No pictures of my sons wedding!! - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This may be covered (I don't know what to look for) but I got a Verizon Note 4 (version 4.4.4) and I just came from my sons wedding where I took a lot of wonderful pictures. I had gotten a 64gig Samsung Pro sd card, and I saved them all to the card. Now, when I try to look at them, there is nothing but a lot of gray boxes with a gray mountain looking thing in the box with a gray exclamation point. I am so very sad. Can anyone tell me what happened to my pictures and if there is any way to get them from the card? I am obviously very desperate. Thank you for any help. :crying:

sounds like they're corrupted. maybe the SD card went kaput?

try to plug the phone into your pc and browse the card. or unmount the card and mount it again.

Or unmount the card and pull it out, then put it directly into a computer using the appropriate adapter(s)
If it did corrupt there are some data recovery programs available if you Google it.

I had problems like this with my Note 3 and my HTC One m8. The issue ended up being the no name 64GB card I was using. No matter how I formatted it or tried to access it, eventually the same thing always happened to my pictures. I went back to my 32GB Sandisk card and did not have any problems after that. I know this really doesnt help you situation but it may sorta explain why... I hope you are somehow able to get you pics recovered....

Thanks for the help but nothing worked. It was a Samsung Pro card that I got new off of ebay. All that was saved was maybe 4 thumbnail pics. I switched that card with the 64gig in my Note 10.1 and that card works fine in my phone. I'm just screwed with the pics.

I am still on Note 3 and just gave up on SD cards I prefer to use device memory. I have access to Class 10 cards 32GB and I have had more than 4 just go corrupt and I treat my phone like a baby...with great care.
I am pissed with SD cards getting corrupt out the blue. I can format it and works fine but at some point in time this happens. So I use internal memory and use cloud like services like Dropbox, etc to keep a backup going like "camera upload"
Hope you find a way get them back...

Chances are you got a counterfeit card.
Had the same thing happen to me. Now I save to the internal card, then export to my computer and the SD card.

Use dropbox auto camera backup and/or Picassa backup. This has saved me in the past, where SD card later gets corrupted. The pictures will still be available on the cloud.

Terry, send me an email to gilbert at kanvaskeepsakes dot com. I might be able to help you revover the lost photos.

Strange SD Card problem

I had a strange problem happen to my SD Card on my SG3. I have a Patriot 16GB class 10 card that I used on my EVO 4G for a almost 2 year without a problem. After when I got my new phone I clean all folders that I no longer needed except my pictures and some applications. Put the card in my SG3 and everything was OK. I was able to copy files take a pictures and everything seems to work the way it should. Last week I was on a trip and during the process to taking a picture I got a message that my card was removed and basically disappear. I reboot the phone and nothing happen. then a little bit later I saw another message that card was found and everything show up again. Then I check do I have all the pictures and most of them were there except on a last one was (when card disappear) basically it was look like that picture was taken a half way. So I delete that bad picture and continue. A day later it happen again but this time when card show up again instead a normal card I have that message in notification bar with a little sd card that it says Blank SD card. then if I pull down and click on it phone is asking me to format the card. I try to mount the card but got the same message Blank card or unsupported file system. Ok so I didn't have at that time my adapter to plug in to my laptop and wait until I got home to try to repair the card.
Here is what I got now and I'm not sure is phone damage the card or card slot on the phone is not good.
I use minitool under windows and GParted as well under linux. Both of them recognize my card as 60 GB Unallocated space (it is a 16GB). when I try to recreate or format both of them said successful but card is not show up. I have to plug it back and then it goes again as a 60GB unallocated space.
Does any one know how to format a 16GB card as FAT32? I mean the settings I have to use to put to get back again this card as a 16GB not as 60GB.
Sorry for the long explanation and thanks for you help in advance.
P.S. I' not rooted and on LG8 update.
Bro,did to trid any other sd?

Windows will format it just fine under Disk Management. The fact that its reading it as a 60GB... I'd bet on the card as bad. I have hours and hours trying to save thumb drives and SD cards. 97% of them had no hope. Sometimes the card reader can act up... but not likely, and the phone's kicking it out too. Try to stick with Kingston or SanDisk even if you have to pay a little more. Yes, Cards do go bad like that.

Thanks for the reply. It is look like that this card is going bad. It kind a surprise me since I didn't have any problems under my old phone. I will play a little bit more to try to repair it but....... looks like will be a lost a time.
Do you think that because it was a class 10 card causing a issue? I saw a couple treads but most of the SD card that people use are class 4.

Probably 1.5 year. I got my EVO 4G back in sept. 2010 and bought the card a couple months later when rooted my phone.
Yeah, like root said, the class wasn't the issue. The different phone might have pissed it off but you really never know. I never liked Patriot myself, but then some people like them. Gotta back stuff up or have it auto upload somewhere.

I do have all the pictures auto uploaded to my DropBox account and all apps I backup on my PC. I just wondering if the card slot of the phone is bad. I have a new 4GB class 4 card. I will put in to the phone, format and try to see if it happen again.
last week suddenly received a message that the card was blank. did everything i could not to format it. finally gave in and tried formatting the sd card but couldn't. had to buy a new one. sounds like yours is going bad as well.

When I first got my SGS3 I used my old card from my OG Droid. I got an OTA update and my phone quit working (I got the "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped working" message). I took the phone back and they asked if I had ever had an SD card in it. I said "Yes, my old card from my Droid." I was told that this is a "known issue" with the SGS3 and that any SD card I used should be formatted in the phone itself. I'm not sure if this is the issue here, but it might be.

[Q] microSD card died

I had a SanDisk Mobile Ultra MicroSDHC Class 6 32GB (formatted FAT32) in my Galaxy S3 with no issues for about a month. Then one day I was at work, unlocked my phone and got a "SD card has been unexpectedly removed" notification. After that the microSD card wasn't recognized in the phone, my laptop, nor my desktop PC.
Has anybody else had this issue?

question is, where did u buy the sd card it might of been a fake, their are multiple sdcards which look good and real but overall are fake due to the ability to operate in heat, so it might of overheated and crashed(died) its a big issue with fake sd cards out there, they usually go out or burnt due to not being able to take the heat of the phone. On normal operate the sd card should be able to take 40 to 45C which make it 90-100 Ferenheit, if its a real SD card it should be able to take more then this and reach upto 65+C or around there.
easy ways to spot a fake is if ure saving files on ure phone and it says u got a class 6 or class 10 sdxc card and its operating less then it should, it crashes on u when trying to open a file or it resets itself and tries to scan again for it. in many cases it will get too hot and burnt out, or it just stops operating out of the blue.

I bought the card from Adorama (a photography focused site) in April. SanDisk is letting me RMA the card (just got that approved last night). I just want to make sure it's not my phone causing the problem. Up until the "unexpectedly removed" error, I never had any issues with it crashing or having to scan for itself again (unlike the class 4 I was trying to test the card slot with right now).

If that's the case have u tried varies card readers or card ports to see if it could be the unit itself..... However if it does out that way, I believe scndizk does back this up with a lifetime warranty if ure sd card does stop operating and then should be able to replace it.

Even so the gs3 should be able to read ure 32gb flawlessly since it's supportive to sdhc, now it does also supports sdxc which is expected from higher performance sd cards to not be able to read or install correctly on the gs3 unless u format to extfat or fat32. Chances are u might have a bad sd card. By default their storage capacity is 32, after that, that's where u need to take does drastic measures. Try formatting it on ure computer, if it doesn't format then ure gs3 should read it, if it doesn't format u already know.
Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying, this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the media scanning process.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card, and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdcardmonitor

32 GB SanDisk Ultra class 10 will not read

This card used to work regularly for about 4 months then one day my phone said it dismounted and it became defective since that notification. I returned it due to the warranty and got a a brand new card from SanDisk. My computer reads it (and I formatted to FAT32) but, my phone refuses to even see it. And yes I attempted to format within the phone in the settings and it doesn't even say its mounted. Any possible suggestions? I tried everything it seems like. Thanks
well what rom and kernel are you running? that helps.
is it only that card or any card?
have you looked for any dirt or crud in the sd card slot. try blowing into there.
are you sure you have the card clicked in all the way? past the point where it springs back?
Here's another suggestion. Load a new rom @asop or touchwiz and if everything but your phone detects it still then you probably have a defective card reader.

There is a thread on the forum about this very issue. Android runs a system thresd called media server and it runs every once in a while. When it is running, it will thoroughly thrash your sd card, by reading and writing. You can notice this behavior when you boot or reboot your phone; your phone is sluggish and laggy for the first few minutes-media server is running, reading the entire contents of your internal and external storage AND writing a new databse of what it finds.
This unnecessary thrashing dealt by the media server results in eventual ruination of solid state memory cards.
You can disable the media server by instaling and running an app called rescan media root. You have to root your phone to use it.

It randomly began to work one day when I inserted it again. But occasionally when I turn on my screen, it says "Preparing sd card". It is a brand new Sandisk card so it doesnt appear to have anything wrong with it physically. It works for now but I'm afraid it may not function soon. I believe Sandisk class 10 sd cards have had trouble in some Galaxy S3 devices similar to mine. Any other ideas?

That's very unfortunate (and really an unforgivable malfunction by Samsung, I think) because there is no way I've seen to regain the pictures. There are a dozen posts like yours on the different carriers individual forums stating exactly the same problem..with no solution. There's many different types of SD cards listed too so it's not the cards themselves, It's the phone doing it. The programs on the internet don't get them back and I believe the actual picture itself is probably corrupted as it's writing to the card. The same thing happened with the note3. There's another post on this forum with a guy who took pics of his SONS WEDDING and it was all lost. I hope I'm wrong, Disneyland is awesome

quick fix for now
Just so you know if you tell the camera to write to phone memory it works fine, you have to then use the stock file manager to move them to card for storage.
I have a feeling it's a security knox thing, hope sammy fixes this soon.

No, it does not fix it.
I copied to my laptop, uploaded to the cloud (dropbox and google photos) hoping that the gallery app is corrupted but none work..
I should have used my words better, the files (pictures) you already took are most likely toast.
You just need to set camera to phone memory in the future to get NEW good pictures.
I have problem on my Samsung Evo sdcard 64gb, it is 100% working good on my Huawei P8 Lite but when I transferred it to my Lg G Pro 2, it says corrupted.
Fyi, i gently removed my sdcard then transferred it to my G Pro 2 then after that, it cannot read and says corrupted or unsupported file system, which is not true because G Pro 2 can support 64gb sdcard.
Pls advise how to fix this without reformatting.

[Q] SD Card Issue (Yes, still not solved)

For the longest time, I have been unable to use my 128GB Sandisk MicroSD card properly with my GN4. I have tried SD card fixes, foldermount, and messed with the platform.xml file as well. What I used to do back in the days of ICS/Pre KitKat 4.4.4 was take the SD card and plug it into my computer (via SD card adapter) and transfer the files I needed directly since it takes a while longer if I connected the phone to the computer. I can still transfer files to the microSD card if I plug it in, but they are not able to be read. This is starting to piss me off as I have a lot of music that I would like to store on the card. Anyone have anything else they can suggest?
I used foldermount last week - Some of the music files work properly, while some don't play and I get the message "unable to play this file."
I bought this card brand new and I'm hoping it's not "a bad card"

I also use a 128gb Sandisk Card, the "ultra" I believe. I never had a problem with it, I just came from the Note 3 and put it in the Note 4 with no issues. Is yours the "Ultra" also?
Maybe a bad card. I got 3 fake ones on eBay before I got a real one. I flipped out on the sellers and reported them. Each time I got a bad one I spent hrs copying data over to the 128. I would copy over around 20 gb, and another 20 and so on. When I went to look at the files that I had first put on there they would be gone. There are programs u can download for free. Just Google how to tell if sd card is fake. A fake card is really a 2/4/8/16/32 card changed to look and act like a 128 and once it hits it's limit that u don't know what that is, the earlier data that was put on the card, disappears.
Here is a link for a program I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730285
This happened to me back in Oct/Nov when note 4 was launched. I ended up paying $120 on eBay for SanDisk's highest r/w 128 gb card.
The first seller claimed he didn't know they were fake and promised to stop selling them if I retracted my bad feedback as it was the only bad feedback he had ever received. Once I saw they were removed from his selling list I retracted the feedback. The second and third sellers I was not nice to, did not even have to send them back the pos card. My response was something like refund my ****ing money now for selling me this fake ****ing sd card. Ten minutes later both had gave me my money back. Assholes. After I got a good one I had contacted the first seller again and explained how much trouble I had and the scam artists there are on eBay. I feel that he was genuinely sorry and had no idea. He also stopped doing business with who he was getting the fake cards.
This good card has been great, note 4 32 gb internal, 128 external, both full, zero problems.
Plug it into your computer and check if it's formatted correctly (fat32 vs NTFS). That might solve the problem. Don't quote me, but I think it needs fat32.

Yes it does need to be fat 32.
Also if is fake, u might format it, move data, insert in phone, and it says it's not readable and needs to be formatted.
Yes mine is the ultra version as well (in red letters on the micro sd card)

the two options are exFAT and NTFS. I formatted on exFAT and it seemed to be working just fine until today.
So I use my sd card as direct storage for when pictures are taken. I was at dinner today and took pictures of the food we ate. All of a sudden when I go to the Gallery, I see a black and grey image with an exclamation point for the pictures taken at dinner with the exception of one. I am wondering whether Samsung/Google is releasing updates that put the phone back into the main issue of not being able to R/W to the external sd card? I don't know what else could be the reason. I also tested the card to make sure it wasn't fake. SO DAMN FRUSTRATING!
Shouldn't have to format it. Already exfat when it comes. If it's real, contact sandisk with pictures of the card and it's serial number and a copy of the receipt. They will replace it.
