Best controller for emulators AND android games? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone recommend me a controller that has good compatibility for both emulators and android games themselves? I'd like something that easily works. I'm noticing some posts around the internet where people aren't having issues with emulators, but are having issues with android games, or the exact opposite. I have a rooted fire tv in case that is needed for some controller compatibility apk.

I bought the Amazon Fire TV Game Controller, works with anything that supports gamepads. I have a PS3 & Xbox 360 controllers that worked good on somethings and sucked on others. So i've been really happy with the Amazon Game Controller.

I got the Ouya controller. It works well and functions as a mouse as well.

The Amazon controller has worked for me with:
NES
Genesis
SNES
DC
PS 1
I can not get it to figure out N64 commands, and this is an emulator problem. I may have to connect a mouse to map to the controller. If anyone has figured out N64 on Fire TV, please post

Anyone tried the Wiimote?

Which version are you using? I have the Google Play version sideloaded. I would like to get the Fire TV version as it works with the remote, but since I only have the stick, I can't purchase and download it.

I'm curious also if anyone uses a wiimote for any emulators/amazon games. Does the classic controller extension work with it? Does it even work in the emulators at all?
I want to get a controller for my FTV but I have so many around my house I don't want another one, so if I can find one that works with what I want to do I'd rather just use it
Also anyone tried using PS3 controller, does it even work?

I've heard it mentioned that it was possible but no instructions- does anyone know if a wireless Xbox 360 can be paired to the FIre TV, and if so, how? Note- I'm asking about the wireless being paired directly via bluetooth- NOT using a USB dongle or adapter.

Unless there has been some recent development on that, its not possible without the dongle sorry

No. Xbox controllers use a proprietary wireless standard, not straight Bluetooth. It can only be paired with the adapter.

Onlive is... live : controller? Phonejoy?

Pretty exciting stuff. I gave it a shot and it seems to work well, but you really need a controller to go anywhere. Has anyone tried a phonejoy or similar with onlive? Or would you need to get the onlive branded one?
I actually just got my shipment notification from Phonejoy. I'm very interested in seeing if this will work. I'm crossing my fingers since phonejoy states the app must allow keyboard input for their controller to work. Onlive certainly allows for keyboard input. I'll report back once I get my controller.
PhoneJoy partially works
SO far I have managed to get the direction keys to work, but not the regular buttons. I will let you know when or if they are working.
Can we use the sixaxis program and use our wireless ps3 controllers for this?
I'm wondering, has there been any developement? I would LOVE to get my Phonejoy working on OnLive, it would make it simply perfect.

i just emailed onlive.
ofcourse, they want us to buy a universal onlive controller, otherwise they are unwilling to help.
heres a thought, figure out what keys do what on a bluetooth keyboard paired with the phone and then set up phonejoy to use these keys as buttons.

Could anyone provide an update on whether this was successful for you guys? My Kindle Fire HD is arriving tomorrow and I'm interested in using the phonejoy bluetooth controller with it and the OnLive gaming service.
P.S. The noob video for this site is hilarious. And awesome. I hope I'm doing the right thing.

Which Emulators with Controller?

For Mame Which is the best that works with firetv? Is this a good one? MAME4droid(0139)-1.6.1-MULTI.apk. Any other recommendations?
Also is there one for Sega Master System? brings up memories from the old days. :fingers-crossed:

I returned the controller I purchased from amazon as the controller wasn't smooth with mame. Can I use icade?
I'll give the retro arch a shot. thanks for the reply.
I use a Bluetooth Red Samurai gaming controller i picked up from GameStop for $15 for all Android games and Android emulator. No problem and in the back of the controller you have the option of switching from Keypad to Game pad mode.

If you are rooted, try installing the stock 4.2 settings.apk and pairing from the bluetooth category there. That's what I had to do to get my bluetooth keyboard to pair.
Where is that 4.2 settings apk at?
I am tired of being stuck with the old 4.0 version apk.

Did you have to do anything special to get your FTV controller to work with Retroarch? I've had no luck whatsoever.

Has anyone been able to get two controllers connector for two player games? Would love to be able to play some old school ROMs with my son.

Yes Retroarch version with mame 2014 rom and two firetv amazon original controller works well. I made a custom build and signed the apk with one click signer. here is the link. I've tested it with double dragon.. I couldn't get two players to work with the official mame4droid.
Works very smooth except when too much screen draw happens. I hope they made a quad core retroarch version. its so close. what game are you looking to play?

Thanks! I don't have any controllers yet but was thinking of picking up a couple so I could re-live my NES glory days. Would be great to be able to multiplayer. Contra comes to mind.
Yeah thats nice. Contra surely was a nice one. I can't think of any two players. I'll get contra tonight and give it a try. any other suggestions?
My old ones are sega master system with transbot and captain silver. with pico. works very well except the stick dose not work and have to use the arrow keys.
Retroarch doesnt seem to work on the Fire TV Stick. Creashes when loading anything or going into settings. Anyone care to confirm?
Which version?
The 1.0.0.2 version works fine, but the later builds still have botched control mapping and some cores refuse to work.
If you have root and know what you are doing, you can install the latest version of retroarch and copy the cores and get back 1.0.0.2 to paste them into it for access to things like Yabause.

Good evening,
I buy an cheap Ouya and install Cm11 with the How tos (thanks for that!) already works great, but I have no idea how I can pair a Ps3 Controller.
Can somebody tell me how it works? I have searched and read many posts, but I dont found an answer.

I think its the driver. I've used several controllers at once but never had more than 1 PS3 controller.

[Q] games controllers for unrooted

What are the best game controller to work with an un-rooted AFTV?
With the new update I'm using my wired Xbox 360 controller plugged into a hub. It works great with KOTOR and Tales from the Borderlands.
Red samurai from GameStop
The official fire tv controller is actually pretty good. Dualshock 4 is great, but the battery only lasts a few hours.

I read over on http://www.aftvnews.com/alternate-game-controllers-compatible-with-the-fire-tv/ (fifth of sixth comment down) that you need root to edit the keymap for it to work properly.

I don't think so. The only thing that sucks is the battery life is so bad, and there is no indicator if it is running low, so it could just die on you in the middle of a game. Besides that, it's the best possible controller you can use in my opinion. I have not used it on an unrooted ftv though, but it shouldn't make any difference.

@octra,

No, DS3 doesn't work without root. You need an app called "sixaxis controller" to use it.
is there something that can be used as an all-in-one device..gamepad, mouse,& keyboared. dont want to have to buy several pieces of hardware to use with this fire tv stick. something like the sony google tv remote . I have one of those but the stick wont recognize it , even with settings.apk
Thanks for the info. I take it sisaxis is a root only app?

Want to root my AFTV. List of controller compatible games?

You want to root so you can use your controller? My Fire Stick is not rooted, and I use a iPega controller. Just sideload a settings.apk and try to connect it from the BT settings.
Games with controller support i like: BombSquad, PAC-MAN 256, Reaper, Table Top Racing Free and Zen Pinball.
No, I wanna root it so I can use a different launcher (like Kodi), but wanted to know what Android games (ones not officially supported by an AFTV) work on am AFTV with controller.

Ah. I see. Unfortunately, I don't have a list for that. But I would also be interested in this.
I'm glad I am not the only one. With AFTV now supporting USB sticks for storage, and rooting, it has the potential to being a great game console (I have a Moga Pro, and it works great).
I downloaded an Android app called Gamepad Games, that lists gamepad compatible games, and while that is very helpful, I would also like a compatibility list of Android specific games that have been tested on an AFTV.
This is the closest thing i can think of. Its not specific to games but im not sure anyone has maintained a working games list fot aftv.
