[Q] Sideload PwnieExpress PwnPad 2013 on Deb - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Ok so I have a Deb. Currently running 5.0 rooted. I have successfully used MultiRom and have installed Kali PwnPad on a secondary. However, the whole reason I bought this tablet was to get some of the functionality and ease of use that Pwnie offers. It is currently stuck on 4.3.1 for the foreseeable future. I had it running perfect and did a nandroid of it. However, when I restored the nandroid in multirom after installing Lollipop, none of the Pwnie apps work anymore.
If any of you are unfamiliar with the install process for PwnieExpress PwnPad the instructions are here:
https://www.pwnieexpress.com/wp-con...on-FactoryImageInstallationGuide-Detailed.pdf
My question is, given those instructions, is there a way to follow the same process using ADB Sideload within the MultiRom menu to sideload the imagev2.sh file to a new ROM slot in MultiRom? Currently when I load ADB Sideload in MultiRom it just says "starting ADB sideload feature" and never works. Any thoughts?

I figured it out...I was able to untar the file and decompile it. Once I did that I found that they were using a TWRP backup as part of their script! I combined it with another TWRP backup from my device and was successfully able to get it working!
So now I have Lollipop as the primary with Kali PwnPad and PwnieExpress PwnPad as alternates. Rock on!

pwnpad community edition wugfresh toolkit install
HI slashdot when you say decompile do i need a special program?
also if possible could you please post step by step how to do what you say you did so everyone can install pwnpad CE without having to use linux or ubuntu or mac
plus mine the 2013 2nd gen lte model of nexus 7 32gb with sim card so i have the 2014 pwnpad that is for my tablet just need your instructions..

Didn't even see this...I apologize. What you need is to untar the file...on Mac the stock archive utility can do this but I believe 7zip and others will do it. Once you unzip it, you'll see several folders and scripts, one of which is a regular folder for a nandroid backup. Pull that folder out and copy it to your sd card inside the folder for your device, and add that ROM in twrp from a backup. Easy as that!

If this specific question is in another thread, please forgive me and redirect me.
If not, any instruction would be greatly appreciated.
Equipment:
Visual Land, Prestige 7
Model # VL - 107
ICS 4.0.3
Baseband 1.0
Kernel 3.0.8+
Build # 86F5-D1-H1-MO1-1718.20120327
Objective:
To create a backup/recovery img/dump of the existing stock ROM, without having to add "clockwork", "cynogen", etc...
Software on Hand:
Windows 7
Livesuit 1.09
Virtualbox
Ubuntu via Virtual Machine
Please detail everything and speak to me as if I were a little child...
Thanks in advance!
I'm sure you have a recovery on your phone that's a tool to create a backup of stock rom on your sdcard
enter recovery (usually volup+menu or something like that) or you have some options in phone menus to backup device
that will create a set of img files on sdcard that's your backup also you can restore your phone from this backup if you get in trouble
so it's a good idea to have one !
Can this be done with ADB?

That's a negative...
The tablet is completely stock - straight from the box.
In turn, I do not have a recovery (such as clockwork, cyanogen, etc.) that would allow me to make a backup img.
And, I would like to start/learn by making a backup img without such a recovery; i'm assuming this requires using ADB.
Therefore, I need detailed instructions on how to create said backup img...
I have not found any settings or options in the tablet itself that performs this function either.

I understand now this is a tablet so it's common problem for some
well you have to find a way to root device to get access to system files then use a rom dumping tool just take a look here or here
nobody can tell you for sure how to do that this is device specific I do not know to much about that particular tablet just try
I just got this tablet today, and it's rooted out of the box.
Not sure if that helps you, but I wanted to contribute if I could.

VL107 Update Down To 4.0.3/4.0.4
Hello,
I've been trying to figure out how to change my VL-107's OS, and a Recognized Contributor pointed me to this thread.
I've downloaded LiveSuit, but I can't figure out how to make it work. If at all possible, I need two things: an .img file for 4.0.3 or 4.0.4, and instructions on how to apply this update via command prompt or a program that utilizes command prompt.
I have Windows 8.1, my VL-107 (Visual Land Prestige 7), and LiveSuit (which I'd really rather not use).
The only experience I have in flashing involved using command prompt, and I'm much more comfortable doing this than relying on a program to do everything "behind the scenes". Otherwise, I would also be willing to put an .img file on my tablet's "SD card" and apply the update through Recovery mode.

[Q] MutiROM and Ubuntu Touch: Kexec-hardboot failure

Hi all,
I successfully installed MultiROM on my Nexus 7 (2013), and I can boot CyanogenMod.
Therefore, I followed the excellent article "Multi-Booting the Nexus 7 Tablet" that was published in the Linux Journal:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/multi-booting-nexus-7-tablet?page=0,0
Unfortunately, booting Ubuntu Touch does not work. The error message is:
"Error. Kexec-hardboot support required to boot this ROM. Use kernel with kexec-hardboot support."
However, for the installation I chose a patched kernel that includes the kexec-hardboot patch as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2457063
The link contains the following advice:
Installing MultiROM
"Now that your bootloader is unlocked, you can proceed to the trickiest part of this process—installing MultiROM. Grab a copy of it from the XDA-Developers MultiROM thread (the link is in the Resources section of this article; currently the filename is multirom_v10_n7-signed.zip). You'll also need to get the modified TWRP install file (TWRP_multirom_n7_20130404.img) and a patched kernel (kernel_kexec_422.zip). Rename the TWRP install file to recovery.img, then hook your tablet back up to your computer, and place these files in the root of its filesystem (keep the .zip files zipped—don't unzip them). "
This is what I did, I used:
kernel_kexec_flo_443.zip
and
multirom-20140511-v24-flo.zip
Any ideas how to get Ubuntu Touch running?

[Q] Senior needs help rooted Nexus 7 and lollipop update

Please help and please be kind and patient with this senior citizen.
I have a rooted Nexus 7(2013). It is rooted at 4.4.4.
I saw the released Android updates to lollipop that I want to use and I need help with the procedures as I have to deroot my Nexus 7 first?
I also want to break it down to steps.
I assume that to update to lollipop, I would need to:
Backup using Nandroid
Deroot my Nexus.
Go to the Android site, then update to the latest version of lollipop.
When the upgrade if over, then re-root.
Even, though I was able to root my Nexus 7, I have forgotten many of the specifics.
Please help guide me as I think I need to:
Backup my Nexus 7 – I have both Titanium Backup Pro and Nanroid Backup Pro
Should I use Nandoid Online backup to ensure I can recover?
Nandroid Settings - Please help me with these Nanroid settings aftger selecting Custom Backup.
Backup Name – UTZ Timezone
Type – TWRP or Clockworkmod – I assume I select TWRP
Normal Backup Mode?
Do I select any of Yaffs2 as Tar or Exclude Dalvik Cache, Exclude Google Music Files.I have to admit, I have no idea what Dalvik and Yaffs2 are.
I will move to TWRP backup to my PC because it winds up being about 3gb and I haisve a 16gb Nexus 7.
This is where I get very confused. What exactly do I do and use start the derooting? Should I use the WugFresh(1.99) toolkit?
After derooting, I should NOT restore anything. I do an upgrade of Android to lollipop.
After my Nexus 7 is lollipop, I would need to do a recovery/restore of my Nandroid backup??
I have the following products that might help:
Titanium Backup Pro
Nandroid Backup Pro
BusyBox Pro
SuperSu
Root Checker Basic
NoBloat Free
Thank you for your time, expertise, kindness and patience in advance
Jon
Need a little more information. Understand you are rooted, but do you have custom recovery installed?
You actually don't need to remove the root before you update to lollipop if you use a factory image from Google.

This is where I get confused and think that I am overcomplicating things.
I don't know if I have a custom recovery installed? I assume that I would have had to have made one. :crying:
How can I check? In Nanroid?
Can I make a new one?
It is great if I don't have to remove the root to upgrade to lollipop. When I was promoted by Google to update to lollipop, it failed, because I was rooted.
The bottom line is that I want to upgrade to 5.x and want my Nexus 7 rooted. :good:
Please tell me what information you need.
Thank you,
Jon

Alright, so the fact that your Nexus received the prompt to update tells me that you do not have custom recovery installed.
What you are going to want to do (easiest way to update as far as I am concerned) is just flash a factory image from Google. In order to do this, you will need to get your hands on a few things first:
1.) Windows PC/Laptop
2.) Micro USB cable
3.) ADB and Fastboot files (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979)
4.) Factory Image from Google for Lollipop for the N7 (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images - If you have the 2013 N7, get the one that says 5.0.1 (LRX22C) under the heading "Factory Images "razor" for Nexus 7 [2013] (Wi-Fi)")
5.) ADB/Fastboot USB drivers (your Nexus should install them when plugged in while booted to the Bootloader)
Now, download the ADB and fastboot files. Go to that thread, and follow the instructions to install ADB and Fastboot SYSTEM WIDE so that ADB and Fastboot will work from any directory (makes the rest of this process VERY easy). Once you run through that installer, and everything is good, download the system image listed above. Once it is downloaded, go to the directory it was downloaded to, and UNZIP it (right click it and select Extract here, or open the file and select Extract All).
Now, power off your N7, and then power it on, holding VOLUME DOWN. You will be booted into the BOOTLOADER, this is known as FASTBOOT MODE. Now, connect USB cable to the Nexus 7. The computer will probably say "Installing Device Driver Software". Let it finish. Now, press the START button, and in the search box, type CMD. A command window will open up. Type in the following without the quotes: "fastboot devices".
Now it should show something like this:
Code:
List of attached devices
HJFK54HSWE fastboot
If it says nothing, then the drivers are not working. Reply back to this thread, and I will explain how to update the drivers (don't want to confuse you now). Now assuming that everything is working correctly, all you still have to do is flash the 5.0.1 factory image. Close the command window that is open, and go to the directory where you downloaded the factory image. There is a file inside that folder called "flash-all.bat". With the tablet connected and in fastboot mode, double click the flash-all file. That will do EVERYTHING necessary to flash the factory image, and your tablet will reboot in lollipop.
Now, I don't think this will overwrite the root. If it does, and when you reboot, SuperSU or Superuser (whichever you were using before) isn't in your app draw, then reply here, and we will root you up.
"Factory Images "razor" for Nexus 7 [2013]
Why the hell is it named 'razor' in DL area?? This machine is 'FLO', right???
Razor is the name for all 2013 Nexus 7s. From there, you have deb and flo to differentiate between the LTE and Wi-Fi models.

Actually, Razor is Google's code name for the Flo, and the Deb is the RazorG. Just like the Nexus 9 is the Flounder on XDA and Volantis on the Google image site. There are almost always two code names for Nexus devices (the community code name, and then Google's, just to keep everything as confusing as humanly possible..)
^^ LOL, but how totally stupid. In their own factory images download area, there are SEPARATE download areas for WIFI/LTE... why in God's name don't they use DEB/FLO? -______-

[Q] Lollipop 5.0.2 Update via TWRP

Hi Guys
I am running stock Android 5.0.1 LRX22C on my Nexus 2013 which is rooted and has TWRP installed.
I just got a notification that an update (9.8Mb) to 5.0.2 was available - however when I accept the update & the device reboots - it boots to TWRP?
Do I have to unroot / uninstall TWRP (go back to stock recovery) to be able to update to 5.0.2 or is there an easier way?
Thanks in advance for any help
You don't have to uninstall twrp.. You do have to unroot though.. If you use wugfresh's nexus root toolkit, it's pretty easy.. You just need to backup your important apps /data, and click the unroot /back to stock button. Select which version of Android you are currently running, and it will unroot your tablet. Then go back in and become a developer (settings, about, and tap on the build number 8 times) .. Then go into developer options, and re enable usb debugging.. After that, install the update.. Finally go back into nexus root toolkit, and re root the device... Fairly easy

Nice one - thanks very much. Not tried the WUGFRESH toolkit as I have always used the MJSkip version - so will give it a whirl
I unrooted (manally.. toolkits.. meh) and did the OTA last night, but just got bloops...
I downloaded the full package and flashed system.img, back up and running.

What did you use to flash the system.img? Will Flashify or Odin do it or do you have to hook up to a Windows PC and do it that way?

If you download Factory Images 5.0.2 (LRX22G) then you can extract only the system.img from the pack.
You have to flash su.zip

Cheers - am in business - now running 5.0.2 & TWRP 2.7.1.1
Have a weird issue - I have made a TWRP backup which I can see in the TWRP folder on my SD card when I use the built in file manager in TWRP.
However - when I boot Android 5.0.2 & use ES File Explorer the TWRP directory on the SD card of the Nexus 7 is not visible.
I have an iMac & when I connect the Nexus 7 to the Mac (using Android File Transfer (special app for Mac) I still cannot see the TWRP directory
How do I make this visible to Android? I need to copy over the TWRP backup to the PC for safe keeping & the free up some space on the Nexus 7.
Thanks

Any reason you went with a version of TWRP from six months ago instead of the latest version? http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/flo
As for pulling stuff from SD, I have no idea, maybe try the thing someone suggested with selinux (restorecon). I don't use MTP to do any transfers, all of my sd card backup stuff is done using rsync and automated by Tasker.

On lineage.org, I cannot understand this article for rooting my A7 (2017).

On page https://wiki.lineageos.org/adb_fastboot_guide.html whatever is written under Linux is beyond my understanding. I am using Ubuntu 14.04 and want to root my A7 (2017) with that OS. I have extracted the .zip file namely platform-tools_r30.0.1-linux.zip which doesn't match with the article's 2nd point under Linux, that is Extract it somewhere - for example, ~/adb-fastboot. I do not extracted any folder with name 'adb-fastboot' however I got a folder namely 'platform-tools'.
Now coming to the 3rd point what they mean by Add the following to ~/.profile: which is followed by some commands. Do I need to open some text file namely ".profile" or something and add those commands to it??
And 5th point says You may also need to set up udev rules: see this repository for more info.. So how do I know if I need to set up udev rules? And what are udeve rules in the first place?
I am supposing to root my phone step by step. But it seems very hard. I can't get hold of a Windows PC which seems easy compared to Linux. Also I am not following any guide on XDA Developers because my phone is supported by official Lineage OS website and I am following their instructions.
Hi,
Adb fastboot guide isn't necessary for root on LineageOS. You can find the root addon here https://download.lineageos.org/extras. You'll want to download 16.0 arm64 one.
Just enter your recovery (TWRP) and flash the root addon. Later you can enable it in developer options.
Some users flash magisk (search xda for it) so you can try that too.

Using ADB isnt the "normal" way to root a samsung device.
The preferred method is installing a custom recovery (like TWRP, SHRP or Orangefox) and then simply install magisk in the recovery.
I dont know if its even possible to root through ADB to be honest.
Also, even if your phone is supported by Lineage, that doesnt mean every guide on their website fits perfectly to your device.

Then can you please please tell me how can I root my A7 (2017) with baseband version A720FXXU9CTA2? I also prefer TWRP over any other method because I have used it before but it was near a decade ago and now I have forgotten so much things. It's best if I am given a way to root on Linux (my work computer) otherwise I have to wait or purchase a Windows PC.
(PS: Every forum made for a specific phone on XDA should have an official thread with step by step rooting instructions.)

If you want to install lineage anyway, you dont need to care about the RMM and no-verity things.
For rooting, you can simply search for a guide on how to install magisk on google, there are more than enough.
