[Q] Should I update from root?

im running a rootable firmware but mainly use it for xbmc. i recently came from an apple tv 2 with jailbreak. my AFTV is rooted and i just wanna know what i can do with it.

If you follow the tutorials posted here, on AFTVnews, you can keep your box rooted, while also being on the absolute latest firmware (using pre-rooted firmware, and an install of CWM recovery).
As for what you can do with it.... Aside from XBMC, you can load up the google play store, and have a whole ton of apps (if you care too). Or you can keep it as a dedicated XBMC box (which it does very well)...

[Q] How to revert to stock after rooting?

Hi, I rooted my firetv out of the box and managed to block firmware updates after gaining root.
My problem is I haven't had time to manually update to the latest rooted firmware nor have I setup clockwork mod. Now I'm getting errors when trying to update sling tv to the latest version to use the app.
So what I'm asking is can I simply reenable over the updates with one of the remote apps and update to the latest version and everything should be fine?
Is there any reason for my to keep root considering my use case is kodi in home streaming and sling box? Would I be missing out on anything cool?
Has amazon modified the home screen to include something silly like banner ads since the launch of the fire tv?

Install clockworkmod and bootmenu, then update latest firmware. Sling will then update .

Unroot my Samsung Tab S

I have a rooted Samsung Tab S wifi with this firmware installed T800XXU1ANFB. In order to unroot do i need to flash it with the same stock firmware it has on it. Or can i flash it with an updated stock firmware?

Just select full unroot from settings in the supersu app.

I am a newbie... so here goes.
I did root it but when I go to verify it it doesn't verify. SuperSU was put on my device, but it wants to update the binary and I did that, but it keeps failing.
What I want to do is unroot it entirely and set it back to factory settings so I went to the settings in SuperSU like said above. If it is unrooted, how would I know? SuperSU is still on my table And only able to.bto.be disabled instead of e tirely removed.
I also think it didn't work because maybe I was trying to root it with a auto file for kitkat instead of lollipop. And links to the version for this lollipop are in a few places but each time I try to extract what I've downloaded the file is corrupt and it never unzips.
I've got the galaxy tab s 10.5; 16gb; wifi only (sm-t800) running lollipop 5.0.2
I'd really like to root so I can get the bloatware off, but if it isn't possible at the moment then I'd might as well go back to an unrooted device.
I'll take all the help I can get or be directed to. I've been pulling my hair out for two days on how to figure it out.

After you have unrooted reboot and you will be unrooted. Root can be verified with Root validator.

On a second reboot I noticed I wasn't rooted. Thanks. I finally am rooted now.

I'm having a different problem but I am sure it is related to this topic.
I ended up being properly rooted after I got the correct one for lollpop 5.0.2. Then I realized that The Sims Freeplay would not work. I tried to use root cloak and I had no luck. I thend tried to use xposed, but it hasn't been upgraded to Lollipop yet.... so I thought about if rooting my device was really worth it since the only game I religiously play is The Sims Freeplay (apparently they are cracking down on people who hack their game.... which is all good and well because because it has nothing to do with my game... I have a rooted device to get rid of bloatware, not to hack the game that I play in a legit way -- but whatever)...
So I chose to unroot from SuperSU like I did once before (when I wasn't properly rooted, but SU was still on my device) just to see what would happen.
I've used Odin two more times to put back the original root file I got to work for Lollipop and now on the second reboot, SuperSU still hasn't been put on my device (like it originally had did long before I even rooted properly).
So now TWRP boots up every time I want to just go straight to my download screen and from there I click on download to get to my screen. That's when I use odin and the cf-auto.
I hope I don't sound confusing. I just want to know where can I go from here?
Apparently the Sims Freeplay is being a real PITA about people trying to play their game on a root device (doesn't surprise me with EA), but I want to play it on my device rooted or not... but now my tablet feels like it's both. It's not straight out of the store box and it's not fully rooted...
What the heck am I doing wrong now?

If you have twrp installed you don't need to flash cfautoroot again. Just reboot from within twrp and it will offer to root.

If you are having problems getting into download mode you are not doing it properly.
Hold POWER + VOL DOWN + HOME.

Under which category will it offer to root and will there be a way to get the sims freeplay working? If not I'd like to get back to straight out of the box for the tablet... but something tells me after reading for a few hours last night that thats impossible.

If you unroot with the supersu app you will be fully unrooted.
To reroot boot into twrp then reboot.

[Q] Just received a rooted fire TV... What now?

A coworker gave me a rooted (towelroot) fire TV sw version 51.1.0.1_user_510055620. After I hooked it up to my WiFi and registered it with my account there's no apps on it and it won't allow me to download Netflix. What is my next step? How do I get this thing up and running?

Do you know if CWM is installed? Im thinking the netflix available on Amazon is incompatible with your old firmware.
Basically, i youre going to want to update to one of rbox's prerooted firmware versions. Its not hard but you do need to follow the guides carefully. Best bet is to go to aftvnews. He breaks it down really well.

I'm not sure. How do I check? I also need to update the xbmc to kodi (I've started to search!)

So far I've only been able to unlock the bootloader but I can't push the recovery.img for some reason. I hope there's an easier way by now. Lol

just follow this guide up to the point of your existing software and then update to the latest custom rom by rbox.

Rooted Gen 1 FireTV - I don't really use Root, am I missing anything updating to 5.0?

So I rooted my 1st Gen FireTV as soon as I got it, and I think I'm on the very first Firmware. I had blocked OTA updates and as far as I know have never updated. that being said, I don't think I've ever done much that actually used the Root functionality. The only thing I really do is use Kodi 15.1 annnnndddd thats it.
I do own an Amazon Echo, and saw that Alexa is now part of the new FTV update. Not sure if I can link them together and just boss my FTV around via the Echo or not, but I like the idea of more / updated functionality from my FireTV
Soooo thoughts? Am I missing anything great by updating and giving up Root? I have seen that I could update with pre-rooted firmware but then I would have to install CRM / Recovery, then do incrimental upgrades after installing a Bootmenu, etc. That seems like a lot of stuff I need in place and a lot of points of failure or bricking for something I'm not sure I even need =/
If so, what would you suggest is the easiest way to re-enable OTA updates? I was going to ADB and use pm enable com.amazon.dcp Thanks for any advice, by the way, I'm pretty new at this.

Well, like many things, the answer is up to you.
If you have no need for root then you have no need to for root.
I like, many others, prefer the option of having root, recovery and unlocked bootloaders.
If you don't use anything Amazon and only use it for Kodi then root will give you the ability to freeze the FireTV Launcher have Kodi set as Home.
Installing recovery and a updated pre-rooted ROM isn't too difficult and you've done the 'hard' part by having root already.
Update wise, unless you want to be running the latest versions then yes you'll have to on top of it otherwise you can just update to the current version and be done with it.
You can check back every now and then to see what the additional updates from Amazon fix or what features it adds and decide then if you want to update.
