Hi there !
Is there a way to do this ?
I currently use ES file sharing but he always copy the files to the host before opening it up (this kill the purpose for me, because i keep all centralized for backup).
I tried using busybox and mount manager but i cant load the modules ! (yes the tablet is rooted).
Thanks for the help.
I've used 2 apps for this
As long as you are rooted you can use either 'SambaDroid' or 'Samba Filesharing', downloadable from Play store for free, to make available both your /storage/sdcard0 (Internal) and /storage/extSdCard (External) as mount dirs.
I used both and in fact can't remember which one I found seemed faster but speed more likely pertains to the hardware and network conn. each device is using.
But what i need its exactly the opposite. I need to mount SMB shares on my server on my tablet !

Maybe XBMC/Kodi? For video, pictures and music....Does a great job of playing movies from my NAS!
Problem is, some programs (like Poweramp) cant work with streaming.
So i need to mount a smb share to make the program see it as a local folder

I have used ES File explorer to both send and receive files to and from the tablet. Maybe if you elaborated on what your need is we could better guide you to the correct software.
Thanks
DrClaw
I just want to mount a smb share on the tablet.
So the tablet see it as a local folder.

ES File explorer will do just fine. It will not let you access the share from your other apps but if you want to access a file and use an app to open it that will work. If you looking to map shares to your device your better to learn how to use a VPN first. If you map a location and don't have access to it you might get unwanted consequences. If you have a VPN setup first you will have access to these shares away from home and won't have to worry about that as long as you have a signal. VPN means Virtual Private Network. Some routers have this built in but if you want a really nice one check out PfSense. That has many options and will work by adding a second network card to an old computer. Hope this helps a little but without knowing exactly what your looking to do I couldn't think of a better answer.
DrClaw
Just did it !
Thanks to Skyhigh and UpInTheAir i manage to sucessfully mount in the 1.9 version.
Now Poweramp and all other program function normally. Did with CIFS manager
Thanks for the help guys

How do I mount network shares on my incredible. I want to watch movies off my server.
Astro
Install Astro and it's SMB module from the Market.
I want to mount it not browse to it. So I can play files like they are on a SD card, not download them and then play.
you would have to recompile a kernel with samba built in I believe
Do any of the images being worked on have it?
This would be an incredible feature. Is this working on any of the devices?
I have been searching for this as well. It'd be nice to allow Rockplayer access to my server so I can just stream my porn.

All you need is any kernel with either the cifs.ko module (CIFS = SAMBA = Common Internet File System) built as the module, or built-in/linked (like Ziggy's).
In addition, once you've done a mount -t cifs /blah blah, which is all that seeing it in any file util like root explorer shows (that it's mounted, or else you'd never see the files there), then your media/whatever player should be able to use them if the app itself is able to play files from anywhere.
So there's a few pieces to this, where anyone of them "might" be a show-stopper, but I often leave CIFS shares mounted on mine and use them directly.
i haven't found a thread about it and i'm searching for this by 2 months, i'm want some kind way to browse my internal memory by pc, if there's a way, name it please. And have another question, i already have root me play and installed Astro, IO and ES Explorer but no one haven't asked for superuser permission, cuz i want to to change the apk file from psemu native and i need this permission, if someone can help, don't hesitate, please.
adb pull is your best bet to copy internal memory to your pc to browse it.

Going into your phone via SSH should allow full access, since you have root. The app needed on your android is QuickSSHd ($1.49 btw). On your PC, download WinSCP then link them up.
Or if you want to explore the root partition from your phone, use Root Explorer ($3.99)

anyway TS, to add on your choices, try 'wifi file transfer pro' https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransferpro&feature=search_result
works like a root explorer, but this is for PC, browse or upload/download to/from your android file system..

I've personally used WinSCP on my android, so yes. Works brilliantly
Hi there!
My goal is to playback any content files from my home (local network) NAS on KindleFire tablet. Current ROM is CyanogenMod RC5.
Is there an easy way to AUTOMATICALLY mount my network share?
The only thing I've got working is manual mount with CIFS Manager. After reboot I have to open the app and activate my share. This sucks.
- which files do I need (cifs.ko ....?), found tutorials for other androids than CM, so the linked files may be incompatible
- how to install them
sorry for bad english I speak german
Thanks so far
Download es file explore, you can open cifs and save them.
Needs root.

Other apps still don't see the network files, like photo and video players. I know it is possible to mount network shares into local folders. But at boot without having to open the cifs app?
Not sure if this will help:

I found some threads explaining a procedure for google Nexus 10. You need a custom ROM + kernel with built-in CIFs module. So it is definitely possible to mount shares automatically, even with JB 4.2.2.
My problem is I have no idea if a ROM, designed for other Tablet, would run on KindleFire2.

Not sure if i was cery clear, ES file explorer will save a cids file share location including cerdentials, from thre you can open any type file your device is able to open like photos, word docs, music, etc. Its not necessary to copy the file to the device, you can open it straight from the cids file share location. Same with various cloud offerings like box.com and dropbox.

Tried to load cifs modules via mount manager, no success. Now looking for cifs enabled kernel. In the above linked thread they say cifs.ko is included in CM10 but didnt find any in my installation.
*bump*, any News?
I'm looking for mounting to a mount point like /mnt/cifs too, accesing smb through external file managers works, but i need a destination for a app (Manga Watcher Application), which uses the Basic or a own simple simple file Manager.
I tried CifsManager and Mount Manager, I can see the share and navigate through, but no luck with writing.
In System/lib/modules are some modules, but no cifs.ko,
How can i try to build cifs.ko in my kernel?
I'm using CM 10.2 latest nightly with Kernel 3.072, Android 4.3 from Hashcode.
But i have not 10 posts to ask in developement thread :< ^^
Thanks in advance,
Tim.
Can anyone point me to any kind of file server for the Ouya? CIFS would be ideal but I can handle NFS or FTP too.
I've done my research here and in other forums and am not seeing any clear answer. What I want to do is to be able to remotely copy and delete files to and from the USB key attached to my Ouya.
Why not use ssh for that ?

Okay. I see guides for rooting and installing Busybox. I'm not hugely familiar with Busybox. Does Busybox provide an SSH *server* so I can ssh into the Ouya? I *am* familiar with ssh file transfers on my other servers.
I've seen other requests for an SSH server on the Ouya but no clear answers.
Once you root ouya install something like this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=web.oss.sshsftpDaemon
Set it up and leave it running. You will be able to use any ssh client (like putty) to log into ouya and exec any command you need including copying or moving files.

Okay, I thought about that. Early on with my first Android phone I installed a similar app so I could log into my phone from my workstation and play with it. But I'd need to somehow get the APK from Google Play and then sideload it. How do you extract an APK from the store?
Edit:
Actually, searching not too hard turns up things like:
https://code.google.com/p/droidsshd/
And other sshd APK files. But they all do need access to a shell.
Found a solution.
After reading an Ouya review today, the reviewer was all gaga about using AirDroid to manage your Ouya. I had played with this class of "web desktop" apps years ago with my first Android phone. You run the app and then connect to your Android device with your browser. The app gives you a desktop that lets you manipulate your device.
Unfortunately AirDroid is a paid app and costs $1.99 a month. The free version is limited to 100MB of transfers per month which just isn't enough if you're transferring game images for your Ouya emulators.
So instead I found 3CX DroidDesktop which does what I need to do. Here it is on Google Play:
DroidDesktop on Google Play
But of course we can't use Google Play on our Ouya so here is where you can download an APK:
DroidDesktop at android-appstore
Now I thought there used to be a sideloading menu on the Ouya. I guess the last update did away with it. But fortunately the guy who did Mupen64PlusAE (one of the emulators) released FilePwn:
FilePwn on OuyaForum
Which lets you surf the Ouya file system and install packages. Install it through the normal Ouya method. Looks like it's free (as in beer free.)
DroidDesktop isn't a perfect solution. You have to specifically run it when you want to perform file management and the way the Ouya is setup an app takes over the machine and I have no idea how to switch away and do the multitasking I know Android is capable of. But it works and does *not* require rooting. I was able to surf to my USB key and copy and delete files from a Windows workstation.
Edit:
Whoops. FilePwn was *not* released by PaulsCode.com but by littleguy77. Paul just gave him a thumbs-up. My bad.

It took me a bit to figure out how to get the APK to sideload FTPDroid. I ended up using APK Extractor:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sylark.apkextractor&hl=en
on my Nexus 7 to get the file. But now after sideloading when I run FTPDroid, it drops right back to the Ouya menu. I'm having the same issue with ES File Explorer. Both are apps that are supposed to run on the Ouya just fine.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is this some issue running Google Play apps on the Ouya?

I use dropbox & copy to get files to the Ouya.
It's a little more roundabout, but i can download files at work, put them in the @ouya folder in copy, then download when i get home.
I use StockPlus Room that have CIFs support + Mount Manager (free and paid options) and conect to my Time Capsule 3T, and forget the memory limitations on OUYA.

I've used [and am using] the servers ultimate pro
but I'll keep this one as a backup
ES File Explorer
I've tried nearly all the set-ups above but the one I find most reliable uses ES File Explorer. No need for root or anything else.
Sideload ES File Explorer
Open ES File Explorer
Go to Remote Manager, under tools
Go to Settings (for remote manager)
Turn off 'Close on exit'
Set root directory as your external USB drive connected to the OUYA
Exit settings, and turn on WLAN
I then use an Filezilla to transfer all my downloaded files from my Desktop directly to the correct folder locations on the USB drive connected to the OUYA. I get really solid speeds on the transfer between the two devices.
I can then leave the OUYA in XBMC mode, while being able to transfer any downloads very quickly to the USB drive whenever I want.
Note: I found this worked best when OUYA was connected via wi-fi. Ethernet was problematic

I've tried this, but the remote manager keeps closing the connection. i've unchecked the 'close on exit' box, but it still closes after a while.
any ideas on what might be causing this?
Hi not sure if this is the section to ask but i need to ask for some help.
I have a Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 P5210 (the atom model)
I have rooted the device and installed latest bindroid kernel (v3) but can't mount my SMB share from my linux server
i receive the error.....
"MOUNT: invalid argument"
i have tried the following so far
1: turn on all prefs in cifs manager ie. load cifs module... load insmod etc
2: tried various urls \\192.168.1.1\share //192.168.1.1/share smb:\\192.168.1.1\share and vice versa
3: installed busybox(well ii think its installed correctly)
still cant get it to mount.
In ES file explorer the folders load without problem so i guess its something to do with the cifs/smb part within the android system or cifsmanager
anyone who can shed some light on this would be most appreciated for the help...
ps not sure if i have cifs.ko and if its even needed (if so do i need a cifs.ko for x86 64?)
hi,
get somebody the cifs manger working?
if yes can you help on the how-to.
many thanks

I have the same issue. 4.2.2! My best guest is the same problem as in V4.3 Google had block us! No more SMB Mount. Hopefully some body will find an answer.
But for now you can use ES Explorer and use the Lan search to get to your network SMB. I use this method to watch my movies.
