I have a general question for my note 2 possibly moving to a note 4. Can someone tell me the difference between unlocking a phone ans rooting. My note 2 is att and rooted and have it on the straight talk Sim. I picked up a new note 4 for 300 bucks can rooting it do the same as unlocking it.
I'm not in USA but believe I can help clarify. Unlocking relates to the ability to use your phone
on a different network than what it's locked to.
Rooting is completely different, it gives you total control over your device. However be aware that ATT version of N4 is locked up tight and cannot be rooted at the moment. May I spontaneously combust if my facts are wrong.
Hahaha OK well thank you I'll get it unlocked for starters. Straight talk runs on the ATT network so I'll get it unlocked to safe
What is the best way to unlock a phone? Is it a similar to do like flashing via Odin?
You purchase a code, then you put in a different carrier sim card, then type in the code, and the phone is carrier unlocked. No flashing necessary.
Rooting means gaining access to the file system of your phone to install apps, delete files, etc.
If you have no warranty on your phone, you may be able to downgrade to 4.1.1, unlock, and run OTA updates to get back to KK.
I have the Canadian version (sgh-i317m) of the Note 2 that was running the latest 4.4.2. I used Odin to flash back to stock 4.1.1 which tripped the knox counter, unlocked, and flashed back to stock 4.4.2.

I was recently laid off from my job, but still have the Note 2 I had paid for when I started. The company refuses to pay the ETF on the line, so AT&T won't unlock it to let me use the phone on Straight Talk. I'm looking at rooting it, rolling it back to an earlier version, and unlocking it that way, but I'm unclear as to how to do it.
I know I can root, flash a 4.1.1 stock rom and unlock it that way, but I've also seen posts saying all I need to do is flash an old modem. Which is it? And if I'm just flashing back to 4.1.1 to unlock it, is the best course of action to do a nandroid backup of my current state and flash that after unlocking? Everything should stay unlocked, right?
It's the J2 modem, which is the first released..

It's the modem you change because the service menu you dial is for the modem settings.
Yes that is correct. I did that with my buddy's Att GN2 and it worked.
I have a Note 2 i317m from rogers, but I had it unlocked for use on the telus network.
If I root it, will I have to unlock it again ? and will I lose everything on the phone ?
I'm new to rooting, I just don't want to take any chances in losing everything, also, is there a way to back everything up and get it back on the phone after rooting if I choose to root it?
just trying to cover all my bases before I get it rooted.
thanks.
So I'm currently in Europe and I will be here for 2 more months and I would like to unlock my phone because $4.19 a minute is ridiculous. However tmobile support is being, let's say very smart. The first representative said "just visit you're nearest tmobile store and we'll help you out there." After I had already told them I was in a country without tmobile. So I was wondering if there was any way to do this for free? I really don't want to have to spend any more money right now. I'm currently running liquidsmooth lollipops latest build. And I really don't want to have to revert to stock because I currently have Internet speeds of 85kb/s and that would take ages to download and then reset up my phone. All help is greatly appreciated.

Which version should i downgrade to, and could you give me a like to a method of unlocking it?
Before flashing any TW ROMs via Odin, confirm the bootloader and modem on your phone.
I'm not sure but if the T999 is like the i747 (ATT s3 version), you cannot downgrade the bootloader from 4.3 to a lower version. Doing so may brick the phone.
If you are on a 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 bootloader, you should be able to downgrade to stock 4.1.1 and you may be able to unlock for free using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982
If you cannot downgrade to stock 4.1.1, you'll need to buy an unlock code and enter it using a stock Samsung dialler.
Hello,
I tried everything to unlock SGH-M919 - M919TMBFOK3 , The most popular way I tried was to downgrade to 4.4.2 then root it with chainfire, downgrading the modemsto MDL then using regionlock away and the *#0011# sequence as in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile/general/unlock-method-m919-m919n-t3138503
However, I still can't get my phone to work with other sim cards. Even though I don't get the interface asking for a code to unlock it after I reboot, it still says invalid sim card.
Is there any definite way to solving my problem? I would be very grateful for your help!
Is there a reason you can't use an unlock code from TMo? The phone being this old, plus you explaining you're doing it to use it outside the US, I'm pretty sure TMo will hook you up with a code that works in stock.
The reason I ask is because I had the same issue a year ago when I travelled to the UK for work. I felt naked without Google Maps :crying:
Once the phone is running 4.3 or newer bootloader, you can't use the dialler method.
Yes, downgrade to stock 4.4.2, downgrade modem, root, run regionlockaway, flash stock rom, and phone should be network unlock.
So I have a SIM locked S8+, I flashed it to the unlock firmware to debloat, and to see if it will SIM unlock the device (it did not!). Now I have T-Mobile unlocked the device and received the typical email of "the device is unlocked, no unlock code, need to run Device Unlock App to unlock" email.
The issue is, with the unlocked version firmware, I cannot run the Device Unlock app, it simply says the app is not compatible with the device, which is right because you cannot unlock an already unlocked device, seeing that a device is running an unlocked version of the firmware.
Two questions:
1. Do I have to revert back to T-Mobile stock firmware in order to run the Device Unlock app?
2. If so, how to revert back? I have see this can be done for the S8, but have not seen instruction (files) for the S8+.
Thanks!

I have the same question too since I was contemplating on whether I should update my T-Mobile S8+ to the unlocked firmware but then I wondered if I could go back to stock T-Mobile firmware. Seems like no one has an answer for this yet : /
You can revert back 100%

If you flash T-Mobile Unlocked Firmware 955U1 yes you can revert back by just flashing T-Mobile Stock Firmware 955U. It was difficult to revert back before 955U1 was released where we flashed Canadian Unlocked XAC, but we finally got a solution as in the link below.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72525783&postcount=5
Again, if you flash T-Mobile Unlocked 955U1, you just flash T-Mobile Stock 955U to revert back to stock. Note: You'll need to switch between unmodded Odin3 v3.12.7 and modded Odin PrinceComsy for Stock and Unlocked Firmwares. Another option which you don't need is reverting back using Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery Initialization.
Warning!!! When reverting back there's 95% chances of getting a Phone Storage corrupt and the only option is resetting. Meaning you'll lose your data, so backing up your stuff is highly advised.
That option works great ?, just BACK UP and moved files to your SD CARD. I have done it more than 5 times, works great. I haven't UNLOCK MY S8+ yet, I'm getting another one so I'll UNLOCK it. YOU CAN CHECK OUT IMEIFIX.COM OR IMEIGURUS.COM . I have UNLOCK more than 4 S7 Edge, 2 Note4's and these guys work very fast. 100% recommended ?.
