Just curious what everyone uses and why. I have been using spmc since my first fire tv simply because I noticed a glitch in genesis when I have autoplay turned on it will split the screen into six sections sometimes randomly and I have to reboot. This is really my only reason for not using the standard xbmc gotham I don't really see any advantages or disadvantages other than that.

XBMC Gotham 13.2 with Amber skin.
I use Amber since I need to have Netflix on the main menu and I like how it can send Movies directly to files (but in library mode.)
I personally have tried lots of nightlies and have stayed at SPMC 13.3.2 version. One below the latest of spmc. Spmc is a variant of xbmc and is made by the devs of xbmc. it has the firetv's power options built in. I like spmc 13.3.2 is because it can play all files well including .ts and also works with elmero's firetv confluence ++ skin well.
The only next version that plays files well is the helix but then helix lacks the confluence ++ skin from elmero. The version of the skin available now for helix has spacing issues with the tiles and the power options are missing. Besides for me helix does not have anything over and above what I have with spmc.
The only one issue I see with spmc 13.3.2 is that it crashes on startup occasionally, but that is not a big issue as I can start it up again with the xbmc icon which has replaced ikono.tv through the lama options on adbfire.

Do you use a custom skin with Kodi?
I'm running Helix RC-1 currently and using Aeon Nox 4 (modified for Helix).
unrooted uk box.
Sbmc latest version
confluence custom skin, it is functional, but is easy on remote time...
I don't load xbmc to doddle, I load it for a few items or "slink" back to Prime for music.
SPMC 13.3.2, the only version that works with Live TV (HD channels, TvHeadend backend, no transcoding).

I am using spmc 13.3.3 running some live tv channels. Using simple pvr is 13.3.2 better for this? Sometimes channels don't work for me.

I've tried all flavors, only 13.3.2 runs smooth. Be sure to JUST enable "mediacodec". All HD channels run smooth now.

Are you using actual cable for your pvr or just links online.

I'm using TVMC with Aeon Nox skin
It works actually faster and smoother than Gotham/Kodi/XBMC Ouya or SPMC...at least on my fire tv. + it has all addons set up for you

SPMC fails to load
Hello, I have downloaded the latest version from http://spmc.semperpax.com/ and installed but it fails to load. I see a black screen for a while and then goes back to menu. Probably I'm doing something wrong? just got but firetv and still learning some stuff. Thanks

spmc is an app. ikono.tv is the sacrificial app with the icon changed. I boot to AFTV and use lama profiles to boot spmc on startup. firetv rooted latest with rbox. I like to have the aftv menu vs direct xbmc

Actually, I regret loading Mucky Ducks Wizard cause it took forever to load. But seems to be good now after I uninstalled half of the add-ons.

Hi all.
I've played with XBMC a little in the past but nothing too in depth. When I saw the Fire TV come out I ordered day one. My main goal is to completely replace all my Windows Media Center machines and switch to XBMC + Fire TV for each location in my house. The reason for this change is I believe that it will be easier to add-on a few features i've been missing with my WMC setup.
So far ive loaded XBMC and configured it. I repurposed a WMC to be my TV/DVR server in the basement using PVR.WMC. I found a few tricks and this is now functioning as my whole house DVR.
My main issues that need addressing are as follows:
Add "Fire TV" apps to XBMC main menu (Amazon Prime movies, Netflix, and Pandora)
Remote Music Channels from the PVR menu in PVC.WMC
BluRay playback
I have all my DVDs/BRs stored in ISO format on a NAS in my basement. DVDs are fine. BR is a challenge. Am I better off converting to MKV? Does anyone know a way to make a library that is also shared with PLEX?

It is possible to add android apps to the xbmc menu if you are using Gotham. I tried doing it and as soon as I went to android application xbmc 13 final just crashes to the fire TV main menu.

im having the same issue. it would be a perfect box for me iff i can load the streaming services that are built in (netflix, amazon prime, hulu, pandora) from XBMC.
personally i can skip the entire Fire TV menu and live in XBMC if i can load the very nice a pretty customized fire tv apps from XBMC. kinda like using XBMC as a launcher

Wonder if it's just a problem with the final version. I am running a older version and I am able to load android apps just fine.

I will have to check when I go home it's like a week or 2 old. I can launch all the apps except for Amazon Prime.
I have installed XBMC and SPMC in my AFTV and I have been playing with both, I really don't find a lot of differences, only that SPMC is a little bit tweaked to autoboot and maybe other changes that I haven't noticed.
I believe that SPMC is more optimized to work more estable on our Fire TV than XBMC am I right or wrong?,
Any other benefits to use XBMC instead of SPMC in our device?

I recently switched from XBMC to SPMC to fix a fast forwarding bug as well as a sleeping bug. Haven't noticed any difference other than those two annoyances are fixed. Plus I installed it from the play store so I can auto update in that manner now rather than manually pushing it.

I have installed the 12.4 spmc dated april 11th 2014 version first outlined in the xbmc firetv wiki which was for the ouya. If you go to system and system info, it reads 90-100 fps where future versions of spmc and all versions of xbmc are at about 30fps with the same 1920x1080 resolution. Not sure if there is a real world difference but just something I noticed.

Does the modified keyboard.xml file fix the fast forward bug. Details for it are in wiki. I used first keyboard file with good results.

I scanned through the wiki but I'm not sure what you are referring to. Is using one of elmerohueso's XBMC Tweaks for FTV keyboard.xml files.
The problem I was having is that I could not skip forward in videos. It would try and jump forward but then resume playing at the same spot. The counter would also not work correctly. Then if I tried to skip backwards it would always go to the same spot. Kind of hard to explain.

to fix the skip bug, simply disable mediacodec in the video acceleration menu, then fully reboot the box. It is caused by a bug in the mediacodec implementation on firetv. Leave stagefright enabled.
In the latest version of the kodi alpahas, mediacodec appears to be working fine on the firetv.

I have SPMC 13.3.2 working perfectly on AFTV...not sure what your problems are. Addons get updated and everything else works. Koyig is one of the original contributors to XBMC for Android/Ouya...been using SPMC for more than a year now.

I too switched to spmc last night. Kodi wouldn't play .ts files properly. Would stutter after a while. SPMC does that well and has the suspend benefits. So far no real issues noticed.

I just tried disabling mediacodec and it seems that the skip bug has gone too. Is mediacodec important? I don't see any difference. At the moment, SPMC is really the most stable platform I've seen. It can play .ts all the mkv's I have properly. Unless I find a content that does not work, I'll stick on. no need to fix what is not broken.

I get 5.1 but i do a passthrough. without passthrough to the bose, I get 2.0 even on gotham/helix with the firetv.

SPMC is working for me with zero issues regarding 5.1 surround and updating of addons. Oh, and it truly does feel like Gotham as that is essentially what SPMC is with the added fixes by an official XBMC/Android developer named @Koying.

I rather not have it auto update. The latest version of kodi which is 13.3.3 has the .ts file playback issue as is the case with Gotham. Surprisingly, the 13.3.2 version has it working just fine.
I have a fire TV stick and wanted to clear a couple of things before setting up kodi. Ideally I want to set it up once and then only update when there is a stable release later on.
I like the "ace" skin and have been using it on my htpc with gotham and I know that it has not added support for helix. When I updated my HTPC, it automatically moved all my settings in the old xbmc app folders to kodi app folders and things worked fairly smoothly. So my questions are :
1) Would it be possible to upgrade to helix when a stable version and skin support comes out later if I go with a gotham 13.2 on fire TV and the apk during installation will pick up and move all the required files or do I have to do all the configuring from scratch?
2) Is there any performance difference between the gotham and helix beta/nightly on fire TV if skin support is disregarded?
Any one? I was hoping some one here went updated from gotham to helix and found out?

When I try to play the videos Kodi either crashes to the FTV menu or restarts the whole device. I tried to disable the accelerators in settings and the video starts to play with stuttering and no audio. Anyone know what could be the cause of this and is there a fix available.

I had the same issues with both XBMC 13 and 14.. After lots of searching I found
I cant post links yet, but google "Work in Progress - Experimental simple deinterlacing" and you will get the Kodi forum that has an updated kodi for the issue.

Try SPMC. I had problems of somekind with all versions of XBMC that I have tried on the Fire TV til I installed SPMC. I have not had one problem with SPMC and could instantly tell a difference in the smoothness of streams and video playback.
I think i've tried them all.

My problem with any version of XBMC whether it be SPMC or KODI is that 720p MPEG-2 always stutters. I've tried everything I think including.
SW only
Listagefright only
Mediacodec only
Listagefright and MediaCodec
SPMC 13.4 & 14.2 (I think these are the final versions i used)
KODI 13.4 & 14.2 & 15.1 (I think those are the final versions)
My next try was going to be to use MX player and the playercorefactory.xml but so far I haven't been able to get that to work. It just flashes really quick and does nothing when I click on a channel.
BTW....I have comcast so everything is in MPEG-2 and I use an HDHOMERUN prime that feeds a windows 7 machine with WMC running serverWMC and Plex (w/ serverWMC plex plugin). I also have an xbox 360 and that works perfectly but the only way I can get fire tv stick to work reliably is by transcoding to h.264. But this adds at least 10 seconds to a channel change and It really complicates the setup and maintenance. I would really like to not have to transcode and use KODI on the firetv stick as my front end. However, without mpeg2 720p support I can't.
I currently have kodi 14.2 installed, but HD Videos are a little choppy. Definately watchable, but still a little annoying. I don't know where the prolem lies exactly because the CPU is only at about 30% load and there are no dropped and skipped frames.
So i thought maybe someone can recommend a version of kodi that works better on the FTV stick.
Any suggestions?
Try using SPMC 14.2. SPMC is basically tailored to Android devices like the Fire TV and works great.

its probably the fact your watching 24hz videos at 60hz... huge downfall of the fireTV imo.

And about the 24hz vs. 60 hz thing: Is there a way to circumvent this?

did you try the nightlies of Kodi? I moved out of SPMC back and forth and now am at one of the recent nightlies with my backup which has the root enabled for suspend / etc. I do like Kodi but its getting a little dated and crashes very often. specially when live streaming from a website.

Run any version of Kodi you want for a week to get used to it, then switch to SPMC, the results will be noticed quickly. Thats what I did and within seconds of playing live streams from my favorites list I realized that SPMC was the only version of XBMC/Kodi for Android that played every stream format smoothly. Every version of XBMC/Kodi I have ever used on android never played all stream formats without having some problem on certain formats, except for SPMC.

That was precisely my experience when I switched to spmc last summer on aftv. Some said it was placebic because from Gotham on there shouldn't be any real reason spmc runs faster than kodi. But after a couple of weeks I moved back to kodi because I found similar glitches. Maybe I should've given it another try?...probably not for my boxes because they generally run well and its a pain amending file paths for advanced settings among other minor reasons, but you've got me intrigued about using it on the stick. Helix 14.2 isnt running optimally.

When I first tried SPMC, I had the official XBMC installed. I installed SPMC, copied my addons and userdata folders. Then I tried the same exact streams from the same exact favorites.xml and they played so much smoother with SPMC than with the official build. It was very noticable. The official build did not have problems with every stream format, but it did with some, while SPMC has had no problems with any format. I ran them side by side on the same device and SPMC had better results so I ran with it instead of the official build. Like I said the official build is fine too, I just got tired of watching channels that made every movement look robotic and SPMC does not make any streams look robotic so for me its better.
Fire TV user here.
I really don't like SPMC's skip steps feature that it's backported from Isengard. It's even worse in every Isengard build I've tried.
Plus how it exits back to the Amazon home screen if you hold down the back button. That's really annoying.
Helix 14.2 gets my vote.
I've been using TVMC without issue. Wonder if I should make the switch to something else. Not really sure what I'm missing though.
Well I installed SPMC and copy/paste the appropriate folder to keep my settings/add-ons.
Performance seems the same except that now spmc is listed on recent apps.
