[Q] Can I update my unlocked S3? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi all,
A few months ago, I unlocked (locked to t-mobile initially) a samsung galaxy s3 using odin. Before that, I had to downgrade to 4.1.2 in order to unlock it. Can I update it to it's newest OS now? My dad's s3 already has 4.4 kitkat. Although, I remember seeing a warning that after unlocking at 4.1.2, updating will brick my device... Do I believe it or what? Let me know what you guys think. By the way, I'm new to this forum.
Thanks, and please respond.

You can update it

A Few Questions regarding unlocks

hi guys i have a Rogers sgh-i317m and recently downgraded it from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 and got it to work with Wind Mobile, I now want to upgrade it to 4.3 , if doing so will it kill my unlock with Wind Moible? and if not should i use odin to upgrade it or over the air?
My Last question is in regards to a thread i saw somewhere that said you cannot downgrade your sgh-i317 to 4.1.1 once you are on 4.3 , is that true? thanks alot
Unlock is permanent and you can downgrade.
So far I have read is you can not downgrade from 4.3
You can downgrade. Make a nandroid.

update this s3

guys my friend recently bought the galaxy s3 .t999 .i think the phone is unlocked because he is using it in india . and on a different carrier. the problem is that the phone is on 4.1.2 .i dont know where to find the rom for this model, or even whether i should update this phone .i mean i dont know if the phone is unlocked for the current firmware and whether it will still be unlocked after updating in or installing a custom rom. i have attached a photo of the about screen. rooting is not a problem. i need to know whether i can install any custom rom on it without locking it . and please if i can update it try giving me a link for the firmware
If the phone is working there, it must have been unlocked. You can update the phone and the phone will stay unlocked. However, you do not want to update to the latest 4.3 release from T-mo/Samsung. Too many problems with it.
If you really want, you could root it and just flash Rooted 4.3 rom ONLY from this thread. But that does need a custom recovery.
right ^^^ don't do the OTA

Going back to 4.1.1 Stock Help!

Hi All,
I just picked up a i317m Note II - It's locked to Rogers and I need to use it with Telus (I'm in Canada). The phone is stock 4.3 Rom.
I've unlocked a few S3's/Note II's in the past using the "free method" through the service menu's, but remember at the time the phone needed to be on 4.1.1 to work. (Even the updated 4.1.2 didn't have the proper menu items)
Can I simply revert back to 4.1.1 from 4.3 without issue using Odin and the Rogers 4.1.1 Firmware from SamMobile? Will it cause any issues?
I'm new to this whole Knox thing, need to do some reading this weekend about what's changed in the past 6 months here, but for now, I need to get the phone unlocked so I can at least use it.
Any help/comments ASAP would be great.
If your simply trying to unlock the device from the hidden menu. Then your best bet would be too flash the older modem. That was released with the 4.1.1 firmware. Then that menu will show up for you to do the unlock...
Or another option is to go to http://www.sammobile.com/
to get your stock firmware...

Thanks - I was just wanting to confirm there were no issues downgrading this method from 4.3 to 4.1.1 - I've done it before but not since official 4.3 had hit.
Turns out this thread was not needed. I just bought the used Note II and was told it was locked to Rogers. I just put my Telus sim in it and all is working fine, it's already been unlocked. Strange, but good enough.

You can't downgrade after having the official 4.3 firmware/bootloader.
And that person you got it from must have unlocked it when it was on 4.1.1
That's good it's working:thumbup:

AT&T Galaxy S III unlocked

Hello,
Sorry if this was asked before but i couldnt find it in the search as its coming up with numerous returns on something else.
Anyways, I bought an AT&T s3 rooted and i was able to put it back to stock with Android 4.0.4. After i put it back to stock i got it unlocked to use on T-Mobile.
My questions are,
how do i update the software to the latest version. do i update it with AT&T software or do i use the T-Mobile software version?
If I update it again will it get locked again?
Rooting is not really an option as it is for my daughters use
thank you in advance for any replies,
V

If you update i believe it will no longer be unlocked to use on T-Mobile. However you do need to use the AT&T ROMs for it to work on your phone.
so is it best to root the phone and update it that way.

You can try updating the phone using the phone's OTA updater. It may not work if you have root.
I don't recommend updating all the way to 4.3 as it will load a 4.3 bootloader which cannot be downgraded and Knox.

[Q] Your Opinion 4.3 or 4.4.2?

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 on a buy sell group (well 2 of them, one was broken screen and one someone mangled the motherboard) I fixed up one to be good as new. It had 4.3 on it. Baseband: I747MVLUEMK5
I've rooted it, ( I know I can't downgrade it) I unlocked the sim via unlock code.
I'm Wondering if I should update it via Kies? (NF2 is available)
I use the samsung Gear 2 Neo on this phone, but I also have a Oneplus one for my main phone.
What's your Opinion of the NF2 Rom? Should I stick with 4.3 or upgrade? I'm not looking to try another mod rom, I've got a nice CM11 on my OPO.
Thanks

if youre talking about NF2 bootloader/modem (& not ROM) , i upgraded firmware from mj2 to NE4 and didnt notice any improvement. just my ยข.02.
"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"
I decided to put kies on today and it prompted for an update. I assumed it was for 4.4.2 as most other people I noticed who had a I747m had 4.4.2, but this phone had not.
Is your phone an i747 or i747m? These phones use different bootloaders that should not be cross-flashed.
its a I747m, Kies is what told me there's an update.
Since you have the i747m, do not use any modems or bootloaders for the i747 as flashing those on your phone could brick it.
I suggest running the update until you are as up-to-date as possible. Then flash Philz Touch recovery, flash supersu to disable know and obtain root, then decide if you want to run a custom ROM or stick with rooted, de-knoxed TouchWiz.
