Codecs for Samsung tab pro 8.4 - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

Hi guys I've read everywhere, but have not found a solution yet. I previously had a nexus 7 and it played almost everything with MX player. Now that I have this Samsung tablet almost any movie will not play. I have already converted videos, installed MX player, BSplayer , VLC, etc.. I hace also downloaded the Codec pack for MX player (apparently in the last update they were removed for license isues or something like that). Is there anything else you can suggest. Please advise as I wanna use the tab for movies for the amazing screen. Please let me know. Thanksin advance.

A search on the parent forum for ac3 codec will give you solutions. The simple way for me was simply to uninstall MX and reinstall a previous version without the codecs removed. I tried VLC for android and it seems to play everything but prefer MX
This link will take you to a previous version that works. You cannot do any updates to MX however if you go this route.

Actually, you can get additional codec for MX Player through Play Store (Neon codec).

Could be wrong but I read that the last update to neon codec removed ac3

[APP] Vlc player Nightlies

Hi guys
You guys might be knowing that the vlc player beta on play store doesn't support tegra 2 due to lack of neon. The given link has nightly builds of vlc player, including for tegra 2 (mentioned as T2 there).
It won't detect any media on its own at first, you have to select the directories in settings.
Do give it a try.
(Works for me.)
https://code.google.com/p/vlcmediaplayer/downloads/list
I got Dice Player, it has built-in tegra2 support.
And it reproduces .mkv files as well, so I didn't feel the need to look further.
Altough VLC is the player for me when it comes to watching movies on my computer, I think im going to stick anyways to the MX Player on Android, it is pretty stable and optmized and works like a charm.

I experienced some issues with MX Player reproducing mkv files, reproduction went jerkily.
Dice Player does it flawlessly instead.
Are you guys talking about 720p .mkv's or smaller ones?

How to play MKV movies with DTS audio on Note II?

The stock movie player doesn't seem to support DTS audio. Is there another player in the market that does? Without that, I will have to re-encode my movies that has DTS audio. Thanks for any help!
try Dice Player

Thanks! I installed it and tested it with a MKV movie with DTS, and it says it cannot play it.
Mx player. Best

Haven't tried MKVs yet, but Moboplayer has never let me down yet.

I second that, MX player is one of the best players and its free plus there are many codecs that support many different types of files.

Weird Dice Player should be able to play everything. Check it's settings. I'll check when I get home tomorrow with my MKV's.

Here is a good thread, albeit from the S3 forum, on DTS audio
there is a plugin for dts on dice
it seems like none of those plugins are for the Samsung processor in the Note II? They are either for Tegra or Cortex?
i got a file mxlibs-176-neon.zip following a link above, and now dts audio is working with mx player.
Never mind I found it under accessibility.
vlc should play them also
If you only want to play the MKV files on your Note 2, I think MX player can do this, but if you want to play DTS audio,I am not sure this player can meet your demands.

MKV files

I notice that my new HTC One won't play my mkv files properly with the stock video player (plays the video but not the audio). Surprisingly, DicePlayer won't play them properly either.
However, MX Player works absolutely fine (I have it set to use S/W for the audio in Settings).
Just a heads up.

That HTC includes the Matroska media container is already a good sign, I am sure they can fix the small bug ...

Have you tried MX Player? I just looked at BS and to me it is very ugly. MX Player works perfect. Maybe BS does too, but it could not possibly be better, and to me it is ugly.
MX Player does the job for me here.

MX Player is the best. You can use HD+ for the video in Settings too.

I have used and extensively tested both. BS Player is the better one.
Few things that make BS Player stand out over the rest are:
Easily stream files from other device from your network.
Auto subtitle downloader. This particular one is amazing.
For instance you download a movie or tv show on your pc/laptop, you use BS Player to stream it and it will find the correct subtitle for that video and apply it.
Use BS Player, it is the best video player on Google Play Store.
I use BS player for me the best player..
I use Mobo Player ALOT, it's great, it plays almost everything, has some great settings, plus you can go back to your homescreens and it'll window the video for you so you can still watch whatever it is that you're viewing.
I've also been using VLC Player too, it's still in 'beta' but it's stable as hell and plays everything!
I had to use it as Mobo Player was messing up some of my anime subs.
<3 them both!
VLC
VLC media player does its best
Personally, I've found the Archos player to be leagues ahead of anything else.

Same here... Ive used MX, VLC and VPlayer.... Archos much better and also pulls in your shared network library of movies.
Defo worth trying out.
Ive had disappointing results with MX Player on the ARHD 7.0 - for some reason I cannot enable HW playback so my 720p videos stutter along in SW mode. They run fine on my Galaxy S2

Wow... Archos looks awesome... like XBMC (which is also an option for Android from xbmc.org, but not in the play store)
EDIT: Archos won't play my DTS encoded MKV without buying the codecs. Lame. EDIT: I stand corrected, I guess there is a free codec too.

TOTALLY forgot about XBMC for android!!! I'm an XBMC junkie but haven't modified my HT setup for a while. thanks for the reminder! I just installed it and it looks just like the desktop app. I'll have to do some testing fir sure. if anyone else is interested, here's the link:
http://xbmc.org/download/
Easy to maintain settings as well according to their website. It saves it in user data so updates don't wipe them out.

Unsupported audio codec??

My videos in stock player play fine, but I get this error message "unsupported audio codec" - and I have no sound.
They play ok in Galaxy Note 2, and everywhere else. Tried MX player, same thing. Video is ok but with no sound.
Any solution to this?

Your video probably comes with DTS stream that cannot be decoded. Google MX player DTS you wull find the proper codec.
If you are using Mx player you need to check off the audio codec in the settings. I would keep it that way forever.

I actually loved the stock samsung player on th gn10.1 2012. it played everything. the first vid I tried to play on this one and it won't play ac3 audio. so I've started using archos and the old bs player again.
Bsplayer got hit with ac3 problem when dolby demanded royalty fees, maybe samsung did to?
+1 for mxplayer
Speaking of players, can this thing play 4K videos?

me too, weird why Samsung changed this. One of my main reason to buy this tablet - put anything on SD card and play without converting with Hand Brake etc...

for a $600 there shouldn't be any legal issues. pay the royalty and be done with it.

I bet from a business standpoint, the amount the royalties cost per a device wouldn't have been worth it compared to the actual amount of people that would really take advantage of it. But yes, it would be cool to have had it out of the box. But I believe it works fine with MX Player from my testing, and it really wasn't that hard to get MX Player.
I had the same issue with unsupported audio codec, solved with VLC player.
I've paid. for just about every player, mobo, dice, bs.. right now my favorite is archos. it's a mix of mizuu and bs. I havent had a single video that it couldnt play yet.
Are those your recommended players to watch most content? I really want to buy one but in the past have ran into audio issues.

I like archos because it can download movie info, tv series info, and play about everything. I use he archos free codecs and everything plays fine. I've always liked archos media player from when I used to have the archos 101.
I know you can use other media players, but the point of using stock player is that it plays videos with the help of hardware, thus less battery consumption, versus if you use software decoding by other apps. Or at least It was like that on Nexus 10.
Has anyone tried to contact Samsung about this? My old galaxy 7.7has ac3 support.

the other media player can use hardware decoding if available. archos does ac3 fine with hardware decoding. i'd supposed the old bs player will to but i've not used it yet.
but it was nice having a great player that played everything built into the system.

If you download MX Player's NeoN-driver (you'll find the download link to the .zip in the settings), you can use HW+ for video and audio (DTS supported). Using this you are in audio/video heaven with the new Note 10.1. You can even play 2 full HD movies, one with MX Player and one with the built-in player (in pop-up mode) at the same time without any hickup. And if you so desire, open up an internet or file browser while you are at it - screen area allowing.
I see so much talk of lag and other supposed deficiencies here, while so far I have been in honeymoon state for 8 days solid.

AC3 & DTS Codecs

Hi Guys,
I've got some movies that have AC3 or DTS and as I understand it, these are not supported by any of the VR media players (yet?).
According to this, I need to ROOT my phone and then install a CODEC that will support these formats, at which point Gear VR (for example) will then play the audio as well.
I'm sure I can find the instructions for rooting on here but, I've been unable to find a CODEC pack that isn't specialised to a particular app. For example, this pack is aimed at MX Player.
Question is, will this CODEC work with Gear VR or, does anyone know where I can download a standalone CODEC pack?
(Gear VR arrives on Saturday so can't "just try it"... yet. I'm also not going to re-encode everything.)
Thank you!
Try mx player and download the ac3 codec somewhere on xda

Thanks, but is MX Player a VR app? If not, it will VERY quickly make me dizzy - I used VLC and this is also not a VR app so, whilst it played the audio perfectly, I *almost* instantly became dizzy as it did not track head movements.
edit:
Awesome... MAY have just stumbled across the answer!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mobile-vr/gear-vr/how-to-ac3-sound-gear-vr-t2992397
Edit 2: Nope. That doesn't work with Android 6. Back to square 1.
