[HELP] Can't Figure Out Why I'm Not Rooted?

Here's some info:
GSM Galaxy Nexus - Retail (bought from amazon).
Version: 4.0.1 (says no further update available).
Build Number: ITL41F
Can't remember if I rooted, then updated to ITL41F or not.
Followed THESE instructions successfully:
Code:
- Got drivers for Galaxy Nexus installed.
- Used "fastboot-windows oem unlock" and unlocked bootloader.
- Used "install-superboot-windows.bat"
Does this mean I am rooted permanently or have I missed out something?
I do not have Clockwork MOD installed. I don't plan on putting a custom ROM on the phone, I just want root access on the stock ROM.
Superuser is installed.
RootExplorer is denied superuser permissions (never had a prompt or anything). I can navigate to system/app/ and see superuser is in there. RootExplorer does see all the folders and files, but cannot be mounted in R/W mode.
Superuser Update fixer app says (under "force):
Code:
Checking signatures... ok!
extracting tiny busybox... ok!
extracting superuser.apk... ok!
Gaining root access ... fail!
In laymans terms, what do I need to do now to gain root access to my phone?
Also, to clarify, if I run a OTA update to the stock ROM, will it un-root my phone?

Easiest thing is to unlock your bootloader, flash CWM, and then apply a su.zip.
I rarely ever actually root a phone. Usually I will install CWM and then flash a stock root rom.
Look in this thread for the Clockworkmod boot method...should work like a charm.

Should have just used this after you unlocked boot loader for route

Thanks. However:
1) I'm hoping my bootloader will still be unlocked. Therefore will flashing CWM reset the phone, IE delete all the apps?
2) What happens if I don't really want to install CWM? Can I not be rooted without it?
3) It doesn't really explain why I don't seem to be rooted :/
I should also add that Root Explorer does see all the files and folders, but it cannot be mounted in r/w mode.

you should move your question to the galaxy nexus q&a forum, you will get more help there, if not find someone who already had the same issue. Read ALL stickies at the top of the forums. This will help solve your problem. Posting here will most likely get you bad attitudes fyi

1. Unlocking the bootloader wipes the device not CWM. Mine came unlocked from retail store.
2. According to Superboot thread you can root without CWM.
3. Did you install busybox like the instructions say?

I need to be rooted to allow various apps to run to their full potential.
Well, tried the rooting process again, now no matter what method I choose, they are all saying "waiting for device".
Any pointers on what to do next?

you can try below if you like.
first of all, make sure your boot loader is unlocked.
secondly,
download CWM recovery from below.

then download below su binary package i have made

place su_signed_signed.zip into your sdcard (copy into your phone internal storage)
then turn off you phone, boot into bootloader mode (hold vol+ and vol- and power button).
once you are in it,
type
"fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.2-maguro.img".
then using vol+ switch to boot recovery option and press the power button.
once you are in Clockwork Mode Recovery,
choose option "install zip from sdcard"
then browse and select "su_signed_signed.zip"
once it has done, you have rooted your phone.
now all you need to do is, reboot your phone, go to android market,
and install https://market.android.com/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su
then run Superuser,
go to settings,
then select "Su binary v3.XXX, tap to check for updates".
after you tap on that, it should say that SU is out of date.
click on update su binary, then you will be prompted for Superuser request.
once you have permitted it, it will then download the latest su binary and install it.
then you are done.

^^ Except I DO NOT WANT CLOCKWORK MOD on my phone.
However, as closure, I did manage to re-root my phone. I dried different drivers for the Samsung and somehow it just accepted the deivce and rooted it for me.

[Q] SPH-L710 - How to root on KitKat 4.4.2?

Hey, everyone. It's been a long time since I've rooted my phone. I ended up hard bricking it and getting a new one. (I tried using ROM Manager to update my Clockwork Mod and it downloaded and installed, and when it said it needed to restart the device, I accepted, and that was the last time I was able to use the phone).
Anyway, I got it replaced and I haven't rooted it. It's been about 8 months or so and I've decided I want to root my phone again. However, after doing a little research, I saw that rooting is now different when the device is running 4.4.2. I want to be able to run CyanogenMod and flash nightlies and whatnot. Is it safe for me to root my phone and flash CyanogenMod? If so, could someone direct me step by step to doing it? It's been so long and I don't want to brick another phone.

you wont brick it by rooting but here is 3 methods
1. first and mostly recommended flash Philz recovery for the D2Lte in Odin just make sure your on the latest one then root your stock rom with the option under Philz settings called Re-root(SuperSU)
2. you can use any recovery and flash the SuperSU zip from Chain fire
3. you can just use TowelRoot for the actual rooting process then download SuperSU and BusyBox from the PlayStore
method 2 implies that you already have a recovery installed
method 3 will give you root but no recovery

Towelroot is super easy to use, its a one click method.
You can find a full guide for the S3 here
Pretty simple to do though,
Download the TowelRoot apps from http://towelroot.com.
Enable Unknown sources on your phones, normally this option located on Settings > Security.
Install the downloaded app (tr.apk).
Now run the app, just tap the “make it ra1n” button to start rooting.
Let the app perform the root job, wait for about 15 seconds and your phone will restart automatically.
As soon as the phone is turned on, update SuperSU to v1.99r4 or newer.

In my case, TowelRoot didn't work due to Samsung Knox secure boot locks the recovery rom. You can't either go to recovery mode at all or read your phone internal storage/external SD storage from TWRP. I flashed CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.tar.md5 and it would get SuperSU installed to your phone. The SuperSu stopped working when disabling Knox.
Alternatively, I tried to downgrade to the 4.04 or 4.1.2 stock rom by Odin, but failed. So far, I don't have any way to root my phone and install CM11. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

How to remove Root from Galaxy Tab S?

I bought a second hand Samsung Galaxy Tab S a few months ago and it has been working fine.
However, when I looked at version of Android then seems a bit old (5.0.2) and when I did a check for updates it said that it couldn't update because "The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorised way". When I checked then it seems that the device has been rooted.
A quick search suggested I should run SuperSU to remove the root. So, I had to download and install this, but, when I run it says "The SU binary needs to be updated. Continue?" - if I do then I get another message "If you have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM that can be used to (try to) install the SU binary" and gives me a choice of Normal or TWRP/CWM. I am struggling to know how to proceed.
So, should it be possible to remove the root and still preserve all my data, apps, settings, etc?
If so, is SuperSu the way to go or are there other tools I should look at, such as Kingo Android Root?
Or, am I faced with rebuilding with a stock ROM?

If your root manager is supersu then it has the option to unroot in it's settings.

I've tried to fire up SuperSU, but, run into problems, as described in my initial post, and this is what I need to resolve.
Any ideas?

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the end goal. As stated Android v5.0.2 is the latest non-custom firmware available. As a previous owner has unlocked the bootloader and seems to have flashed a SuperSu version that modification is blocking any OTA update to v5.0.2. It is also clear your trying to avoid loosing user data.
Would it be acceptable to be rooted and use a different method to apply the latest Samsung stock firmware for your region? If the answer is yes install a TWRP recovery for your device model but you'll loose your warranty by tripping KNOX (you may already be in that state). Follow the instructions in the TabS TWRP thread.
Then finish the SuperSU install (where your stuck today). Then install Flashfire. With Flashfire and the downloaded latest Samsung firmware package you can flash the boot and system images to update your install then use ODIN to update the Bootloader image from that download firmware. You could also flash the recovery image but that would overwrite TWRP and in your case I don't see the point. Flashfire needs the whole Samsung firmware file to be available on the device itself unlike when using ODIN to flash the Bootloader image.
As I'm rooted but retained my warranty I use FlashFire and ODIN to update to the latest stock firmware and never loose user data. Unfortunately to root and not trip KNOX I did wipe my user data that first time so it does not seem to be an option for you.
Hope that gives you some ideas. In your current state it maybe as simple as completing the SuperSU install (assuming a custom recovery (TWRP/CM) is already installed) then using Flashfire and ODIN as described.

I have Xperia z1 compact running stock non-rooted 14.6.A.1.236 rom. My bootloader is locked. I want to be able to install custom roms. What's the best way to root, unlock bl and install custom recovery? I've been searching forum for past few days but most of the download links redirect to d-h.st. and that breaks the chain of needed files.
Also i never used flashtool and i don't know should i use Sony flashtool or "original" one

I guess I don't have to open a new thread for this: I've been reading a lot about this recently and trying to get my thoughts straight about this:
I found PhilZ Dual Recovery (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2647480) which works with locked bootloader. Some people wrote there they installed the recovery on 5.0.2, so it seems I have to downgrade first (I'm on 5.1.1), even though it doesn't say that in the manual..? - if you can't answer that I'll ask that later then in the linked thread.
Next thing: I rooted with Kingroot, but want to switch to SuperSU - cant switch because theres a problem with the binary, so I have to flash it anyway through custom recovery.
Can I now root with Kingroot, install PhilZ Dualrecovery and when it boots into Recovery Mode, can I just flash the SuperSu.zip?
OR would I need to boot normally first after custom recovery install, then uninstall Kingroot, to unroot, and THEN flash SuperSU in Recovery?

You don't have to downgrade to flash NUT. It's been a while since I did it, but I'm pretty sure that flashing supersu won't totally remove Kingroot. Best thing to do once you're rooted, if you don't want to unlock bl, is probably to install recovery, then in recovery flash a prf, which will wipe your system and install new system with supersu instead of Kingroot.

I don't trust any universal rooting apps. Only way to legit root your phone is to downgrade to kitkat and then root using exploit, then flash prerooted lollipop (that is if you wan't to stay on stock rooted rom). If you don't plan on staying on stock room and only want quick root you have to use kingroot since that's only universal root that can root z1c. When it comes to recovery there you have two choices. To use xzdualrecovery or to unlock bootloader (you will loose drm keys which means you will lose stuff like x-reality) and flash normal recovery. I would go for dual recovery because if you ever wan't to get back to stock you can since stock recovery isn't getting overwritten with xzdr. But if you choose to unlock bootloader first backup TA (you have to be rooted) and then unlock.

I would go with unlock bl method. You can restore TA after rooting so you done lose drm, and it's easy to root with unlocked bl - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72547776&postcount=6

Applied 7.0 ROM but no root

Hi hope you can help. Just recently installed this root and all is working well:

However I now need root access for a few apps to work. With super su installed it says that the device isn't rooted. But thought the ROM would make it rooted? If not how do you root this ROM?

No need for a usb or computer since you have TWRP! Assuming you flashed that ROM with TWRP..
If you don't have TWRP that's bad.
Just go to http://www.supersu.com/download and download the "Recovery Flashable" version and flash it on to your device and after that you should be rooted! REMINDER: Never say yes when TWRP offers to root your device (it might even ask after you flash SuperSU)
