TWRP failed to backup - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Only this morning I'm getting the error, e: unable to create folder/external SD etc etc. failed to make backup folder. Up until this time all backups have gone without any problems. The three backups I already have gone from the TWRP folder when I view it with a file manager. All my other files are there for pictures, sat Nav etc.
I am using Skydragon 4.2 with TWRP 2.8.1.0. I have tried to reinstall TWRP with flashily but the problem is still there.
What can I do to be able to get my backup working again?
Cheers

Have you try take out the external sd and put it to PC and use windows explorer to browse it ? (Assuming you PC is Windows)
I'm afraid that you may have corrupted external sdcard... try to fix it windows

Thanks for the suggestion,I'll do that as soon as I get home. All the other data is fine on there as far as I can see.
Is it just a case of letting windows scan and repair the card or do a full format of it after taking all the data from it first?

Other data is there when they are on good block.
Let windows scan and repair then after make a full format after taking all the data.

Can I do that through TWRP itself as I'm out of the house. I've copied the data I want to keep to the internal memory so far. I can see the option in memory settings to format the card, would that be good enough or must it be fine through the computer?

You could also try a different recovery like phils or clockworkmod recovery. My M8 is on skydragon's newer rom. Im useing clockworkmod recovery and it backups and restore works fine.

I never format external sdcard with TWRP .. not sure what will the Allocation Unit Size will be ... you need at least 32 kilobytes.
It's best to use PC ... scan first. If windows can fix it ... then you can try to make TWRP backup without format.
Your problem looks like external sdcard problem but maybe other thing too.
Anyway ... it's up to you. You can do it thru TWRP too.

[Q] Files on SD visible only from the phone, not from PC

Hi All,
This is my first post on XDA Dev, so I hope I am posting at the correct place. I would have liked to post on the ROM thread, but it seems that i don't have yet the permission.
I have installed the Wildfire Cracker ROM from m1ndh4x8r on my rooted Wildfire S with Custom Recovery, after partitioning the SD in three (Fat/Ext/Swap)
It seems that since then, The files created by the wildfire on the SD (Photos and more) are not visible when exploring the SD from my computer. They are however accessible from the wildfire.
Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks!
I would start by making sure the phone worked before you updated the ROM. Make sure you have the driver for the phone installed to your computer. (I'm assuming you do, as to install a custom ROM you must be rooted, which requires the driver.)
Download HTCSync from the HTC website. This helped me pull a LOT from the stock ROM and import it to the custom ROM.
Also, some ROM's have bugs. USB mounting may not work as it should in the "Cracker" ROM. If this is the case (I really don't know if it is it not), then booting into ClockworkMod recovery and enabling USB mounting in the recovery menu should work. Its kind of a pain in the butt, but it will work.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Bob,
I am talking about accessing the SD filesystem using the phone as a Disk Drive, not through HTC Sync.
Mounting the USB works fine, but only files created before the ROM update are visible... very strange.
The other way around work fine i.e. copying files from the PC to the SD and opening them in Android..
I'll have a look in the custom recovery though
It does this even with a rooted file explorer? (Root Explorer, ES File Explorer, etc..)

I've just realized that it is actually stranger than that:
When taking a picture with the phone, i can see it in the phone, on the SD.
If i plug the phone to the PC, i cannot see the new picture on the SD from the PC.
Then, and this is the funny part, if I unmount the sd from the PC and change the mode to charge only, the picture is not visible anymore from the phone, like if it had been erased...
It's like if the ROM was not physically writing on the SD, but in some kind of virtual memory, erased when the sd would be mounted on the PC...
Go market and download Wifi file transfer app, start the app, follow instructions and you are good to go,useful app for many things hope this helps
Are you using a2sd, link2sd, or data2sd?
If you aren't, I'd try a reflash of the ROM.
It sounds exactly like you say. For some reason the phone isn't writing to the SD card.

It sounds like some filesystem cache mirror IO messey mabob.
I know what I'm on about.
Backup in the cloud (dropbox or something) first.
Wipe EVERYTHING (not including SD) in recovery, go to mounts and storage -> mount usb storage, connect to pc, take your stuff (if you cant then wipe your sd), copy over a new ROM, repartition your phone but WITHOUT SWAP, format FAT32 and EXT3. Get your stuff back from your pc or cloud service.
Only an idea but it should work.

Thanks Benjamin and Bob,
I am actually using link2sd. I am going to follow your advices and reformat my SD and reinstall a ROM.

want to start over

ok i have a 6gb card and want to start totally clean.
So my plan is to titanium/or my backup everything. Nandroid and make a recovery. Move that backup to pc. Wipe data, format, make my partitions( any suggestions with 16 gb card). Move "Rom" to sd boot and restore...
Is that correct, this is what i used to do with my ogevo.
Also can i rename my backups? on my evo anytime i did that and tried a restore it hAD some issue with md5.
been trying alot of the ICS roms...You guys do awesome work. My 13 year old is trying to make his own on did og evo and now making a minecraft app...

Renaming has been hit or miss for me
Hit the thanks button if I helped you
I'm not sure about partitioning.
You can rename your clockworkmod backups but they cannot contain ANY spaces in the filename.
For some reason, I cannot copy nandroids via the usb cable to my pc because if I ever copy them back, they fail the MD5 and it's a PIA to repair them. So to resolve this I have to combine all my nandroids to external SD, pull the card and mount it in a reader on the pc. If I ever need to copy any of those back to the phone, I do the reverse (pull SD, mount on pc, copy files back over).
Also, I always format the SD on the phone, never through the pc to make sure the file system is correct for the phone.
Starting totally clean for me involves no backup of any kind. Its a longer process but worth the time if you have a rom you know you will run for a long time.
Since I wipe all my data anyway, I usually use Tulu to backup my apps and thats about it. you can partition anyway you choose, however partitioning is not neccesary at all. just create a folder on the SD named "ROM" and place any roms you want to flash in it. creating partitions would make your like a bit more difficult. but if you do I reccommend allocation at least 3-4GB for roms.

back up problem

While i making back up i got this error: "Error while making backup image of /sd-ext"
how can i solve this problem? or i can restore, but my apps on ext wont work?
(i use cm 9 aplha3 , and link2sd)
are you using cwm6? i have same problem here and looking for a way to turn back to cwm5...(and you can manually back up your sd-ext..it is located in internal storage data/sdext copy it to sd card and after restoring copy again to same place))
If you're using Link2SD/Data2SD then you must be having a separate EXT2/3/4 partition on your SD card. You can simply backup the files in that partition & put them back after reflashing.
If you have a linux system, then connect USB will show up both partitions, then you can copy them to a folder on your PC as a backup.
Its actually a good thing when you don't want a full restore too. Some things like Swype's personal dictionary can't be backed up, so after a fresh install, just copy these files on the EXT partition!

It's easy using CWM app. Run CWM, take the first option in the menu, confirm it's your device and it will reflash recovery 5.0.2.8. Before reflashing it already tells you that you've 5.0.2.8, but that's a mistake, if you reflash it downgrades your recovery and, at least in my device, the problem in sd-ext backup disappears.

i got cwm 5.0.2.8 i flashed it in rommannagger 2 days ago but i still got this error.
but, if i back up my ext partition like u said:

Yea restoring will work but some of the apps will not appear or will not work properly, those are stored in sdext..run link2sd and mount partition after you can copy your backed up sd ext folder... i also turned back to cwm 5 but it still has error with sdext i dont know why..

I think you mean Rom Manager. It's a cwm app, but when you say cwm you're usually referring to the recovery app.
Edit : Try using titanium backup, I find it works better. I use cwm just to flash stuff.

TWRP won't recognize external SD card

Right now there is no ROM installed on my phone because I just wiped my phone, but when I went to install a new ROM, it doesn't seem to recognize my external SD card. I tried 2 SD cards and neither of them work, but they work on my other phone. How can I fix this issue? I went to mount and it says "E: Unable to mount '/external_sd'.
Update twrp if available, if not try to reflash it and if it still doesn't work then try cwm

Thanks for the reply. Which method of installation would be the best? Odin? I only have access to recovery as far as I know.
Yes Odin

The latest TWRP doesn't seem to recognize my SD card either. Also both of them are saying that my device is not rooted and it asks if I want to fix root. I'm trying CWM now but it isn't finding anything either.
Edit: CWM says my device isn't rooted as well.
Edit 2: Flashed http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291679687 with Odin and when the phone boots up, it's stuck on the Samsung logo. Any thoughts?
Factory reset. Incompatible data probably causing boot hang.
This will wipe apps and data.
Thanks for the help everyone. I flashed back to stock and re-rooted. However it still won't read anything from the external SD. Does this mean the SD reader is broken?
Can you plug it into the computer? Does it see it there? If so what is the file system type? Can you format it?

Yep, the computer only sees the phone's harddrive, not the SD card. On my other phone, the SD card is working fine.
No, I mean plug the card into the computer. Not the phone. But if another device uses it ok, then you msy just need to reformat using the computer.

Reformat the card? I will try that. But I have two SD cards and neither work on my S3, and both work on my S4.
That tells me the cards are ok and something is probably wrong with the device then. If you format one card to fat32 and it still can't read it, its probably hardware.
@bjornturoque Here was my problem. Exactly like yours. I am BL unlocked, Rooted, TWRP 2.8.7. I am having a problem with the ext sd card not being read in TWRP. I have had ver 2.8.5 / 2.8.7 / 3.0.2 of TWRP and none of them will read the card. I have tried formatting the card with my Note4, GS 5, Tab S, and my PC using SD Card Formatter. Still getting the same result.
Here is what I did to fix it.
Install Xposed, Download Wanam Xposed, activate the module, open and go to security hacks and check the box for SDcard RW permission, then reboot.
I just did this to mine and it fixed my problem. Hope it works for ya.
Format SD-card via Windows (FAT32/Default Allocation).

No, doesn't work
I have a 128 GB SD with exFAT, it worked without problems in TWRP 3.0.2 recovery under CM12.1
Now I am on CM13 and beside the bluddy permission google-bug it works in the system but not anymore in TWRP 3.0.2 recovery.
I tried to fix the permissions to write to external sd (this 128 GB sd) by adding stuff to the /data/system/packages.xml file, see this post.
But I didn't change the wrong thing I am pretty sure and doubt that this is related, as TWRP comes without using this file, I guess.
I flashed 3.0.2 again with Odin, no change.
Fact is, that I installed CM13 with another SD-card, a 64 GB FAT32, not this one. Maybe it never worked under CM13. But anyway, what has TWRP to do with CM13 and its permissions? TWRP is previous to any CM system, which is not running at TWRP times.
What could that be?
I flashed now CWRM v6.0.4.7 (ClockworkMod Recovery) but the problem persists:
E: Can't mount /storage/sdcard1
Error mounting /storage/sdcard1

What is it? The sdcard is working flawlessly in the running system and another FAT32 sdcard works in TWRP. What do I miss here?
Is it that TWRP and CWM doesn't know exFAT?
I think to be quite sure that this was working, I have exFAT since a while now.
Deleted.

trouble writing to storage

I'm on the latest 4.4.2 stock rom, and everything was working fine, then I made a nandroid backup to extSD and tested flashing some mods through twrp, didn't like the result, and did a restore, and that's when the problem started
ESexplorer was working normally, but now it cannot write to internal storage, and reports a EACCESS error, other apps went crazy too : winrar will no longer write to extSD and reports it as read-only,and when trying other explorers, like Fx Explorer with root plugin, it returns the same error, but total commander works normally.
I've tried using Fix permissions from twrp, but nothing changed, and tried SDfix from google play and it said I already have the fix applied, so this is driving me crazy....could this be a problem with bad permissions ? ESexplorer shows permissions on all folders as "drw", I'm not sure if it used to be like this before.
Did you try formatting the disk through twrp? that should make it new with no problems.. though you'll lose your data unless you are able to copy them to your computer or something.

did a full format using revolution HD script then restored my files and things seems to work on internal storage, formatting the extSD on device didn't work, so I'll try to format it on pc once I get the adapter.
