I have given a firetv to my parents, however I feel the rooted version has few things that makes it more valuable. The version of firetv I gave to my parents got updated and lost its root. I've been contemplating if I should buy a new one on amazon and hopefully root it and sell the non rooted on ebay?
Any view points? Do you think there will be a root for the firetv coming out for the new versions soon?
No one knows when a new root exploit will be available. There is no guarantee you will even get a rootable one. If the pros outweigh the cons of a rooted unit then try to get one. Your best bet for a rootable unit is a staples store.

Where are you located. I hope I don't wanna jinx myself by being so confident that I'll get the rooted version.
I did root a friends firetv this past week but the hardware was defective. It had some remote control issues and wouldn't work, so he returned it.

well good luck I'll update this thread and if I get the rooted version and if you don't. let me know and I'll help out if you like and if root's that important to you. I am semi confident I'll get the right version. The trend for not getting rooted versions is mainly the east coast. In LA, they send it from the Las Vegas location which may have the old stock lying around

In my opinion, do this.
When you start the firetv, connect it to wifi and after the intro video, if you see the menu items all fitting in one screen then you have the early version of the firmware which is very good.
Install towelrool and root it. (don't let you firetv idle as it will update) I haven't seen the need to block updates as I can always block the updates before its too late.
After Rooting it, disable amazon update. (note do this quick) before the firetv automatically updates.
Then update to the last rooted firmware using the guide. Not the one which requires unlock
Then unlock the firetv and go to the latest.
Ensure you su/block updates with each and every new firmware.
If you like I can give you all the files readmade. They will be large but Its clearly put in every directory. I also have the downgrade files if you like.
I bought one off eBay a few weeks ago that was rootable. What I have noticed is that the boxes differ on the front with the different addons that you use. The older box had the hulu printed on the front which indicated to me it's still on the old firmware. I was right it was still on the second firmware which was very old.
So as a tip, look at the boxes before buying. Maybe someone can confirm if I'm right or wrong

I've had a refurb now for just a few days. I can honestly say this is the first Android-ish device I own that doesn't overwhelmingly compel me to root and ROM it. The streaming performance is just stellar. And it is the best of the two devices it replaces (Roku 3 and Neo X5) and more. Aside from OTA (which is rare), it streams everything I've asked of it (so for) with aplomb. FiredTV Launcher give me a streamlined, uncluttered home page, and I can switch to the stock Amazon home page with just one click.
My viewpoint? No need. Don't bother. It's not perfect. But rooting it won't change that.

Yeah it is. You need to downgrade first. Remember be careful. Hopefully you have disconnected your firetv after sending the screenshot. Do the downgrade to the first version. use towelroot and block updates. aftv guides can walk you through. If you are in LA, PM me and I'll help you out if you need. but you should be able to do it.

TowelRoot will not work with that version. You need to downgrade first. use tr and then block updates and start from there. Depending on the version you have received, you may have to use the /sdcard folder vs the /cache. just follow the guides.

You need to have root in order to downgrade so that really doesn't make any sense. In order to use the unlock you need to be on 51.1.0.2 so you would need to downgrade for that...

If you have it connected to internet it most definitely downloaded an update so u need to get rid of it. DO NOT reboot if it is still connected. Download and sideload a newer version of towelroot. Run it. Download and sideload supersu. Run it and select normal method when asked. Adb shell into the fire tv from your pc. Type su then press enter. Grant access on fire tv. Type pm disable com.Amazon.dcp then press enter. Type rm /cache/*.bin
Now it's safe to reboot and it's safe from updates. Follow the guides to downgrade and unlock and whatever else u wanna do.

You're just going to have to wait to see if someone can figure out a way to obtain root on it While you wait, you may want to go read all the things you were supposed to read before you rooted (e.g. warnings in big letters about not taking updates). If you're going to root and play around with the sensitive bits of your phone, its pretty important to know exactly what you're doing. Everything you need to know is here, you just need to read it.
My last two phones have been Motorola and im new to Samsungs.. We used an app called Voodoo OTA Root keeper when there was a new OTA out. MOST of the time it would protect root on an OTA, but, like everything else, it wasnt 100% guarantee. Does anyone know if this app works with Samsung and the GS3?

I was rooted before the update but was tired of the dang nag screen...so after reading from others that rooting still works, I accepted the update and re-rooted + flashed update to radio. Everything has been fine.
I think the update took away part of the search functionality that Apple has been squawking about, so I downloaded that file to avoid the issue.
BTW I also had trouble at one point getting WiFi Tether to work, even using recommended profile = Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE). I deleted, then re-installed and it seems to be working fine.
Now I do have a question about OTA RootKeeper by Project Voodoo. According to the app page on Google Play -
Typical system where the protection won't work:
- HTC Desire
- Samsung Galaxy Spica
- Samsung Galaxy S / SII
but when you look at the app itself, it says that

Actually, i used OTA rootkeeper on my ATT GS3 to protect my root from the dumb search OTA update and it kept mg root alive. Im using stock samsung rom. So for me at least, OTA rootkeeper worked perfect. Just remember to go in the program (i refuse to call them apps), and back up your root before you apply the OTA.

If i'm not in hurry to get my root back, what am i waiting for and how should i know that it's ready?
To the OP, I am not sure if you are still having issues getting rooted, but I used the method described Here.
like another user posted, I was rooted and was tired of the nagging about updates, so I took the update and forgot to download Voodoo OTA rootkeeper. I used the above method and was able to reroot without a problem. I then used OTA Rootkeeper to maintain root. Havent had an issue since.
Hope this helps
Note: This Root method is no longer supported, most models have been updated to newer software and does not work. If you want this to even have a chance at working, you must have the original software that shipped with the phone 3 years sgo.
This is a great root method with easy to follow instructions that anyone can follow and without all the extra jibber jabber most do not understand. The originator of this root is @giantpune, please give him a Big Thanks!!!
**This Root Method has been confirmed working on the models listed below**
E980 AT&T (Does not work on 10P 01/08/2014 update)
E985 Euro/SFR
E986 Euro/SFR
E988 HK
E988 GCC

1st: Go to http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-E980 and download the drivers, let it install all the way before going to the next step.
2nd: Go to 7-Zip and download the program, it is the best one imo.
3rd: Download the attached root file below
4th: Un-Zip the Root file using 7-Zip to a known location
5th: Make sure in Developer Options you enable USB Debugging in your phones settings
6th: Make sure your phone is in Charge Only mode
7th: Plug your phone into your computer and give it about 3 minutes before going to the next step to ensure your computer can see your device
8th: Open the file and run the CurrentRoot.bat
9th: When it prompts you to go to MTP mode, do so in the same place Charge Only was found. LET IT SIT, 3 MINUTES MINIMUM!!!!! This will insure that your computer has seen your phone as a MTP device, if you rush it, the root will fail!
10th: Now hit any key to continue
11th: Once it is completed and your phone reboots, safely remove hardware to remove your phone.
You can download many free root checker apps from the Play Store or use SuperUser that is included with the root.

Thanks @giantpune
side note: I am not responsible for your phone, the above process worked flawlessly on my LG Optimus G Pro US Version E980 on 7/12/2013.
How do I know if I have the "Value Pack Upgrade"? I got an OTA update from AT&T/LG a few days ago, which completed successfully but my Android version is still 4.1.2. Is there a baseband version or build number I can compare against to see if I have this "Value Pack Upgrade"?
That was the value pack upgrade sir ?
I followed these directions exactly and it worked perfectly! I installed Root Explorer and it was successfully given superuser privileges.
Note to others: on step 10, the phone will reboot and the error message you may see on your phone (that a process stopped unexpectedly) is normal. I waited until the phone fully rebooted and finished loading everything before disconnecting my phone.
Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version: APQ8064/MDM9x15M
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build number: JZO54K
Software version: E98010k
Awesome, I added a note about waiting for the phone to reboot. I did not see the message you got but I may have missed it looking at my daughter dance last night to Xbox.
Enjoy sir
Thank you for the above instructions. Zero issues.
Waiting the 3 minutes made all the difference.
This is the way to go to root! Thank you again!

Well, the rooting police are after me..... lol
Tried to apply the update while my E980 was rooted. No go, got the 0x13e error. Research says that's probably because device is rooted.
So I unroot and try again a couple days later. Same error displays. Device restarts and a new error displays. Something like "Device is suspected of being rooted and rooted devices will not be updated".
So I'm hiding out until the heat is off.
In the meantime, any thoughts.

How would I go about rooting 4.3 for AT&T? Can someone point me to the thread of it exists? Yes I've tried the search function and no nothing exact came up. I don't want to mess up and then be "that guy" on here crying about making a noob mistake.

See Dr. Ketan and his thread regarding the bootloader on 4.3.....g
Will you be able to go back to 4.1.2 if you take this update?

But that's a thread specifically for 7100-based (non-LTE) variants, right? Whereas we have n7105-based LTE Versions...if I'm missing something please let me know. TIA.

I rooted using this method while still on 4.1.2 and it worked flawlessly.
I then paid for and installed SuperSU Pro and activated "Survival Mode"
Lastly, after the OTA update was COMPLETELY finished, I followed this simple procedure to get root back again.
SuperSU disables Knox for you on 4.3 which is also nice. I should have qualified here that I am COMPLETELY stock other than root. I have not "frozen" any apps., deleted any Samsung provided files, etc. and I have stock bootloader and stock recovery. This will likely NOT work if you have done any of those things.
Is there a flashable version of this? If not, can somebody make one? Thanks.
I'm running a custom rom and rollouts/updates from vendors freak me out because I don't trust not one of them. Knowing AT&T they have thrown in some bit of encryption that locks the bootloader. I understand this might not be the case this time but I do know none of them can be trusted.
Now if you excuse me, I'm 1/2 done with 1984 the book and my tin foil hat is making me itch.
Guys I need help I am stuck, I am using unlock att with tmobile, I check software update but it days interrupted, and I even tried with kies but it's not connecting at all, I tried 2 pcs.... Any help... What to do to update it... Please

The update has only been out for a few hours and we are asking for .zip files already ??
Sheesh...
Give the devs some time to pull it apart and clean it up...unless you would like Knox and a bootloader lock ??

I have a few questions for you and/or those more in the know:
If I were to do this same thing, would I be able to flash a custom recovery (like TWRP) and/or flash custom ROM's/Kernels like I can already do now? One of my main concerns is that the stock kernel doesn't support Boeffla Sound, and that really makes for better audio on this device...might as well take full advantage of that Wolfson DAC...
I have to admit, it would be nice to be able to use pure AT&T stock, but rooted, as a base...this is why I loved the old CleanROM AT&T SE so much...
TIA for any guidance you can give on this.
Side note: after ODIN'ing back to 4.1.2 MA4, it says I have a 741MB update I can take....I'm sure that's this 4.3 update...Culpeper, VA here.

I did the same as marchusdavis but it resulted in a total disaster. After I downloaded the OTA update from AT&T I restarted my phone and it installed through CWM-Touch. At the end it asked if I wanted to ensure root was maintained and of course I said "yes" there (as well as through my SuperSU Pro Survival Mode). When it booted, my WiFi no longer works AND I lost root.
If anyway has any advice on how to get to a stock 4.3 from here please let me know!
Ugh, having trouble updating atm.
Goes up to 30%, then my phone reboots and says
"The update was interrupted" or something like that
On stock 4.1.2 rooted with stock recovery if anyone can help.

I don't believe so, as I am completely stock, bootloader and all. If you want to install other ROMs, you'd need to use a different method I believe. Likely downloading this update either via Kies or something else, and use ODIN to do everything. If you search around a bit on XDA, you'll probably find someone who has done it successfully and posted how. While I like custom ROMs, I have not had a need to use one yet on this device. However, if Samsung doesn't eventually give us Air Command, that might be enough to make me try it!
Is it possible to get the official update from the leak or do I have to downgrade to 4.1.2? I tried updating from the leak but it said it's the latest version.

You can successfully roll back to 4.4.4 via 5.0.2.
5.1.1 BLOCKS the ability to DOWNGRADE.
I will keep this post updated as we receive OTA's in the future.

This is good as far as rooting goes. we can successfully roll back to 4.4.4 when our Devs release a root exploit.

Hopefully we can get an AT&T Note 4 lollipop stock odin.tar to flash back to that too if necessary.
I'd love to see a L odin.tar for this. My phone fails update everytime so I'm either going to need to odin it or go to the Samsung experience shop.
So what happens when everybody updates to lollipop if that updates the bootloader even if you flashback to 4.4.4 if they come out with root for the 4.4.4 bootloader won't that mess up the newer bootloader for lolly pop?

Your phone blows up and life will cease to exists as we know it.
But seriously know one knows, you know the risks when updating. If you're waiting for root and its that important to you then wait.
Quit trashing other threads with this question. Asking the same thing 5 times in 5 different threads is ridiculous.

He never accused you of talking trash. He said you are trashing all these threads by copy/pasting the same post into like 5 or 6 different threads. In other words, you're making messes and getting annoying. Ask the question in one thread, and don't spam all Lollipop-related threads. So many threads are active right now anyways, so someone is bound to see your post.
My bad guys i was just trying to see what ppl had to say and i was gonna ask if any one with the galaxy gear was having any luck with it working on lollipop

I first installed Titanium backup after rooting wit KingoRoot. Not to be mistakes for Kingroot!. After I froze the front-end for Kingoroot using TiBU, and installed SuperSU, I then made SuperSU a system app again through TiBU. Next step was to uninstall the Kinguser app in Its entirety. Finally, I rebooted and started Super SU, updated binaries and once again rebooted. After that SuperSU was the default and only Superuser app. I was worried and skeptical at first but it was flawlessly perfect and performed exactalr as it should have. I hope that helps.

I've also scoured the internet and can't find much on it as well.
The only thing that confuses me is the IR BLASTER doesn't seem to be turned on via the software.

LG V935 root Success
Hello, I used Kingroot to try a long time, have not been successful, today, I found that China's 360root is very good tool. Incredibly successful. I feel very happy. Although there is no superusu tool, but now it has the highest authority, I am still very happy.

Can you put me in the direction of the V935 image that you mention? I've bricked my V930 by using the wrong version of Kingroot (don't use the new version 5) and there doesn't seem to be any V930 images anywhere on this planet. Right now I'd settle for anything that will give my V930 some wheels again. A V935 image would do the job just fine. Many thanks.

Install Flashfire and run it, or use nandroid on a windows computer. Either will do the job nicely. And you will be the first to help all those ppl with bricked V930 tablets )
