Android System eating the battery

Hey all, I don't know if anyone has even noticed on their Evo's but on mine, the Android system usually eats most of the battery. I noticed there is a ton of processes under Android system that are running compared to like five on my Hero. I've never seen the core system processes take up more than maybe 15% of the battery, but right now, I'm at like 41% with 16m 6s of CPU total and 47s of CPU foreground. If anyone knows why this is or a way to fix it, please let me know. I'm on the first MR update. I've been able to get a lot of battery stuff figured out, if I can get the system to calm down, then I should be able to get even better battery life than my Hero.
I'm seeing the same thing, android system is at 96% battery use after letting the phone sit overnight. Never saw that on my nexus, this is strange.
Could be related to the fact that everything is syncing up, I just activated last night too.

Yeah, the system seems to have calmed down a bit today, though I also have the OC widget running to keep the processor lower during sleep. I'm guessing its helping, but I'm not sure if there is something else to get it down. I almost never even saw the System show up in usage on my Hero, now its one of the top contributers. I got used to having custom roms on the Hero, but so far all I need on the Evo is unrevoked. I know a lot of people around here don't like it, but I found I only needed a couple of apps that require root and so far love it. That OC widget really comes in handy.
maybe i can clear things up a little bit for you guys...what you see in the battery use section is distributed across 100% of the time since you last had it plugged in. if you notice all the percentage numbers add up to 100%.
if you plug your phone in and turn it on and off on you will see that android system is probably around the 90's thats because android system has used 90+ percent of the phone since you plugged it in....over time that number will lower, becuase other things will start using the battery power... what you see is a percentage based on time. not based on whats actually working RIGHT THEN AND THERE do you guys understand?
I too am having that problem and at 15% battery life warning - it still shows my Android system @ 40-44% usage after 8hrs of work.
I mostly text message all day long due to work - make phone calls and recieve calls from work every hour. GPS on for no more than 15min all day long to get direction when my keymap book doesnt help.
4g off, bluetooth off, background data 15 min only (gps) than off, gps off when not in use, mobile network (3g) off when not in use.
I would have figured my screen being on would have drained my battery life since I check text message every 10-15mins for 8hrs...
So went to work at 9am, 100% life
got off work 6pm, 25% life
I've done all the tricks, cdma only, force stopped a bunch of apps, goggle talk off, sync off, making sure maps/gps has been closed (forced or not)
still disappointed with battery life.
Unrooted Evo
My crappy AT&T Razr lasts me 2-3days with text message + call + 1.5hr of playing Bejeweled a day
*facepalm* you guys don't get it....

check your hardware version there is a thread about different types of evos and it seems like everyone who has the hardware revision 0001 has really bad battery life. i would exchange your device.
Yes we know, Freelancerx, or at least I do. But after over 8 hours and the system is still using more of the battery than anything else is a little disturbing. Never seen that on any other device. I have Hardware 0002.
I have this same issue with hardware version 0002. I run Fresh 1.0.1, i use Netarchy-toastmod kernal, have latest radio. I have also tried Damage Control (did get slightly better battery life out of DC but not amazingly different)
after 7 hrs since unplugged my andriod system is at 39%, cell standby 28% phone idle 20% display 9%.
i dont have bluetooth, wifi or 4g on. I use juicedefender+ultimate to turn off apn when screen is not on. I use set CPU to underclock when i am unplugged and go down to 128 when screen off and i am Stilll lucky if i make it all day with moderate usage.
Every day it is the same andrioid system is around 40% of the usage for the time it was unpluged.
the following is listed under included packages (not sure if this shows the same for everyone or if it shows what packages are running)
BRCMBluetoothService - Bluetooth is not on so if it shows packages running this may be an issue
Sync Feeds - I have all android syncs off and mail at 6 hours
settings storage
Rosie Utility
Acounts & syync
Account and sync settings
settings
HTC Widget Download Manager
Network Location
Setup
HTC Checkin service
Checkin serivce
VPN services
Android system
Wonder if there is something to the android system on these (ie something not turning off that should) or if we are all just crazy and happen to get the same results.
I had a hardware 0002 model and often experienced the same thing with high system % usage.
My phone was replaced, due to a screen issue, and now I have the 0003 model and seems system % is much lower so far.
I haven't installed any system update yet, so I am on the first original release rom (not rooted yet).
Going to be testing it for a few days before I update and root, so I can make a fair comparison between the original and current oem's.

I think everyone here understands this. the question i think we are trying to figure out is why with similar usage and configurations some people get 40-60% android systems usage while others get 10% over the same period of time.
Android system is way too high.

Yes but if it is configured in an optimal way then android system is always beneath cell standby and phone idle.
For example, today after 15h 28m 23s since unplugged I have...
Cell stanby 38%
Phone idle 37%
Android System.....12%
That is with background processing with auto syncing every hour or so.

Why is batterylife worse on Froyo?

I'm getting 4-5x idle consumption on latest JPA. Hope this is still not final..
I see that next version of Android is already trying to discredit previous one. Don't be afraid, gingerbread, we will update to you anyway =))
On a more serious role - I see approximately the same battery.
Re-calibrate your battery.
A bit worse on my end on IDLE, but same on usage, close to 8hrs of battery life watching a 720p movie.

Whats a good method of recalibrating it aside from deleting the battery stats..
Speaking of battery stats, a lot of people misunderstand this as the file that keeps the current charge of the battery.
my standby time of the battery is great. No drop in battery after a full nite of sleep.
however, surfing net on data really eats a lot, 1% every 2 or 3 times.. really fast

Maybe you just can't understand well the charts.
for example: Music Player 25%, it doesn't mean music player consumed 25% battery; This means that when music player was worked, then battery consumed was 25% - what did consume it? - The music player + display + some refresh + etc...
Yeah, I know a little bit strange logic for "Windows taskmanager" browser kids; but this technic is general in mobil IT (maybe Google should hide this feat, bcoz lot of users are confused; and ask again and again and again and again and again...)

I dont even think he is basing it on the battery chart usage, I dont think anyone does.. we are just looking at the battery indicator. If we idle for 8hrs we epxect no more than 2% battery drop.
I get 20% battery drop in froyo for 8 hours during the night without even switching the phone screen on once!
Maybe because of all of the services I have?
I have the following real time services:
1. google stuff
2. exchange (touchdown)
3. Tango
4. whatsapp
5. Chrome to phone
6. SMS Backup+ (backs up SMSs as soon as they arrive)
In addition to that, I have two email addresses configured in the stock email app with 1 hours pull time, and in "accounts and sync" I have facebook and twitter put as sync once a day.
I have a bluetooth headset connected all the time and receiving calls though it, I make and receive almost 1 hour of call, probably 5 SMSs, WiFi is on all the time, and the display is set to auto.
It is also worth mentioning that I have the JPA, OCLF and the 341MB ram kernel (250Hz) with the enhanced GT TWLauncher, no live wall paper, no auto syncing widgets.
My battery lasts almost 8 hours until it is flat, in which I have another charger at work, that a good 2 hours charge keeps me going until sleep time, where it is flat again, and then I put it to charge all night long.
If anyone is having my same configuration and settings, please share your experience.
Oh, I have disabled the haptic feedback completely and the clicking sounds universally also.

This. Tango is broken, it keeps your phone awake, even when the screen turns off. Uninstall Tago and you're good.

Charge the battery FULLY, & start discharging it, when it comes down to 5% or something, go delete the battery.bin (search the forums) or some such file. You need root. The restart, Viola, your battery is indicating the exact charge.

May I ask where did you get this information?
AFAIK, phone usage timer "in battery stat" is not increasing while the phone screen is off, indicating that phone is not operational.

I dunno what tango exactly does but i can only confirm this: tango kills the battery in no time. even the newest version claimed to be "fixed for sgs", it still eats 5% an hour in standby just by adding tango.
besides, tango doesnt work very good anyway.

I've read about that by deleting the batterystats bin file, Im still looking for a solid explanation on whats exactly in that file, from my own understanding its just a battery usage history.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-722862.html
how are you using your phone ?
I see a lot of these threads talking about battery.
But bottom line is - How do you use your phone.
You have to compare apples withe apples.
Only 1 person in this thread described how he / she is using the phone.
Thats something you can compare with
I usually have mine running for 8-10 hours and have to charge. (almost empty then)
But im a heavy user.
Blutooth headset - Wifi - Sometimes GPS.
Aways on fastest netvork.
Exchange and Google mail, facebook and twitter.
Everything consumes battery.
BUT having said this -
I was on a vacation in France, and stopped every service, as im from another country and did not want to pay expensive roming prizes.
The phone now lasted 2-3 days on 1 charge, and this was all new for me
You get the drift
Forget about this battery charge discharge / charge delete stats thingy.
It will absolutely not give you longer battery run time.
Maybe the battery indicator will be slightly different, thats all.
Not worth the effort.
Hope this helps you
MKrogh
I think I found this over on the Desire forums but these steps have helped me immensely. I did these steps just last night, and I unplugged my phone at 12am and now at 9am it's at 90%, with 3G turned on with syncing once an hour.
With your phone on, charge it to 100%. Once it reports it is full, disconnect the phone and turn it off. Plug it in again, charge it until it says it is full (1 minute or so). Then disconnect again, turn it back on, and plug it in again. Charge it until it's full. Disconnect.
I find that after I do that, the battery life improves IMMENSELY for at least a couple days, or until my next flash (still testing).

Hi, I also have a question regarding recalibration. I have the OCLF v2 installed and find / -name battery<somethingwhatever>.bin shows me 3 files batterystats.bin (I'm pretty shure this is because of the oneclick lagfix). Do I have to delete all 3 files or is it only necessary to delete the "real" one?

Strange Battery/CPU Usage

So my battery life has been average, nothing great but nothing terrible. Today I noticed the battery was draining quicker than usual and the phone was slightly laggier and warmer than usual. I looked at battery usage and "Android OS" was at 70%, when seemed abnormally high. I clicked on that and 'total CPU' was at 13 hours. Anyone have any suggestions? I uninstalled some recent apps and my brightness has been relatively low throughout the day..and I've restarted the phone a couple times. I also heard Android OS often can mean some Google services too.

That is insanaly high but i feel your utter pain bro..
My best advice is to try and restart the phone. Try and also remove the battery charge it fully and then just leave it for couple hours with the phone locked and display off.. Are you using NFC on location high, wifi and bluetooh all those battery eating goodies if so turn them off?
Try those suggestions and let me know how you get on. If you still having issues i tell you the next stage to the diagnosis (hopefully) which is what I i done lol..

Well, right now my phone is charging. Android OS is down to 55% which is still way too high. I've already restarted the phone a couple times and just uninstalled Chrome Beta since that was my last app I installed and I figured it might have been doing something. I use WiFi a decent amount but I almost always have NFC and Bluetooth off (and Auto-Sync when I'm not charging). I have location on "battery saving mode".

Hmm, Right that seems to abnormal the next stage is to hop on to the Play Store. Download and install an app called 'Greenify' this all go through your system to see what is running that takes a lot of apps and directs you to stooping/disabling them...
On a side note is your brightness level set too high or is it on auto brightness try set it on 40% if you can...
I can't really say much more at this stage? Try those up and report back

Well, it seems to have sort of fixed itself. I woke up this morning and "Android OS" usage was down to about 15% and the CPU Total and Keep Awake time reset also. On a side note, I got great battery life today by turning off Google Now, background data, auto-sync, location, and keeping brightness at about 35-50% (which I usually do anyway).
That's really good glad it's sorted it self out keep an eye out on it and keep me posted coz I had more to suggest but hey ho

Its all good

Is your phone rooted? No, it's not the reason, but it may help.
Prosecutor: Objection! Judge - relevance?
Me: Your Honor, I have a point.
Judge: Sustained, you may proceed.
Hi thanks for the answer yes my phone is rooted
Cannot in any way connect the root status of the phone (?) to excessive drain on the watch.
First day of using it (got it yesterday) I got about 6 hours out of my watch. I went through playing with everything yesterday already, so not that much action today, only the regular Gmail and Hangouts notifications. Top consumer, as per the OP an unnamed app. I would have expected more from my watch, to be honest. Ideas?
Oh, and got the update notification for 5.0.2 directly after turning it on and pairing, so I'm on 5.0.2 already.

Hi, i got the same issue since i updated to 5.0.2. I used to get a full heavy use day and still remain 30%40% at the end of the day, after the update i only get 11-12 hours of use. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Note: My phone is also rooted.
I'm not fully through testing/verifying the following, but I made an obervation.
I used the watch the other day and got about 18+ hours out of it. Dont know exactly, just put it on the charger and was happy still having juice left.
The following day, all was going well up until to that moment I started using a timer app on my phone, which counted down at 5 minute intervals and showed a live updating notification doing so. I didnt pay attention to the watch, as the timer is phone only, but as I checked the watch at some point for something different, I noticed the battery dropped significantly since I last checked. Upon checking the battery stats, I found that the charge started dropping at about the moment I started continuously timering.
I take from this, that when using tools which interact with or update your phones notification drawer, the watch will get somehow polled as well. But I am still investigating.
In case you wonder: its an ingress portal hack countdown timer.
Question about settings?

Do you by chance have your dev options enabled on your device that your Moto 360 is connected to? If so, I did a test on my device to see if that was a battery hog on my Moto 360 and turns out it seems to be. Un-named app (android icon) showing the most usage but the graph I have shows upon Dev options enabled, battery began to plummet badly. Just an observation. I perform testing on mobile and wearable as part of my job but I didn't have a way to analyze any logs for this wearable (moto 360). I don't have Moto's log analysis tool.
I do have dev options enabled. But as the watch is now generally behaving well, I don't think it's connected but happened to you by accident. This is only a guess though.
To be honest, I'm on xda with a couple of posts made already, of course I have dev options enabled  I use plenty of tools day in day out which need dev options. I also on a regular basis manipulate my device via adb, so dev options really is a must.
Anyway, I will observe this some more and get back to this thread in case I find any new developments.

Battery draining issuein Realme X

I brought this phone on first sale.
On 3-4 days of usage I realized that the battery is draining too fast on standby mode.
When I checked the battery usage following two apps keep on running 24hrs in background:
1.Google Play Services
2.OppoDolbyService
They almost consume 30% battery in background each.
I could find no way of stopping these apps.
When I sleep with 14% battery at night I always find my phone switched off in the morning.
Kindly help.
Doesn't happen in mine...
Last night it fell by 1 or 2% overnight (about 6 hours).
But then, I'm very careful about what apps I download.
Try clearing the cache of those misbehaving apps.
Good luck

Same issue here. Got my device just yesterday. Battery drain overnight was about 13%. If this is the condition now then what if when the device is older. I do have a lot of apps installed and 3 apps can auto start (else they wont work as they are messaging apps, right? ), so should I disable them as well ?

Update : So I disabled all sorts of vibration, fingerprint wake on movement detection, double tap screen on, basically disabled all sorts of sensor function, and I personally don't like the animations in these Chinese roms so I disabled that as well, phone feels snappier, Sleep mode is on, auto start apps is off for all. So after all this battery backup is great now, overnight drain is also 2-3% max. So all good.
