Hi all... hoping someone can help extract me from my self-imposed hole!
Yesterday, I bought a brand new SM-T800 (16GB, wi-fi only).
I flashed Chainfire's Autoroot, which worked just fine (using Odin).
I then installed (from the Play Store) TWRP Manager.
Attempting to use that to flash CWM Recovery, I was advised by TWRP Manager that I had to upgrade to some specific version of Busybox (whose name I don't recall). So, I did that.
Then, I was able to proceed with flashing CWM Recovery.
Now, I'll confess, it's been about 2.5-3 years since I last did any of this rooting/flashing stuff, so I AM a bit rusty! Last device I rooted/flashed was an original Galaxy Note (that should put it in perspective for ya!).
So, I had/have downloaded CM-11 for the T800.
The only way I could work out to flash the ROM was to use Odin once again.
And here's where I may have started digging my hole.
I checked all three boxes for clean data, clean system and clean dalvik cache (I THINK the second one was 'system'... correct me if it was called something else?).
The tablet promptly rebooted, and flashed CM-11 beautifully.
And it starts up.
And it's all wonderful.
Except.... I don't have Gapps, which means I can't set up my Google account, or get to the Play Store! And I can't seem to work out how to get into CWM Recovery from the tablet's recovery mode.
I power on, holding the home button, the volume down button and the power button simultaneously.
I get the warning screen which tells me to hold volume down to reboot the device, or volume up to enter recovery mode.
If I press volume up, I get a screen which shows me the following text in the top left corner:
Odin mode
Product name: SM-T800
Current binary: Custom
System status: Custom
Knox warranty void: 1
AP SWREV: A1
That last line MIGHT be 'RP', not 'AP'. My eyes are struggling to make out the letter shape correctly!
Also, I'm not particularly worried about the Knox value. I roll the dice, I live with the consequences.
The middle of the screen shows Andy, with the words "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!"
So, is anyone able to advise me on how to get Gapps installed, please?
I googled for a version of Gapps in .tar format, thinking that if I could find that, maybe I'd be able to flash Gapps using Odin, but to this point, no luck.
Is there some other way?
I have a couple of different versions of the Gapps package, both in .zip format, and both copied to the SD card ready for when I do find a way forward.
Thanks in advance!!
To install gapps, search in google for gapps 4.4.4 in which that is the correct one for cm11. Download and flash the zip, its like flashing a rom but just flashes the google apps package. You dont flash gapps with odin and only with twrp. I just flashed on gapps 10 minutes ago. Also since you have cm11 you should also flash the latest supersu zip as supersu manages root perms on apps in my opinion. Hope this helps!
To exit download mode, press and hold power, home, vol down buttons for almost a minute and it should reboot. To acess recover do power, home, volup buttons to enter recovery.
Problem is, I no longer have TWRP, as that was all removed when I did the 'clean system', 'clean dalvik cache' etc.
So, now I don't have TWRP, and can't re-install it without Play Store.
Can't get to Play Store without Gapps package installed.
Can't install Gapps package without TWRP.
It's the chicken and egg scenario all over again!

All you needed to do was do the factory reset option in twrp. Well.. Theres another way to install twrp without google playstore. Make sure you ticked the box in unknown sources in settings, security. Then download this twrp apk. http://www34.zippyshare.com/v/13028337/file.html. its another way to install apks and sorry about the ads, zippyshare sucks. Just download that and install and install the recovery. Hope this helps!
Hang on a god-damned cotton-pickin' minute.... I just realised that TWRP IS still installed!
So, TWRP launches, I give it SU permission, select 'launch', point it to the gapps package .zip file, and the system reboots.
From the menu, I select 'install zip file', but the system doesn't seem to want to show me the contents of the sd card, only the contents of the internal memory.
And from what I can see, the CM file manager won't allow me to copy the .zip file to the internal memory (not sure why).
Mmmm.... the hunt continues....
Download gapps to internel storage. You probaly forgot to do the sdcard patch in twrp.

Woohoo!
Thanks for that. Downloaded new gapps directly to downloads folder, and was then able to flash from there.
Schweeeet!
Sorry, one more question.
I've got almost everything working now. It just seems that google calendars aren't being recognised. The google calendar app runs ok, but tells me that there are no calendars selected. However, there are no calendars in the list, yet on my phone, and at my desktop, I can see all my google calendars. I've even installed a third party calendar app, but it is also telling me that there are no google calendars.
Seems like it must be a device-specific issue.
Any thoughts?
Interestingly, if I go Settings/Accounts/Google/<my account>, I see all the types of data than can be synced (books, music, contacts, etc), but I don't see 'calendars' in that list.
Shouldn't it be there?
Sorry I dont know about this as I only use the google play store and google keep
OK, fair enough.
Thanks for your help! :good:
Google calendar is available as a stand alone app, so go to play store and uninstall and install calendar app again.
For future reference, I find it much easier to install twrp by flashing with Odin using the same procedure that you did to root. Just Google twrp sm-t800 or whatever your model is, download the file and flash with Odin. I don't trust apps that try to do this kind of stuff from within the os.

+1 on the notion of not trusting an app to properly/safely install a custom recovery from w/in the OS. Sometimes you'll get lucky and it works - but it's rather unpleasant when it doesn't work.
Yes Using odin to flash TWRP is much easier tried using the playstore app to flash twrp from their official app but gives me trouble...

Had a twrp bootloop. Twrp never booted because it was trying to flash this file everytime i turned my tablet on. So I had to cfautoroot to revert to stock recovery and fix the twrp bootloop issues. Odin kept crashing on large files lol.

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to install a custom ROM. I have rooted and installed Super User, and have flashed the TWRP Recovery ROM v2.4.1.0 I still have the stock kernel and haven't mucked around in the permissions besides installing SuperUser SU app from Google Play store. Right now, I have managed to wipe out my entire internal storage. I have everything backed up on the google server, so I'm not too worried, but I have no OS right now. Regardless, I have tried many times with many different custom ROMs, and everytime I get a Status 7 error and a failed ROM flash. I have been trying for weeks to find out what I'm doing wrong, but can't seem to find anything that works. Can anyone please help me out with a step by step guide to install a custom rom? Heck, even to re-install my stock ROM would be better than nothing at this point. The last guide I tried to follow was Cyanogenmod 10.1. The file was called Liquid Smooth.
I currently have the ROM file and the gapps pakage on my external SD card, but, everytime I try to install it I get that Status 7 error.
Thanks in advance.

make sure you have the correct ROM and gapps (compatible with your model). then i would try a different recovery.
you could download this flashable clockworkmod recovery zip and place it on your external sd card: http://d-h.st/8qP
it's not a touch version. you'll have to use the vol up and vol down buttons to navigate and the power button the select.
in twrp, mount external sd and then flash the CWM recovery like you would a rom. reboot into recovery.
make sure the external sd is still mounted and flash ROM & gapps twice. reboot

if you can get into download mode, i'd try restoring via odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625&highlight=stock+firmware
1. Extract contents of the zip/rar archives
2. Wipe data-factory reset/cache/dalvik-cache
3. Plug phone into PC
4. Place the phone in Download Mode (vol dwn + home + power). Press volume up when prompted
5. Open Odin and ensure the COM box is highlighted, detecting your device
6. Uncheck the Auto Reboot option
7. In the PDA box, select the .tar.md5 file you downloaded
8. Flash the file by hitting Start
9. Once you get a Success message, pull the battery and then replace. Immediately go into recovery (vol up + home + power. release power button at Galaxy S3 logo and/or vibrate).
10. Select Wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache. Reboot
you can then do some research and decide what files/procedures you want to try if you wish to root again and flash custom firmware
Thanks for the help guys. I am attempting to restore my phone right now. Will let you know how it went.
OK! Up and running! And I have it rooted with the latest TWRP recovery image installed. Now I just need to find a good custom ROM. Thanks againg guys!
So im pretty new to this but here is what im trying to do. I just got an asus nexus 7 2013 and i want to install it in the dash of my car. I plan to use a usb dac (dragonfly) and i want to be able to hook a hard drive up to it for media storage. So far ive rooted and backed up the tablet using the wugfresh NRT, and i want to try out this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2389022 because it has usb charging and it can charge the device at the same time. But i have no idea how to install something like this and i couldnt find anything after i searched. Thanx.
That link isn't taking me anywhere...
Basically you just download the .zip file, copy it to your internal memory/sdcard (which is /sdcard), boot into your custom recovery, I would recommend wiping /cache and Dalvik (but some people say you don't have to), then selecting "Install" then browsing your /sdcard to find the zip, then Install...Reboot.
Alrite so i have no idea what you just told me too do, i tried to boot it up by holding the VOL down and power buttons. I went to custom recovery, but from there, i cant understand what commands im supposed to give the tablet that would enable it to bootup on the new rom. but i figured out that i can install a custom recovery with my wugfresh nexus root tool kit. But my problem is when i try to select the rom file that i want to use, It wont show an actual img file. When i go to the page to download the rom, all i get is an automatic download for a zip file. The NRT wont flash the zip file, and when i extract it, theres no image for the NRT to target. So how do i get this rom to be an IMG file or is there another way to do this. thanx.
You flash zips from the custom recovery on the phone. You flash imgs from fastboot on the computer.
If you have a custom recovery installed, you don't need a computer at all to flash a kernel (or a ROM). Just the custom recovery on your phone. Select the kernel zip and install it.
Oh boy. You sure you have a custom recovery?
My advice.
Install GooManager from Play Store.
Open and click on the three dots.
Install OpenRecovery Script.
Click the option for Reboot Recovery.
Install.
Navigate to the zip file.
Swipe to install.
You may want to wipe or whatever but up to you.
I mean this is the basis for everything and you don't know. I'd suggest doing more research before blasting away on the tablet and asking these types of questions. This is all very basic.
Good luck.

i went with goo.im and installed the elemental IX kernel. the only thing wierd that happened was that it wouldnt let me install it if i checked the verify zip box, so i just didnt verify it. everything else looks like it worked fine. thanx.
Yesterday I decided to finally update OTA to 4.4.4 - I was on 4.4.2. It downloaded ok, then I tap install , it starts, then reboots, appears the Android green robot and a line that starts working then TWRP shuts the process and appears showing their options. Result, I restart my phone, and the OTA update says "Update failed"
Why is happening this? I wouldn't wan't to uninstall TWRP bu I think is the only solution? Or going back to CWM.
I Use Phliz files to install recovery but for ZL he only offers both recovery options, I cannot find a new link/post on how install CMW ONLY on ZL.
Any help? ALso I have no idea how to uninstall the recovery, but I will look into that.
Thanks in advance for any help

If you are using XZDualRecovery, it actually offers not two, but THREE options: regular CWM, Philz Touch CWM, and TWRP. It sounds from your post that TWRP is set as a default (primary) recovery on your phone, which is what gets launched when you "reboot to recovery". I believe what you need to do is to use NDR Utils to select either CWM or Philz as your primary recovery, so TWRP should not be getting in the way anymore (but you don't need to uninstall it, and it's still available if you want to use it). NDR Utils gets installed together with XZDualRecovery, but you can also get it from Play Store.

Thanks. Because of the TWRP interference, I had to update using Sony companion. Lost root, but got it back. Recovery is gone, so I will use the one you recommend and use NDR Utils (never cared about that app, didn't know what it could do!! thanks!!).

Hello,
About two years ago with the help of this page I was able to ROOT and load a Cyanogenmod ROM on my former Motorola Xoom Tablet. I don't remember how I did it. I just remembered it worked.
I now have a Samsung Galaxy Tab pro 8.4 (SM-T320). Samsung said on its ROM related pages that Android 5 was coming for the SM-T320 in Q3 or Q4 of 2015. Well I am tired of waiting. So I remembered this page and here I am. I do see that a new (non-nightly build) of Lollipop will soon be available. My present Tablet has Android 4.4.2. So you can see why having Android 6 would be nice. My SM-T320 has never been rooted.
I have hunted this page and few others and I have found various threads on how to load a Cyanogenmod ROM. But, they all offer various paths and steps and are not the same. My hope is that some more experienced user can point me to a guide or video that is written like 'How to do XXX for dummies.' Thank you in advance for your help.
6 is Marshmallow not Lollipop. Everything else should be scattered around the forum (especially the CM13 thread) for you to see.

Though no official word (outside a UK Twitter Feed), was ever given. It would seem that the Qualcomm Tab Pro's:
8.4
SM-T320 (Wi-Fi)
SM-T321 (3G)
SM-T325 (LTE)
10.2
SM-T520 (Wi-Fi)
SM-T521 (3G)
SM-T525 (LTE)
Will never be updated past its stock 4.4.2 (KitKat) ROM.
Rooting these Devices is simple enough with Towelroot. But, if you go 'round messing with Custom ROMs, and are Recoveries. Your gonna tripnthe Knox Flag, meaning that you'll never be able to use, or access such Data you might have had there from that Device ever again.
That said it's a fair comp that you probably could care less. But, just note that the Knox Flag will trip if you go though with it, and that you’ll be greeted by such warnings when you cold boot then Device. To the effect of "Kernel is not SELinux enforcing".

There are always going to be slightly different ways to skin a cat. With some differences depending on your personal preferences.
In general, you need to:
1) Root by towelroot or CF Auto-root
2) Install custom recovery. That can be TWRP or CM recovery (or even CWM, but I don't think our device is officially supported). Custom recovery can be installed by Odin, or by app (such as TWRP Manager or Flashify)
3) Put the ROM on the phone (whether you download to the device, or transfer it using a computer) either on internal storage or removable SD card
4) Boot into custom recovery, full wipe (data, Dalvik and cache) then flash the ROM
5) Reboot and drink beer, because you are now on Marshmallow
A more detailed guide is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-pro-12-10-8/general/qa-how-to-root-install-custom-recovery-t3087451
Personally, I rooted using CF Auto-Root by process similar to that described in the guide. But I then installed TWRP by Odin as described here (with TWRP downloads): https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxytabpro8.4exynoswifi.html
Rooted and used TWRP app to load TWRP
Hello,
I successfully rooted my Samsung Galaxy Tab PRo 8.4 WIFI. I downloaded the TWP app from the Google Playstore. I downloaded the latest TWRP image. Tablet reboots and the TWRP version 3.0.0-2 loads.
However, GEE where did this APP put the recovery image? I cannot find it. I can't seem to find it on the SD card or Internal storage. Where might this app have put it? If I don't know where it is then how can I install it? YES I did look in the Download folder on the SD card. It is not there. It isn't in the download folder on the internal storage. So, Tablet on boots into recovery mode.
Any help or insight will be appreciated.

I don't really get what you want to know, but recovery is a separate partition on the device you can't access normally. After flashing a recovery it gets written into that partition for permanent access. You won't find the recovery image anywhere on your storage.

Try booting into recovery, and see if it boots into TWRP: hold power button until the phone reboots. Once the screen goes dark, and before the Samsung logo screen comes up, hold the vol up (you may have followed a similar process to boot into Download mode and use Odin - except vol down).

"Factory reset" is a bit of a misnomer, all it does is wipe the user data partition. I don't think it will help in this case. Flashing TWRP by Odin should not have put you in a "no boot into OS" condition, and I don't know why that would have happened. But if you can get into TWRP, you can flash a ROM (put the ROM zip on the phone by adb push or copy to removable SD card) and get the phone back up and running.

Thanks. I got through it all. It's been a while since I've rooted this tablet. My Linux laptop and Virtualbox eventually played nice. Also, apparently any old cord doesn't work. I had to use the original Samsung USB cable for Download Mode to work.

This link is not for our tablets but is the same process. Just make sure you find the correct TWRP version for the T800. Once you have TWRP installed find Supersu and copy it to your tablet's SD card. Use TWRP to install Supersu. http://www.cyanogenmods.org/forums/topic/install-twrp-recovery-samsung-android-using-odin/
Sent from my SM-T800 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I'm also on MM 6.0.1 having just bought this device. I'd like to install this rom:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/development/rom-android-6-marshmallow-tab-s-10-5-lte-t3219759
So how do I go about it please? Do I need to unlock the bootloader?
:edit: Followed the guide and got TWRP installed. Downloaded the Gapps (very slow download), SuperSu zip and Nougat rom from here. Did a wipe of dalvik, cache, data and system. Sorted. Only problem is I bought the tablet for reading comics and for some reason my comic reading apps can't "see" the cbr files on the micro SD.
So I have tried re downloading Odin and Twrp and flashing it. It passes Everytime. But when I boot to recovery with power home and vol up. It goes to Android recovery. Any tips solutions you could help me with? Thanks very much in advance
After flashing twrp in odin did you reboot to recovery ? Pretty sure u need to reboot to recovery to get it to "stick",
Otherwise I believe your tab will change it back to origanal recovery

I had the same problem and I solved it by chance by finding a post online. It seems that after you flash TWRP with Odin it is indeed properly installed but you can't access it because when you boot into recovery it boots into Samsung's recovery. To get to TWRP you need to do the following:
1. Power off your Galaxy Tab S 10.5. Wait 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
2. Press and hold the three buttons Power + Home + Volume down together until you see warning screen.
3. Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.
4. Reboot again pressing POWER + HOME +VOL DOWN but as soon as the screen goes blank immediately change to VOL UP whilst still holding the other buttons and wait.
5. Voila TWRP!
I hope it worked for you as it did for me.
