I've searched/read through a bunch of threads, and I guess this isn't a big deal to many people as I really haven't seen much discussion. I don't always like my notifications to have a sound or vibration aspect to them, so I'm curious about the current state of Galaxy Nexus/ICS visual notifications when the screen is on but the status bar is hidden.
I was disappointed to see Ice Cream Sandwich continue to prevent the notification LED from lighting up when the screen is on instead of the original Droid's initial behavior that kept the LED on with the screen on. I've glanced at a few custom ROM feature sheets, but haven't seen any notes on whether the option to keep the LED on while the screen is on has been introduced yet. For those who have been flashing ROMs, is this a feature in some/most of the stabler ROMs out there?
I'm also wondering if anyone has messed with trying to put notifications in the soft key area? Even with the status bar visible, it can be annoying to reach the top one-handed to swipe down... so full-screen or not, I think it would be pretty great to be able to have certain notifications pop up next to the back or multitasking soft key (even something as simple a block of color indicating mail, SMS, voice mail, etc.), and then be able to tap the notification to go to the app sending the notification.
I just use an SMS pop up app.. unfortunately text notify which IMO is the best at this doesn't work on ICS yet..

Thanks, that's a good point that I had previously discarded because I'm not a huge fan of pop-ups with dialog boxes. But this reminded me that Light Flow has pop-up notifications that I hadn't previously tried, and it turns out they're actually toast notifications (which are preferable to me). So that'll definitely do until CM or whoever lights up the LED with the screen on.
2 days ago I started getting a strange lock screen on my S3. I noticed it when my alarm went off in the morning. There was a plain black and blue lock screen. When I swiped past it, my alarm showed up. When I dismissed my alarm, my normal lock screen showed up (complete with the normal unlock pattern dots.)
This new lock screen doesn't show up all the time. Maybe 2-3 times per day. I think, but I'm not sure, that it's being triggered by the phone going to sleep. Turning the screen off and on only triggers the normal lock screen. The new lock screen never overrides the default lock screen - it's just over top of it. Also, it looks like if I disable lock screens altogether in settings, the new lock screen goes away.
I've uninstalled all launchers except Lightning Launcher and TouchWiz. LL's lock screen is a separate app that I do not have. I've uninstalled all lock screen replacements that I know of (I only had Widget Locker). I checked the list of recently updated apps to try to figure out if it's a new "feature", but nothing. I've checked the list of running apps, along with apps that automatically start up on load and I don't see anything strange.
Does anyone know of a way I can determine how to figure out what this is? I'd like to get rid of it.
I'm running StockMod ROM 4.3 (rooted). A screenshot is attached.
Thanks.
Hi!
Does StockMod ROM come with the Active Display feature? Because what you are seeing might some kind of Active Display...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2450697
I didn't see Active Display, but I did notice that Dynamic Notifications was enabled. Not sure when or why. I turned it off and I haven't seen anything pop up since. Hopefully that was it.
Thanks for your help!
Part of the reason I purchased this phone was because Samsung finally addressed my main concern with the Always on Display: Third party app notifications. I was even more stoked when I found out that you could act on those notifications and, while it is a huge improvement, I have one little complaint.
I wanted something more like the Moto X. I tap on the notification and it just...opens. With the Note 7's implementation, we have to unlock the screen after double tapping. I don't understand this extra step. I tried turning off lock screen security completely, but then it just doesn't show any notifications on the AoD. I tried the Iris Scanner and that's faster and more intuitive, but I don't want to have to use it to unlock my phone when I don't have notifications. I don't generally use lockscreen security (nor do I want to) and Samsung phones are the only ones that let you use pay without it.
I suppose I should just be happy that we have third party notifications. I've been wanting something like double-tap-to-wake on Samsung phones for years. We're close, but that extra step is just a tad annoying.
I'm baffled by this as well. I believe this is my only gripe about this phone. That indicates how great a device it is.

Why no notifications? Is it more of a permission thing or more of a aod service looks only for lock screen notifications and not shade notifications? If so, silly but I guess if you have no lock screen...

I updated my always on display app in the Samsung app store and now if I double click on a Gmail notification it takes me direct to Gmail after a second and I'm also able to see and control music playing on Google Play perhaps an update might fix your issue
Updated from within the always on display setting themselves as shown here in the just click the about

This app can make a notification button on always on display to enable double tap on s7
So I was annoyed not having an LED notification light on oneplus 6t so I tried to make one of my own.
As OP6T has amoled display whenever a desired notification comes the app brings in a black screen with notification LED looking animation.
Though this is tested on OP6T, it should be working for most Android Oreo and later phones.
If not working for your phone, I'll suggest you to send me logs at [email protected]
To use it:
Install App.
Disable any battery optimisation for the app.
Give notification access permission.
Give full screen permission(if any required for your phone)
Select apps you want notifications for, by choosing a color (Only apps you set a color to enables LEDs).
Note: On successfully selecting a color for an app the text in which the App name is written should change to that color
Thats it.
For MIUI 11 devices make sure that AutoStart is enabled in App Info. Also check "Show on lock screen" permission in other settings.

Note: To turn off the LED and to unlock phone double tap anywhere on the screen or use power button.
App now available on Play Store, please rate and share if you liked the app.

Working great, good job!
What about System Apps (Phone, message etc.) ? I'm not able to find them in your app.
Gmail is missing as well and it is not a system app.
Thanks in advance!

Same here. Also, an off switch for each app would be more convenient instead of picking white colour.
This is just what I needed, works great on my phone. Thank you!
I would consider using this if and when you include system apps. They are the only ones I'm interested in getting notifications from. Thanks for your efforts
Fantastic
Brilliant
Go work for 1+
Show them how to do the job properly
Great start!! works like a charm, agree on the systems apps thing though..
Wow, Great App.:good:
Works Perfect.

@HarshBoy99 Hello! Thank you for the job you''re doing, but if you don't mind, i would like to point some important things.
You'r app uses a black overlay with a colorized dot in the corner, it's cool but there is a but. If The device is in a pocket, and you're using a pocket detection, the screen will turn on and show the pocket detection screen - what kinda annoying issue.
Another moment, again - becauses there is a use of black overlay, when there is already a notification panding and you recieve anothere on, there is a head-up notification with the all status bar info that shows up, again - kinda annoying.
As a recommandation - trigger the built-in AOD app instead of using a black overlay, that will fix the issues i've mentioned above + there will be an option to use fingerprint scanner on notifications.
Wish you the best!

Well I have included pocket detection in app, i.e if the LED is on and the sensor is covered the activity will be stopped. But if you have pocket mode on, it will show you the pocket mode screen for a brief moment and then switch off the display. This will help save battery if phone is in your pocket.
Yeah on that heads-up notification, I haven't found a way to get rid of this but it is only an issue of few seconds.
There are already many apps that bring on the default AOD display but it doesn't feel like an actual LED and moreover we can't change the appearance of AOD as it is a system app.
Thank You!
I wish there is an more option for WhatsApp. I do not want to receive LED from the Watsp group
Thanks

There is Note: unlock phone double tap anywhere on the screen.

I have been using the app for some days now. I have also locked the app in recents to avoid it being killed or stop functioning. But when I get a notification, double tapping doesn't work instantly. Have to tap 4 times at least. Also, on unlocking the phone, I am in the Notify Buddy app instead.
App is great if you don't mind me offering suggestions I have a couple.
The light to move around in intervals across the top of the screen or even the two corners just to prevent possible burn in, say if you get a notification in the middle of the night or something and it blinks for hours on end (I know the chances are slim, but better to be safe than sorry)
Possibly an option to cycle the notification light if you have multiple notifications, so if I have a sms text and a messenger text it would blink once for the sms and once for messenger and cycle between them so I know I have 2 notifications.
An interval setting maybe how fast or slow for it to pulse or to keep it static. (If you choose to make it static warn it could possibly cause burn in)
If it's possible a way to keep the overlay active unless the notification is gone, I tested the app sending myself an sms text just to make sure everything was working I left the notification and the overlay didn't go back to the LED the screen just stayed black. If I'm not mistaken an actual notification light would stay active until the notification for said app was cleared.
That's all I really have for suggestions, I appreciate what you're doing with this app it's honestly the best alternative to any of the apps attempting to replicate a notification LED. I don't want you to think I don't like the app I'm just thinking of how my old phones with notification LED's behaved with notifications. Again thank you for your work and I hope my suggestions were something that could be of use.
Other then waking the phone this app is bloody great ?

Well this was exactly how I wanted for my app to function, but while testing it myself I observed that I had pending notification almost always and it would drain the battery exponentially. Therefore I went with notifying the user only while he is away from phone.
Most of all notifications dont work or pop up unless i bring phone from lock or screen off. i have looked into alot of things but still it doesnt work right and with this issue even the tile doesnt work. i think gmail and phone and texts but thats about it. also im not sure if its due to pie or these newer phones.
Do you mean, when a notification comes in, the screen stays off and does not show the notification pop-up? Like what Apple iOS or BlackBerry 10 does?
Do you still hear the notification sound (if you have one set)?
Does the notification LED at least blink (again, if it's set for that)?
By design, Android doesn't turn the screen on. Not sure if it ever woke the screen up for notifications. Maybe some OEM UIs did that, but Samsung doesn't.
Look up "Glimpse Notifications" in the Play Store. That's what I use on my S9. Works great. Also have it on my Fire HD8 tablet.
Nah it's like as if the app isn't running in the background or just doesn't give notifications while screen is off specially with like discord but with tile works with phone unlocked but with screen off.
Okay. That's something I'm not familiar with. Someone else will have to chime in.

I have the exact same problem.
I have to press the power button to see and hear the notification.
