[Q] Nexus 7 very laggy after Lollipop upgrade - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I flashed the LRX21P factory image onto my Nexus 7 2013 yesterday and to be honest I'm really quite disappointed with the performance. Most of the material design animations seem to be running slowly or dropping frames, scrolling is jittery and even the performance of many of my games (the ones that still work, anyway) is much worse than before.
I've seen comments elsewhere with other people having the same experiences, just wanted to get a feel for how common this is and if there is anything that can be done to fix it.

Did you wipe data? Old data cannot remain or it will ruin performance.

I used the script included with the factory image. Unfortunately my Nexus 7 won't even boot right now, so I'm going to restore it from my Kitkat backup and not muck about with it again.

You really need to do a fresh install when upgrading to a major new version of an OS. Trying to keep your old data and settings is a recipe for disaster.

On my Nexus 7 2013 at first time it was running laggy, but now, after few reboots it's running OK, but I think it can be faster.

a lot of people have same problem

Reboot and install clean master. Maybe fix it

It is slightly laggy but not a deal breaker

I used the Stock Factory Image to upgrade, and it gave me absolutely no issues at all..
I did a COMPLETE WIPE, then installed the image via Wugfresh's NRT Program/Tookit and played with it for about a week.. It broke a few of my apps.. So I decided to go back to Carbon's Nightlies 4.4.4.. I won't go back to Lollipop until a decent Custom rom is released with Xposed modules... I did not notice a performance boost or anything different other than a complete interface change.. I had to download a beta copy of Titanium Backup to restore the Data of my apps so I could at least restore a few things.... Lollipop isn't ready for prime time, stick to your latest version of Kitkat..

Xposed doesn't work on art. And there is waaay more than a ui change. There are security enhancements that I have been waiting for. Even though one of my favorite apps isn't updated to work yet (dish anywhere) I can't go back, lol. Onward to the 21st century!!

I know Xposed doesn't work on ART, hence why I downgraded to my trusty Carbon 4.4.4 where its tried and true..
The developer of Xposed doesn't even know if he will port Xposed over to Lollipop, although I have confidence that he will eventually.. I never liked the Stock version of any version of Android.. But because its open source, or at least up until now, there will always be someone out there with a CM port, or Carbon.. ETC..
Lollipop broke a lot of my apps.. Thats because some developers haven't caught up.. I like Lollipop, but I hate the middle pull down menu.. other than that, it's fantastic.. Battery life really good, smooth and gave me not a single issue while I used it for just over a week... But I missed some of my games.. and favorite apps.. Then I temporarily downgraded to 4.4.4.. Until the 3rd party developers can polish this amazing rom..

Mine lagged after flashing as well. I just reflashed and now its a smooth as ever. Stock kernel

I'm quite happy back on Kitkat. Since Google appear to have pulled the OTA update I can't see a reason to rush to upgrade right now and I probably shouldn't have been so impatient.
Interesting to see the poll is almost neck and neck too.

I was worried after seeing some of these comments, but I flashed Lollipop last night and my tablet is running great!!

Absolutely great advice for any issues after a rom flash. If you are fastboot flashing rather than taking an OTA, it's so easy to just reflash the system. If needed, reflash all components.

What is more reliable right now? OTA or AOSP 4.2?

Hi everyone,
I have a GSM GNex running the OTA 4.2 rooted from bixie. I am having a lot of lag/fc/reboot issues. I first just flased it on top of 4.1.2 by just wiping caches and ran pretty laggy. I then did a full wipe of data and caches and started fresh and still not much better. Then I format system/data/caches and reflashed and still not any different. Before I try a different rom or flash back to 4.1.2 (don't want to, I like the new camera in 4.2 a lot) for the time being, can anyone share their experience between trying AOSP and OTA roms and if one is more reliable compared to the other? I work a lot so it's tough for me to dedicate a good hour or so redoing my whole phone setup to find out it's not any better than what it was prior so any help would be great!
Thanks guys
why dont you go 100% stock and root it yourself? it really takes no time at all.
i have no idea if that rom has any under the hood changes to compromise performance like that.

As far as I knew, that was what the bixie rom was: Stock with Root added. I've tried AOSP in the past and they never really ran as good or as reliable as stock on my phone so that's why I always have stuck with stock for updates and just had root access added. Now I am reading that AOSP is more reliable currently than the OTA update ROM which had me thinking I should maybe try a good, semi-stock AOSP rom to get me by if it's reliable enough, or moreso than the OTA.
I haven't used the OTA 4.2 yet, but I have been running kalo86's AOSP ROM with good success. I initially did a flash+factory reset for his 4.1.2 ROM, but all updates since that have been flash+clear caches.
Compared with stock, it seems to have better battery life. Also, I think he has taken the time to fix minor little bugs that were introduced into AOSP.
^Thanks!!
I'll check into that ROM and maybe give it a try when I have some free time here.

P930 Gingerbread 2.3.5

After testing all the versions of Andriod 4, I have to say that I'm not impressed with the direction that Android is going. Still way too many problems and I'm sick of the color cyan. I think Gingerbread is going to be "Windows XP" for Google. Ten years later people are still using Windows XP because it's a good OS, Gingerbread is a good version of Android. I'll continue to use it until I'm forced to upgrade.
So after many hours of searching, finally manage to rebuild a AT&T stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 LG-P930-V10f-Oct-31-2011 rom. After I got it up and running, I made a TWRP backup before adding and deleting apps and sign-in to google account. So if anyone wants a copy of this backup, I'll post it on my 4Shared account. I'm going to make another backup with all the stock AT&T apps uninstalled. The apps that won't uninstall but are still considered bloatware and the LG Update app will be blocked from loading. I'll post a link after it's uploaded.
We have this.. Ho!No! Made a backup of all stock roms quite some time ago.
As for GB, I'd have to say that at least upgrading to stock ICS is my recommendation as many apps require 4.0+ and in my opinion, many bugs were fixed and some really important features added from GB to ICS (not to mention ICS to JB).
Just a suggestion.

I remember running CM9 without any issues. I still sometimes consider going back to it for its stability and battery life. Some ICS ROMs can work just fine. Its a matter of finding one that works and that you like.

Scotsman What is the format of your image file (not your TWRP backup). Is it .IMG, .KDZ or .TOT?
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
I used .img files from "[Guide] Unbricking Solution for LG Nitro HD (P930)" and ADB to flash the .img files into my phone after a complete wipe. I wanted to have a TWRP backup for people to use instead of having to go through the entire unbrick process. All they'll have to do is put the backup file into their TWRP backup folder. I've done all the work of getting rid of the AT&T stuff and disabled the LG auto update. This is a debloated pure stock backup. I really like my phone now. Was having too many problems from CyanogenMod. I used to be a must have "bleeding edge Android" guy, but now I just want my phone to work without having to reboot it twice a day.
I'll upload the file after the 8th and the forum mod can add it to the repository list.

The sole purpose of the unbricking guide IS to install recovery since LG's kdz installer technically unbricks your phone. So IMO it defeats the purpose of your TWRP unless you want an alternative to doing a factory reset. One question: Have you installed one of the stock versions of ICS and did you also have stability issues? If you did you probably have one of the early p930's that had hardware problems. If that's the case you are better off with Gingerbread.

No, that's the point. I don't like Android 4.x.x The problems were lousy cpu and ram management. After reboot my phone would be fast and responsive. But after a few hours, the lag was terrible. Even after shutting down apps that auto launch the lag was still bad.
Now that I have Gingerbread back on it with all AT&T bloadware and some LG stuff deleted, my phone is not lagging and I've had it on for 3 days straight, no reboots.
I didn't come on here to banter about which version of Android is better. I just wanted to help those who are looking to go back to stock Gingerbread without a large hassle to do so. All people will have to do is put the backup file into their TWRP backup folder, do a phone wipe, then use my backup to go back to stock. Easy peasy!

I personally have found that GB is slow especially with screen transitions and horrible battery life. As far as ICS and lag I have fixed that try out NitroTNT v2. Great battery life and lag free as long as you don't use a ram manager. It has the bloat removed and I get over 12 hours use with over 2 hours of screen time and 2 hours+ of phone use. Try it and let me know what you think.

This is a really good version of Gingerbread, it's working very well for me.
You're not reading my posts. I don't like Android 4 in any version. I'll wait for Android 5 and hope major improvements have been made. By then this Nitro will ready for the recycle bin.

OK its your phone I was just saying I fixed what you stated you didn't like about android 4. If you are interested in having the latest version of GB there is a v10i that was released in January of this year by LG for the p936 that works perfectly for our nitro. This is what I use as my unbricking platform. Just let me know and I will see about getting it to you.

Who's Still Running JB 4.3 On Their N7??

So I'm new to Android and the Nexus 7. I come from the world of iOS. After thinking and thinking then buying a ipad mR then having buyer's remorse because of the price I found the N7 2 at the beginning of the month and was pretty happy with it. The day I took it home it upgraded to 4.4 before I knew what happened. I quickly found a couple of my favorite apps didn't work with 4.4 (then later found that some privacy features I'm very use to in iOS where not accessible) I started reading and proceeded to learn how to unlock the bootloader and sideload stock 4.3 (I hope I used the term sideloading properly). I've been running that for a while and for the most part I love the tablet. I've seen some of those apps have now updated for 4.4 support and I'm considering sideloading 4.4 stock, (I know 4.4.2 is out there but until Google gets with it and gives users the type of privacy control iOS does I'm not willing to move past code that doesn't give me app ops in some form or fashion). For those still on 4.3 tell me why you're still on JB. I'm not looking to start a new flame thread but looking to get good insightful information to help me make my mind up. Thanks.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
Android has several app ops launchers, like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.findsdk.apppermission
You can find them by searching "app ops" on the Play store.
4.4 was a pretty major upgrade, which is why some apps didn't work with it right away.
I don't think any of the app ops launchers work with 4.2.2 as Google has stripped that functionality out of 4.2.2 is what I've read. The question really is do I stay on 4.3 or upgrade to 4.4 now that a few of my legacy apps are supported now. If your answer is no, why. I'm looking for those that have decided to stay on 4.3 and why.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I'm still on 4.3 because I'm running on Paranoid Android; and their 4.4 ROM isn't out yet. You could tell me to use the unofficial 4.4 AOSPA , but I'd have to clean wipe everything, and I don't really want to.
So here I am, waiting desperately for the official Paranoid Android 4.0 build
This one just was updated to work with 4.4.2, it installs itself into system and works fine.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.findsdk.apppermission&hl=en
Requires root, of course.

Dolphin+Jetpack+Modified Flash APK works fine.
Video to explain how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luxqwoxYzxw (NOTE: Jetpack now installs alongside Dolphin automatically for KitKat devices automatically now)
The only reason I'm still running 4.3 is because there are a couple of features that I really like with aokp, so I'm just going hold on and a little longer for a 4.4.2 release from them...

im on omni 4.4.2, but am going back to stock jb because the battery life is better.
Still running 4.3 as not had update sent through to n7 2, device says its up to date and was last checked 19 Nov even though I press check for up dates. Am keenly reading up to see if its worth moving to 4.4 if it ever comes through.
Stuck
I'm still on 4.3 because I can't get off of it. I rooted several weeks ago without a problem, installed TWRP, and when the new updates started rolling out I unrooted. The update always looks like its going to work, all the way up to rebooting only to find that nothing has changed. Many update attempts later, and because I couldn't think of anything else to try, I have tried to restore to stock, factory reset, etc. and nothing changes. Still on 4.3 no matter what!

Try using fastboot to unlock, then wipe the cache, system and userdata partitions. Then there's no reason the stock image's flash-all.bat shouldn't work.
Well update has come through and waiting my install, so the question is do I install it, is the recommendation to install it or not.

Thanks for the advice. I tried lots of strategies, and ultimately, I'm not at all sure what I did, but somehow managed to get the Nexus 7 updated. I sure hope nobody wants me to explain how to do it. because I have no idea.

Stock Lolipop vs CM12 and Kernel woe's

I got a Nexus 7 2013 (32GB wifi) off of reddit.com/r/hardwareswap for $80, and absolutely love it.
Naturally I applied the 5.0 OTA update, rooted it, and installed ClockworkMod Touch first chance I got.
Frustrated by not being able to apply the 5.0.2, I realized that Cyanogenmod 12 was based on 5.0.2 (or at least the latest nightly was) so I figured that was the best way to get the newest version, and would make updating easy after that (cyanogenmod's update tool works great, much easier than flashing updates individually, or hoping a stock ota update will play nice with your custom recovery)
After that my nexus 7 was almost perfect, but I had to get the stock boot animation back because it's way cooler than CM12's.
Finally, I REALLY wanted the ability to double tap the screen to wake it. This is something that I've gotten so used to on my Xperia Z3, and there was a nice way to do it that required Xposed framework, which doesn't work on ART, so that is out. It seems that getting a custom kernel that will play nice with the TouchControl root app is the only way I've been able to find that will let you do the double tap to wake thing.
Anyway I flashed the lastest Franco Kernel and it totally jacked up my Nexus. I had anticipated that and made a backup, and restored to that backup, but that didn't fix the problem and now it just bootloops the splash screen, although I can get into recovery and the bootloader.
So now, I figure I can either try flashing the original CM12 kernel over the broken franco kernel, or I can just re-flash the ROM and start from scratch. I'd really rather not do that, but I may have to. I can't get into the filesystem or get adb to find the device because of drivers, so I'm not sure which will be more of a headache: figuring out getting drivers to work in recovery/bootloader, or setting up android from scratch.
I just realized that it might be easiest to do a factory reset THEN restore from the backup, so I'll give that a try.
All of this got me thinking, is CM12 better than stock Lolipop 5.0.2? I just flashed it for easy updates and to get to the latest version, but what is everyone elses experiences between the two?
Also I'd love to hear of other ways to get the double tap to wake on Lolipop that might not involved flashing custom Kernels. Though I think I might give the ElementalX Kernel a shot, and it looks like that one won't break everything.
Franco's L kernel works with CM12, but if you have problems, just reflash the CM zip. Nothing else required.
I wouldn't use CM12 atm unless you like to test drive stuff, it's too early in development you can encounter quite a few bugs.
ElementalX kernel has the double tap to wake and a few other features. The only issue which is minor IMO is that is you update to the newest nightly you'll go back to CM kernel, and have to flash the ElementalX again. There may be a way around this, but I've only been on that kernel for a couple days now and haven't really looked in to a solution.

I can't say that I have encountered any real bugs, it seems very stable. Early on there seemed to be a battery drain and data connection seemed exceptionally slow at times, these may have been just due to my setup. I haven't had any of those problems for the last two weeks or so. Have you used it? If not why would you discourage someone when you have no personal experience?

Question Opinions about preferred custom roms differences and why do you choose it ?

Wanted to keep a thread for each one opinion on custom roms and why do you choose the rom you are using?
i have tried al custom roms and i always love to flash different ones,
What do you notice regarding stability? performance? battery ? bugs? etc in the rom you are using.
Love to hear all your opinions on this matter.
last time i flashed a custom ROM 10years ago. No need to flash anything since. All factory stock.
All i did for every phone is bloatware removal via ADB
I've only ever used the stock rom since I've had this phone. Using A11, A12 and now A13.
Only 1 annoyances during my time with this phone and stock ROM. ( Camera related blue light bleeding in a very bright artificially lit scenario )
Always stock rom with Root these days
Holy smokes. It's ok to not answer a question if it doesn't apply. Pardon my double negative.
I've been contemplating moving on from to stock to custom, when I came across this thread and thought, well this will be great; several viewpoints about several custom roms, but instead came across a few responses that didn't answer the question that was asked.
It's hard to sift though the roms' threads because, in most cases, you'll see "this is a great rom, everything works perfectly", almost immediately followed by "stuck in a boot loop", "looks like msm again", or "xyz is borked, please fix".
So, to reiterate og's question, what are the thoughts on the custom roms (not stock) for the 1+9pro (not a device from your past)?
Nameless seems to be the most stable out of the custom roms, but lacks more in depth customization. CrDroid and Watchdog are better for customization, but more features usually means more bugs.
I've tried tons of the roms on here and will probably continue to do so as stock OOS just doesn't do it for me. Battery isn't ideal, and aesthetically it's hard to configure to what I like. It definitely works for a lot of people as it has many features and is mostly stable.

I'm currently on stag os 13, beta from october with a pair of important bugs... however probably I will flash another one tomorrow. I have to decide first which one xD
However I would ask you what are the steps now for flashing another android 13 rom, considering I'm on android 13 and I prefer not do a clean install (dont want to do any wipes as I have my phone tweaked and fully oriented for privacy)
Los20 Google free
Without gapps, store and ps apps
been on nameless for about 6 months, no complaints
Running my own fork of LineageOS 19 with features cherry-picked from other ROMs (nothing against them but I don't need the extra 30 fazillion features they offer when a handful of features I want does the job just fine). Once LineageOS 20 builds resume with fixes for some of the major issues in place (see the LOS 20 thread for OP9Pro), I'll be upgrading to the New Hotness (I've already made the necessary changes and tested them on my OP7Pro test phone, I'm just waiting for the all-clear for the OP9Pro).

Oof, that's a tough one. You could *attempt* to do a dirty flash of the rom you're wanting to flash. Although, I wouldn't recommend. I've read that people do it with little side effects, but I've also seen people with lots of bugs.
What I typically do is use swiftbackup for SMS and apps, then just restore those on the new rom. But, depending on what tweaks you've applied, that might make things more difficult. As far as I know, there's not a way to restore everything, especially if the tweaks are specific to the rom. Maybe someone else might know a way?
I kept mine as stock w/root since I got it. Just reflashed and I was blown away with how much nicer it feels. Even with the amount of work I'd done to kill bloatware, background processes, etc on the stock rom.

thanks for your answer mate
I didn't touch anything specific to the rom nor kernel. Only much app config and some processes freezing.
So I will save apps+data with my old friend titanium backup pro, don't know another method to do :/
By the way, I will lose root if I do clean flash or can I save that any way?
I guess a clean flash instructions should be something like this?
Extract recovery package zip
Reboot to bootloader & connect your phone to PC
Double click on flash.bat
Reboot to recovery home page & tap Factory reset > Format data/factory reset
Back to recovery home page & tap > Apply update > Apply from ADB
Now sideload rom using command adb sideload <rom_filename>.zip
Now reboot to system.

Reboot to recovery home page & tap Factory reset > Format data/factory reset
Back to recovery home page & tap > Apply update > Apply from ADB
Now sideload rom using command adb sideload <rom_filename>.zip
Now reboot to system.

Of course, glad I could contribute. Swiftbackup will do data for apps as well, but titanium backup should work too if that's what you prefer.
Yep, there's a couple ways to do it, and that will work. As far as root, you will definitely lose it, but you can either sideload magisk:
- download magisk APK and rename to .zip file
- after sideloading rom finishes, reboot to recovery
- sideload magisk.zip
Or
- follow root guide on this forum
Tried about every rom posted that I can find. A lot of nice roms, depends on what you want for customization. The one I prefer is Xtended. Been back and forth since A11 each one a little nicer. The latest -- v5 is best for me. I always go back to it. Currently on stock OOS13. Not all that bad with little tweaking. My disappointment is the lack of kernel development for the phone after A11. I guess the sources released by OnePlus a mess. Waiting for Ancient to be released. Could be nice.

really appreciate your help man, I had forgotten the steps to do root in only 3 months hahaha, my memory is awesome
I followed the method u mention and worked fine
For my words seems I am a newbie but only old hahahah, don't blame on me. I'm on this world of customization/tweaking phones since the old htc one and the first iPhone, so every day it costs me more as I increase my laziness year every passing year xD

Haha, glad I could help! Memory is my biggest downfall as well, so you're not alone lol
Other backup options I like - tarb and Neo Backup. Swift I don't like because it only stores the latest backup, and the google play tied licensing is annoying when bouncing between various devices.
Used to love titanium backup but it never works successfully for me anymore
