I was watching a review today of Paranoid Android for the i9300 & it looked amazing! I've been enjoying the new TW ui, much to my surprise, so I've been taking advantage of its many new features, but tablet mode was looking so great on the 4.8 inch screen! I've only ever really tested it much on my old Sensation, but the smaller screen with the lesser resolution made it seem not so ideal. I really think it could take advantage of the beautiful bigger screen of the T999! It's so unique and it would give us a whole new way to use our phone. Does anyone know how to port this to our phone? Maybe someone here is friendly with the Paranoid Roms development team? Any ideas or insight?
PS: I've tried playing around with the dpi without much success . I couldn't seem to get the phone to behave as a tablet like with some other devices, and it didn't seem to be very stable after modifying it...
Hello, I too have a sensation and have just ordered the s3. It it a big improvement over the sensation?

Oh God yes, lol! I was using the Sensation quite a bit before the gs3 was released because there's a lot of development & it can be a fun device to play with, but it's not worth comparing to the gs3. I'll probably always keep my sensation because I don't like to get rid of any of my phones, and I'm kind of a phone junkie, but it's been on loan to a friend for a few weeks now. The Gs3 will be a huge upgrade if the Sensation is the only phone you've been using.
It probably will get ported I also can't wait I used it on my galaxy nexus and love the Rom, the tablet ui is amazing and makes thin easier IMO

From what I have heard it should be a pretty easy port seeing as it's based off of cm9/10. I 'll probably give it a try tomorrow and upload a test build for you to try out, but im not making any promises because this week is busy for me.
EDIT: what one would you like me to try JB or ICS?

Well, if your asking what I personally would like, then you freakin" rock sir! I suppose if I were to choose which I'd like to see first it would be a cm9 base, simply because odds are it would be the most stable. A jb build would be incredible, but I generally only flash roms that are fully functional & can be used as a daily driver. I'm not the flashaholic I once was mostly because I don't have the time to be. If your able to get it booting & its stable that would be fantastic! I've personally always looked at PA as a rom that's more for something like the Note, but I think the gs3 is just large enough that I want to run with it & reinvent how I use my primary phone. If we get a 100% functional build, I may never look back, but like I said above, I've never really driven it hard before?
I got it booting but I have no signal wifi works though. I'm no dev so maybe someone can help me.
I have no signal cause it made me lose my IMEI
OK so I restored my Nandroid and I have my IMEI back. My IMEI said unknown in phone settings so im guessing that it was just the roms fault not a wiped IMEI? anyway here are some pics and I will upload the build. Root doesn't work as well as pad control but it's a start. Any dev is welcome to take this and use it to try and make it more functional.

Im pretty sure it's because the permissions aren't properly set for the pad.prop among others. I will have a look at the updater script tomorrow.

Wow Bro, that was fast! I know nothing about developing or porting, but I've just been starting to look into a few threads on the 101. It's definitely nothing that I'll pick up overnight, lol! Maybe if you post the build in development someone will work on it with you? I never thought I'd say this, but TW is running so smooth & has so many nice touches on FreeGS3 that I probably won't flash anything until this is running strong or a super stable Jellybean Rom of any flavor drops.

I love PA! Hope you get some other devs to help you get this fully functional.
Once they finalize CM10, a port of JB PA would be awesome!

+1! When we get PA stable, that will get me away from FreeGS3 to check it out. Every day that I use FreeGS3 I fall more I think love with Red's tweaked TW build! I would run this on any device, there are alot of great features in TW now, & Red added even more. I love the tablet style apps though, they are so much more funtional. If I could keep a TW base, but get tablet mode for all my apps then that would be the perfect rom for me. I don't think that'll ever happen, so I'll have to run PA for a week once it's finished & see which I prefer.

I see a few things that aren't perfect just looking through the zip. Wont know more until i get it flashed but this shouldn't be too difficult.
I fixed ril. But it broke boot.
Ril paths in build.prop should be
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libril-qc-qmi-1.so
rild.libargs=-d /dev/smd0
But somehow that breaks boot.
After a long time staying loyal to the Nexus line I just picked up an S3. Main reason was the 44$ price tag and the fact I could stick a 64GB micro SD in here.
So far I think the phone is ok but WOW does their bloatware make the phone sucks. I really want my old Android OS back and wil be reading all the guides I can about flashing it.
Anyone else gotten one? Anyone flashes it yet?

Just root it and freeze/delete the apps you don't need. Stay away from AOSP, you'll get used to Touchwiz and love what it offers over those buggy ROMs.

I may try and find someone in town with a custom rom S3 and try it out. I REALLY miss my CM roms on my Nexus S.
You are right though, there are some great features bundled in the touchwiz OS but a ton I simply want gone. I simply hate the layout of a lot of the included programs like the SMS, calendar and phone.

If it's CM you're after, that's definitely available for your new phone. The device code you're looking for is d2att, i.e. this is the download page you'd want.
Of course, you might want to root the device first (the most applicable image for your device would probably be the Rogers one), and put a new recovery image on there - I suggest TWRP for that, though if you're used to CWM that's certainly an option as well.
Welcome to the wide world of the S3, and have fun!
If you want AOSP / AOKP get Task650 Roms. Hes has a 100% perfect 4.1.2, and a great stable 4.2.1 ROM out. Check in original android. Been using it for a long long time on both the S3's in our household and everyones super happy. Super fast and no crashes or problems. TW was just too slow.
His Rom's are for AT&T.

AT&T's model is the exact same as the Bell, Rogers (and Fido), and Telus
Man you guys are all so welcoming with the wonderful links. Thank you so much.
So im surprised no one else has chimmed in as a new fido owner. I must say their cost is a little high for the phone which might be the reason why. 250$ on a 2 year plan for a phone that is free most elsewhere aint cheap. Luckily for me I got a great deal on it (44$ total cost!)
Does anyone have some warranty related info or links they could send me? I have read about an hours worth and cant seem to gather a clear picture. From what I can tell theres are three methods to rooting this device.
Also, any info on what to backup in order not to brick this phone?
This phone is quite a bit more work than the Nexus I had earlier. None the less I am pretty sure ill have tons of fun!

LMAO. Touchwiz is complete garbage and really slows the S3 down. I used it for a couple of weeks and could not stand all the Samsung bloat and the Samsung replacement apps (phone, messaging, etc.).
Wiped it and I'm running CM 10.1 nightly (1/13) and the phone is a beast now. Super fast, with the best possible UI, i.e. the way Android is meant to be!
Yes there are a few bugs but they're nothing major and at this point CM 10.1 is definitely good enough to be a daily driver. DO NOT hesitate to drop TW crap for CM!
so i've been on GS2 until recently i got GS-3, and after researchign on XDA i noticed GS3 dont have some Kick-ass Roms like GS2. i WONDERr if someone would start porting or making some for GS3 as well for ex. SHOstock rom?? ----freaking awsome, among others..
im not here to offend anyone or their ROMs by no means, hands down on all your hard work--BUT this is just me thinking on GS3 ROM's. im still waiting for a eye catching ROM for my GS3 to root....hopefully someone will bring someone exciting......
once again---those of you who got your roms out--THANK you for all your hard work
so you researched but never flashed any of the roms for the i747? how can you judge if its 'kick ass' or not?
I personally have been using Task650's AOKP since I bough my GS3 and love it. I have tried most of the available ROMs, but AOKP seems to play best with my phone plus it has so many customizations that it is insane. Used his AOKP on my GS2 as well.

Anyone that answers your question here probably isn't personally a dev.. so you're not disrespecting anyone.. but I don't get why you're posting about there not being any "kick-ass" ROMs when there are seriously a ton for our phone and you wont know what is "kick-ass" till you try them out...
I hate stock anything, and TouchWiz even more, so its been CyanogenMod from the beginning for me, and CM 10.1 now for a while. Try out some fresh Android 4.2. Tasty stuff!
1.) No you will not see any sgs2 ports.
2.) You're opinion of whats "kick ass" is more than likely is not what others think.
3.) The touchwhiz ROMs here are probably considered far more advanced than any sgs2 ROM dude. The hardware is totally different and this device is 10 times more powerful. So your statement of whats "kick ass" in comparison to anything sgs2 related is void at this point.
4.) Until you've tried any of the ROMs here's your whole post doesn't really apply nor does it make any sense.
Used a ton of roms, and I literally flash 5-10 roms a day to try them out. I've even made a list of the pros and cons of each roms. Task's AOKP is excellent, and it's actually a ROM I've stuck to for a few weeks. I recommend trying out each one of them and just backup your phone before doing so
Nvm Task weighed in... Now you have to try his AOKP build
NOW see, this really HELPs..........and BAM---i do have to try AOKP rom, i am gona get started to root my GS3--wish me luck

Tasks' AOKP is fantastic. You'll be very happy. Make sure you do your research!
I agree that's Task's rom is great but I personally prefer CM10.1. Both have their features that I like but the private mode on the stock browser is what keeps me on CM.
One thing that CM10.1 doesn't have is a HEX value entry box for the LED notification colour changes. Sure you can use the big colour "wheel" but it's impossible to get that exact colour you want.
The point is, no one ROM has it all but there are still many awesome ones out there that should come pretty close to everything you need. The trick is finding it and the way to find it is to try them out.

Okay so I'm planning on finally upgrading from my Samsung Vibrant(S1) to an S3. I would go to an S4 but it's still a bit too pricey for me. Anyways, I just wanted to know some general tips and such. What is the latest official firmware, some pros and cons of keeping TW, which ROMs should I use, etc. Just any input would be nice! I think I've just about maxed out my Vibrant's potential with it running SlimBean 4.2.2 for the most part, and recently switching over to CyanAOSP. I think it's my phone, but things are still very laggy. So I can't wait for my S3 to come in.
Sorry if this is in the wrong section. First time posting.
You will find out quickly that almost everything here is great. Touchwiz isn't bad on this phone and cm 10.1 has almost all the bugs worked out. So all i can say is happy crack flashing.
Honestly, save a lil more and get the S4. Don't upgrade to last yrs model.
Don't get me wrong, the S3 is a major upgrade from the Vibrant, but I feel like if you have an opportunity to upgrade you should get the very best upgrade available.
Just my 2ยข.

Thing is, I'm in desperate need for a phone currently. My Vibrant is becoming unusable and it'll take me a while to save more money. I'm only 16, and the only source of money for me is an annual thing, which is doing the traditional Lion Dance every Chinese New Years. So, by next year's event, I'm sure S5 will be coming about and my Vibrant will definitely be dead by then. So I'm gonna go ahead and upgrade to an S3 now. I really need it to talk to my gf too, since we're a state away. Thanks for everyone's input about going to S4 though.
Btw, I'm guessing it's not possible, but a T-Mobile S3 can't flash ROMs from the i9300 can it? I wanted to try out the recently released GlamourS4 ROM, but I just realized it was in the i9300 section.. Unless the T-Mobile variant is the same model?

No, do not flash ROMs or kernels from other s3's you will end up with a hard brick!! You can flash ROMs from at&t though.. Verizon and sprint I don't think will brick it, but better stay away..

Latest update is 4.1.2, which has multi window.
Touchwiz is ok, definitely recommend getting Nova launcher. Rooting is simple, plenty of instructions, follow them and you'll be good.
I definitely don't recommend flashing kernels or roms not meant for t mobile. You don't want to end up with a hard brick phone. Especially your case that you're tight on money. You don't want to pay extra for a repair.
From MY PERSONAL opinion. Wicked v10 and Stockorama are fantastic touchwiz based roms. Solid battery life and super smooth.

I can't advise much about AOSP based roms since I just started using one two days ago. I'm on Liquidsmooth 2.5 and it's working great so far.

So 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 are leaks right now? What would be advantages of staying on 4.1.2 until the official release?
Yeah, I've been using Nova on my Vibrant for who knows how long. I love it.
Thanks to everyone for the info about carrier-specific flashing. I wasn't intending on trying it until I got an answer anyways.
So what kind of advantages would I get from TW roms and AOSP roms? I know the Samsung specific things like multiwindow, but what else? Or is just a matter of preference?

I'm not against rooting, but if you're tight on cash, then maybe you should think twice about it. Accidents can happen, you can accidentally flash the wrong kernel or rom and brick your device. It can be fixed, but it will cost you.

The latest official release was 4.1.2 which came out a few weeks ago. It's major improvement imo was multi window. I didn't care about the other features personally.
If I'm not mistaken all AOSP roms are 4.2.2 based.
Advantages for touchwiz roms is great stability. You shouldn't come across many, if any bugs at all. You will have all the gesture features on touchwiz roms. Palm to screenshot, tap to refresh, smart stay, etc. You will have more camera features. Everything should just work.
AOSP have more customization but you will give up Samsung features, downgraded camera imo, and you will likely come across minor issues. Random reboots, flickering issues, etc.
I'm not saying AOSP roms are bad. The community here is great and for the most part there's always a solution. I'm running an AOSP rom and I haven't had any issues so far.
One thing I'll recommend, don't switch between AOSP and touchwiz roms back and forth. You may experience some issues, best to Odin stock from an AOSP rom then flash a touchwiz rom afterwards. It's not difficult, just a bit time consuming.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Touchwiz isnt horrible, I just don't like it very much. Its stable, but to me its too laggy, that and I can only have 4 rows and columns on the launcher for icons. If you ask me, it wastes screen real estate, but there are alternatives to it.
Overall once you get 4.1.2 running on this phone it becomes very very stable.
If you want another launcher, Nova (Prime version is 4$, Go Launcher Ex, ADW are all fine choices. Just be warned that Touchwiz Widgets (Such as the Touchwiz Calendar, Accuweather) cannot be used with those Launchers. I use Nova Prime (With Teslaunread for unread email and MMS counts), and it is rock solid stable, and also has Project Butter enhancements which just make it so smooth its not even funny.
Granted, there are also replacements for those such as the Weather Channel, Weather Underground, Google Calendar (Which is what I use anyway), and tons more on Google Play
The S3 is a reasonably good phone, and the only phone I would actually ditch it for would be the Galaxy S4: Nexus Edition when it gets released, granted the GS4-N is not LTE compatible, and costs full price (650$ from what I hear), but it will be Pure AOSP.
I like my GS3.
Also dont use the stock music player, believe me, its not that good. Buy/download one of these
Poweramp (4$)
N7Player (also 4$),
Winamp (Free, but has a paid version that removes Ads and unlocks a couple features).
There are many other Music Players. As for Video Players, I use Moboplayer.
Also the i9003 is the international model. No rom for the SGH-T999 will work on the i9003, nor will any rom built for the i9003 work on the SGH-T999. In fact, flashing either of them to the opposite will brick your phone.

I think Purple Ferret meant to say i9300, not i9003.

Throwing in my experience with TouchWiz.
The SGS3 is a pretty solid phone, and some of the TouchWiz stuff can get you quite hooked (personally, I like how you're able to flip through the homescreen until you are back at the beginning, and some nice touches they recently included for their file manager like the helix and roll pin scrolling), but it's mostly a matter of preference.
On the other hand, I started having issues with the stock TouchWiz after almost a year of use. It would randomly restart itself from time to time, then all controls became unresponsive after start-up (volume buttons, home button, touchscreen and the soft buttons); only the power button was working. I only got it working again after I did a clean wipe and restored an older backup. Which then inevitably led me to check out custom ROMs.
I never had an Android phone before this one, but my brother had been tinkering with his Vibrant for years now. He was the one that helped me root my SGS3, and he stated that it's a lot easier to do things now than it was back when he first started since there's an app for just about everything needed. (Just to give you a perspective)
Besides, the instructions around here are pretty easy to follow.
And yeah, if you are going for a T-Mobile SGS3, only look for ROMs compatible with SGH-T999 (T999) for T-Mobile (d2tmo).

Yes exactly, my bad.
Ask your mom or dad or even family members if you can borrow money to buy an S4. I was touching the S4 the other day at Tmobile and it's so fast and smooth makes me wanted it so bad. I think S4 is better than S3. Go for the S4 I would say.
TouchWiz feels too bloaty and laggy for my taste, so I recommend using CM10.1. The smoothness in scrolling and general navigation of the UI are definitely noticeable compared to even the most de-bloated TouchWiz ROM. Just my 2c.
Isnt ATT usually the first to get it? Why are we last all sudden?
No maintainer so it won't get approved for nightlies. CM requires someone with development knowledge and who owns the device to keep it properly updated before it will accept them into nightlies

That said there are builds out there. I've been running the following build for a week or so and it's absolutely wonderful. Better than any LP ROM I've even tried.

Here are 2 location to get CM13 unofficially for the D850:
https://ci.galliumos.org/job/cm13/device=d850,jdk=OpenJDK7,label=android/
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=44671
It's been running well on mine. The biggest issue has been no functioning GPS.

I'm running the second build and it is good so far, except for the odd random reboot or I'll have to pull the battery.
Wow no GPS = no ingress or maps. Pulling the battery might as well be cm12.1

OK so why are there 12.1 nightlies? Where did those devs go? Why do att users always get screwed over?

You know some people get new phones, some people get a life. Some people get sick of hearing crap like this.

AMEN! "Users getting screwed over by devs not doing stuff for free any more". Sigh.

I didn't say it, so I can't comment on the intention of the comment, but I would have taken it as meaning that we constantly get screwed over by AT&T and device manufacturers like LG, both of which are true. We (I anyway) are very thankful for the devs who give us awesome things like CM and other assorted roms and kernels and whatnot - we love you guys. I've had other LG flagships for which AT&T and LG dropped support way earlier than expected, and earlier than other carriers' variants. In some cases they have even promised a certain level of future support then decided later to end development early without comment.
It gets old - we like our LG phones for a lot of reasons, but AT&T and T-Mobile users often get screwed so we have to depend on independent devs. Either we move on to another phone, stick with an old OS or base, or someone creates something awesome. We love the dev community and hope they stay interested, but if they lose interest what are we supposed to do, pay them full-time salaries to port CM 13? That just isn't possible without a lot of organization and large scale funding. If you don't want to develop, don't. You certainly have a right to get frustrated, as do we. So again, I don't know the intent of the original comment, but try not to take it personally, and please don't assume that most users and consumers have any animosity for devs, because we don't - we are amazed by what you all do. If it is glory and being showered with money and praise you seek, you're probably in the wrong field, but thanks for your contributions anyway.

Thanks. Yes, that's what I meant. ATT is the reason why devs don't have ATT phones, even ones that are very open to development. They must not see a point in developing for a device with less already-established devs and less users.
As for my previous questions, I legitimately wanted to know where the devs who had just worked on 12.1 cm went. I just didn't know how the nightlies worked.
Updates for CM13.0 d850 here
Some UNOFFICIAL CyanogenMod CM 13.0 (AOSP Marshmallow 6.0.1) ROM images for d850 are here. I've been building them for about a month and posting an update every couple of days. I hope to continue posting semi-daily updates until somebody at CyanogenMod starts maintaining a d850 nightly.

I've been running your 20160305 for the past couple days and it's been very stable. Thanks for sharing your nightlies.
does GPS works with the latest cm13 nightly?
Has anyone tried running the official cm13 build from T-mobile G3? The only difference I'm aware of is WiFi calling.

What made you go back to stock? (I'm assuming your signature is up-to-date)

yeah, I went back to stock because it was getting harder to find a good working build of cm and I was getting tired of flashing daily so I went to weekly flash and I got tired of that so I did a revert and took all the updates OTA thru at&t to get up to 6.0
I wanted to be able to use android pay whenever I need to.
For a stock base, LG really has everything I need but I still overlay nova prime launcher to clean things up a bit. Its little things like not having to worry about whether or not an app is going to load or crash the entire system. Also not having to worry if a reboot or shut down is going to lock my phone and require a battery pull, which I have not had to do once since going to stock.
In the event that I do go to sell the phone off it generally is more desirable to have stock OS.
Oh also, my wife got a new galaxy s7 so we can do VoLTE calling now =-)
This might be my imagination but the cell tower service seems more consistent with at&t stock os.
Have no need for root and no need for kernels or any of cm's little oddities.
Sometimes I think the maintainers change things in the rom just for the sake of changing something, whether its necessary or not and without regard for whether it might wreck havoc on the entire system stability

I'm on Cricket so it won't let me OTA to 6.0 unless I have an active AT&T SIM. I'm hoping someone at a Cricket store has one lying around that I can borrow. But I get what you mean. Whenever there was a nightly I liked that gave me no problems, I stuck to it like glue I actually gave CM13 a try for a while, today, and it was like butter. But the one thing that don't like losing from LG stock is the "content lock" in the gallery. I haven't seen a 3rd party app that encrypts and locks them down like LG; others just hide it with .nomedia or their app is bulky or they convert it but can't recover images anymore.
Thanks for replying
