had to press Volume Up + Power, which brought me to some kind of Android settings (Wipe Cache, & something about clearing or wiping partition). I selected to just reboot, and the phone rebooted fine. I changed the PG32IMG.zip file back to the Froyo, and I can no longer get past the "Recovery" and forcing to do the Update or Bootloop from declining.
So now I don't know what to do, when it comes to the PG32IMG.zip file. I even just changed the Froyo PG32IMG.zip to a 2.3.3 Gingerbread PG32IMG.zip, so now I'm at the correct ROM for rooting. I changed it because I wasn't sure if being at Froyo was preventing me from doing all of this from the beginning, similar to how the most up to date update did as well.
But back to the PG32IMG.zip, what would be the best thing to do with this situation? Should I change it back to the CWM, and deal with the Android error, while still allowing me to get into FASTBOOT. Or should I just keep it as the GB 2.3.3, as it is now? Can I just delete the PG32IMG.zip file altogether, or is it absolutely necessary? It just keeps trying to update to what the file already is, and prevents me from doing anything else.
I think I'm going to try the CWM.zip renamed to PG32IMG.zip and see if I can get it to work.

You shouldn't be flashing romantic zips as PG32IMG. That's what clockwork is for. If get it back to froyo, then go to the HTC recovery and follow the clockwork instructions I linked to. But maybe someone more knowledgeable than I can answer better.
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda app-developers app
After you go onto bootloader and it flashes your IMG you either rename the file on your SD card or delete it from your SD card. You will be able to proceed after that has been done

You're right. The PG32IMG.zip was a problem. I removed them from the SD card's root, and it's working as it should.
Now the issue is the instructions in that link. I can't find any update.zip for the phone anywhere. I also can't find any options in the Recovery for "re-install package". I go to "BOOTLOADER" and then "RECOVERY". The Phone then boots to a small image of my phone with a red "!". I press Volume Up + Power button, and it loads the "Android system recovery <3e>". I have a Yellow error at the bottom stating"

The version I have has the correct files in the "platform-tools" folder.
I get an error with the "adb remount" command, saying "remount failed: Operation not permitted"
When I use the command "fastboot devices", my phone doesn't show up, and it just skips to the next command line, showing nothing. My phone does say "FASTBOOT" though.
Then when I type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.5-vivow.img" it just hangs at "< waiting for device >"
Maybe I didn't set it up the sdk stuff properly? I'll look more stuff up when I get home later tonight. But I figured, I'd at least post this up now, in case this is showing another issue.

Maybe I didn't set it up the sdk stuff properly? I'll look more stuff up when I get home later tonight. But I figured, I'd at least post this up now, in case this is showing another issue.

I don't think it's going to work until you get fastboot devices and adb devices to recognize your phone. I wish I could point you in the right direction, but I'm not very experienced with it.
I'm assuming you have the drivers for our phone installed? Some people have to reboot the pc to get those to recognize the device...
Yeah, I'm going to have to do some more digging. ADB device does recognize my phone, at the 6th line on the screen cap I posted. I've restarted the pc multiple times since first trying to get all of this to work.

First of all make sure you have fastboot.exe in your tools folder
Code:
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devices
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery recovery***.img
Make sure you have the drivers and that you delete HTC sync from your computer. If you can get it to boot up into the phone make sure you have android debugging turned on.

Yup, it's there.
Did those commands, and it ended in the same result. No errors or "waiting" messages at the flashboot devices command, but it didn't show my device either.

Definitely installed driver. I originally tried to install the driver I previously used with my original s-off/root/rom, but it didn't work with Windows 8 (previous PC was WinXP), so I found the correct one for my OS. The "adb devices" command never found my phone, before installing the current driver.
I never installed HTC Sync. Just double checked the "Uninstall or change program" in the Win8 control panel (previously "Add/Remove Programs") to make sure it didn't get installed with out my knowledge, and it's not in there.
If you mean on the phone: "Settings" > "Applications" > "Development" > check box for "USB debugging", then yes. If it's a command of some sort, then no & I don't know how to do it.
I'm also making sure to run these commands by right-clicking the Command Prompt and selecting "Run as administrator", before doing these commands.

[Q] Need help getting a zip onto device while in TWRP

Hello all this is my first post and first time trying to root/unlock a device and am having a fun but slightly frustrating time doing so. I was following a guide and got to this step.
2. Now copy/move the downloaded SuperSU file to your Sdcard.
How do I do this when my device is in fastboot mode?
I am in the TWRP but don't understand the steps to getting the SuperSU zip file onto my device in this state.
Edit: My device is no longer recognized as an ADB device in device manager when I am in TWRP. I cannot use ADB sideloader to transfer a file. Now when I use the commad "adb devices" nothing is found but earlier it showed my device before I put TWRP on.
When it is in bootloader it says "Android Bootloader Interface" in device manager.
Once I enter TWRP that disappears and under "Other devices" it is showing up as "flo" which is what is says the product name is when in fastboot. Really confused as this is my first device I have unlocked/rooted on my own. I figured it would be way easier than this but I am noob so I guess I should have expected this.
Can't you just put the SuperSU update.zip on the /sdcard (virtual) while in android, prior to starting twrp?

I am stuck in either bootloader or the TWRP... If I try to start my device it just hangs on the little nexus "X" forever like it was the first time starting my device and never loads past it. Is there a way I can just reset all this to factory and start over? Ty for responding.

Just boot into twrp and choose wipe, then swipe (don't choose any other options)

I get "Factory Reset Complete" with "Failed" under it. in the console it says
Formatting cache using make_ext4fs...
Done.
Updating partition details...
Hmm, does it boot now? or is it same as before?

Same as before unfortunately =/
I have let it sit for 10 mins + and still hangs on the "X"
You need to install this to use ADB while in recovery.

Linux / ADB / Stock Recovery / Sideload

Looking for some help because I am at a loss here.
I'm using Ubuntu 17.10 with all latest updates. I have the latest Sdk installed and added to PATH, adb shows version 1.0.39 when adb version executed. I have the latest udev rules from github cloned and symlinked. With the phone on and debugging enabled, I can see the device and trigger it to reboot into recovery.
BUT, once in recovery, adb no longer sees the device (I've unplugged from USB and replugged it back in). It seems most of the stuff I can find searching around applies to windows and the drivers in windows. But I don't seem to find any info regarding this issue on linux. If anyone has any thoughts, please share.
edit: I don't believe this should have any impact on the stock recovery and adb sideloading, but the bootloader is unlocked, but the stock boot.img has been restored so the phone is currently unrooted.
Thanks
-Mike
edit: sorry saw stock recovery in title, not article.
anywhay, assuming your trying to sideload an OTA update, when you select to sideload from ADB, do you get the prompt on the phone itself to perform the sideload?
Yeah this is with stock recovery. When I run 'adb devices', I just get the output 'List of devices attached', but nothing listed beneath.
If I try to perform a sideload anyway, I get 'connecting...',
then 'falling back to older sideload method....'
then 'error: no devices/emulators found'.

I think you are missing a step, are you at the 'no command' screen after rebooting to recovery ?
if so, you need to hold the power button and tap volume up to fully enter into recovery, then from there, select 'apply update from ADB'
you will then be prompted on the phone to 'adb sideload <filename>...'

heheh, naw, it happens way more than you would think.
hope you get it sorted now.
Yeah I'm all good now. That was EXACTLY it. It's sideloading the OTA right now. Thanks again.

Magisk Method for my phone, XT1952-T, doesn't seem to be working

From what I understand, the REVVLRY is just the Moto G7 Play rebranded. From that, I assumed that the method of using Magisk to root Moto devices would also work for the device (Unlocking bootloader, patching a file with Magisk using the stock firmware [learned that the hard way, ty sd_shadow], flashing that file with ADB, rebooting).
However, when finishing this and rebooting the phone, instead of "bad key" or "N/A" showing up, a serial code-like text is in its place. I hadn't taken the time to figure out what it actually is or means, but all I know is that it gets stuck on that screen, forcing me to use LMSA again which successfully returns the phone back to normal.
I am not a professional in development or code, but one thing I can point out is that the final number of the build number is different from my current one (file QPYS30.85-18-9-8 vs device QPYS30.85-18-9-10). Maybe this could be the issue? Although I have seen threads that managed to root even with a different version. Is there any potential reason that this happens? And what guide should I follow to root the REVVLRY if it is possible?
A question I probably should have asked from the start; about how long should I wait for the phone to reboot after Magisk is flashed? I may have just been impatient with the phone and not given it enough time to finish whatever it needed to.
Try this method instead:
Reflash stock and boot normally > (unlock bootloader if you haven't already) > reboot into bootloader > fastboot boot twrp > adb sideload magisk zip > reboot into system > install magisk apk
adb: sideload connection failed: closed
adb: trying pre-KitKat sideload method...
adb: pre-KitKat sideload connection failed: closed
This is what I get when doing sideload with the magisk.zip. Is this normal, or is this already a sign of doing something wrong?

Looks like the ADB connection isn't getting established. In TWRP, make sure to go into the Options (I think) mention and select the "ADB Sideload" option.
It seems to have worked, neither TWRP nor the Command returned any bad results. From here, do I continue as normal from the Magisk method?

Yeah, after you flash the Magisk.zip, reboot back into the OS, rename Magisk.zip into Magisk.apk, and then install it like a normal app. Open it up and it'll detect root.
Flashing the zip went well, so I opened the app after renaming it and the "Installed" says N/A. Do I continue from there? I am sorry about all the questions by the way, it's my first go at rooting, and I haven't proven successful so far lol
Just to rule out the possibility of using Magisk to then patch the file like normal, sure enough, I get the same text. This time I managed to get a picture of it, though, not very clear.
The second picture is what happens after I wait for a bit. I'm going to put the phone back to the state after the zip flash with TWRP though.
Edit: Redoing all the step and not continuing forward, the string of text also seems to happen anyways, but I do manage to get past it and start the phone like normal. Magisk still says N/A however.
