Hi all,
I have jumped on the Amazon Fire Phone. I'm already a prime member, using an old LG P930 with Cyanogenmod, but as you can imagine the hardware is a bit old. For $100.00 (since I'm already a prime member the extra year of Prime would have been purchased anyways) this phone was a no brainier for me. My question is, what launcher are you guys running? The Nova launcher works well, but gives an error when installing widgets. Trebuchet fails to launch unfortunately. So far my favorite launcher is Cheetah Launcher by CC Launcher. Everything works, it's clean, and allows the use of my widgets. (Pandora and 1 weather is a must for me). Swiping up to go back works just fine. The only thing I don't like is you don't get notifications of emails or messages in the dock. Also, the default AOS status bar seems a bit weak. It notifies you and the notification goes away. I have been seeing something, wanting to grab it later, and then forget. :|
Anyone else got any launcher or good apps that go well with them to make it more user friendly? I'm very impressed what a simple launcher and side loading apps will give you with this device with out downgrading it or rooting it.

I've tried nova launcher and Doodol launcher. They both seem to work with the exception of wallpapers
Anyone have any idea of what needs done to get wallpapers working?
On 3.5.0 wallpapers only work with root (xposed tweak)
Yahoo Aviate works well with sll of their built in wallpapers (no widgets work, and you can't select a picture from your gallery though)
Buzz Launcher works with wallpaper support (including your own images). No widgets work though.
I tried a bunch of launchers today and those two are the best so far
So annoying that widgets didn't work on Nova, which has always been our preference, so I set up GEL on wife's new phone. So far she's ok with it, except for being confused how to get out of the Google Now panel (she thought it was an app and was trying to swipe up to get "back" not realizing it was just the left most panel of the launcher).
One thing I did try to set up also that isn't working is Pie Control. It worked for a little bit when first loaded, but subsequent attempts to activate it haven't been successful. I suspect the swipe-in capabilities are hi-jacked by the Fire OS.
Another annoyance is the inability to make direct-dial shortcuts.
I installed, or attempted to install the GNL and wasn't successful. I'll give it a go again. I think I remember the install took, but it wouldn't open the launcher. Still, if looking around, check out that Cheetah Launcher. It just doesn't give notifications in the dock.
Speaking of notifications, does anyone know of a good notification bar? The stock bar on this phone doesn't show an icon that there is a pending kik message, voicemail, text, etc.

So I installed the Google Now Launcher .apk again. It then stated I needed google search. Downloaded that .apk. It told me to clear my launcher defaults, I did, but Google Now Launcher isn't an option in the launcher selection. Any idea?
Never mind. I restarted the phone and is good to go. I seem to like the Cheetah Launcher much better so far!
I use Vire Launcher. Its built in wallpapers work perfectly and all widgets work and can be resized. It also has some cool effects.
tried vire launcher and dodol launcher. neither launcher seems to update my missed call count or text messages count properly. ie always showing missed calls.
anybody having this issue as well, or know of a fix?

I've installed a few launchers, okay - a lot of launchers. Below are the ones that I found that give the count of SMS, missed calls, etc.
- Nine Launcher (not a huge fan)
- C Launcher Lite (not bad - not very customizable)
- Solo Launcher (pretty slick - but outside widget support doesn't work)
I'm currently on the hunt for a good status bar or notifier.
The Google Now Launcher seems to work very well without any lag. Its very light weight although not very customizable. So far it seems to be a good place to start until other launchers become more compatible. I added the dashclock widget to the homescreen, with better weather addon, plus the other alerts I need and this seems a complete setup right now that matches my Nexus 4 setup.

Thanks, but this is only working at the home screen, not in the apps menu.
Is it working for you in Apps menu as well? Let me know i have tried 100 times, and soon as i try to drag 1 icon it takes me to the home screen,.

I don't think you can make folders on the apps menu. I don't seem to be able to on my Nexus 4 with its stock launcher, so its no surprise you cant do it in the Google launcher we are loading.
Thanks for this question though. I thought the launcher was limited to 3 pages but I found that you can create more empty pages by long pressing the home screen and moving the existing side pages to one side of the home page, then dragging icons to the side that now has no page to create a new page. I tried simply dragging icons earlier but it would not form a new page until I moved the old page first. Strange process but it works.
Fire Phone Lauchers - Wallpaper and Widgets
Hi All -
I've gone through just about every launcher I can find to find one that both wallpaper and Widgets work on... With no luck.
Buzz Launcher has wallpaper working, a number of launchers have widgets working, but none with both...
Has anyone else had any luck with both? Do we know what makes one or the other not work? Would rolling back to older versions of some of these launchers (pre-lollipop and kitkat) work?
Thoughts? Help? Suggestions?
Thanks!!!
Has anyone tried Action Launcher Pro? I wonder if it gets along with Fire Phone (no root).
I've tried at least 20 different launchers today. The only one that has wallpaper and widgets working is still Vire Launcher.

over at rootzwiki i just learned that ICS can go into tablet mode, so i did switch and i find it perfectly usable. some apps are even more useful than before like settings, mail, etc.
my only gripe right now is the launcher, it wastes space. i use nova with a 7x7 grid but in portrait mode its too small and in landscape mode i'd like to have more icons in the app-drawer.
does anyone know which launcher will do better? also, is it possible to get back stock launcher2? im on aokp b27 and it had trebuchet (which crashes) and nova.
thanks!
ps. for those who don't know it yet, try it out:
0. make a nandroid. should your launcher crash you are screwed
1. get latest aokp
2. change dpi to 190 in rom control
3. add hide-navbar option in powermenu
4. press powerbutton and hide navbar
5. reboot
trouble-shooting:
market trouble can be resolved by following the steps indicated in the AOKP dpi changer. i still had to manually delete its cache and data plus force close it until it finally shut up and let me download.
phone.apk will likely crash. it can be fixed be exchanging it with the one from AOKP's droid incredible build: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4168356/Phone.apk.html
i used adb, can also be done via root-browser i guess

ADW Launcher Ex works fine...
looks like what i needed, thanks!!! will now download and try
btw, i had problems using the phone app, it crashed. i read pushing the Phone.apk from aokp droid incredible build into /system/app works. and it did. now it runs perfectly, no fc's, no crashes. i uploaded it here in case anyone needs it: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4168356/Phone.apk.html
Yea I was going to say, ADW is my choice for my 10" Tablet.
My Setup:
Hide Dock Bar
Hide Status Bar (top part with App Drawer and redundant menu icon)
Hide Desktop Icon Text
Create a Drawer Icon coupled with whatever desktop icons.
Crank up the desktop Row/Column
This gives you a pretty large work area that is edge to edge. I don't use the dock bar but rather hide it and place my own icons. This removes the restriction of a 5 icon dock.
However I've never done this on my Nexus so I don't know how small the icons would be.
Hiding the statusbar is tricky because it doesn't work via the options checkbox. You have to create a gesture to hide/show statusbar. Go to the desktop and perform the gesture to hide it. Then go back into settings and delete the gesture. Now you'll gain access to the top bar.
With the Status bar gone, you access ADW Settings via the App Drawer like other ICS launchers.
why hiding the navbar? it's only initially since tablet mode brings its own, and i really like it so far. i find it more useful than the one in stock ICS even.
i installed adw and sadly i really don't like it so far. it feels like gingerbread and i hate having to theme ICS when im on ICS. but function-wise i got tiny icons in portrait mode and they seem to behave kinda strange. for now i got nova back, wastes space but i find it optically more appealing.
what i search would be a launcher that can stretch icons. i'd like it to behave just as before, if i use a 4x4 grid it would be cool if it could use the entire screen and not just a tiny fraction. nova comes close using a 7x7 grid but 49 tiny icons look kind of cluttered - not really nice for a homescreen.
btw, look how youtube reacted to tablet mode, never used a tablet or owned one, so my jaw pretty much dropped when i saw it running.
APEX launcher does the job. uses 100% screenspace and icons are big enough.
Also, check out Go launcher Ex. Make the icons larger in the settings menu. I manual set them to 80 and they look great. I also remove the top bar in the launchers setting menu. Set the screen to 6x6 and it looks perfect. Of course running an ICS theme but I don't mind a theme when I am actually on ICS. it is when you are on GB running an ICS theme that makes it feel cheesy!
I wish we could run the density in 160 but it seems like no phone.apk will run in that density. While running in 190 you need to use a modded market but it still seems like the market causes issues with certain apps while trying to download them. 160 would be native so we wouldn't need a modded market.
i still know it from my gf's phone, but must say i never liked it much. i guess im pretty happy now with apex in tablet mode, looks almost stock without the dpi changes, as it should. if i had the 5-button dock back and the notification-curtain (don't like they way they implemented that for tablets, it sucks) yeah it would be perfection but that can't be done unless the rom gets rewritten. im using it now daily, can live with small kinks and the new gapps/settings more than make up for it - would never ever want to revert to old mail/youtube/contacts/callendar, etc.
btw, are there rom's out there making dedicated use of it? i guess could care less about the newest tweak that gives me 5 minutes more battery power. but something that transforms the entire UI/IX into something more useful...

That launder does not work with the densities that we can use. It does work at 160 in portrait but not landscape.
Wish someone implemented this as a stable and full functioning ROM..
Worked well with AOKP until it went into airplane mode and never got out. I then rebooted and my cellular data was gone all together. Guess it really thought it was a tablet.

Yeah, data seems to be a little weird. I downloaded a file then it just stopped and wouldn't connect again and I couldn't make a call either. It was still showing full bars and 4G though. A reboot fixes it. I was running Franco's kernel so thought maybe it had something to do with that so I am back on stock kernel and going to see how it behaves. I so don't want to give this up. It it pure awesomenes!

thats terrible, i better make a nandroid before i try it. a custom rom would be great though, im getting really tired fixing this up.
the thing is, i really dislike the new tablet notification center, and the launcher. i wish it would behave just like before, if it could perhaps be tricked into ignoring the fake dpi. and i reaalllyy miss the notification curtain and the dock-bar. i tried hours to find some replacement for the old dock, the only thing that came close was desktop visualizr from the market, it creates resizable launcherbuttons with or without label and let's you set icons/images.
i love the new apps and settings, but the homescreen looks kinda long and dorky.

guys, i modded apexlauncher with apktool. made some changes in dalvik code to trick it into getting back the old dpi and brought back the dock through changes in the res files. icons are back to normal size aswell. it craps its pants though when it goes to landscape and the appdrawer shows only half of the screen, definitively needs more work. if someone could help with this i'd really appreciate it.

I would post this in the ROM thread but since this is my first post I can't, but I'm using the LiquidSmooth 4.0.4 Rom and was wondering if there was any way to keep the stock look without changing anything but add more pages to my home screens.
Thanks,
Matt
download "nova launcher or apex launcher"
So installing those launchers won't affect the way my home screens look or make my phone look less "stock"? I like how clean the ROM I currently have looks and want to keep everything the same more or less, just add more pages.

Both Nova and Apex are based off the stock launcher, and so don't change the look/feel of your phone greatly, but also both have plenty of customisation options so that you can make your home screen march to the beat of your tune.
I've got Nova Prime with one homescreen, dock turned off, additional page in the app drawer for most used apps (as well as hiding apps that I don't use), and have swipe gestures to open the drawer/access other features.
Apex and Nova have free versions in the Play Store that you can try, and if you don't like them, just un-install. The beauty of Android.
P.S. Some of the customisations I've made are only available in the paid version of Nova.
Nova launcher is just the stock launcher with enhancements, one being the ability to add more home screens. Highly recommended.
delete home pages
hi i'm marley, i know that this is the wrong thread but, i couldn't find any solution to my "problem", well i just did a pre-order on the nexus 7 because i'm switching from my iPhone, and unlikely iOS we don't have the home page, just the menu instead, and all i wanted to know is if it's possible to disable all the pages in the jelly bean, leaving the home screen alone, by that i mean disable like from the code, so nobody can turn them on again.
I upgraded my Note to the Note II. On the homescreen of my Note I, I can place 5 icons in a row on the homescreen.
Now, with the Note II, I can only place 4 icons in a row on the homescreen, and the dock has 5!
Is somewhere an option, so I can place 5 icons in a row on the homescreen too?
None that I found, TW launcher doesn't even have settings AFAIK. If you want more, get either a modded TW (maybe SGS3 forums) or a completely different one.

One of the nicest things about Android that gets taken for granted is the ability to customize your user interface. While most folks tend to stick to app icons for launching their apps, Tagy offers an alternative approach: a tag cloud. Tagy is actually a set of widgets that let you specify a list of apps, contacts, or bookmarks to appear in a single widget. Then, as you use the widget, the items you use more often will get bigger.

This can be remedied by simply downloading and using a different launcher.
Android allows the user to completely change the UI by using different launchers.
There are many launcher apps available in the market, but 'Go Launcher' is my personal favorite.
Just download 'Go Launcher' and install it. Once you run it and set it as default, you can change the grid size to anything you want (10x10 max). It even allows you to get rid of the dock, (which I really like), since I have no use for the dock icons on screens other than the home screen.
For instance, I currently have a 4.3" phone with no dock row and a grid size of 8x5 icons and no icon labels. Works very well for me.
One side effect is that you won't be able to use any apps or widgets that need the TW framework to run. I have never used a TW ROM so I don't know any more specifics.
In any case, if you don't like the new launcher, you can change it back to the default TW by going into 'Apps' settings; select the current launcher app and click on 'Clear Defaults'. Press the 'Home' key and this will prompt the system to ask you to choose a launcher. Simply choose your default TW and go back to your original screen. You can do this unlimited number of times without any problems. This will allow you to try out different launchers available in the Play Store.
Good Luck!
i'm using Nova launcher, and have it set as 7 down by 6 across... 5 custom dock buttons for ease of access at the bottom finish it off for me
basically the same setup as i had on the Note really lol

hi, i was just wondering if its possible to make google now my home screen. i realized i don't need a launcher because i have a ton of apps and instead of swiping through my drawer i often find myself just typing in the app in the search bar. With the new swype keyboard in 4.2 its much quicker to launch an app that way, i also put my dock apps in my lmt launcher and don't use widgets except for the search bar of course. so has anyone figured out how to make google now their HS? i would love for it to just open when i press home and open right after unlocking the lockscreen.
No launcher = no Android
Closest you could manage would be a single launcher page with a clock widget that looks like Google now plus some minor themeing.
Lets tweak your idea and make it a widget for Now, that would be pretty sweet.

With a custom launcher i think you can. For example i'm using nova launcher, and under the gesture and behavior menu you can choose the home button behavior with several action and all you app. The only thing i'm not sure about is if you can set only an app or even an app's activity (like is gnow)...
I originally posted this in reply to the HD Widgets post but thought it should have its own thread under Nova Launcher:
I can confirm Nova Prime and HD Widgets work on my rooted AFTV with Rbox's mods. Was using Fired TV until I read the posts about HD Widgets. No comparison. Now have an App Drawer, a Dock if I want it, and the ability to Drag icons around to reorder. Can't change wallpaper. Icons are resizable, can be dragged mid-grid and number Rows and Columns is adjustable. Icons and Labels can be edited. Haven't got around to trying Gestures and other features like Folders.
I installed Nova through Google Play. Don't know if can be installed from the Amazon Appstore.

Some screenshots would be good once you have it setup close to an ideal setup... Maybe you can use the Amazon FireTV Utility App to take them. Also I am guessing you have the Google Store & all the dependencies installed for it to work correctly...
Some one told me of another Launcher that works & should be very good for the FireTV but have only installed it on a FireTV Stick but haven't had time to set it up. I have just made sure it boots.

Setting a wallpaper through quickpic or other such app does nothing either. I'm content with a black background though, considering all the advantages.

1. Is there a shortlink to go back into the FTV Original UI ?
2. Have you setup LLama or some other prog like it to auto boot into Nova Launcher at bootup ?

Good ?... I am guessing you can change back to the FireTV UI to get it work.
1. Is there a shortlink to go back into the FTV Original UI ?
Yes. See screen shots. Top left icon. Called "Home" in apps. "Home" key does it too.
2. Have you setup LLama or some other prog like it to auto boot into Nova Launcher at bootup ?
No. Rbox Mods do this. I boot into
3. Do you expand the storage. You seem to have ton of apps installed. Wonder how your storage space doing ?
Everything works so not worried so far.
4. Do you have the Settings.apk installed ?
Yes.
Wonder what APK might need to be installed to get the wallpapers working..
i don't have a clue but don't care that much.

Do for me. just have to use "Home" app which loads the original AFTV launcher. "Home" key goes back to Nova.
I use nova on my phone and really like it. My only concern is the fact it's made for touch. Does the aftv stock remote control everything here? (Minus customizations of course) Aftv remote is all I have. Wukong app works pretty well but would rather be able to just use the regular remote.

Once setup you can move around with the Arrow keys and use the Select, Exit, and Home buttons. To configure it, you really need a "mouse" That can be a USB mouse, a trackpad, or a phone app. My go to device is a Logitech K400 keyboard:

I ave also used DroidMote on my phone. You need the client and server:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videomap.droidmoteclient
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videomap.droidmoteserver
For day-to-day use I use my Logitech Harmony ONE remote along with Flirc that feeds IR commands via USB to the AFTV.
If you have money to blow, get a Harmony Ultimate Home:

I thought about it but in my opinion, Harmony setup is hard, and I did not want to go through the pain when my ONE works fine provided you use a Flirc which is also a pain..

Thanks. I'm gonna try to set it up tomorrow. I have a mouse and keyboard but only use it for certain apps once in a great while and cwm. By all accounts the harmony is awesome but I'd rather put money elsewhere for now. I might pickup a melee f10 pro.
Some people think aftv has a smooth simple GUI, but I think its a mess! Especially the way prime movies and TV are thrown in everywhere. Llama's not a must but there are WAY too many clicks occurring to get to xbmc. That dev deserves great praise. But nova might be a much better option overall. Thanks again!

I have it working well too. I've tried everything I can think of to get wallpaper working. It's a no-go. It seems Amazon must've completely removed that
functionality from the FTV. No launcher has it working.

you are wrong about the wallpapers not working. I tried over 100 launchers and some of them do have wallpapers that work by default. Nobody probably took time to try any launchers besides the popular launchers so they assumed if the wallpaper did not work on them that they would not work on any launcher, but they do on more than 10 launchers that I know of. I am not gonna do all the work for anyone, but I will share three launchers that the wallpaper works on, squarehd launcher, chameleon launcher and honeycomb launcher. all the lanchers that the wallpaper work on seem to be old launchers, and as I said over 10 launchers I have found work, but most all of them were made by the same developer and are the same just have a different name, so basically there are really around six launchers that the wallpapers work on. if we can find someone that can figure out what the three launchers above share in common then we can probably find out why the other launchers wallpapers do not work. I have not ried, but I am also thinking that old versions of some of the more popular launchers may work as well, but I do not have any old apk files to try.
Forgot to mention in my last post that Buzz Launcher also works. Wallpapers are displayed by default. Also, the latest update works and it is updated frequently. You might have a problem getting past the first screen, cause you have to activate the launcher with a two finger swipe, but you do not really need to swipe, just take your mouse cursor to the top of the screen and click once and its the same as a two finger swipe.

I was referring to the use of the native android wallpaper function, not that no launcher has the ability to project a wallpaper on the FTV. Yes, there are quite a few launchers that have built-in wallpaper functionality, such as Firedtv, the only FTV specific launcher available. Of the ones you mentioned, I'm only familiar with Chameleon and from what I recall, it used it's own wallpaper system.

Hi, I played a little around with the Buzz Launcher and it looks like a very decent launcher with a lot options and themes. I like it so far, however I can't make any of the widgets to work. Any advice on how to make them work? I tried "HD Widgets" and Play Store Widgets. Also, any suggestion on how to get rid of the annoying "Two-finger Swipe Down" Notification? It keeps coming back after closing an app or when the launcher starts.
