Hi everybody,
I updated my M8 with the newest firmware OTA (3.33.401.6) and wanted to root it, in order to regain full access to the SD card. I managed to unlock the bootloader with HTCdev but I can't convince it to do S-OFF.
Neither can I lock the bootloader as it seems. An attempt to re-flash with the OTA did not come to an end, as the device stopped with the red triangle on black screen.
Does anybody have an idea, how to proceed? I don't need a custom recovery or ROM, just have it rooted. Is there any possibility to root it without flashing custom recovery/ROM? Before update I had it rooted with sunshine and all went fine.
Thank you.

Hello,
My UK Vodafone branded phone has been rooted with custom recovery installed. Its still s-on.
I searched XDA and getting some mixed information hence I decided to open a new topic to get so answers.
I would like to achieve full STOCK without flags.
In case of a warranty claim I believe I need to install stock recovery, unroot and lock the boot loader. However locking boot loader again - will create RELOCKED message instead of Locked. Which is still not good for warranty claim.
In order to removed RELOCKED I would need to get S-Off and modify flags manually via commands. However having latest FW OTA installed it is not possible to get S-OFF (according to my knowledge). Having said that it will not be possible to remove any flags such as relocked so basically I'm stuck.
Please correct me if I'm wrong here or give me so hope
Thanks for your help.
All correct sir.
Hope you say ?
Sunshine should be updated soon and it should handle latest firmware
a bit disappointed
did not know that rooting will invalidate warranty for good
Hi all
Im unbranding my O2 UK locked M8 to an unbranded UK one (with offical Htc 501 rom), so Ive done quite alot of reading around and followed guides
- Ive SIM Unlocked my device
- Ive successfully unlocked bootloader through HTCDev using Adb
- Ive installed and am running TWRP 2840
- Ive rooted with SuperSU
From what ive read.. AM I Right in thinking the next steps are:
S-Off and SuperCID with Sunshine (Firewater is no more)
Install Stock 1.54.401.10 through TWRP
Install Stock Recovery
Reboot
UPdate OTA to 501.
Any advice guides or help will be greatly appeciated.
Cheers all
1. S-OFF
2. Change CID to HTC__001
3. Flash 4.16.401.10 RUU
4. Done, no more o2 gumpf!
Thanks for the guide, I installed Sunshine 284 (latest, but it says that its not compatible with my device yet and theyre working on it,
My device is running LP 501 from O2, so maybe I need to wait for SDunshine 3.
Oh well
Ive done a factory reset and Ill just use the phone until SS 3 comes out.. or is there another way to S-Off from LP 501.
What effect will Factory reseting at this point have have...
I can still see SuperSU in my apps, but Sunshine app has gone..
I also assume the bootloader unlock is a permanent thing, so I just pickup where i left off ...
S-Off
If you're on 5.0 now then you'll have to wait for SS to be updated, hopefully it won't be too long! A factory reset now will just reset the phone, nothing else. And yes, bootloader will remain unlocked unless you lock it again

Click to collapse
Cheers. I did try the last firewater update, but adb reboot, just restarts the phone. I was thinking of manually getting into fastboot then taking it from there, but didnt want to chance a brick
Ill just wait for SS 3
Do you know.. since rooting und unlocking the M8... its running better than it was, faster and smoother...
Hello everyone,
I'm not new the whole rooting and installing recovery/kernel/roms. I've always had a Galaxy S phone. Though this is my first time having an HTC phone since the first ever android phone launched (G1).
I have the boot loader unlocked, I was just wondering what does s-off get me ? I can install TWRP and root it through the recovery, but after that it sometimes takes ~15 minutes for the phone to boot in, is that normal ?
Because of that, I went back to stock and left it that way. Firewater doesn't work with my phone. I also know I can sound incredibly cheap right about now, I don't want to pay $25 for s-off.
So where do I go to after unlocking the boot loader ? I want to use THIS ROM, but is it 100% necessary to have s-off ?
Thanks in advance.
My bootloader is unlocked and my phone rooted. I don't have S-Off. Follow the HTC steps to unlock the bootloader.
It been a long time.. Well maybe 3years since i been on xda. I still remember how to root and flash this n that n etc... But yesterday i wanted to get started on flashing my verizon m8 onto a rom. Yeah little complicated. I tried everything to unlock my bootloader i keep getting the 172 error. Still considered S-on, So i just left that alone and tried to go #oldschool. I tried to update using htc sync manager. But I had to leave and go to the store. Left this on the computer to finish updating. came back 20-30mins later its on a black htc screen with the green line across. So i thought it was just finished But my computer had been frozed for 10mins. (ive checked the time) but Now it gotten bricked. i can only boot into hboot... Fastboot... And ruu.. But not recovery... I Already downloaded the rom, and the latest twrp recovery on my pc. But im still s-on.. I really don't got time to start from scratch and just factory reset this.. And im no longer worried about my data and shxt because i know im eventually going to losed them anyway. So right now its on fastboot. My win7 detects it in fastboot usb. So where do i go from here? Anybody? No worries though :fingers-crossed:
You can't unlock the bootloader on the VZN version by HTCDev.com, you need to s-off by sunshine, then use sunshine to unlock the bootloader.
Unfortunately, sunshine requires a working OS. So first you'll need to RUU back to working stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/general/official-ruu1-55-605-2-t2883845
After that, you will need to root (think kingroot is the mot common method) then you can load the sunshine app ($25 license) to s-off and unlock the bootloader: http://theroot.ninja/
Once the bootloader is unlocked, you can load custom recovery TWRP and flash a custom ROM.
But keep in mind, there are kernel differences between the VZN version and most other M8 versions. Meaning, you will need to either flash a ROM that explicitly states it supports the VZN M8; or you can flash other ROMs, but you will need the proper kernel.
You'll want to read up in the Verizon M8 forum section, as this version has some peculiarities, as I've mentioned: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8
Hey
So i have this phone HTC DESIRE 816 ASIA dual sim and i am so new to htc because this was my dad's phone. As soon as i had my hands on it, i chose to root it and have super user access. I have successfully unlocked the bootloader but the rooting process was not so successful. I had also managed to install twrp recovery.
But now i cant install ota updates because it boots into twrp and not into stock recovery. So i tried to install stock recovery i got from one of htc desire 816 dual sim thread and tried installing it and locked the bootloader.
Now the problem is, bootloader status is 'relocked', phone's software is 'modified' and entering recovery forces me into a red triangle screen deadend.
Help me to overcome this so that i can have my ota updates install again. A step by step help will be great, because i am so bad at this stuff.
Also how do i unlock bootloader again when i have relocked it. ??
Every help will be appreciated..
