[Q] MDL to NH7 before reflash. Help me decide... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi folks,
I'm the happy owner of a T-Mobile M919 with MDL firmware, GSM modem upgraded to NB4, running Dirty Unicorns ROM (a weekly of 7.8, from August...). DU ROM is awesome but this version has a few quirks that I'd like to exorcise, and mostly I'm just itching to try something different. When (or if) DU goes to Lollipop I'll probably go back to it but I'm feeling like trying something else out for a while, just for a change. At the moment I'm torn between going to Slimkat (I have a tablet on this, works great) or simply the GPE ROM for the S4. Either way I'll probably go with Themer and play around with different themes.
Anyway, my unit is on MDL bootloader (and thus MDL LTE modem). I've had zero "modem issues" so far. But I've heard the latest ones seem to do a better job, so I've thought of doing a firmware upgrade to NH7 (stock) before reflashing the latest TWRP and putting either Slimkat or GPE ROM on.
Doing so of course puts on Knox stuff, which will be tripped when I flash the recovery. But it won't actually mean anything for my use of the device. And I'm the second owner of this thing so I probably can't claim Samsung warranty service anyway, should I need it... (though, on a prior second hand unit, I did get Samsung service, as they weren't very strict in that instance).
I'm caught between the logical side of my brain saying: go to NH7 bootloader... there's literally no downside for you, other than perhaps slightly lower resale value.... and the emotional side of me saying: you've got a knox-free handset... why soil it with knox when you aren't having modem problems?
Can you guys/gals help me decide which way to go? Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving is probably "flashing day" either way.
Thanks in advance for all your input.

I'd go with the emotional side. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're not having problems with LTE reception, why update? There is literally no real advantage other than POSSIBLY better LTE reception... which you apparently don't actually require. Just my $.02

I think the NH7 bootloader and modem combo works best with an NH7 rom. Since you're not even gonna use that, no real reason to fully update, except for maybe the modem

OK, for now I'll leave my bootloader at MDL. Building up the energy to document current settings that I like and catalog what I need to backup before wipe/new ROM....

Just update it. As you said the stupid Knox warranty doesn't Matter since you're the second owner, but besides that everyone that bought the s4 on mdl your warranty is officially expired.
I bought mine on mdl, didn't give a crap about Knox so tripped it immediately on purpose on mk2, and have seen nothing but data and service improvements with each up.

Roms

Hello there. Just wanted a question answered. I just bought a note 2 (coming from the HTC One) to try the note line without breaking the bank. What I wanted to know is if I could flash international note 2 ROMS on the tmobile version of the note 2. I'm loking for a ROM that basically mimicks a lot of the note 3's functions and also has unique looks and customization with exposed and wannam. I think I came across one on the At&t forums so I also wanted to know if we could openly flash At&t roms on this variant of the phone as well without issues. Also, ive read a little and have seen many posts about issues with wifi and fixing it with some kernels. Can someone elaborate on that please? Thank you for your time.

If your T-889 is still on a 4.1.2 software version and hasn't been updated to 4.3 you may experience wifi initiation problems on 4.3 touchwiz based roms.
You can remedy this by either updating to the new official 4.3 version which installs the knox enabled bootloader, or use PC odin to flash Dr Ketan's bootloader to enable the rom and device to work out wifi start up. A third option is flashing a custom kernel specially the devil kernel by derteufal1980. I have had mixed experience with devil kernel but overall it is good. I personally stock with the stock kernels as they do everything pretty well.
Personally I would go with the Dr Ketan bootloader patch option as it doesn't "burn any bridges" or limit future use like the official bootloader can (causing version regression hassles, allowing knox to pop e-fuses etc). Using the bootloader patch will allow things such as triangle away to work so that you can get back to official stock status for whatever reason you have (selling the device, return for factory service etc).
Others will tell you differently for a variety of reasons that are, at least partially IMHO, valid in a practical sense. Their opinion is valid for their circumstance, I have different needs than they do. YMMV.
If you flash the Dr Ketan bootloader patch you will also want to flash the current modem. There's are odinable versions and some for installation with a custom recovery. They are all the same except for the installation method. If you choose the official upgrade methods you will automatically get the new modem during the process.
There is no downside to installing the current modem, it makes signal acquisition for LTE quicker and I haven't seen it do anything worse than the previous versions.
Before installing anything read all the applicable thread info and check your md5 data.

Got cha. Thank you! I was checking out that rom too. Looks clean and nice. so im assuming being t-mobile phones, if we want to flash international version rom, the section that must be used is the 7105 correct?

Before you flash anything, boot into stock recovery mode and check if the screen has a line saying knox warranty void or something similar. If I only has device counter you can go ahead and do what you need to do. Once the knox bootloader is installed, there is no going back (a big reason why I prefer the patch option).
If it has one that mentions knox counter don't bother with flashing any bootloader stuff as it is already been taken down the 4.3 update path.

Knox is an obstacle to be dealt with. You can do all those things with it. Doing things like reverting to previous versions of Android are more frustrating (and less obvious) than with the old bootloader.
Also, once the knox bit is tripped there is no known revert method. If you ever need knox functionality you are out of luck. Most people will never need it at this point. Samsung may or may not decide that the warranty is invalid based on knox counter status. People have stated both Ok and void results. YMMV.
Rooting a knox enabled rom can be tricky but doable as long as you follow the processes outlined in the guides.
Me personally, odin flashing the wifi patch (and modem) was by far preferable. Both can be found in the Tmo gn2 forum right here in river city.
Having said all that, some quality time reading and deciding what is important for you personally will take you far with this device. It really is a great phone and extremely capable.
Best of luck to you.

How to Update Android on Unlocked AT&T S3 I747 for MetroPCS/TMobile

Hey guys so I decide to get the SGH-147 AT&T S3 off of ebay for MetroPCS which enabled me to get a 2 year squaretrade warranty. After looking back at it now, I feel it might have been a bad idea since Metro has a MIR 349.99 deal for their S3 version which would mean easier android update since it would be on Metro servers if I'm not mistaken. Anyway I can't return the ebay phone now unless there is some software or hardware problems within 30 days
So my problem
I am stuck on 4.1.1 on Kies and when I check for update, because the phone is based on AT&T servers, it won't work since I'm on Metro. I wanted to see if there is anyway for me to update my phone to 4.3 which is the current version. Although, I've heard some people have 4.3 problems?
If that's not advisable, could y'all tell me how I could atleast get to Android 4.1.2? Also is there a 4.4 update in the works?
I just got the phone today and would like to be running on something better than 4.1.1
should I flash the AT&T phone to a MetroPCS ROM lol, if any of those are actually available, or if I were to flash, should I flash it to Tmobile?
First off, if its I747, you MUST flash only those Roms. No others. Now, that's indeed a nice phone with LTE Antenna.
You really heard correct. The 4.3 upgrade from the carrier (ATT for you) /Samsung has a lot of issues. I wouldn't do it for any reason. Particularly on T-Mo network, you will have severe signal issues as reported by others. In addition, it now flashes an EFuse onto your phone along with locked bootloader and other scary stuff.I really would not do it.
Lastly, XDA is organized by devices. So even though you are a T-Mo/Metro PCS customer, you will have to post on AT&T SGS3 forum over there.
Speaking of Rom update, Please visit Root66 Thread for this device. You will find Rooted version of your Current Rom. Dunno why but he does not have 4.2.x for you. Please do your research someone else must have posted it.
Now speaking to 4.3, yes there is a way to get 4.3 on your phone without the issues I mentioned above. But first you will have to flash a Custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP with the help of ODIN on your phone. Again do your research well. Once those are in place, take a look at this thread. It will provide 4.3 experience without ANY concerns or issues. Read it carefully and then read some more. Good Luck.

THANK YOU! Looks like I got a lot of phone work to do over the weekend. SO do you think it was good/should I stick with this AT&T S3 or should I try to sell it for a discount and buy a Metro PCS S3? The ebay buyer won't take my phone back unless there is a hardware or software problem inherent to phone...unless I fake one ?
If it was me, I'd keep the phone. Metro's S3 does not have LTE Antenna. You'd have been stuck at lower speeds.

Metro's s3 does have lte
As for the OP you can flash at&t or T-Mobile ROMs it really doesn't matter because they are backwards compatible (I have done it) and you can flash 4.3 ROMs if you don't want to take the official 4.3 update which you can easily do with Odin without the need for kies or ota.. Now, I suggest the first thing you do is flash a custom recovery and then experiment with 4.3 ROMs, if you keep having problems flash 4.1.2 roms.. There are some things you need to do though to get 4.3 up and running so I suggest you read up on it first. Good luck my friend!

It was my impression he wanted Stock Touchwiz Roms not AOSP.

What's the deal with lte radio?

hey guys I'm on 4.2.2 still. Rooted it and deleted the galaxy walking app, so haven't been able to do legit update, and with working alot just haven't fooled with it. Anyway I'm off and have time, want to come up to kitkat, am I not able to update my LTE radio? I'm reading and searching before turning to asking, but all I'm seeing is if I update it my sound will act up. Am I stuck on an old radio now? Was hoping for improved signal, can I go stock, update and reroot and everything will be current?? Anyway any help is appreciated.
If you don't care about tripping Knox counter, just flash the NB4 firmware with Odin and you'll be good.. I recommend fenny's fixed firmware
Edit: well it will only trip if you flash custom recovery or kernel, other than that there is root method without tripping if you plan to stay stock

im not staying stock, just want the updated lte radio on it. thinking of going lg g3 since sammy become such a pain in the ass. I've flashed stock and am updating official kitkat now, i guess that will update my modem and lte radio also, i'll reroot after that and throw something on there
If you are updating officially there shouldn't be a reason to manually update anything
i was just trying to save time, my home internet is crappy ( 100.00 bucks a month for 5mb, more like 1-3 mb) and you have to use wireless to update. I'm on kit now, abut to root and find a rom

There is a thread in general specifically for updating radios for those of us still on MDL. If you were to have followed that guide you would have updated your radio without any sound problems, would still be KNOX free, and would still be able to have the option to run 4.2.2, 4.3, and 4.4.x ROMs flawlessly.

i've been searching here for years on everything. Unless you stay in the loop everything is just cluttered. Even rooting, I'm looking and reading threads from pre 4.4.2 where chainfire link was last updated in 2013, it sucks searching here. And I thank you guys for the help. I'm rooted now and didnt want to ota, but everything I found to read said I could update the modem but not the LTE radio without sound issues... I must of missed something. LOL, I had a ton of tabs open from searches before posting. Been rooting since iden on nextels in early 2000's so it's just basic info I need thats hard to find here , tons of threads I guess. Anyway lets a get rom on this thing..

I totally agree and understand. I've pretty much been tinkering around the S4 forums since a few weeks after release (before I even purchased my S4) and have followed pretty well everything from square one so it's pretty easy to remember THAT I've read something but not remember WHERE I read it... Looking back through the Q&A and General threads, I couldn't imagine just now getting into the S4.

I would be interested in that thread... I have updated my GSM modem (modem.bin) to NB4 but as I understood it, the LTE part is tied to the bootloader. So, those of us with MDL have to retain the MDL LTE radio. If it is possible to update the LTE radio, without the sound/wifi problems, and retain MDL bootloader and thus no Knox, I'd love a link!

[Q] Reflash to rooted semi-stock from CM11 & MJ2?

Galaxy Note 4 Acquisition Day is rapidly approaching, but first I need to do some housekeeping... like get my AT&T S3 unlocked so I can keep using it after switching to T-Mobile. I'm currently running CM11 [d2lte] w/MJ2 bootloader, CM kernel, and TeamWin recovery. As far as I know, the phone has to be running a stock(-ish) ROM in order to use the unlock code from AT&T.
Paranoia point: I had a HELL of a time reflashing from a pre-rooted Knox-disabled 4.3 ROM to CM11... literally, I spent a day and a half trying desperate, semi-random things over and over again until it the flash seemed to finally "catch" and work. I have a hunch my problems might have been eMMC-related. For obvious reasons, I'd like to be better prepared this time around & I'm open to suggestions for specific semi-stock ROMs to try.
More concerns: I know you can't downgrade from stock 4.4 to stock 4.3... but can you downgrade from CM11-4.4 to stock-derived 4.3?
I'd very, very much like to keep the phone un-Knox'ed, so I can have my cake (keeping it rootable & reflashable without permanent consequences) while eating it too (preserving my ability to flash it to official Samsung 4.4 someday in full Knox glory, just in case I end up needing a Knox-capable wifi device for company email purposes someday). If push came to shove, I guess I could deal with Knox'ing it now since I'm getting my new phone in another week or three, but I'd really rather avoid burning the Knox bridge behind me if I can avoid it.
For unlocking, most stock based roms will work. As long as it has the stock dialer.
Im not completely sure about MJ2 firmware, but I believe you are still free to flash older versions. If this is confirmed, you can flash 4.1.1 firmware and unlock for free. Then from there update to MJB or NE4.
Once there though, if you trip the warranty bit you can never use knox. So if you want to preserve that ability, dont go above MJ2. (Not sure if it has the warranty bit.)
As for roms, if youre on at least MJ2 or newer, you can flash any rom you want. Old or new. Its just the base firmware that cannot be downgraded once on MJB or newer.

Anything special updating your phone?

Just wondering if there's anything special or cool about getting your phone updated to the newest version available, I got my phone already with a custom rom on it(modified), can't update it thru OTA, or 4.2.2. is till a pretty decent Version to sit and and still kick ass? ;p
IMO, i like KitKat (4.4+) more than Jellybean (4.3-). You can update via Kies if you want but you can't go back. Or you can just stay with the bootloader you have now and just flash custom ROMs, kernels and modem. 4.3+ has KNOX security but if you don't have a warranty then tripping the "KNOX counter" is nothing to worry about.
Nah, dont have a warranty on it. Got it with a custom rom, i guess some1 flashed it before selling it to me, it runs good n wut not, just was wondering wut i might have been missing out n w.e. xD if newer versions improve battery life consumption, makes it faster, etc, then it sounds good xD ill prolly try thru kies later n see if it goes thru
You dont HAVE to upgrade. Try Insane KitKat. Its a great custom ROM. Fast and good battery life. And if you download the sickness mods v5 (4.4.2) before he uploads v6(4.4.4), you can add whatever you want from the AROMA options.
Never used any of those custom roms.
On other hand, today i opened my phone to do some stuff on it, and it felt like some1 touched it(one of my bros), it wanted me to restart my phone to upgrade to 4.3 update. I guess somehow i got t-mobile OTA update and they clicked on it and downloaded the 700mb+ file. Oh well i guess, how good is the 4.3? Much better then 4.2.2? Or so so?
The new nh7 modem is tight. You can do this update because you are still on the MDL bootloader.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2898809
Oh awesome, so i can still do other stuff if needed eh? xD This update will just update modem etc, but not touch the bootloader. So im good?

An OTA update will update your whole firmware. You might get another update for NH7 after you do that one.
Ahh I see, but OTA's don't usually change your bootloader eh? Just everything else.

Oh well I guess. Someone took my phone while playing games, and downloaded the new OTA, now it's going to keep bugging me to update it. Loved it at 4.2.2. Hope the nh7 is going to be better, heard tons of ppl having battery draining, bad reception, etc, maybe just a small % of ppl. not sure o.o Someone said nh7 is going to be smooth and fast, etc, haha that would be great rofl.
I updated with Odin and then flashed Insane NH7 ROM and haven't have any problems. But I have seen people saying bad things about their signal. I guess it's a hit or miss

Yeah, thats y i dont want to update it to newest firmware atm, dont want to deal with all the bs that comes with it. Can i keep delaying the update eh? As for what you did, was pretty fast eh? And were u rooted? Just hate readding all my apps n info n **** back on here that i use daily.
Once you update whether OTA or Odin, you will have to root again. You can ignore the update. There is a way to stop the notifications, just use Google.

How good is that insane rom? I mainly use my gs4 for calling, navigation, listening to music(downloaded/streaming), streaming movies sometimes thru wifi, games sometimes, use apps to remove wasted ram/Junk files/help with battery drain, etc. Main thing is really i need is the good signal at all times, so navigation and all that crap works awesome, calling, net. Tbh id love to remove all the unwanted bloatware that i never use(but that can be done by rooting). Did you stay on mdl bootloader, n just flashed ur custom rom eh?

The Insane ROM is a great one. It does have bloat (Insane 4.4.4 NH7) but it is easy to get rid of. I stayed on my MK5 bootloader but just recently switched to NH7.

If all you've done is download the OTA but you haven't actually applied it AND you are still on the 4.2.2 MDL bootloader, I'd say leave your bootloader on MDL. I'm not saying don't run updated ROMs, I'm just saying not to take an official update. Use Odin to flash the newest modem and use custom recovery to flash any of the 4.4.x ROMs in the Android Development section, Original Android Development, or Unified Development sections. If you use custom recovery to flash the newer ROMs you still get the benefits of having updated firmware, you just don't end up having KNOX. Myself, along with numerous other users here, are still on the MDL bootloader, NH7 modem, and running modified/stock 4.4.4 NH7 TouchWiz ROM with no problems to speak of. The only thing about keeping the old bootloader, the only modem you can update is your GSM modem, not LTE; although as I said, I really haven't noticed any drop in reception... I still get full LTE whenever I'm in an area which has LTE penetration...

Was bored and decided to explore my phone, installed super user, installed titanium back up xD Not really sure how decent this rom or if its stock as it looks like this phone was rooted before i bought it lol. To think i was afraid to root it, yet it was rooted all along, funny tbh xD But yeah i still have decent signal etc in diff location, but sometimes wished it was better lol.

Should i upgrade my modem or anything to 4.4.4 version, or get a custom rom? I'm also running on network: LTE/GSM/WCDMA, or should i use something else that would run better everywhere? ;p I'm on simple mobile atm which under t-mobile i guess. Also, what are cool useful apps for gs4 for rooted phones? And anything else that might be useful to add here Thanks!
