[Q] Phone not charging, even with AC adapter?

(I tried searching for similar threads, but "charging" and "desire" gives me billions of results)
I have quite a sticky situation on my hands. Last night when I were to check my phone for messages, it was turned off. I grabbed my charger with the AC adapter and plugged it in. Voilà, amber led is turned on. I waited a while as I went off to grab food and that sorts, returned and turned it on. No problem so far. Small digression: I even got those messages I expected, hooorah!
Anyways, after a couple of hours I returned to my phone to check additional messages but then again, it was turned off. Even though it was hooked up to the AC adapter. I mean, the amber led is turned on and even the battery animation in the status bar when charged is doing its thing.
So I started trying to figure out what it is, but nothing have helped the slightest bit so far. I tried flashing different radios and roms but the problem seem to stick.
What's odd is that it allows charging sometimes, but it takes a long while. I have yet to find out the reason for it, but my doubts are that currently the phone needs to be off.
So far I think it could be a faulty USB cable that may cause the problem, but even though how obnoxiously stupid it may be, I turn my ears to you guys.

first things first,
search xda-developers re: USB brick. does it fit the symptoms?
do you have access to a different usb cable? does it charge better from this one?
will it charge quicker on on (for instance) your computer, compared to the wall charger?
is the charger an official charger or a third party one? if its a third party, no name brand one, chances are its crap. I bought a 1000mA rated car charger and one of the components won't let more than 100mA through.

Let's see. As far as I can tell, USB brick symptoms sounds like you're unable to connect your phone using USB when booted into Android and/or custom boot/recovery. I have yet to try this, but I also read that they were able to charge the phone without problems. However, I'll give this a try seeing as it won't hurt.
I'm afraid I do not have access to another USB as these "micro" USB cables aren't that widespread. Or, at least I don't have leftovers as I do for regular USB cables.
It's hard to tell if it charges faster for whether possibilities as it doesn't charge at all if it's on. The amber led is lit, but the battery percentage still drops. I've only relied on the wall charger as I know it supports more amper than its PC counterpart. But yet again, I should try the USB brick fix. Hopefully it'll work.
Both the charger and the cable is stock, so I don't think it could be shabby third party components.
I'm also suspicious to if it can be the battery that's blasted. I've measured the voltage and it seems to be fine, so I don't know for sure. Maybe it's bad because it takes ages for it to charge? I don't have an external power supply, so I can't test this for sure though.
Anyhow, thanks nzdcoy for giving me some directions to what it could be.
Edit: Tried hooking up the phone to the computer, and I had access to the SD card. I suppose that's not a USB brick then?

Does it positively charge when plugged into the PC? Unless you are using GPS or you are using a USB1.1 port, your PC should still charge it positively.

I've somehow found a method to charge the darned phone. And I could almost conclude it's a bad connection between the wire and the phone. I think the socket on the phone is damaged. Worst part is, is that it comes and goes. One day it could work swimmingly and charge in whatever position, the other day it requires one certain position to charge anything at all.
My Desire works in strange ways.

[Q] USB/Battery Charging Bug

Alright XDA, checking if anyone else has got this issue?
Bought the galaxy nexus almost three weeks ago, everything was fine with the phone until last week thursday. My battery was running low so I decide to charge it, only to find that it wasn't charging. I took out the battery and put it back in, still wouldn't charge (or at least it didn't say it was charging). I left it in the charging plug whilst the phone was turned off, hit the power button and the black charging screen comes up. I turn it back on to see that the battery is at 44%, after being at 12% 5 minutes ago.
Anyway, ever since then the phone hasn't been charging right. I plug it into the charger, and it doesn't recognize that its charging, or maybe it actually isn't? It takes a while for it to recognize that it's plugged in, and takes a while to actually start charging. I unplug the phone after it's finished charging and is at 99%, only for the battery icon to display that it is still charging.... it's constantly changing from charging to not charging even though I'm not doing anything.
I got the battery indicator app and that would display that the battery has been discharging since say 1 o clock in the afternoon, yet I took it off the charger at 9 o clock in the morning,
Furthermore, I'm now trying to charge it through my computer and put some music on my phone, but my computer won't even recognize that anything is plugged in even though it is quite clearly charging through the computer. (have had to plug it in and out several times, and sometimes it'll recognize that its there...)
is the USB plug ****ed? should I just send it back? I would go to my provider to get a new one from them as I still have warranty and thing, but they will only accept returns within the first 7 days of purchase. Otherwise that leaves me with sending it to samsung which is my last resort because they'll probably take their sweet time getting the phone back to me and I'm going to leave the UK for 4 weeks next week and I really want to take my nexus with me instead of risking it not coming back before I leave.

Have you tried a different USB cable?

Yes, I've tried the original charger, a blackberry charger, USB cable from original charger through computer, and another micro-usb cable. All have the same problem with recognizing that its plugged in/charging... And now funnily enough it's unplugged from my computer but it's still saying it's connected as a media device.

Don't power up or turn off samsung devices with the USB connected. It messes up the battery stats. I've had the same thing happen to me before on the Nexus S. Since then I learned not to do that on my phones.
I don't know anything about your other charging issues though.
edit: you could always try a factory reset (which will wipe the whole device) to make sure it is not software related.

Interesting about the Nexus S, trying to track back if I unplugged or powered up the phone with USB in...

Hi, I have the same problem since the 7th of December, first i thought an app or some sync was eating up the battery (i updated G+ and facebook the previous day) but then I noticed that it was not charging, now my GN is dead. I manage to turn in on when is on the charger a couple of times but now not even that. (I have used several chargers and usb cables with no luck)

Did you manage to solve the issue? I sent mine today to Samsung after trying to get a replacement from Phones 4 u.

Possibly chip in battery is bad? Havent confirmed but supposedly we have fuel gauge chips.

Iv had this problem twice now.....
it wouldnt charge past 12%, it would not show the charging symbol.... i shut off the phone (it seems to charge while the phone is off).. after 5 minutes, i turned it on and the phone was at 65%?
I tried to tell the guy at the verizon store and he would not do anything about it unless he could see the problem happen.... this doesnt always happen and its annoying as hell...
im thinking it is a software issue since it charges fine while the phone is off...

I was looking for a cause/solution as to why my battery life reporting seems so erratic, I will definitely take this advice and see if this might be why. So it should be ok if I only connect and pull the charger with the phone already on? What if I plug the charger in with the phone completely off and then pull it before booting, is that alright too?
It's funny all the new rituals you need to learn to get around the quirks of a new device (like having to turn the screen off and then back on again after docking my Nexus One if I wanted the touchscreen to work right haha).

I've been having strange issues with my Galaxy Nexus and charging for the past few weeks - I can't seem to get it to charge over 50-60%. Also, whilst it's 'charging', the 'Battery' details page reports 'Discharging' or 'Not charging', even though there is a charging icon in the status bar?
I left it to charge for around 9-10 hours last night, off the mains charger, and it only got to ~45%...
...as I mentioned, whilst it is charging, it never reports that it's charging. The lock screen also suggests to 'Connect your charger'...
...charging whilst the handset is off still results in a half charge. I've tried many different chargers/cables with no luck.
Strangely, I used to be able to only charge the handset off of USB, to 100%, but I've now lost that 'work around' :-(.
I guess I'll phone Samsung returns and see what they say. I'll post their response, in-case anyone else hits this issue.

hmmmm, sounds broken

Mine is charging OK.
My biggest problem is that even when I have my charger unplugged, the icon is still showing that it's charging.
Look at the screenshots, the battery level is going down the whole time because I'm not charging it but it's showing a bar for charging at the bottom.
And if you look at the time on the clock, a few minutes go by and it still says 38 seconds on battery.

Did you ever find a solution for this problem? I'm experiencing the same problem and am unsure whether to try and return the phone or send it in to samsung.

Have to back my phone up in the next few days and send it back for repair/replacement.
It takes ten days, but if you haven't sent it back by then, I'll let you know what they say the problem was.

That's what I do most often, it works fine for me (but I've had no battery problems so far).

[Q] P930 wont charge even after replacement port

I have an LG Nitro and for some reason it stopped charging. The notification icon shows it as charging but the battery continues to go down. I tried buying another battery as I thought maybe the battery was going out but this was not the issue. So next, I ordered a charging port and attached (soldered) it to the device, this also did not resolve the issue. I am kind of at a loss at what to do as the phone is in perfect condition but will not take a charge. The Nitro is rooted with TWRP recovery and CM 10.1 installed on the device.
I now have a Nexus 4 but was planning on giving the Nitro to my cousin but then this started happening right before my Nexus arrived.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? All of the symptoms point to either a bad battery or charging port but this is obviously not the case.

A few thoughts...
1. Are you using the official LG AC Adapter? If not, are you using an AC Adapter that's outputting AT LEAST 500mA? For me, in the car using GPS, even with a car adapter that outputs 1.0A, it can't keep up with charging the battery. It shows that it's charging, but the capacity continues to go down...
2. Are you using any kind of CPU under/over clocker? Like SetCPU? Check the settings and make sure you're not using some crazy profile, or better yet just uninstall it and test to see if things get better.
3. How about the USB Cable? Have you tried other cables to make sure you're not using a bad cable?
4. Double-check your solder work. Are you're connections clean, no globs or solder points covering more than a single pin? Connections are solid, nothing loose or gaps?

I do not think I have the charger that came with the p930 as it got stolen but I do have the charger from my Nexus 4. Do you think it will work? The N4 charger has 1200 milliamp output or should I order an OEM charger.

I think I used the charger from my HP Touchpad which is 2000mA but it didnt work. I may be mistaken.....
I will look into getting an OEM charger.

Ok I made some progress finally!! I have a 700mA charger plugged in and now the LG logo comes on and then blinks off. :good:
Hopefully the battery is charging and by morning it will be working.

I can get into download mode and would be able to get in to the twrp but I do not have a backup and my sdcard got corrupted.
What are my options now?

The 1.2A from the Nexus4 is great. That should do nicely.
1. Are you ABSOLUTELY sure this adapter from the Nexus4 is working properly (have you verified that it's working fine with your Nexus4)? If so, then plug it into the Nitro.
2. If the Nitro is powered off, then when you first connect a power source, you should see the 'LG' logo come on for a second then go back off. After a minute you can short-press the power button and you 'should' see an animated battery icon that looks like it's filling up. The battery charging icon looks like this (lower quality image on the phone):

3. Let the phone charge for an hour. Now, press and hold the power button until you see the 'LG' logo, let go of the power button. The phone 'should' start powering on.
When you say 'Still blinking on and off', what is? If it's the soft-touch buttons on the bottom, that's an indicator that the battery is low...So, indeed the issue continues.

I mean the phone turns on, I see the LG logo and then it turns off. Then it turns back on and I see the LG logo and it turns off again. Make sense ?
I can get into Download mode just fine and would be able to get into TWRP but my sdcard crapped out.

I know about charging the device with the phone off (seeing the charging dialog) but the phone keeps turning off and back on blinking the LG logo.

If I still had TWRP on my sdcard, I could of went to the Factory Reset screen and went into TWRP and let it charge from there and then wipe it and install cm 10.1 again.
Is there anyway to load the recovery.img to the sdcard without being able to boot the phone? I am pretty sure I cannot use adb in Download mode so I am kind of stuck and I do not want to flash to stock if I can help it but I will if I have to.

I think its a hardware problem and your phone need to be repaired

I tend to agree with nss007, the constant fluctuation of the power/charging going on and off is a big red flag to hardware issues.

Well I actually took it to a cellphone repair company (only one in the area) and they had it for about a week and could not get it to charge. They also changed out the charging port and looked the board over. Of course, they were obviously not using the right charger as they could not even get the LG logo to come up. I am hoping that it is a software issue as the company could not find a single thing wrong with the phone or board. Of course, they mainly fix hardware (broken screens, charging ports, etc.) so I dunno how much experience they have with software.

A few months back, my Nitro fell off my table while the charger was attached. Ever since then, it is doing what you say; showing a charging icon but it actually isn't charging.
Just a few suggestions that I've learned over time dealing with this problem... When you are plugging it in, be sure it is setting where you intend for it to sit. Basically, don't plug it in THEN set it down. I've noticed that ANY movement whatsoever will knock the phone off charge but still show the charging animation/icon. This problem is completely independent of the state of the phone; i.e. what ROM I'm booted in to, whether or not I'm in recovery, and even with the device powered off.
How to tell if you are actually charging; open your settings and go to the battery settings. Where it normally says "Discharging" will change to "Charging (USB)" or "Charging (AC)" if you are actually charging. Even with the charger attached, any movement of the phone will almost instantly throw it into "Discharging" while still showing the animation/icon.
Hope any of this helps.

Fast Charging No Longer Working

I wanted to share this in case anyone ever experiences the same problem. I had my Note 4 since it was released in October and didn't have any issues until roughly a week ago. All of a sudden, the phone would not fast charge. Whenever connected to the fast charging adapter, it would detect it and charge, but it would not give the fast charge notification and would charge extremely slowly (8 hours to get a full charge from near empty). In addition, my PCs would no longer be able to access it and the phone would not give the MTP option menu when connected. I tried multiple cables, outlets, fast chargers, and batteries in addition to toggling the fast charge setting, wiping the cache, and performing a factory reset - but nothing helped. I finally called verizon and they sent me a new note 4 and everything was working again.....
Three days passed and the same exact issue occurred again on the replacement phone. This makes me believe that the Samsung charger I have has somehow deteriorated and is now breaking the usb connectivity on the phone. I contacted samsung and am getting a replacement for the charger and will have to get ANOTHER replacement phone from verizon (after they finish processing my first replacement).
So if anyone has a similar issue, I would suggest getting a new charger in addition to the phone replacement so you don't have to go through the entire process again. I could be wrong that the charger caused this, but I can't think of anything else besides the recent lollipop upgrade - but everything was working for several days on lollipop for both phones.
If anyone has ideas on how to fix this, please let me know. I can't return the second phone until the first one is processed so no fast charging or PC connection until then. Thanks

Same Issues and I have three fast chargers so it is not the charger it is the phone or the 5.0 update.
Mine was not really even charging unless I turned the phone off. I called Verizon and they are sending me a replacement phone overnight. It would not connect to the computer either. I hope this is not a result of fast charging, if so they are gonna get a lot of phone calls

I also have another fast charger which wasn't working... I was thinking that my main charger was breaking the phones USB connectivity and fast charging, but if others are having the same problem then I am wondering if it is something related to the lollipop update. I am replacing the main charger and should have another replacement note 4 come Friday. If it happens again, then I think it points to the lollipop update since both phones had this issues days after lollipop was installed.

Had the same issue. Used a different wire. Solved the problem. Any Micro USB that can transfer data, can use fast charge. If it's a "power only" cable, or if the data pins/wires are messed up, no fast charge.

Well the problem was that all the cables were working and then stopped. When I got the replacement phone they worked and then a few days later the same thing happened again. So something was causing the connection to break completely. I am hoping that the cause was the charger which I am replacing.

Word of advice: if it stops charging normally In ANY way. THROW AWAY THE CHARGER. I made the same mistake and my Note 4 literally lit on fire melting the lower 1/2 inch of my phone and completely melting the charger. It was so hot by the time I was able to yank the cord out both the phone and charger were melted and destroyed and I ended up with three fingers with minor burns. I am lucky it did not happen when I was sleeping with my infant nearby. I now charge my phone only in the day and on a granite counter in case of fire again.
It stopped fast charging. Then I used the charger again and got a message saying "Transferring power to high powered device" then wham 2" flames
Verizon kept claiming it couldnt happen and thought I used a aftermarket charger until I brought the phone and charger to a corporate store and they prompytly replaced both the phone and charger under factory warranty.

I have three samsung original fast chargers and none of them worked plus the fact that the phone could not be connected to any computer I have makes me think it was the phone. I got the new phone today so I guess time will tell. I just can't see three chargers and cables going bad all at the same time. I also did not take the 5.0 update on the new phone.

my replacement phone stopped fast charging and computer will not recognize it now. I used a different cable that was plugged into the fast charge module from Samsung. I guess that is what caused it. They are sending another phone but for C sake if a cable is the reason this happens surely there should be a fix without replacing the phone time after time.

I finally received the new phone from Verizon and I replaced all the cables I was using to make sure this doesn't happen again. Hopefully the charger was the culprit and the problem is over and done with. Hope no one else encounters this as it really was a pain to deal with.

I got my third phone Monday and so far so good. I had a car charger from Verizon plugged into an extender that had 4 plugs in it. When I unplugged my GPS from it I noticed it was very hot. The Verizon Charger was also hot even though nothing was plugged into it. This may have been what caused my issue. It could have overheated. I replaced it with a different brand and tested to make sure it stayed cool when anything was plugged in and have used it all week without issues. The only other thing could have been the USB cable I used the evening before the second phone stopped fast charging so I do not use it either. So if you use a car charger extender check to see if it gets hot when anything is plugged in. BUT, it is scary knowing something like this can kill the USB on this phone.

I have an external Hard-drive that would constantly disconnect and reconnect with the slightest movement of the cord connected to the computer. It even caused my H/D to get corrupted twice requiring re-formatting. But all I had to do to fix it was to squeeze the big connector on the cord a little and tighten it up. Just a thought.

It's been a week since I received my third phone and everything is working perfectly. I can only assume the charger was breaking it and I'm glad the issue is behind me.
So for anyone experiencing this, I suggest contacting Samsung to replace the charger before going to your cell provider to replace the phone

I'm having the same exact problem. My 2nd replacement phone is now doing the same thing as the first one. I have too many scenarios now though and I'm confused as to which it is. I have two Adaptive chargers.. Batteries, phone, or chargers...

As soon as I replaced the charger, I didn't have this issue again. I suggest sending your chargers back to Samsung (or whatever other brand you have) because one of them is breaking the phones

I would place my bet on a bad cable. With the higher voltages that fast charge uses going through the danger of arching and sparking is increased especially if there's a poor connection would fry or weld melt metal inside the connector. This could damage the USB port in the phone and cause the phone's USB port to have a bad connection. This bad USB port in the phone could fry the other cables as well leaving you wondering why everything went bad all at once

My phone will fast charge on my two vehicle chargers (at 1.5 amps and 2.1 amps), but refuses to change any faster than 500 mA on two separate fast charger bricks. The same bricks work fine for fast charging other phones, so it's my phone, not the charging hardware. I'm using the same cable(s) for all instances, which leads me to believe that something is wrong with how the phone interprets the "smart charging" signal on the bricks, or that the phone is sending the wrong charging signal.
I can still connect to a computer just fine, so my issue may be different.
Does anyone else have the issue with bricks but not with chargers without "smart charging" capabilities?
I've had this problem on stock 5.1.1, Jasmine rom 6.0.1, and now CM13. I full wiped everything when reinstalling, so either it's hardware, or an issue propigated through many roms. I've tried a few different kernels too, just to see if that was the problem.
I'm changing the battery tomorrow to check that possibility. Maybe I'll bend the contact a slight bit and see what happens (phone catches on fire)...

I have the same problem as you ,so what I have to do to solve this issue without replace the phone,
I have rooted 5.1.1 stock rom, If i flash full stock rom 5.1.1 does this help or what?

Turns out one out of the three new cables I bought didn't work, and my OEM cable didn't work for fast charging. Swapping for a good cable fixed the issue.

Fast charging frying phone.

I plugged in my Zuk Z2(plus) into a charger yesterday happened to be a fast charger QC and within about 10 minutes it went up in smoke charger seems fine (cable melted) but the phone now only shows the ZUK logo and switches off,
Doesn't seem to charge either just vibrates, from the looks the charging ports a bit melted, Was lucky it didn't properly catch fire,
Anyhow to the question, I can get to (stock) recovery and I imagine I'll need a new charging port, but anyone know if the motherboard is likely fried too or would I get away with a new charging port on it ? (and obviously never charge with a QC again) .

I had the same thing happen to me. I was charging my ZUK in another room using a Quick Charge 3.0 charger. I went to check on it. There was smoke coming from the charging port (which was scorching hot) and a horrible electrical smell. Phone wouldn't turn on. From what I remember it was just a white LED when pressing the power button, maybe the vibration too. I tried to charge but it wouldn't do anything. Couldn't boot to EDL mode. I thought it was dead.
A few days later, I remember plugging the phone into my laptop (in another attempt to diagnose the problem) and at some point I got distracted and left it plugged in. After about 30 minutes I was suprised to see that it randomly powered on by itself and came back to life. I believe I still had trouble getting it to charge, and that the battery percentage was stuck on 0% when when plugged into the mains. But eventually it all just fixed itself and I have been using the phone for another 2 years without issue. Guess I got lucky.
Sadly it sounds like your phone is a little more damaged that what mine was. I did not have any visible damage, it was just a bad electrical smell that remained for a few weeks or months. I have heard from other people who had this problem and I believe there is a little component on the motherboard that overheats and burns out when trying to use a Quick Charge mains charger. But the phone works fine without it. I know the charging port is fastened to the motherboard so it would probably require soldering.

Don't I remember people hacking "the fast charging chip" off the board to fix this problem? Literally prying the chip off and it sorting this issue out and allegedly the phone working well. Try a search for something like that.
I know this was a common fault with fast chargers killing the phone.
