Give me a bit, I realized I didn't do a great job the first time, and found out things were different. Going to try a few things and then update this post. But as of now, as far as I can tell, you need a root machine. Testing to see if you don't need to be rooted right now. Might take a bit because I noticed that if you use your Amazon Cloud Drive to host the pictures, it seems to download them at boot or something. But the default ones seem to be downloaded 1 at a time.

Oh boy. "Phone storage space is getting low." Google, please sort it out.

The dreaded message for not much space left. I've recently been testing out a few apps to suit my needs. And I've bumped into the message that shows the limitations of the eminently custmisable Android. And I haven't even downloaded one game!!!
I'm really hoping Froyo 2.2 (if that is what it will be called) will sort this out.
Pleeeeeeeease Google. Do us all a favour. Give us some room to maneuver.
I hope it gets sorted soon too. But as has been mentioned previously, HTC could have easily put 4-8gb onboard, plenty of space to install apps.
Google are adressing the issue, just have no idea when!
Re: Oh boy. "Phone storage space is getting low." Google, please sort it out.
Interestingly, I was thinking that the manufacturers of Android devices must know something because all the current crop of high end devices don't really have more than 1gig of memory. RAM or ROM. The Incredible being the exception. This was more nailed home when the Dell future devices (Thunder, Lightning, Flash, etc) came on the news feeds. The devices had no more on board memory than what we have now. And they are scheduled for release in 2011!
We all know Google is aware of tje issue. But what and when they are going to do is anyones guess. Amd why manufactures haven't been releasing devices with increasing on biard memory is perhaps telling.

Google has already officially advised a couple of weeks ago that a solution will be available soon. What the timeframe of soon is hasn't yet been defined, nor whether it will be a patch fix or a froyo upgrade. But either way, it's coming soon
I thought it was a battery life issue? that larger on board storage tended to lead to battery life being very short. What they need is a secure version of app2sd that's official and doesn't lead to piracy. Hopefully 2.2 will contain this.
I have low space and I know that, does anyone know how to remove the notification without having to uninstall apps as I don't plan at the moment to install any more until the update. I think I will give it a month and if the update isn't out by then I will try root and apps2sd.
pathetic......
clearing cache seems to be daily task now.
I don't believe this. I just uninstalled Google Earth so that I could test another app. Didn't like the app. Removed it. Went to instally Google Earth again.
Can't find it in the Market.
Can't find in via m.google.com/earth. Message "The requested item could not be found."
Can't access it via the link that Google sends via sms.
Just my luck!
Search the nexus forums for the apk and install it directly.
That's what I did, no problems.

Login via your Google account via appbrains app then search via the app or the link http://www.appbrain.com/ via your PC...
Choose install in the web browser for example and via the app on the phone choose manage and sync
@ OP yes hope for 2.2 or in other words Froyo will have it, but curious how fast HTC will get us an update
What I personally use to manage the ridiculous small app memory space I use the app "Quick app" to cleanup cache space.
Re: Oh boy.
This is completely driving me nuts now. Every single day the same issue. At first it only triggered below 8mb free but now its become a joke. Same error even at 17mb free and can't install anything.

I feel you. I just uninstalled a few, reinstalled G Earth, have 15.something MB left, and no notification. Maybe it needs to drop below 15 or get to 12.
Either way....

I don't get how you've run out of space... I've got 87 apps installed on my phone (counted every icon on the pop up full program list) and still got 47MB's left...

A quick count up shows that 37 of those icons are pre-installed anyway, so you've not got quite so many apps as you think.
Add in a satnav and 8 or 9 games like me, and you will find yourself at the limit very quickly :-(

Yeah I understand that a lot are pre-installed, but that still leaves 50 apps installed. I've not got sat nav installed (use google maps navigation) but i've got 20 games installed (nothing major like a big 3d game).
Does the sat nav install its self to the phone? Guess that would take up a lot of room...
What's the best way to clean out the phone cache etc. I found Quick Cache Cleaner that got me a few MB back from the browser.

[Q] How to resolve "Low on Space" error

Hi, Noob here. I have been wrestling with a "Low on Space" error for the last couple weeks. I understand it is a partition issue, and I'm hoping there is a ROM that will resolve the issue. The phone is rooted, but otherwise stock.
I have searched, but was not able to find a post that addresses this issue, even though it seems to be a common one. Maybe I just don't know the lingo.
Could someone point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe someone can chime in and explain the "partition issue," I'm wondering what that is and why it would be necessary.
Low on space, Google not syncing...
I've recently been getting the "low on space" error too which has been preventing my google accounts (gmail, contacts, calendar, music) from syncing... I'd remove apps, move apps to SD, clear cache and still get the error with no syncing. I thought Twitter was the culprit so I removed that app and then everything started syncing and the error went away. At that point I then added google music beta to sync and once that finished I got the error again and google wouldn't sync. I then cleared data on google music beta and now able to sync again. I'm guessing google music is the culprit, but I thought that would just be caching to the sd card... This is really frustrating since I cannot utilize google music beta right now.
I have plenty of space available as well:
SD: 8.5 free out of 15.5
Internal: 6.2 free out of 6.6
Phone memory: 302 free out of 748.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
I am having the same Google sync issues as well, gdemore. It is not really a space issue, as I have plenty available:
SD: 5.2 free out of 7.5
Internal: 4.5 free out of 6.6
Phone memory: 407 free out of 748.
I have moved all apps to SD that I could, and use "1tap cache cleaner" from time to time.
I have gotten the "Low on Space" issue intermittently since the phone was new, but a reboot always made it go away until now.
Is the "Low on Space" error not a common problem on Droid Incredibles? After doing some Google searches, I thought it was. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Go to setting, applications, running and look at what apps are taking up space. Usually twitter, Google earth, Facebook. When you open so many images it caches them so you can review them with minimal loading time but at the cost of precious space. Anytime I get the error I clear data on these apps and it goes away for months, until I've viewed a ton of pictures again, hope this helps

Not for people who are chronic rom flashers because everytime the flash a new one its the same as clearing data

Clear cache/dalvik, try freeing up some memory by killing a few apps.
Thanks KKellett & dmeadows. I have tried clearing cache, killing apps, clearing data, etc.... I still have the Low on Space error. I'm going to pick a ROM to flash, hoping that will resolve the issue. Maybe getting rid of the bloatware will help.
Given that I have so much space on the phone (see above), I was hoping for a solution that didn't require constant cache clearing/app killing/data clearing, etc. I was hoping some of the ROMs would allow the phone to use more available memory for cache space than is currently allotted. IMHO i shouldn't need to micro-manage apps/cache with so much memory available.
Check your data/data and system/app directories with root explorer and see if there isn't some stuff you can get rid of.

The "low on space" error comes when the \data\data partition, limited to 150 megabytes, becomes 90% full. Deodexed ROM's tend to take up more space in that partition than odexed ROM's. Sense takes up a considerable amount of space there, as do contacts. For instance, my daughter has thousands of Google and FB contacts, and they are taking up nearly half of the space.
There are two ways I have found to "fix" the problem.
1. Using Titanium Backup Pro, be sure to re-integrate any updated apps back into the ROM (that will take their data out of the partition); and
2. Purchase NotEnoughSpace, which enables you to create a partition outside of \data\data and move the bigger space hogs out of it. I run it regularly and keep at least 40 megabytes free in \data\data to avoid the problem.

Thanks for the tip and the background knowledge hgoldner! I'll give that a shot.
I've been getting the same warning as the OP for a week or so now...
Rooted DINC, but still on stock rom. "Appears to have" plenty of space available.
There is a fix, and no it is not deleting all your apps to get it to go away.
Basically for some real dumb reason HTC has given the data/data folder 150MB of storage space and when that gets close to full you will not be able to add anymore apps to your phone. So even if you have 5+GB of space left you are stuck.
But there is an app in the market called "NotEnoughSpace" that I was a little leary on trying at first but after getting it and seeing that it works great I wanted to share this with everyone.
I was able to move Google Earth's 16MB to the partition this app created and have it work, and freed up all that space in my data/data folder.
BTW INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
1) Create a partition (I made a 1GB one on the phone in emmc)
2) Pick an app taking up a lot of space (like Google Earth) the app will show you how much space each app takes up in the data/data folder so you will learn why you are having an issue.
3) Click to open up the app (Inside NotEnoughSpace of course) and click all the sub directories (most apps have 4-5) and move them ALL to the partition.
That's it. And you can always move everything back if you want. But just note that if you move the app itself OR don't move every sub directory the app wont work after a reboot. Took me a few tries and multiple reboots to figure this all out but now I am good to go and freed up much space.
I had mixed results using NotEnoughSpace while reflashing ROMs and restoring my apps with Titanium. I'm a bit nervous to use it with anything I don't mind a fresh install of.
I used to have this problem all the time but since I've started flashing ROMs it hasn't been an issue. When I was running stock I would just clear the app data for my browser, facebook, and dialer (this is your text messages), usually worked.
Clearing the data for my Dialer App did the trick. Haven't had any space errors since!
Used SMS Backup+ to keep them just in case ;-)
Well, actually that's a lie. It keeps popping up at least once a month. I gotta start flashing some Roms...
I've tried cleaning everything out, but that doesn't work. Is there anyway to fix it without rooting your phone? honestly, I've never done that before, and I'm afraid I'll just trash my phone. Are all HTC phones like this?

Without rooting you can delete apps. The lib files and to a lesser extent the data files fill up /data/data partition which has a total size of 149 mb (crazy low). Netflix has a 19.3 mb lib file and and Google Earth uses 16.61 mb. Also syncing facebook can take up a lot of space in data files.
If rooted I like link2sd which allows you to create a symbolic link for the larger files to the SD card. I am using about 70 mb of the /data/data partition only moving a few big files over to SD.
If I root my phone, do I need a new ROM or can I leave Sense UI on my phone? I'd really only being rooting to fix this issue. I'm not interested in playing with other things. I don't have much of a software/programming background, and I honestly don't want to mess with it.
Thanks.

why root

Is the only reason to root a fire tv to install a custom ROM. Will XBMC still run on a un-rooted device
I have a device that is rooted and only use it for XBMC. Last week it locked up. Going to send it in but they will probably install the latest firmware on it. Thats OK as long as I can still install and use XBMC
Thanks Rick
Lots of reasons to root but no you don't need it for xbmc.
typically rooting only give you access to customizing the actual OS and running certain apps (like openvpn). to use xbmc and 99% of apps, you do not need root..
Rooting ftv
Is is true that if you dont root, Amazons updates can brick your device so you cants use XBMC anymore?
Rooting is keeping your options open for the future.
1. If XBMC or sideloading is ever blocked by Amazon by future updates then rooting w/recovery installed gives you a chance to block the Amazon update.
2. Rooting allow use of USB external hard drive for storage of media with access via xbmc.
3. Possible custom rom in the future. It would be nice to get Android TV onto this box.
4. Root allows you to use an external SSD to essentially replace the 8gb storage and put a lot of games/apps on the Firetv.
5. Allows you to put on a cleaned up Amazon update that could close up the possibility of sideloading.
To add to the above list for me the most needed are.
1. Quick support from google play. You need root for live desktop/remote view. I can support my friends and family remotely.
2. Emulators from google play which needs to be purchased.
3. Change the icon to Kodi.
4. Upcoming custom rom of android TV.
5. Removal of Amazon enforced menu items.
plus the others mentioned such as USB drives.

Are you sure. I try adbfire on non rooted ones and change of icone does not take effect. I always thought it was a rooted feature. That's good to know.
By the way bestbuys in LA now have the latest non rooted versions. Its sad.
There should be a new way to root. these devices are getting scarce by the day. I always have people come up to me and ask if I can make them one, and I direct them to find a correct piece.
Amazon can't stop you from using Kodi (at the moment).

I still haven't seen the need to expand my storage beyond native. I have kodi with a library of about 200 movies and google play and a few apps. haven't seen the need for additional space . One point to note here is that I did recover about 2 GB of my lost space by running a google play software called SDMaid Pro. That scans for orphan files that are not required and cleans up space. Costs about 2.50. That again needs root for google play.

I'm always having to delete apps to make room for others.. it's a pain
I have a few large-ish games like Game of Thrones, The Wolf Among Us (with all episodes it takes up a lot of space)

Oh maybe then. I'm not into playing games. the only games i have is the emulators like md.emu for sega or mame etc. those are really small. If your into games then yes 8gb can be a limitation. Also give SDmaid a shot. you'll need google play to get the pro version that matches orphans and recovers lost space. I got 2 gb back which is a good thing with a space strapped storage.
The day I need to expand the storage which I may need as I have about 1.5 gb remaining. I'll look around as to which script to use. i believe by expanding, the firetv bootup becomes slow. I also got a usb 2.0 hub during the black friday sale from staples for 2 bucks. I didn't know what to buy then so got the hub. Its targus and still packed.

thanks I've seen that in the past. I will try that when needed but for now I'm ok with the internal storage. I plan to buy the m.2 ssd and put it in an enclosure when I'm ready.
I didn't want to open a thread just to post this but what are the cons of an unlocked bootloader. I'm already rooted with the playstore installed but why would or should I unlock my bootloader?
So wait, are amazon planning on blocking sideloading apps? Where has this info came from? I don't yet have a fire tv but if they are gonna block sideloading, I'll spend my £70 elsewhere. Not a single chance I'd be subscribing to prime or anything like that.

no one knows. And if you are still contemplating, you probably have missed out on the rootable ones. However if you are in the UK, that is a no go anyways unless you go through the hardware root. I highly doubt Amazon will disable sideloading, however there is no telling what they will do eventually. If you are rooted and update blocked, then you can always use your device the way you want.
PS: Lots of us have extra's for the rainy day ! Its a super fun toy to play with. Unlocator, Streaming. I'd say go for it. Its given me hours of tinkering around fun.
As I've said on many other occasions, they can't disable sideloading. That is, as long as they expect people to still develop apps for the Fire TV.

You can move Kodi data from internal storage with this (Amazon only supports FAT32):
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Change_settings_folder_for_Android
, add a hub and an NTFS formatted drive and you're good to go.

[Q] what mods or apps to use

Hey guys I'm new to the fire TV I know kodi is useful and I've installed that on the current firestick I have that I'm playing around with but I bought 3 more with voice to give to my sisters and my brother for Christmas.
So my question is what's the best mods or apps or add ons to use for these? I have no clue how to customize kodi yet I've seen Firestarter didn't know if that is the best to open to kodi with.
Pretty much my siblings aren't very tech smart so I need something I know will be easy and do a good job
Thanks in advance guys
Also is there anything to make setting up 3 or 4 of these easier or quicker?
Best thing to is -
1. Set up one Kodi unit how you want it (settings, addons, addon locations on the main menu, splashscreen, backgrounds) once it's perfect move onto step 2
2. Install USB Sd card Wizard, it's on the Xfinity Repo (source - http://www.xunitytalk.com/xfinity)
3. Open the configuration in the USB Sd card Wizard & make a location on your fire Tvs storage
4. Backup with the Usb wizard (do a full backup)
5. Transfer the new backup & any background pictures you want to your laptop/pc you can do this with FTP/ADB/ADB Fire or ES File Explorer
6. Follow step 2 & then step 3 on your new Fire Tv
7. Push the backup & background pictures to the new Fire Tv
8. Now do a restore & restore the backup
9. If it is not fully the same as the original stick or device then restore it again (sometimes It takes two times before everything shows up)
10. Now close Kodi & or reboot when it's finished (if it freezes on a 100% just reboot with the select & play/pause buttons held down for about 6seconds
11. Voila a exactly the same Fire Tv unit with all settings & backgrounds the lot
12. Repeat for the other units
If this helped press that thanks button
