Hello all! Ive just recently got my Xperia arc, and flashed a nightly build of CM7 on it, number 20. Everything seemed to run smoothly, but just now screen started to behave very weird, it almost seem to have osme kind of "ghostly" second touch.
The upper part of the screen is almost impossible to use, when I try select an app to move it on the screen, by holding finger down, it just flickers for a second and gets deselected. If I manage to select it and drag+hold, it starts spazing out all over the screen, with screens switching between eachother by it self.
The problem is especially noticeable in games, where you usually have a joystick controller in bottom left corner. When using it, I usually trigger the buttons above it in the upper left corner which I am no where near at with my finger.
Is this a ROM issue, or hardware issue? Ive been using the rom for couple of days with no strange to it, and now this happens. Any ideas what the source can be?
ROM failure.
Sorry for bump, but apparently the problem remained. I changed to XDA rom, which too is based on CM7 thou and after a day I stumbled upon same problem of ghotsly second touch on screen.
I cant hold to move apps, cant precisely press a button in game on left side of screen, it then triggers some other button nearby. I do get haptic feedback from long press on a homescreen, but the "add new" menu popups only every few tries Any ideas of what may be causing this? I would really like to avoid the hassle of resetting the phone and sending it back for repairs :/
try stock one or miui.
It sounds a bit like your screen had a bad encounter with water...
Could this be the case?

No, this phone is only few days old.
I think I am noticing a pattern.. screen behaves this way only late evenings, till next morning. I never noticed the issue during the day, but then it was there again for no reason after I left phone for couple of hours (it's past midnight here at the moment). Now when I think back, same was previous two evening, issue only noticeable during late evenings. Could my phone be possessed lol?
It's quite weird issue too. Upper half of the screen seems to have a ghost touch as I said. When trying to add a widget to upper screen, I only get a haptic feedback from long press. When playing games, all buttons on left side (landscape mode) get activated as soon I press one of them. Most weird of all, is that screens works perfectly in app drawer and settings, but not in app/homescreen. I will test how it is again tomorrow and report. If it works just fine again as if nothing happened I will be really puzzled.
Currently on CM7 Xda version, same was for official version. I am considering updating to MIUI, just gotta figure this radio difference stuff, but am becoming sceptic to whether this issue really lies with ROM and not app/settings.
Yep, issue is gone like nothing happened at the morning, this is is haunted ._.
I've figured the cause, it only happens when the phone is plugged in and charging. Beats me why thou, what remains to see now is if it is tied to the kernel or not. Posting it here in case others with similar problem stumble upon the thread.
Are you using the stock charger, i used to face bit similar problem when i used to connect my old HTC USB charger... later i discover the HTC charger was giving only 500mA , where as sony one is rated at 700mA.

Thanks for the tip! Turns out it didn't like my 1000mA charger I am using for all my usb stuff, but the stock on works perfect (it's 850mA).
Anyone else getting the ghost touch problem?
I couldn't work out what was causing this on my phone so I enabled show touches in the development menu and it shows.
It goes from 2 to 3 spots on the left hand side of the screen.
It's not a major problem but happens at least 3 times a day and won't snap out of it unless I put the phone back into sleep a couple of times.
Do you think maybe scratches on the screen cause this?
TIA
Is your phone connected to a charger when this occurs? It might be it, since im experiencing the same thing since htc desire hd.

No. Can happen at anytime. Quite random.
It takes a few on and offs with the sleep button to stop it.
Can't get off the lock screen until it goes away because I can't move the unlock slider.
Very annoying.
I had the same problem - the first day i got my hox. With and without the charger (with charger a litte bit more often i think).
I pushed the complete left side of the screen (top) carefully and now it works well. No more ghost touches ^^.

Ok. Once I pushed around the screen edges, the left side has some play and moves maybe a mm with a slight creak.
I push it in but still that little bit of play on the left side.
It's quite impossible to show the service centre the problem because its so random but now I can show them this.
Cheers.
I hope you'll get a new "perfect" hox and i'll not have the same problem later :fingers-crossed:
Hi guys. I know many of you have had touchscreen problems and whatnot, i searched but it seems like this one is a bit different from usual. Yesterday the phone was totally fine; i woke up this morning and it had a lot of touchscreen problems: at first it registered touches without me doing anything, but after a couple of reboots it was just unresponsive. After another reboot and some messagging, the problem reduced to a strip on the screen simply not working. The strip is located exactly where the first notification on the status bar is (like when you receive a message and you click on that notification). I have the trueancestor stats bar buttons, so that zone is a tad more down than usual. Anyway, all I did yesterday was a quick game. I think it may be the flex cable not working because of the sliding, but it happened all of a sudden, not gradually. I must say that some weeks ago I had the same "registers touches by itself" issue when typing, but a simple reboot was enough. I tried doing factory reset, but nothing so far. Also I can't use pc companion to flash everything stock back (I unlocked bootloader months ago, even though I relocked it; I dunno if it's locked or not right now), and I can't seem to find a working flashtool download link -_-. I don't think that would help much, it probably is a hardware problem, but who knows. I'm on true ancestor 1.6 LE, stock kernel.
Any help would be great, as I fear the phone will get refused in assistance because of bootloader unlocking.
Did your phone had contact with water? When my screen had contact with water it registered touches randomly.
it didn't. it has a screen protector anyway; but that's not the problem for sure. it doesn't register randomly, simply a strip doesn't work now...
Hardware problem. Could be flex cable or digitizer.
Today there were two moments it began to work again, but a few minutes after each one the problem came back. Sigh...
Mine does that when the screen is moist or my hands are too oily. Are you sure you're working in a dry environment?
mhh... exactly that? I dunno, my hands are dry and i think the screen is too; it has a quite thick screen protector (the skinomi one), so even if it got moist that shouldn't be a problem, right? I'm now living in a different town and that may have changed something, but the problem didn't show up until now, and it was sudden.
Also, I noticed that using gamekeyboard on a certain profile I had buttons placed on the strip, and pressing hardware keys mapped to those buttons actually works. This restricts the problem just to the actual finger-touch-detecting mechanism. Does anyone know anything about this?
Edit: lol I heated the phone up a bit with a hair dryer. It works now. I hope it will last and I'll not have to do this again over and over
My Desire Z had a fall, and has developed two problems
1 - The hardware keypad has started to take hard-press and sometimes prints double characters on single press. I think the alignment is out or something... any other guess ?
2 - The touch screen sometimes stops working from an inch up from the bottom and continues to half an inch. Before and after that patch, the touch always works fine . Mostly, the whole touch screen works fine. But when the patch gets non-responsive, I have observed that by turning the screen off and on a couple of times makes it work again. I am not very sure what the problem is. Any clues ?
Thanks
I'm also experiencing a similar issue - for me it's usually an area that corresponds to the top row of the
on-screen keypad (for unlocking) or the top of the area for unlock patterns (portrait orientation).
Mine is a 2 year old DZ w. Cyanogenmod 7.1
No HW key problems & no droppage.
Liberal application of isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth - especially around the edges of the screen
seem to help a little bit but not often enough to be better than random.
Switching the screen off and on occasionally helps but most often I get annoyed and use the HW keys to
unlock.
I have noticed that, after powering on the device, the SIM-lock keypad works just fine but the (different)
screen-unlock keypad fails. This leads me to believe it to be a software issue.

I have had this experience on my G2

Thread moved to Q & A section.
So i am going for Digitizer replacement will post the result when the phone is back.
And what about the Keypad taking hardpresses ? what can be the issue there ?
so my desire z is in the shop for repairs. lets see what problem is diagnosed.
I have read in another thread in this forum that the hardware keyboard (need to press hard on some buttons) issue can happen when the phone falls.
Apparently, the flat cable that connects the keyboard to the rest of the phone gets loose and causes such trouble.
Since your phone is in for repair, I'm sure this will get sorted when U get it back.
ok so my phone got back from repairs, the guy couldnt fix the touch-screen rather made it worse. Now the touchscreen doesnt work at all. So i cant unlock the phone and cannot test the Keyboard problem. The guy said the touch problem is related to the ribbon cable and not the touchscreen itself.
Note 1: He says he tried replacing the touch panel altogether but it didnt work.
Note 2: I still think the ribbon is fine (call it intuition)
Note 3: I am giving my phone for repairs again, but this time to HTC service center which would probably cost me a lot more than third-party repairs but at least it will get fixed.
I will update when I my phone back from HTC service center.
Could you not unlock the phone by opening the keyboard ?
It does smell to be an issue with flat (ribbon) cable to me as well. As if there was some loose contact before (caused by you dropping it), and after the repair guy took the phone apart, he probably made even bigger mess by ruining the flat cable completely.
From my experience (and I've claimed warranty 3x for the broken digitizer (touch panel)), if it's broken, an area of the screen (or the whole screen) will be permanently dead. It would not come back to life every now and then.
btw, mine always started being unresponsive in the very middle of the screen, a bar of height around 1 cm (somewhat less than 1/2 inch). Each time they replaced the digitizer.
If it;s the flat cable, you shouldn't end up being charged too much - those thingies are very cheap (in China) and the labour will probably be the majority of the price. Fingers crossed.
So I got my phone back again... The HTC repair center was not located in my city so I went to another (better known) repair shop. The guy said, "your phone hasnt been opened at all from the touchscreen side, any *repair guy* who claims he has opened it and tried this and that but couldnt fix is simply lying. This said, he opened up my desire z replaced its Touch Panel and voilah! my desire z is sensing again in 15 mins
What's the status for the keypad and need to press it hard to work ?
nope... I had it cleaned using alcohol / thinner. now it works fine.
So, I updated to CM 7.2 last night but the touchscreen problems are still there.
Updated using CWM and deleted data & cache whilst doing so.
I really hate the prospect of getting a new phone as the current models available
in DK are all without physical keyboards
Hey guys,
I have some weird issues with my XS and I don't know whether they are caused by software or hardware. Here's what bothers me:
Every time I connect something to my XS like the usb cable to charge it or transfer files, an hdmi cable or even headphones my phone gets totally unresponsive. The touch buttons respond after about the tenth press and even the screen is unresponsive as hell. If I scroll through the app drawer for example, my swipe gestures are often recognized as a press so that apps are launched although I made a fluid swipe gesture. On the other hand pressing on a screen to launch some app sometimes isn't recognized at all. If I plug out the whatever cable, everything's okay again.
So, what do you think? Is this a hardware or a software issue and what should I do now?
Some background information: I already tried a factory reset and such things. My phone software is stock ics (see signature).

Hmm i havent experienced that before. Try updating to .50 stock and see if it is still there. If it is try and roll back to gingerbread. This will tell you for sure if it is sofware or hardware.
I'll try that but if you say that you never experienced that before, hardware would be more suspicious.

Many people experienced this, i still have it.
They said its a touchscreen fault or something and its needs to get replaced by sony.

Are you planning to send it in? I mean I hate this bug and it bothers me a lot, but giving away my lovely phone for a while seems a bit cruel
Can I send it directly to Sony or do I have to send it back to my vendor (amazon)?

Guys I have the same problem. When connected to the official charger and USB cable the problem is minimal. However with a car charger or an auc jack/headphone the touchscreen is unusable.
I found this on talk.sonymobile.com (not allowed to post links as newbie.. so hIIp://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/50236

Re: Touch screen problem with Xperia S (LT26i) [ICS Problem?]
Hey diyotama,
The guys at Meteor Ireland that sold me the phone are sending it to Sony for repair today.
Thanks,
sobanek
PS. They've identified the problem as a battery problem (something with voltage) that's why when anything was plugged into the phone, the touch screen would lag - because it didn't have enough voltage for the touch screen, and therefore, it wouldn't recognise all my touches.
The problem is I've unlocked bootloader and flashed some roms, lately very satisfied with Slimbean. However there are some issues with flashing and warranties.
I wonder if sending in my phone for repairs would be wise. So I would like your advise.
Is the cause a battery related problem? Is this ROM related?
Send in the device or live with the results of flashing?
I still dislike this issue but I can live with it now.. I noticed that my touchscreen bugs mostly in the lower parts of the display. So I installed some framwork mods that allow to use my phone upside down (rotated 180° and onscreen buttons enabled). So in the end its not a big deal for me anymore because the most touches are performed in the lower section of the screen.
I also unlocked my bootloader lately. If you want to send you phone in you can relock it but maybe they find out what you've done. But in my opinion this is a clear hardware issue which hast nothing to do with unlocking or flashing. So I think they can't say that this is your fault.. Regarding the voltage theory: interesting theory but I don't think this is true.. As I said: my touchscreen works perfectly in the upper part while charging but not in the lower..
I had issues like this when I used a different charger.
Yeah thats right.. I found out that the original Sony charger delivers 1500 mA.. If my phone is connected to this charger, the effect is at least noticable.. But when I connect my phone to my 800 mA car charger, the phone feels absolutely unusable..
wut... I got tired of using a screen protector, so I took it off. Immediately I noticed the screen became unresponsive at times, and discovered it was the bottom part that was unresponsive (as @mister-g1 wrote). But it only happened when the charger or aux was connected . And then I re-applied the screen protector and the problem was completely gone! I can reproduce this in real time with the app "touch test" and record it if anyone is interested.
So it looks like I need to buy some new screen protectors..
Also, did anyone send their phone in for repair and got it fixed?
When the screen protector is altered, you must change it. Regarding that other problem, well...always use original chargers, headphones...etc. If along the way you did otherwise, well, that's the source of your problem. My advise is that from now on you must use only original chargers/headphones/etc and your phone will adapt back, it may take a while but it will do it.
TIP : Try plugging in the headphones while the screen is off. See what happens when you turn it on.
Best of luck.

I should be able to use it without screen protector.. Anyway I bought 6x screen protectors, so I have enough for a while The problem occurs with original charger and headphones, and when I plug it in when the screen is off. And even though I have used my N7 charger, that should not be a problem.

Same here.. I always used the original charger and the problem was always present.. And using another charger shouldn't be a big deal.. Thats definately a hardware issue.. Think of the yellow tint screens and so on.. Sony does not always deliver the best screens.. The Xperia SP has similar problems like shown in this video:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/05/17/some-xperia-sp-units-suffering-from-display-glitch/
Exact the same thing happens if I try drawing linesa while charging..
