I've been struggling with this for a few days and thought it was about time I just broke down and asked.
What I'm trying to do is install the CM9 ROM on the my Telus model SGH-T989D.
I've been using CWM 5.0.2.6 as my recovery tool. I followed the instructions on the CM9 Page and formatted the various partitions and did a factory restore (all a few times) and then flashed the ROM. Everything seemed to go okay, however the phone would hang on the CM9 boot animation indefinitely.
I googled this issue and found that it was a problem with CWM not clearing cache properly. So I installed the latest CWM (6.0.1.5 non-touch) using ROM Manager and tried again. This time, the format cache function of CWM would hang.
After more research, I found that TWRP seems to work better. I downloaded gooManager but the Telus version is no supported by it. I did a manual install using dd (following instructions here) but now if I boot into recovery it hangs on the TeamWin splashscreen and the phone is unresponsive.
I think if I could find a decent recovery tool, I would be good to go so, in summary, can someone recommend a good recovery tool to use, or a version of CWM that will work for what I need it for, or a fix for the TWRP?
Thanks!

there are only two choices of recovery and my choice is TWRP and I am quite sure if you went into the TWRP thread you will find someone with the same issue as yourself. Also no need to flash from the app when there are zip versions readily available in the TWRP thread.
I do not own the Telus version but I think asking in TWRP would be your best bet. Also what version did you try and install from goo manager app.
Also remember you are not the first person with this issue search search search again...

there were more but I figured these were enough to start,,,, PM me if you still need assistance, I used 5.0.2.7 with scripts for CM9 but that was before I gave touch recovery a shot
Thanks, that helped somewhat... I was able to get TWRP 2.2 installed using cwm but CM9 still hangs on the boot screen. I guess I didn't wipe all the sectors I was supposed to? Or maybe I should try the TDJ wipe.
For anyone interested here's what I did to get it all working:
Use Odin to install CWM
Use CWM recovery to install TWRP-2.2.0-hercules.zip
Use TWRP to flash Darkside Super Wipe and then flash custom rom
With this method I was able to get CM9 running on the Telus S2X
How about to get a jelly bean ROM to work.I flashed the new 2.3.1.1 ver. Of twrp but still can't get a jb rom to work..I keep getting boot loops..now ics roms flash flawlessly.. What could it be

Hello, i have a big/little problem with TWRP, i have the bootloader unlocked and installed twrp for a few months but kept the stock rom. Today i received a notification abount an update, so i flashed the stock recovery, instaled the update and then flashed TWRP back removed the usb and entered recovery, it shows the screen with instal, backup, etc but it has no response. Tried to flash it again, tried to flash an older version but nothing. The update was from 3.14.401.1 to 3.18.401.1. I installed then CWM and it works but i want the twrp back because my backup is made with twrp,Any ideas? please help
I guess its a problem with the base. Guys who are on the 3.17 base also have this problem with TWRP. afaik it has something to do with the touch driver that is based on the 3.14 base.....
Correct me if I'm wrong
And a TWRP backup can't be restored with CWM. Thats a problem, hope it will be fixed, i would like to know that i can restore my backup when i want. No known alternatives? You are probably right, because the lock button works and no response from the touch
Try this one

Its an older one that needed an update because of the 3.16 base !
It works, thaks a loot. Can i restore my backup with this oine? or the version doesent count if it's still twrp
Should be no problem !
Thanks again
Hello guys,
Just got my m9 a few hours ago, decided to root,s-off etc
Anyway, I did something stupid and Im stuck on the android logo.
Here is what I did.
-I updated the device through the stock recovery, there was another update but I didnt install i.
- unlocked the bootloader, phone rebooted and was working fine
-installed costume recovery(TWRP), I didnt boot into it because there wasnt and option like in the m8 to boot in recovery from bootloader.
-I reset the device and installed the update(stupid move I knew the stock recovery is not there)
- I got into TWRP and the updated failed so I had the SUbinary.zip so I plashed it and decided to reboot
-Here I got a note that theres no OS installed so I installed android Revolution, I placed it in the sdcard prior
- after flashing it I pressed on reboot yet I get no OS installed and now im stuck on the HTC logo.
BTW I can boot into boot loader but it says sd card not mounted (64GB)
Edit:
I entered into recovery, flashed AR again, its installs everything normally but I realized on the installation log last line : set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
still I get no OS installed
I got it working now. Anyone whos having this problem just use the beta recovery because the official one is broken
here's a like https://basketbuild.com/devs/Captain_Throwback/One (M9)/Recovery
just flash it normally and install the rom again.
now i will have to go back to stock recovery and download the OTA the flash TWRP again -.-
will the OTA work on the ARHD and stock recovery or thats not possible?

I dont think the OTA will work.
either find the latest full RUU and flash it, or an older RUU, flash it, then do all the available OTAs.
Then redo TWRP and ARHD.

Thats good to hear, sometimes TWRP will say that there isn't any OS installed but actually there is just reboot the device.
After updating through the OTA I installed ARHD and I got the same error again with the latest recovery. I think its because when I did wipe the data there root directory is changing make the phone unable to boot or there is a problem with the rom although it flashed before the update.
Here is a fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/one...h-recovery-t3066720/post59934542#post59934542
If it didn't work try to format data in the recovery and reboot. Make sure you have a ROM or back up on an SD card.
Since your phone is running I would suggest you to S-off because from what I understand is RUU (for Europe) will only work with S-off

hope this helps others
I've been trying to root my HTC m8 and everything was going perfect until I went to load the twrp recovery in order to access supersu. I followed a youtube guide and everything was fine, but now whenever I try to load recovery, it will either say loading recovery and then go into my stock OS, or it will be stuck at the recovery screen and I'll have to power down the phone.
Is it because the twrp recoveries I'm using don't work well with my hboot? I'm completely new to this stuff so I have no idea what the problem could be. My HTC is from At&t and my Hboot is 1.61 and I've used twrp recoveries 2.8.7.0 through 2.8.4.0 and none have worked. I've also used 2.7.0.2 and the philz_touch_6.26.6 with same results.
I've erased the cache after every flash recovery, and rebooted the bootloader before I recover again. If I'm overlooking anything or doing something dumb please inform me! I have no clue what to do now...
Are you sure it's a HTC M8 ? hboot 1.61 is a HTC M7
Hi, I flashed the FOTA Kernel with TWRP 2.8.7 onto my phone and inside TWRP I flashed the recovery with the 3.0.2 TWRP image (telling me "Successfully flashed")
But after rebooting I still have TWRP 2.8.7
Using windows command line and "fastboot flash recovery "TWRP.....img" I get this "FAILED" message.
What am I doing wrong?
I even flashed the phone back to stock and then followed these instructions but same result.
Is my phone broken or sth?
Hi H4NNE5, the Xperia M does not have a recovery partition. The TWRP recovery is included in the boot partition when flashing the kernel. Try to upgrade with the TWRP-Manager if your phone is rooted.
Hi Lightningsfire, Thanks for you answer.
Ok, that's weird because I read a lot of threads but none said anything like that. I'm more confused right now.
Anyhow the LineageOS is not properly working on my phone anyhow so I set it back to Stock Rom and check back in a few months if it improved
One more question:
So if I flash the whole software package the boot partition is overwritten then, right? Because I noticed that the Recovery was a different one, after I flashed the system.
