Hello,
Last night I rooted my device using this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265429) method and file from zedomax and everything worked great except when I booted my device there was a yellow triangle with a black “!” in it. I figured that just indicated the device was rooted or running a 3rd party kernel so I didn’t worry about it.
Today I launched my camera app and it failed to load the interface but showed the image from the camera momentary then crashed back to the home screen. I restarted my device and when the device restarted it was very slow and unresponsive and after unlocking it my live wallpaper was gone replaced with the last background I used before selecting a live background a couple weeks back. No icons or widgets loaded and I am unable to open the settings tray. The only things I am able to do with the phone is pull down the notification bar, respond to text messages, adjust the volume and hold power to restart the phone. All of which are very slow and delayed.
When I connect the device to my computer windows is no longer able to load the drivers and Kies is unable to connect with the device. I am not sure what caused this or how to resolve this issue so any advice or known fixes would be fantastic! I am unable to get to clockwork mod to restore my backup and I am unable to get to Kies or the phone settings to do a factory reset so I really don’t know what to do they were supposed to be a last resort and now I don’t even think I can do them. I am an experienced techie but I am new to android and this is the first device I have rooted so any advice would be great no matter how basic it may be.
UPDATE: I just connected the phone via USB to my laptop at work and it was able to discover and install everything it needed to connect with the phone. I am installing Kies now so at least there is hope of a factory restore, although I really hope it doesn't come to that!
Boot into download mode and flash the stock eg30 tar file from crawrj.

You can root again and restore your backup, or go to this website www.lostandtired.com (midnight roms blog) click on android development and download and flash the sprint bloat and TW restore zip. Hope that helps.
I flashed the stock rom which didn't change anything so then I used clockworkMod to do a factory reset which ended up trapping me into a boot loop. I could use Odin to flash new roms but the device would never go past the 4G logo
I ended up taking the device back to Best Buy and since the loading screen showed the stock rom and they couldn't get past the 4G logo I just had to say it wasn't rooted and they gave me a new one.
I would love to know if anyone has any idea of what went wrong here so that I can feel comfortable rooting again. Also if anyone has some basic articles handy that teach basics of rooting that would be great, I didn't even know about clockwork mod until after I had this problem so knowing things like that earlier would have helped a lot I think. I'll be spending the weekend looking up everything I can find on the subject so any reading you guys can suggest would be fantastic.

If you a clockwork and "stock rom" you were still rooted...Doing a factory reset will send you into bootloop when rooted. Trying to flash other roms on a bootloop is not going to work. You need to have grabbed a backup such as Zedo has on his post and put the backup in clockwork folder on your phone. Then flash that in CWM. Would of brought you out of bootloop to a stock rom with his kernal. Now you can flash Roms and kernals or could of flashed crawf or anyone else FULL stock rom and been back to stock kernel and rom and not rooted.

Ohhhh that's what happened! Awesome thanks. I will be much better prepared with backups out the wazoo this time haha.
Now if only I could figure out why Touchwiz died in the first place hmmm....
I hope you can figure it out, just postin here to say that when I saw this thread, it reminded me of the thread over in the EVO forums about the guy who claimed that sprint removed his Sense from his phone.

haha SPRINT removed it?! So that person thinks sprint monitors every device and has a team of techies on staff to hack your phone and brick it if you break their rules?... yeah that totally makes more sense than a file got corrupted when you were messing with the kernel.. some people maybe shouldn't be rooting their devices in the first place haha
I bought two new SG3's yesterday for my sons, and immediately commenced to root one of them via the "Easy Root" method in a how-to here (ODIN recovery, flash root.zip, rooted). I encountered all kinds of issues where no recovery (CWM, TWRP, or even a stock recovery image) would mount anything. I finally read here on XDA where the stock root that comes with the Toolkit works, so I tried that and now I'm back to stock recovery but, of course, an non-rooted phone. I didn't try to do any of this on the second phone after encountering so many issues. I assumed that something may have changed with this latest update and that this root method may not work anymore.
Anyway....

It's been a long time since I've dealt with custom recoveries, but I believe that's just the normal background for it. It's like you're tinkering with the inner working of an Android (wiping cache, etc), so you've opened up the green robot.
That's what I recall from when I still had stock about 9 months ago...
If it shows up like that, that means you have the stock recovery...use GooManager or Rom Manager to install a custom recovery while booted up.

Hmmm...any other time I've been in a stock recovery, I remember the Android being standing with that spinning wireframe in front of him. that's what displays when I successfully wipe the cache. Maybe I'm just remembering wrong and I'm being paranoid since I'm still deep in issues with being able to install a working custom recovery.
Hey, I'd love to install a custom recovery via GooManager or ROM Manager, but none of the custom recoveries are working on my SG3's. Nothing will mount so I'm stuck with stock recovery until someone more knowledgeable than me figures outwhat Sprint and/or Samsung did with the latest SG3's.

I don't know why you're having these problems but the newest update (md4) roots exactly like any other software on the s3... I and many have done it plenty of times, it roots exactly the same way... Not sure why your recovery won't mount anything but somebody else also had this problem just today... You could always try to Odin in an earlier build (lj7 maybe) and try to root from there

I think something changed on the newest batch of S3's. I'm sure the OTA S3's are still rootable with this method but for some reason the brand new ones aren't. I've found at least a dozen other people complaining about the same thing only with brand new S3's.
Unfortunately I had a limited window of time to root these two phones and get them set up before going on vacation, so the phones are in use now and there's no way to backup and restore the existing configuration, data, etc.without like a day of downtime and basically starting over. And even then it's not a sure thing that reverting to an older stock ROM will work. I'll just wait for someone to figure it out and then root the phones later.
But there's definitely something new going on here. Its happening to too many people now. At least my sanity is confirmed!

When you decide to root again here is a prerooted Odin build for mc3, after successfully flashing via Odin you will be rooted and can flash up to md4 from there... There is a prerooted that wipes everything and one that wipes and restores, make sure you read carefully and flash the one you need http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=207

That build will do it all.. It is prerooted, includes the custom recovery... Just like flashing a custom rom with recovery except you do it with Odin

Hmmm...but I wonder if that will end up with a working recovery or if I'll be in the same boat I am now, but with an older stock ROM?
I'm just really hesitant to try anything until someone figures out what Sprint/Samsung did with this latest batch of S3's. It's probably something relatively simple to overcome, but I'm not mobile tech enough to even guess what that is. I can't really end up with sons' new phones bricked (even soft bricked).

You may be waiting a long time then since most devs either already have the phone or have already moved to other phones... Unless a Dev happens to pick one up with the same problems you're probably S.o.l... And I'm 95%sure they didn't change anything, some phones just have issues on certain builds, there have been plenty of people the last month and even the last week reporting successfully rooting with the same method you used...
You really have nothing to lose, if it doesnt work you can just Odin full stock and be in the exact same place you are now

True. I always forget the Odin option for when recovery fails. But I'd be without the data and current configuration (basically starting from scratch).
In the last two days I've seen posts from over a dozen people now who are encountering this issue with brand new Sprint S3's. I'm kinda hoping more and more people encounter this problem increasing the chances of it being resolved... Haha
It doesn't matter once your rooted and booted all you do us download either rom Manager or goo manager and install the custom recovery of your choice from the running phone. Doesn't get any easier.

Until the custom recovery can't mount anything, which is the problem I'm having now. I've tried numerous versions of CWM and TWRP and none of them can mount anything on these phones so they're useless. I'm not sure how reverting back to an older stock ROM will change that...?

Because you yourself feel the bootloader is the issue. If you Odin the stock tar of a previous version then that loads a previous bootloader. Pretty simple huh? I rooted 2 S3 last week brand new and did not have a single issue both where on the latest md4 right out of the box. I don't understand how you and that other person both ran into the same issue on the same day. It's really weird and like everyone else said and I just experienced just a week ago thousands of people have rooted on the latest version on brand new devices. Unless you guys are getting refurbs which by accident the bootloader has been locked.

Flashing back to an older stock rom doesn't work either. I flashed to a 4.1.1 stock rom and followed the method for CF-Root and The Easiest Way to Root and neither of them allowed a custom recovery to mount anything.

Thank you for trying that as I couldn't because I'm on vacation with the two phones in use. Well that sucks that it didn't work. I'm a retired career network engineer, so I'm not a non-tech, but I'm also not the most tech person with regard to mobile phones. Even so, I can't figure this one out so it's probably not something obvious. Also, on XDA and other forums I'm up to about 18 different people who have now encountered this on very new Sprint S3's.

Did you purchase your phones from Sprint directly? I purchased mine through Wirefly. Thinking I may send it back for exchange and pray like heck I get one that works. I am definitely a Vanilla Android person. Touchwiz is not my cup o tea.
Enjoy your vacation, as much as you can. Us tech nerds can never get it off the mind when something isn't working. Lol

I purchased two s3 phones from Amazon about a month ago and haven't had any issues. Both are rooted too. The root process is pretty simple. Have you tried the unified toolkit also? Another easy method.

The problem isn't really root. Depending on the method, we can get root. It's the custom recovery that's the problem -- it can't mount anything so you can't flash anything, backup, wipe, etc via recovery.
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot or if I broke some forum rule, I have never posted here but I have read a ton, thanks for all the help you guys have posted by the way.
First off I am not by any means an expert on computers and rooting but I have a decent understanding of the basics and can easily follow online instructions to root. I obviously have a d2att, I recently rooted it. I was happy with it unrooted for nearly a year but when samsung released the 4.3 update my phone really started sucking. Eventually I decided to root just to get a rom that functions better. I have been running gummy rom kit kat, I think its the nightly from march 10th, I have had no real issues other than some random reboots here and there. My mom begged me to root her d2att because she also was tired of the buggy samsung 4.3 update. I eventually rooted hers, even though I really didn't want to, knowing that I would get calls about every little issue and I would have to run and fix it... anyway
She has had issues that I have not had, she says that her phone randomly turns to silent periodically and causes her to miss calls, and she also says her bluetooth is intermittent. I don't use blue tooth at all so I wouldn't know but I have not had an issue with randomly going to silent. I have tried a lot of custom roms over the past 2 months since I rooted, including CM11, CM10 (all of them), AOKP, slimroms, of course Gummy, and a variety of others. All of them have had some major bug that is unbearable, from not connecting to wifi or not sending and receiving MMS, except for gummy which I have only had the random reboots.
Okay, so when I rooted mine originally I made a nandroid copy of the original rom after I rooted it, I didn't realize but somehow this nandroid file created to my internal memory instead of my sd card, so when I loaded a custom rom it was deleted. Like I said I'm far from an expert and that was a huge mistake. So anyway when I rooted my moms (same phone) I made a nandroid of her stock rom after the root and saved it to my computer, tablet, flash drive, external hd... etc.
Now that she is having problems with the absolute best ROM that I have found functionality wise, I thought I would restore her stock rom and debloat it, try my best to get it running better. I used her nandroid back up and restored my phone to it, only to get a ton of errors, everything was force closing. I kept getting the popups that "unfortunately ... has stopped" they were nonstop. Literally all I could do was hit ok and try to do the same with the next window, finally I get rid of those and the phone wouldn't run any apps or make any calls etc. So I rebooted to recovery and went restored my nandroid that I made earlier that day and all is fine with my phone again.
So here is my questions. First off when I made the nandroid of her stock rom I renamed the file STOCKROM, that way I would def know what it is and to not delete it. Will renaming a nandroid file make it not work correctly?
Also would a nandroid back up of her phone simply not work correctly on mine? I thought it would but it def does not. Maybe there is saved data that doesn't match my sim card.. I have no clue.
If I used this nandroid on her phone do you think it will work corretly?
If I messed up the file be renaming it, does anyone have a backup for stock that I can possibly use?
Last but not least, any recommendations for custom roms for d2att? I really just want speed, and no bugs

I've never had to use a nandroid and definitely have not tried one on a phone different from where it was made, but from reading in the past I don't believe that renaming it is causing the problem. I believe it is probably due to either trying it on a different phone or the file structure may have been changed when you moved it to the pc. Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in regarding the nandroid on your phone. If it is still on her phone I think it may work.

Thanks for the tips. I know its still on her phone and the name hasnt been altered. I wanted ti try a debloated touch wiz for her. I havr liked Gummy but loaded a carbon jelly beam tonight. So far so good. Any suggestions for custom ROMs for attd2? I have had a time finding one bthats useful. I'm glad I have my gummy on nandroid. When I finish screwing around for her that's where I'll head back to I'm sure. Unless I find a sweet bug free ROM through a reccomendation. I'll check the link in the AM thanks for the reply.

You MUST have the UCUEMJB or UCUEMJ2 bootloader and the UCUEMJB modem installed before proceeding or this ROM will not work properly. Your data and wifi may be broken if you do not do this first. These are available here: Bootloader and Modem Options

Quick question. I have only rooted and flashed cm toms and aokp. I haven't done anything specifically to change my boatloadsoor kernel. I really don't have the knowledge absolute that. The first step says what's listed above. What does this mean? Can you help? Thanks for the time and tips.
Hey guy, just wanted to ask a few question, and here's a little back story to help with any suggestions. I was on CM11 on mobilicity when i decided to change to wind, and so as instructed, i performed a nandroid backup in cwm, and then odin'd back to stock with root66 with the 4.3 mobilicity update. Then used the unlock code i had and unlocked the phone, and then made the switch to Wind. Now, here's where i have a few questions. Could i just install the CWM touch recovery via terminal emulator, and then restore my nandroid from my ext sdcard backup, hopefully with out issues?
One request I have is, I'd like to try out a different rom to see how they match up to CM11, was thinking of trying the pacman rom as i've read it's been restructured and such, or perhaps you guys would like suggest another rom i should try? I'm mainly looking for one that's butter smooth, with quite some cool/good features and handles the phone signal/data great (CM11 has always seemed to, for me atleast, not like handling my data connections so well, as they always seemed low, or would take very long to reconnect to it if signal is lost).
So this brings me to the second question, is there a special method from changing from one ROM to another with latest updates for the roms, with out having to redownload all of the apps and such over again? Or would it just be better to have a factory cleaned start with each rom change? Thanks for any help and apologies for the long post, just want to be sure i do things right and not mess up, haha.
So i bought a FreedomPop LG G3 on sale and i ended up activating it to FreedomPop and i rooted it, and im wondering if i can install Marshmallow or cygn on it, my concern is.. before i bought the LG G3 i had a first Gen MOTO G from TextNow with there own unique ROM and when i installed lollipop on it, since the phone has no sim card the phone lost connection to TextNow and was basically useless outside the house so i had to ask TextNow to send me their unique Rom which they did and after installing it everything came back to normal.
now my lg g3 has a sim card slot, and came with sprint apps on it and showing sprint on lockscreen and everything. calls can be made from the android call app but texts messages are only available through FreedomPop text app.
i asked FreedomPop to unlock my phone and they said no problem doing it for me but i ended up not doing it since i do want to stay with them but then i want a different ROM.
so my questions are:
1.is there a way to backup an stock rom that came with the device so i can restore it just like i did on my TextNow incase i lose connection like before?
2.is there a way to backup FreedomPop like apps and restore it after changing the rom? will they work after installing them?
3.should i install a different rom?
4.anyone had an experience with such "locked" phones or even FreedomPop phone and can tell me how did it work for him?

If it has sprint apps it is probably an ls990; check in "about phone" settings to make sure. So basically follow the ls990 thread(s) to see how to get recovery on it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3 . Since you have root already installing a recovery should be a simple process via flashify or autorec apps - but you need to absolutely make sure you install the correct recovery file with the bump exploit or you may softbrick and have to restore with a PC. (bump is an lg g3 exploit needed for our device as we don't have a true bootloader unlock)
Re #1: if/when you put TWRP recovery on your phone you can make a backup of your freedompop stock ROM so you can restore it if you need to.
Re #2: since you're rooted you can backup all of your apps and their data with titanium or something similar. I use titanium pro because it allows you to make a zip file you can flash in TWRP while flashing your ROM, gapps, etc. & it restores your app data too; super convenient time saver. As far as will the freedompop apps work on a different ROM - they should; trying to restore them and see if they work might be the best way to go there. As long as you have a ROM backup you can restore - why not give em a try?
Re #3: that's subjective and up to you. Some people prefer stock features(especially the camera) and some xposed mods to get some extra tweaks, some people prefer custom ROMs with tons of features and the newest Android version. Again, that's on you to decide. BTW, if you do go custom ROM there are decent camera ports available that come close to stock quality.
Re #4: I have not, but I'm guessing you may need to take note of your APN settings before you change ROMs as they may be unique to freedompop & could mess up your data/text if they are not set right. That seems to be the biggest issue with people using different carriers.

Q#1. the thread you posted is for unlocking the phone? what benefits do i get from it? will i lose the 4G LTE speed like it says on the thread if i do it?
Q#2.i dont care much about camera features and also not looking for a lot of tweaks all i look for is to keep my ram and cpu power low and there for available at all time so basically having the phone act and react as fast as possible. can i achieve that with one of the different roms or having stock marshmallow installed?

Hey...sorry I missed the notification that you responded...my bad.
Recovery - TWRP recovery which allows you to backup your current ROM, wipe your device, and install ROMs. You have to have it installed if you want to run any custom ROMs. It is imperative that you use the correct file or you may bork all your software, softbrick, and re-flash on a PC. If you are unsure on how to install TWRP then read, read & ask questions in the appropriate forums - & watch youtube videos if you need guidance on how to install it.
The link I posted was for your device. You can search in the threads for anything from ROMs, TWRP, root, kernels, and troubleshooting if you get stuck.
Stock marshmallow is pretty quick & there are some pure AOSP or basic CM builds available that may suit your needs...just have to sample for yourself to see what's best.
APN settings: settings, cellular networks, access point names; if you see a feedompop apn(or anything that isn't sprint) write down the fields, or take a screenshot and email it to yourself for reference.
Having TWRP recovery saves you from your mistakes. Once you get it installed you can make backups that you can always restore if you experiment with new ROMs or tweaks, etc. It is the backbone of flashing and modifying your phone.

So i went with liquid smooth rom and after having some issues with titanium backup restoring apps i tried a few things and ended up having all system apps crashing on boot (dialer etc...) so i restored back to stock rom and everything works fine but now when i wanted to go back to liquid smooth TWRP says i cant and that the install files might be incomplete, actually it says that way about gapps too.. why is that? also having the problems i just mentioned with the rom, does that mean the rom is not stable.. or it is something i did? should i even try going back to that rom? i mean i kind of liked it in the 2 hours i got to test it before everything crashed. i went throught the link you sent me and eventually figured out that there is a rom section on top of the page where i can actually see the roms which i didnt realize that before, seems like restoring function on TWRP works great but i wish there was a way to just know which rom would work best for my phone in terms of performance which is what im looking for.

ended up having all system apps crashing on boot
My guess is maybe you included system apps in your titanium backup? They are the ones listed in red; you don't want to include any system apps in your app restore/update.zip because they may be incompatible with the ROM you are flashing. So unless you read in the liquid smooth thread of other users having issues, I would doubt the ROM itself caused things to crash.
As far as the TWRP error about incomplete files...I'm not quite sure what that means. But you can take a screenshot while in TWRP(vol down + power) and post it up here to better explain the issue.
If you want to try liquid again try a fresh download of the ROM and fresh download of gapps(make sure you're downloading the correct gapps - LP & MM use different ones). If you run into problems with crashes again, try and flash just the ROM by itself to help determine if the errors are caused by the ROM or the gapps you're using.
I like liquid smooth...used to use it on my galaxy nexus back in the day. There are lots of good ones out there, itjust depends what you like. I usually use Tesla(aosp), but aokp and turbo are both really nice too. If you prefer CM based ROMs there are a ton of them too. Pick your poison.
So to clarify: it sounds like you did everything right - except don't restore system apps with titanium, make sure your gapps are compatible with your ROM, and have fun flashing
