I'm posting this because I just ran into a problem with setting up my AFTV, and I wanted to share my solution in case someone else has the same problem.
Don't try to set your AFTV up using a 4:3 Monitor. You can get through registration, but you face a black screen while AFTV tries to load and show the first-usage animated video. The video will only play on a proper widescreen device.
(I was using a spare 4:3 monitor to set up my AFTV because I was doing it at my computer desk.)

I've run into the same issue. I got the same black screen when I tried going through the initial setup with a 1680x1050 monitor using an HDMI to DVI adapter. I don't believe it's an issue with the aspect ratio. Rather, I think it's the lack of HDCP compatibility with the monitor. I think the video will not play if it does not detect an HDCP compliant display, and if the video doesn't play, it won't continue the setup process.

Yes... I thought that might be a problem too.. But fortunately, thanks to the guide on your site, I got to the point where I could just bring my device out to the main TV, plug it in, and root away.

I am happy with the way Miracast works with my Nexus 7 2013 and Netgear PTV3000. Except for an occasional 1 sec slip, the screen is mirrored perfectly. Though there are some things I would like to change.
1. Is it possible to show a video full screen in TV (without the previous, home buttons)?
2. Is it possible to turn the tablet's screen off while the TV portion continues to work? Currently, when I turn off the tablet display, TV also goes blank.
3. Is it possible to route Skype and Hangouts audio to TV? Currently, when I video chat in these apps, video is shown in TV, but audio gets played through tablet.
Mirracast is for screen mirroring only. If your screen is off, so is Miracast. What you need is ChromeCast.
^^THIS!! A ChromeCast is what ya need!! I want one for myself too! As soon as a Best Buy within 1 hour of me gets 1 in stock, I'm going to grab it!!
Sent from my '13 Nexus 7 FHD using XDA Premium HD
Thanks guys for your replies.
I came across two apps: full!screen & ScreenStandby. I haven't tried them yet since both require the tablet to be rooted.
While in Miracast, YouTube, Netflix and MXPlayer shows in fullscreen. For others, I think the full!screen app should be enough. ScreenStandby has an option to turn of screen while mirroring. That I guess would solve my second question.
Just got my fire tv in, plugged it into my tv and set it all up but noticed it looked pretty crappy display wise, I am using it on an older tube tv but it actually has a HDMI port at the back of it so it can't be that old right? Anyways, the TV says its 1080p ready but I've never used anything HDMI on it before, is there anything I can do to make it look less crappy? I tried to go into the AFTV display settings to change them but its stuck on 'auto', it doesn't let me switch to any of the other options such as 1080p 60hz or even 720p 60hz, just says they aren't supported.....The TV also has component inputs and S-video if that helps but thats all.

It sounds like the Fire TV is unable to detect the TVs resolution capabilities and is therefore resorting to a low setting. Try following this guide to make the Fire TV cycle through various resolutions: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-access-hidden-resolution-options-on-the-fire-tv/
Thanks for responding, probably the only helpful response I've had anywhere I managed to get my tv onto 480p using that cycle, probably the best I'll be able to get.

Glad I could help.
Iv got a dozen AFTV 1's and sticks!
However my first AFTV2, after opening and turning it on for the first time, it updated and then booted into a blank screen, nothing! Could not get into the resolution settings, nothing dead! Kaput! sent it back!
2nd AFTV2 I had issues with connecting to the wifi, and then when it was downloading the update, the wifi kept dropping out so I had to download it in bits, when it finally downloaded it installed but the new Wi-Fi remote keeps dropping off! Difficulty in pairing it up at times - so annoying! I tried everything in the end I just give up and used my fire tv stick remote!
I have found that apps I used on the AFTV1 like Advanced Task Killer no longer works as it does not show the correct RAM and does not show the processes that are currently running, so I can’t kill Kodi if Kodi crashes! Works perfectly on AFTV1.
On AFTV1 I use the standard amazon 4 USB amazon hub with a wireless mouse dongle and usb drive and both work, on the AFTV2, the hub doesn’t work, I haven’t tried to power it to see if that would work!
No optical, I guess no big deal as HDMI to TV then optical out to sound receiver! Will try this way! But I would of thought going directly would be better!
Apps like CCleaner and others the screen goes small like an android phone! Or stretched on some apps! On the AFTV1 the screen would at least get filled to the whole screen! It makes these side loaded apps look crap!
I can’t find the 4K content? Although I don’t have a 4K TV! Do you need to connect to a 4K TV for this content to suddenly become available?
The AGK FIRE app doesn’t work! My AFTV2’s don’t even appear on the list, so I can’t side load apps from say another AFTV or phone!

A few quick questions for somebody who already has the Moto z play.
Does this phone have wireless display screen mirroring in the stock room? You can check by going settings -> display -> cast and then there should be three dots in the top right you can expand to check and enable casting via wireless display.
Secondly can someone in the U. S. Check if fire emblem heroes is available on the play store for this phone?
Thanks guys
If you mean Miracast, it's not an option from stock, I assume this is because Motorola wants people to buy the projector mod. You can enable Miracast, but you'll have to root your phone first so you can edit build.prop.
I was able to install Fire Emblem Heroes in Canada.
located in the US
no dots in the cast menu. as @timster01 said, Miracast is not an option. you'll need either a Chromecast or to root to enable Miracast.
I've been running FEH flawlessly. great game.
man chromecast is blazing fast something so so rocking hardware! Buy it blindly!! I bought it very cheap hardly used like new one, and its rock solid!! . My expensive and not much expensive smart led TVs(1 panasonic and other sony) have miracast and it sucks like hell, takes life to connect then plays and stutters even on a rapid fast internet connection that I have, its only and only miracast to blame! "mark my words". Chromecast connects 100% always immediately and all apps icon shows so nicely first then video starts. I keep watching videos and movies, its super awesome!!!!! In miracast you only can mirror your phone. In chromecast you start the video and it keeps playing on your tv, and do whatever you want on your phone, make calls or anything! All still will be super smooth. Never disconnected even on 1 bar wifi connection on my phone, something great within that chromecast that takes care of it or whatever. That's why its good all apps are also pushing towards the chromecast "cast" icon. You will notice when you install any video watching good reputed apps now, they will show a pop up to show that you can cast them. Its not about the projector mod at all. First its really about chromecast, as it shows in the wireless display section as well, without root, without changing commands and without the three dots in the top right. Being all google stockish that's why.
Moto Z Play perfectly made for and is definitely meant for chromecast!
Dear All,
I would really appreciate if anyone could help me here.
I have issues with casting my phone screen to a display, let alone choose the advertised options like cast with screen off.
RN8PRO MIUI 11.0.2.0 (PGGEUXM)
When I am on that cast screen and tickle the cast button to the right, it just does nothing at all.
I have seen online people doing the same thing and then it opens a pop-up at bottom of the screen and start searching for display. For me it does not, it just stays there doing nothing.
If I leave that screen and come back it is again disabled.
So my simple question has anyone managed to cast anything using that built-in function?
I can cast using apps with cast-enabled function no issue, and yes I have Miracast enabled device, yet the built-in cast function seems completely broken -or- I have disabled a service it needs to work, idk.
With the app Wireless Display for MIUI I can workaround this and cast my display at the very least, however, I dont have access to any of the cast options advertised on the cast page.
The fact it does not open the small pop-up at bottom of the screen searching for devices makes me think I have some kind of problem, either permissions too restricted on something or some needed services disabled.
Please help if you can.
Regards.

Those two services are needed for casting to work:
Mi Connect Service (com.xiaomi.mi_connect_service)
UniPlay Service (com.milink.service)
So if you debloated your phone you need those two back on and running. If they are, search for remote display happens and remote displays are found as expected.

I have the same problem in note 5 pro and Poco. I read somewhere that mi uses Miracast and it doesn't support Chromecast. Sorry if I am mistaken.

Yes that's also the information I have.
However my problem described above also concerns casting to a Miracast device. The built-in method from settings just does not do anything for me, it does not search for anything at all actually. Therefore cannot find anything either
I am surprised not more people are using casting/mirroring features of their phones, RN8Pro being such a powerfull devices it makes a very nice handcomputer.
I wonder if that built-in function works for anyone.
Regards.
The Cast option does not work for me either.
I use the Wireless display option to cast to Chromecast.
Is there a difference between these two options?
I think I found the solution or at least the source of my own problem (took me enough time...).
As I was expecting I had debloated my phone a bit too much and removed some services needed for features I am using which at that time did not look like that needed for me.
Those two services are:
Mi Connect Service (com.xiaomi.mi_connect_service)
UniPlay Service (com.milink.service)
So if you debloated your phone you need those two back on and running. If they are, search for remote display happens and remote displays are found as expected.
Once you have reenabled those two services, the cast button is again available from the quick access and working.

I know that our phone is using the MiraCast technology which google has been removed from Chromecast (it was there before) and Android starting A9. Xiaomi keeps it in MIUI that's why we still have it.
However what I am uncertain of, is how MIUI is supporting Chromecast too? From what I read you can still mirror to a Chromecast if you are willing to use the Home app.
Myself now that I got some Amazon Fire TV stick, I prefer those a lot more for the same price compared to Chromecast, simply because you can mirror your screen without having to be connected to internet, one among many things that annoyed me on Chromecast. And they used Miracast technology.
Hope this helps.

Yeah I figured this finding would be probably useful to someone. Took me about 3 months to come up with the solution out of random tbh. Strangely none seemed to experience that issue judging by the number of answers I received in that time. And I am expecting people on XDA to debloat their phones out of the box like I did, maybe they were just more cautious than me and went a bit less aggressive on the matter. idk.
Anyway I am glad my findings could help you out too!
Regards.
I have Redmi Note 8 Pro and casting lags so badly... when I cast my laptop screen to my Philips TV.. there is NO problem at all.. But when I cast my phone's screen - huge lag and distorted picture....

It has been a while since I last attempted to solve this issue.
Last I was working on this, my researches has lead me to think the resolution of the phone which is quite big, might have been too big for casting receiver devices to process smoothly. Casting receivers do not have as big of a display resolution which often is 720p max or maybe lower for some.
As a result my investigations suggested me to try lower the phone display resolution before casting.
Unfortunately I am lacking time to test my theory and see if lowering phone resolution actually improves the playback on the casting device.
Please let us know of your findings if you decide to test those hypothesis yourself.
Good Luck!

I am sorry I have not had time to do some testings myself.
All I know and noticed was while casting from apps with built-in casting feature, it worked like a charm, however as soon as I started to mirror my screen, then it was lagging too.
Back then I assumed it was because of phone resolution vs casting devices because it was way bigger than casting receiver (usually at best 720p max and even 480p for older devices), but if you are saying it does not change anything well I am running out of ideas at the moment.
You changed both the resolution and the density of the screen using the following two commands?
Code:
begonia:/ $ wm size
Physical size: 1080x2340
begonia:/ $ wm density
Physical density: 440
Those are original RN8P resolution and density, they might be both too big for casting devices to handle, idk, might require testing.
Please let us know if your findings.

Can you try debloat this UniPlay Service (com.milink.service) and try whether you are able to cast remote display?
I have the same problem. Both services are active though. MIUI 13 on redmi note 10 pro
