I'll start from the begining,I had my fone rooted with the peoples on it. Very happy i mite add. Anyway long story short.I had to take the nd8 update,I was 2 behind. I never thought it would turn out to be a nitemare. I was never able to get a recovery that would see the sd card. I had it rooted a time or two. but had to do a full restore in odin, the 7z odin. Anyway i have philz latest and cwm latest for my pone. I can get to philzs and i can see the zips on the sd. when I use root checker it says i'm not rooted. Since i not going to be able to use the peoples i want to go with another rom. Right now i have the stock rooted on the sd and can see it. Not sure what i need to do from here. can i flash the stock rooted or do i need to do something else so root checker verifys root.
i know it looks like Im a newbe. I have rooted several pones back to the hero. Take it easy on me i had a tough couple of daze with this pone.

so you have PhilZ latest one right? and ND8 is very simple to root just use TowelRoot or the option in PhilZ settings and you'll be rooted....and if you don't like Philz just use CWM or TWRP and flash the latest SuperSU beta zip.....and you will have a Odexed Stock Rooted rom if you would like De-odexed their is a zip to make it De-odexed + De-Knoxed (Knox apps only) or you can flash the pre-rooted stock ND8 zip....
yes i have philz. read a lot of good things about it and i like all the options.. so this one ( CWM-Superuser-3.1.3.zip ) is not the one i need to use. i flashed it right after i was able to get into philz.. my problem was it wasnt seeing my sd with twrp or cwm. kinda like there was something corrupt.. ill prolly stay with philz.. just so im clear i can flash the pre rooted nd8 with no problems and be fully rooted.. and verifed in check root... eventually i want to go with wicked, carbon, tribute or some other custom rom.. just making sure i dont have other problems that i need to address..

yes you should have no problems just make sure the MD5 matches.....it's good practice....it prevents you from flashing a bad download.... i forgot make sure you make a back up in PhilZ just in case things go bad

Hey guys. I actually don't even have this phone yet but will be getting it shortly. I definitely want to root it (I have a rooted EVO 4G and Xoom tablet) I'm a little confused though about the different methods I'm seeing.
My goal is to obtain a fully rooted phone w/ stock everything. What is the best method to do this?
ODIN this and you will get CWM, root, Ive found the LOStkernel to be a lot better than stock.

Sorry for the noob question but when I watch Qbking's video on this kernel he says you need to be rooted and have CWM installed to flash the kernel. But what you're saying is this kernel can provide root, add CWM and flash the kernel if you use Odin to do it? If so, I'm right in saying I'd want to download the TAR file rather than the ZIP? For root, would I need to flash SuperUser via CWM or is it built into the kernel?
I've been thinking about jumping into root soon to try out the Starburst ROM and I've evaluating the cleanest way to gain Root + CWM. I was thinking about using Bubby's method, but this seems solid too if my assumptions above are correct. This would be my first Android root by the way so I'm being patient and extra careful.
I just got this phone recently and rooted it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268548
thats a really good place to start. but to be honest every time you use odin and you flash a kernal in odin you'll get an annoying Yellow triangle that pops up in the beggining. So Your best bet is to flash to a kernal to gain root then flash the kernal from the unroot tutorial as if your unrooting the phone it wont remove superuser.apk automatically, and it will remove the yellow triangle, then from that point just use either cwm or the zimage flasher from adb to do it.
My recommended steps are
this one first for gaining root
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kExN-Y2pfxA
then this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySskTt-S-cM
Follow links in youtube description.
after you do that, don't use odin anymore just use cwm and that adb script for changing kernals and you'll never get that annoying triangle again.
Also be aware that everytime you flash with odin the phones bootloader records that you flashed it, meaning even if you take it back to stock if sprint wants to look at it for warranty purposes they can still see that you did something to it. which means that youll need a $2 jig to wipe that count which I don't even know where that is.
If you can use a temp root thats used for 2.3 gingerbread on other devices then use second link in youtube to avoid using odin, I kinda wished I knew before because then I would have done some more experimenting with the phone. so annoying, I have control of this device and at the same time not which really sucks!
Edit BTW: Why use the starburst rom it doesnt really look that snazy to me for me to consider jumping to it the stock one works great why not just flash a deodex stock one and flash a theme to it, theres some really sick themes in the theme section of xda check it out! XD

I had some wake lag (about 2 second delay between pressing the power button and screen turning on) with the LoStKernel, so I've been running this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284511
It's been working well for me so far. You'll have to get root access first, so try out the LoStKernel to gain root access and if you don't like it switch to this.
Ok so i decided to do the update on the tmobile samsung s3, lost root and tried to do the zedomax method.that didnt work, tired a couple other method. they didnt work either. i dont know what to do.... phone is working fine but i cant get Odin to push cwm, i keep getting failed on the cwm install. i truly read all and researched and anything else im having issue understanding. can someone make a video or help on another method that worked for them.
Follow the guide how to root without tripping flash counter over at the development thread. Once your stock and rooted. Download ROM man anger and flash recovery from there. Forget about flashing cwm through Odin . Do it this way it always works.

No. You need root first if you follow that thread I was telling you about. But the cool thing is when you use Odin following the thread I told you. After your phone reboots you will find superuser that means root. Then you can flash recover through rom manager. Just make sure to put any ROMs you want to flash on your internal SD card and not the external. When you flash a ROM you will be rooted. Custom ROMs that is.
Pm me if you need more help

I wanted to root also. Im on stock with latest update. So let me make it clear: (Im a total noob spending the whole last night to learn about rooting)
First, I do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687 .
Ok so now I have rooted stock with latest update. It will wipe my sd card, correct?
Next, I go to Google Play to download Rom Manager. then flash CWM recovery. (I want to root because I want backup)
I heard the official tmo JB is coming soon. I suppose I will not be able to update through Kies with my phone rooted, right? so what is the best way to update to JB? thanks guys

Yup you are right. Follow what you typed and your into the promise land. As of now some people are lucky enough using voodoo root keeper from market but some aren't. When they try to re root custom recovery isn't sticking. Just wait a couple days. I'm sure devs will have a full rom with latest jb patch included.

what do you mean by "custom recovery isnt sticking"? it is CWM recovery flashed to the recovery partition, isn't it? Also I'm pretty confused. after rooted, can I still do factory reset in the usual way? (go to settings/reset)
Yea some people updated the leak jb and lost root. They then tried and root again and were successful but when trying to flash cwm thru Odin, the recovery wasn't sticking so when they boot into recovery it would only be stock recovery. IF you still have root and wanna grab the jb leak wild just released jb update so go grab it and flash away.

I'm sure this has been brought up before but with 20 something internet tabs and countless youtube videos I definitely get the jist of what needs to be done in order to root the phone as I've done it a few years ago with another phone. The problem i'm having is I think I'm making this more complicated than it is. First off, I cannot find a NON rooted stock Bell rom for galaxy S III SGH-I747M all I can find are rooted ones. I'm trying to root my phone yes but what if I wanna revert back to stock with no root? I haven't found one yet. Secondly all the different roms I been finding are 555mb to 725mb in size, I just want to root my phone I don't recall half gig sized files just to do that. So then I downloaded a stock rom apperantly named stock root66_tar it's 1.5 GB!! it doesn't have anything else with it. I feel like an idiot because there's so many files and OTA and LH1 and stock rom, kernel, ect I know they all mean something I guess I'm just overwhealmed with so much info, I just want to root my Galaxy S III SGH-I747M from Bell and then if and when I choose I want to be able to unroot it and have a copy of a stock untouched unrooted rom, and then I still don't know if I need to have a stock rom to unroot.
I'm currently on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
seems straight forward as I just want a stock rom with root access no fancy CWM or rom flashing and I'm downloading the Bell rom which it says its stock just root injected...im guessing that means it's rooted but again if I need warranty repairs or need kies to update my phone when jelly bean comes out I will need to unroot the phone so kies recognizes my phone and allows me to update to 4.1 hope someone can send me in the right direction from the thread im in and can let me know about unrooting and wether or not if a rooted phone can be recognized by kies to update to jelly bean next month when it comes out as I dont wanna be stuck not able to update all because I rooted my phone and don't know how to fully reverse the process. Thank you
1st download odin from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1165122&d=1340993443
2nd download this http://www.blownco.com/smartguy/CWM-Recovery-LTE-SGS3-v5.tar.tar
3rd download this http://www.blownco.com/smartguy/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
ok so the 1st download is odin what you need to do is open that and put the 2nd download (which is clockwordmod recovery) into the pda part of odin and hit start...when its done phone will reboot. after phone is reboot you need to put the 3rd download onto your sdcard and then reboot back into recovery and flash that zip and that will put superuser on your phone which will give you root.

Thanks for the info I'm just about to read it now. seems so far from what else I been researching about that thread I linked is that a stock rom that is root injected not trippin the timer thingy means I can just unroot it by simply doing a factory reset unless I read that wrong. Since im just going for root on a stock rom with no recovery as im told I dont need it if I don't plan on flashin different roms, but I see you mention downloading it so I take it I should ? even though I don't plan on flashing other roms? I just downloaded your 3 files you linked and it was interesting that it was all about 7MB where as the other thread the file was over 600 MB lol and both are to root as well.
Yea its just good to have just incase you do decide to flash a custom rom like the team insomnia roms but there is no need to worry about flash counter since there ia an app to reset it for you

ah I see now I have another dumb question before I go to bed, what is the difference between rooting my phone using the files you supplied which is like 1 mb for the super user which gives root access as you say and flashing it using the stock rom that's 600 MB with root injection?
what are the differences between them both? would seem impractical to download a 600mb file if a 1mb file does the same thing unless I'm blind and too tired as Ive been up over 30 hours. Thanks for the replies and I will be back tomorrow to check on this thread for any additional info anyone writes.
Well the way i suggest just leaves you with the stock eom you are currently using and the whole process will prob be completed by the time you download half of the stock rooted rom......both ways work but the way i mention is just the one i use
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
If you already have a "recovery" image installed, then you don't need to worry about rooting the phone. Just flash a root injected ROM as you mentioned.
But if you don't already have a recovery image (like TWRP or Clockwork Mod) then it's easier/quicker to flash a recovery if your phone is already rooted.
Thanks for the replies, I will experiment with both methods but before I hit the button once and for all I will try to find out in the meantime what I need to unroot it with a stock rom which I did download but it says root injected which I'm guessing is just that it's a rooted stock rom so then technically it's not stock if it's root injected? and I'm trying to figure out if I do a factory reset from the root injected rom if it brings it back like it was from the factory.
PS: after more reading I found out you need a non root injected stock rom to go back to 100% factory, for the life of me I cannot find a stock rom that is NON root injected for when I want to unroot and flash back to factory for Bell Galaxy S III SGH-I747M.
I recently took the ota update to 4.1.2 mb1 and lost root. My question is can I use odin to flash [ROM|Stock Rooted] 3/3/13 Sprint Touchwiz Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (L710VPBMB1) Odex/DeOdex? And If so do I use the full ROM odex? And Do I have to flash anything besides the ROM? Or can I keep everything else stock?

Hey there buddy, welcome to XDA (I see this is your second post).
Anyways, do you still have a custom recovery? I'm assuming you don't, since it sounds like you went all the way back to stock unrooted in order o get the update (in the future, Freeza typically has the update for Root users a week or so after the OTA release, so no need to go back to stock unrooted).
Anyways, back to your current situation. Since you most-likely have the stock recovery, you'll have to go back to being rooted with either CWM or TWRP (I prefer TWRP, but they're both good). I personally use mskip's toolkit, it's fairly straightforward. You could also follow qbking77's rooting method. He does a good job explaining how to root. Samsung hasn't locked their bootloader and don't try to in their updates, so these rooting methods stand the test of time (and updates).
Once you have a custom recovery installed (or if you already have one installed), FIRST THING to do is perform a nandroid backup. THIS IS KEY. Once you have one done, go ahead and flash Freeza's Stock Rooted ROM. I'd recommend doing a clean flash, as it's the best way to minimize the chances of errors and bugs. Just wipe system and cache and dalvik cache, and then flash the downloaded ROM. And speaking of downloading, be sure to check the md5 sum of the download before you flash. Most problems with the stable ROMs here on XDA stem from bad downloads.
You can also check out other ROMs. I won't go too crazy on advertising here, but scroll through these two sub-forums, Android Development and Original Android Development. I've enjoyed most ROMs I've tried.
Hope this helps!

Ok, just out of curiousity... Before I took the OTA i was rooted 4.1.1 stock with stock recovery. Is there any way to do it the same? The method I used before was this [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter [SPR L710VPBLJ7] JB 4.1.1. It was super quick and easy.

Yeah, that same method should work. I personally like the custom recoveries, but understand your desires to leave it at stock recovery (not triggering the flash counter).
Like I mentioned before, Samsung hasn't (and most likely won't) locked their bootloaders, so any rooting method that has worked in the past should work in the future. Just make sure to read the last 3-4 pages of the thread for whatever method you're trying to use to see if there are any issues. I know an earlier version of mskip's toolkit was having issues with JB for a little bit (it's updated now).
Well I'm gonna give it a shot. Ill let you know how it turns out.

I still dont know what to do from here. How do I flash the downloaded rom because the new file I downloaded seems to be a zip and can only be flashed with CWM not ODIN. I cant place it in the right directory of my phone to do that.

I replied to your thread. I hope it works for what you need.
So I'm by no means super knowledgable with this stuff but I've rooted a few phones, played around with CM on my old evo but for the most part I enjoy rooted stock.
I have Galaxy S3 Sprint 4.3 updated OTA from a rooted (4.1.2). When I took the OTA I lost root, no big deal I used Odin and flashed the CF auto root, it said it removed knox and I had root back. Cool!
In short 4.3 sucked, wanted to downgrade back so things like TrevE mod would work again and it wouldn't be so buggy. I tried to use odin to flash "KIES_HOME_L710VPBMD4_L710SPRBMD4_1130792_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5" but it gave me the "Use Kies Recovery and error occured" message.
So I then used odin and flashed TWRP and my phone booted.
I'm back on 4.3 rooted.
I've tried picking through the forums and interwebz for answers but I get mixed messages and info on international versions and what not.
I'm tired of trying to figure it out and really could use some help downgrading back to 4.1.2
Thanks,
Brandon

The 4.3 OTA installed a locked bootloader, which will prevent you from ODIN'ing back to a previous version. you can flash any ROM you would like from recovery, you CANNOT downgrade the bootloader. As of right now, if you have knox, you are stuck with it.
You are extremely lucky that you didn't brick your phone by using odin to flash a non-4.3 tar. I wouldnt try again.
My advice is, remain rooted with a custom recovery, and find a ROM to your liking, and flash that.
I have also heard that we cannot flash custom kernels on the knox (MK3) bootloader as well, but I havent verified that.

Thank you for the response. Is CyanogenMod an option then? If I go to CM could I flash back a stock 4.3 rom in the future?
As an added bonus question does CM allow wifi tethering?
Again thank you for the response.

CM is certainly an option. In fact, its what i am running now. CM11 12-24. Runs great. You can always odin the stock mk3 tar and go back to stock unrooted, at any time.
in order to flash cm11 you MUST be on TWRP 2.6.3.1 or CWM 6.0.4.5 or newer or the assert check will fail.
not sure on the tethering, but im pretty sure it definitely works on cm10.2 and i think it does on 11 as well, but dont quote me on that.

not sure on the tethering, but im pretty sure it definitely works on cm10.2 and i think it does on 11 as well, but dont quote me on that.

Tethering is available on CM11 just like it was on 10.2; would strongly recommend latest Philz Touch Recovery over either TWRP or CWM though. Although it is based on CWM, it has proven to be pretty much the superior recovery option for flashing any Android build number, plus it is highly customizable.
Philz Touch Recovery
this is how to downgrade

I'm tired of trying to figure it out and really could use some help downgrading back to 4.1.2
Thanks,
Brandon

do a factory data reset then use odin auto root from computer ok...... after boot u will get a security message supersu will be unfortunately stopping this is ok..... then u will need to download the supersu.app to root of sd then manually install this will update it and now u can turn off knox and have root... then go to market and download odin mobile then flash your .tar file u want and you will be good to go 4.1.2 doesn't have knox and has a unlocked bootloader so have fun bro this method may work for other phones

Do you realize that this thread hasn't been used in a couple of months? I would assume the author has no more need of advice based on the inactivity. Also, once Knox is installed, it is on the phone to stay. PERIOD. NO DOWNGRADING POSSIBLE VIA ODIN. Custom ROMs of any build are fine via custom recovery, but any attempt to change the bootloader will trigger Knox and brick the phone. Dangerous info to be posting here, especially since someone else who doesn't know better might try this.
