I'm trying to figure out what my options are with regards to Wi-Fi and data plans for the Tab 3 T217S that I picked up secondhand. I've read through dozens of posts and hundreds of threads on here and in other forums, and what I'm finding is that there is either no information, or more often than not, conflicting opinions on what is and is not possible. Hopefully someone with development knowledge or personal experience can point me in the right direction.
Here's my devices info:
Software/Baseband version: T217SVPUBNH4
Hardware version: T217S.04
Model number: SM-T217S
Android version: 4.4.2
Kernel version: 3.4.0-1715729
Build number: KOT49H.T217SVPUBNH4
Misc.: Rooted w/TWRP
Really the only thing I want is to be able to connect to Wi-Fi whenever I want (not just at school, home or the nearest Starbucks). It would also be nice to get rid of the previous owner’s info from the status screen (username and phone number). Sprint won't sell me a SIM card because the device is tied to a delinquent account. I couldn't figure out what the Sprint hotspot/LTE hack was supposed to do or how it worked, not to mention the last time I checked it was limited to 4.2.2. I'd love to use the T-Mob Walmart plan, but they haven't updated their devices to KitKat yet, and near as I can tell you can't downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2 because of the locked bootloader (whatever that is). So what options are left? I'm open to suggestions and if needed testing.

Take out the Sim card and throw it away, then go into tarp and do a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvic, then reboot. His info should be gone and you should be able to use a T-Mobile Sim.

I wish it was that simple. I did it again just to be sure, and I get the same results as before. Invalid Sim and the previous owners info is still there. Any other ideas?
Clarification...
Based off everything I have read, the general consensus is that at this time you cannot downgrade from 4.4.2 (T217SVPUBNH4) to 4.2.2 (T217SVPUAMH9 or T217TUVUAML1) at this time on the Tab 3. Is this correct?

I'm pretty sure that if something can be flashed on T989 (T-Mobile), it can be flashed on T989D (Telus/Koodo). I understand that the are just some small differences wrt access to download mode and recovery. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079776
btw, I have a T989D on Koodo

Short answer is yes! Everything you will find here is working perfectly fine on the canadian version.
So go ahead and root/flash away!

I have a T989D on Koodo which I've been messing with quite extensively, and yeah, everything is basically the same. The download/recovery mode linked above is the only major difference.
One thing of note, if you end up messing up the device and need to fully reflash from Odin, the t-mobile stock may not work. I tried over and over to recover from what was essentially a brick (ultra, ultra slow) and it just stayed that slow, even though it did seem to boot and connect and everything. It was totally unusable, however.
I found a different one that did work however, I can't seem to find the post anymore but I'm sure you'll be able to get it if you need it, there seem to be others out there with the same name, but not quite the same filesize. That shouldn't really matter as you'll doubtless go back to a custom rom anyway, the point is just to get you back to something that works.
For reference, the name of the one that worked for me is "SGH-T989_UVLH1_Stock_Odex_zipaligned_signed.zip" and it's 422 MB. This post seems to have a Koodo stock zip as well as the T-mobile one, it's about 100MB less but again, that really shouldn't matter so long as it's Koodo.
Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but I just wanted to let you know that even if you have to recover and some files don't seem to be working, keep trying, because the correct ones are out there! Just may need to search a bit for 'em

A few more things SGH-T989D owners may want to be aware of:
1) This is an excellent resource: [ROM][Stock]T989UVLI4 (4.0.4) ♛ T989DTLLE4 (4.0.3) ♛ T989DTLLG2[ODIN][TWRP/CWM]
2) You might want to search and replace all "T989" with "T989D" in build.prop
" " replace all "TLLG2" with whatever radio your new ROM is using.
If you're on Koodo you might want to assign that to the ro.carrier property
3) If you've got a data plan with you might want to search the web for your carrier's apn info and insert it into "Settings|Wireless & networks|Mobile networks"
Note: This stuff is optional in the sense that your stuff is probably going to work if you don't make these changes. I haven't always updated all this after switching to a new custom rom, but I did notice that I showed up on the Telus network as a T989 as opposed to a T989D on the Koodo network. Really they're the same network but ... I don't know. Maybe I just over think things... I do like the fact that when I plug my phone into the computer or go to the play store or whatever that my phone reports as what it actually is and what radio it uses etc. I don't really care that much as long as my stuff works and I have access to apps that are appropriate for the hardware I'm using. YMMV.
Note2: Most of this info can be gleaned from your stock rom's "CSC" folder and build.prop file. When I have a little more time I'll write this up so its more understandable for those new to flashing Roms. Just wanted to mention that there are a few other tiny, nearly insignificant differences btw the T989 and T989D so that the OP and/or others can address these points if they choose to. At least not be surprised if it looks as though they're using data on a network with a different phone.
Note3: Maybe the only thing that matters is an imei number from your SIM. I don't really know. Be glad to be "told" by anyone that knows. I just know that these things are different even if they don't make a bit of difference in practice.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Hello I'm new to posting on the forums, sorry If I've missed the answer to this question already!
I have a Koodo SGH-T989D that I got in September, before that I was using a non smart flip phone . So I'm quite new to this whole rom business, but even android/ smart phone os in general.
I've been able to flash many roms in the past couple months and have a good understanding of what it is i'm doing. Never had an issue I couldnt fix myself actually, so I've never made an account.
This latest problem has me puzzled though, I've totally lost data connection on my s2x while using any radio. I use SGH-T989D_TLLG2_Koodo_radio but I tried UVLI4 just to see.
However I did change a few things up from my usual routine to flash 4.2.1
1: changed twrp to 2.4.1.0 from 2.2 cwm flashable zip
2: moved all my zips to sd card and formatted internal memory(to eliminate possible issues)
Before this I was using twrp 2.2 and only doing a clean install, not formatting internal sd without any issues or instability.
I've been on [4.2.1 | 4.2.2] AOKP :: jb-mr1 :: build 3 and very impressed with it, except this one issue.
In the thread there is a post that refers to getting data working with koodo, so I think its an apn/proxy setting. I just am not sure where I would have to change these settings.
Just restored a recent nandroid backup and everything works fine.
Can anyone help me out, any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Check here for Koodo APN settings: http://koodomobile.com/en/on/switch2koodo-step-3-c.shtml
Go to settings > wireless and network, more... > mobile networks > access point names > then hit your options button > New APN > enter the details found on the page linked above.
Hope that solves it for you.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Thank you so much, worked right away!
The reason I didnt just look up koodo apn settings is because I had no idea what they were.
And Until now I've never had an issue.
Is this something to do with aokp 4.2 or is it because I formatted my internal storage?
Since mid December I've tried out about 5 or 6 roms just to see how they compared to stock. And all I have to say is wow!
Thank you to all those who make this possible, it really is a great community.
I was on stock koodo rom and unrooted until december because my charge port stopped working after like 3 months...? So I went looking for info and I was brought here, haven't looked back since.
When to check for proper apn info?

Ususally associated with radio upgrades; but rather than get too particular, its good practice to check the apn info after any ROM upgrade. If you think about it, any of the hercules upgrades are going to be the same across the board for any given update. Where they're different is where we want to pay particular attention. In this case, carrier specific information.
First off I'd like to say that I've been attempting methods furiously for 8 hours a day past 3 days, to try and fix this. Making a thread is my absolute last resort. I hate to make unnecessary threads on forums.
So a week ago i was on vacation in New York (I live in Europe), and i bought a SGH-M919 (SGS4 Tmobile unlocked).
I bought it from one of those bogey retail shops with Indians running it. I knew i was getting the correct phone, and when i tested my simcard i was able to make a call with it. And since it's so much cheaper than in my country, i purchased it.
Now here's the deal. After arriving at my own country, i was sending and receiving a few texts the first few days, suddenly the signal disappears and is replaced by a "forbidden" sign.
After investigating the issue i noticed, my phone doesn't have an IMEI number! (and imei SV? is 06)
This is the original device info from when i got it, no rooting, flashing, anything done to it.
Model number: SGH-M919
Android version: 4.4.2
Baseband version: M919UVUFNB4
Kernel version: 3.4.0-540242 [email protected] #1 Fri Feb 14 14:38:35 KST 2014
Build number: KOT94H.M919UVUFNB4
SE for Android status: Enforcing SEPF_SGH-M919_4.4.2_0004 Fri feb 14 14:38:24 2014
Secure boot status: Type: Samsung
Security software version: MDF v1.0 Release 2
Note: The imei sticker is still behind the battery and the imei is not reported stolen.
I've tried flashing CM and seeing, then back to stock, flashing different modems(though i never got one 100% on due to writing errors?), attemting those *#XXXX# codes and nothing seems to work.
The only thing i can think of now is flashing 4.2.2 stock(i read that flashing stock can resurface the imei) since the subforum info of the phone said 4.2.2 is stock for M919 and not 4.4.2, i will download the 2013 4.2.2 stock and edit the thread live.
EDIT: I was able to find the extracted modem from the 4.2.2 2013 stock so i flashed that instead of the whole package in its whole. Interestingly enough, now the IMEI is still "Unknown" But IMEISV changed from 06 to 00 ?
Please help me! Any reply is much appreciated and will be answered at my best so we can solve this issue!
I flashed back to latest stock with no success again...
Nobody has any advice to give? come on guys
I think my last resort after this thread is to contact some repair shop that might have the correct tools for it. I heard if you have the correct device you can write the imei easy as 123.

Discussing IMEI's is a touchy subject here. It appears that you have done most everything one can do to attempt to recover that information, and short of restoring a backup of your efs folder (which you don't have) the only other route would be against the law. How to manually set or change your IMEI can't be discussed here regardless of whether you jacked the phone from some tourist or whether your story is 100% factual and completely legit.

I noticed it's a touchy subject but this was my last resort.
My story is true, however how the shop acquired the phone i don't know. (Wasn't the most official one)
Read a lot about custom devices being able to do so, and i am awaiting response from a repair shop about my problem. Hopefully they will be able to help me!
I will let the thread stay unresolved for a little while more.

Try using smelkusMOD recovery, and find the latest stock rooted (5.07.651.6) posted by me here. There should be no issues with those items. You are unlocked or S-OFF, correct?
To add to what Captain Throwback posted, you have to be on a Sense ROM to use dialer codes, update profile or PRL. Can't do it on AOSP.

Unless an exploit was discovered seconds ago, it will not work. Believe me, when it's finally exploited, the news will be bigger than The Beatles stepping foot on U.S. soil for the first time.
Kind of interesting how it does say it's for our phone. I myself doubt that an exploit was discovered without a whole bunch of people blowing up the threads about it. LOL Who wants to give it a shot?
Based on the Comments I read, Some have said it will work. One person said it failed but another commented & said it would work & he just needed to find the right firmware. I think I will give it a Try this evening when I get home from Work. If this does Work OMG!
ive been flamed plenty of times but i said months ago it wont get root. people dont listen smh

I don't see anything about it being specific to the Developer Version only. It says it's for SM-N910v and doesn't contain the developer model number, SM-N910VMKEVZW.
I do see a disclaimer on the CF-Auto-Root page: http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ that says "If you have locked bootloaders, flashing one of these will probably brick your device..." and it is my impression that the whole reason it's taken a while for a root exploit to surface was because of our locked bootloaders.
Look at the screenshots, that looks like 2 generation old touchwiz. And a random website called androidxda? Doesn't seem like a very reputable site.
The bootloader is locked, flashing CF-Autorooot will not work. This is basic stuff. Also for future reference, this doesn't belong in Android Development section.. take questions to Q&A.

I can confirm that this process works ONLY on the Note 4 Developer Edition. It will not work on the retail version no matter what firmware the user has on his phone because the retail version has a locked bootloader and the Developer Edition has an unlocked bootloader. This process will fail as soon as it tries to replace the stock recovery partition with the custom recovery (TWRP in this case).

I noticed some of what you are saying. I don't know Most of the "Basic" stuff with Android Root Methods. I can follow a Procedure to Root a Device. I don't know if this will work if this wont work etc etc AGAIN which is Why I brought the Questions to the PROS. I did look at some of this Questionably though. I also looked through the Comments & the OP posted 4 days ago that is would Work on Either Edition. I also Commented asking him again but the Comment is not showing up, maybe because it has to be approved before it will show up. The name AndroidXDA actually ADDED credibility to the post for me BUT it also made me Hesitant which AGAIN is why I brought the Question here to the PROS. As far as where I place the Thread IMO my question could go in the General Section or Android Development. I apologize for the Wrong Placement but I didn't put it in the Wrong Place on Purpose. I recieved a PM saying it had been moved & I even asked the Moderator Why because I still dont know why " Will this ROOT method work" is not a General Question or a question about Android Development. These forums aggravate me sometimes everything needs to be so perfect & in its right place according to moderators Opinions & who knows what that might be & if its placed in the Wrong spot BAM your Head is Bitten Off & you are Scolded for being so STUPID to put (blank) in that section. That is ALL. Sorry for asking a BASIC (dumb) Question & Asking it in the Wrong Place. I can only hope the Forum Gods Forgive me.
OOoooops I think I may have Broken another Rule with this Post. Dang It
THANK YOU jpcalhoun

Possible Bootloader Unlock
Okay I'm sure most of us have bricked or soft-bricked our devices. I have done so on the Note 2. I even screwed on my baseband once. This is what I tried to revive the phone.
1. Odin Stock (No luck)
2. Restore Back up (No luck)
3. And then interesting... Rooted a friends phone and created a backup in TWRP, swapped a few files and restored to my phone. (Worked) However, not only did this work, IT CLONED his phone entirely. IMEI, serial no., everything. Pretty much with identical sims- both of our phones would possibly ring when receiving a call.
With that said my initial problem wasn't solved.
So I started looking for a another method.
I found out that Samsung Kies has emergency recovery granted you have Model Number, and Serial No. of the device.
This WORKED. Good as new with exception of new 4.3 Bootloader.
So what I am getting at is...
What if we used the Serial No. of a Developer's Edition device through Samsung Kies to restore a Retail Version???
Theoretically speaking.... Kies would install the Official software for the Developer's Edition to our Retail device, Thus giving us and Unlocked Bootloader.
I only have 4 days left to return my device to Walmart.
If someone is willing to provide me with the serial number of a Dev Edition I will try this immediately.
Cheers!

Cheers!

I'm pretty sure this won't work because the Developer Edition bootloaders are INDIVIDUALLY signed. So, there is no way you can unlock the bootloader on a retail version...there is no Samsung "signature" for that bootloader.
Thanx for the clarification. Absolutely makes sense.
Is the SM-N910V a developer edition?
Just got one in the uk. My EE Sim works but no data, so I was gonna root it, then flash a eu rom on it. It's on 5.0.1
Thanks
Only if you bought a Developer Edition straight from Samsung......if it is a retail model it has a locked bootloader. ...so no flashing because you can't install custom recovery. Only root is temp root that goes away with reboot.
Sent from my SM-N910V / VZW Note 4 DE / Factory Bootloader Unlocked / Rooted / Custom Kernel-ed/ TWRP 2.8.7.0.trltevzw

You should be able to edit the apn settings to get data to work.
My insurance has sent me me a brand new unlocked note 10 plus when I am on att. I'd like to flash to att firmware to regain some functionality . I do have a provisioned att sim and IMEI. If someone can walk me through it and answer my questions I would love to tip you or donate to xda, whichever is preferred. I tried searching but there is a lot of info to wad through and I want to make sure I'm on the latest version as well.
In addition to how to do this, I was wondering how do future updates work? Would those have to be manual as well?

You have a few different threads on this, it would be helpful to keep your posts on this in one thread.
The way to use Odin and flash firmware is the same as the link below. The only difference is the firmware you will be using (for that you will need to look for the correct one, but your getting help on that in another thread I saw).
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80074891&postcount=1
And when adding files to the correct spots it's not that hard really. When you download the firmware and extract it you will find individual files that start with letters like "AP" "BL" "CP" "CSC"... you just put those in the correct spots in odin. Just be sure to do a factory data reset before and after flashing the firmware. Doing the FDR before will remove the FRP lock. Doing the FDR after will ensure that things run smoothly and that you will be able to download OTA updates.
The appdata will be the harder one to find, you may need to ask if someone can post that here on the forum.
But let me ask... Is this because you don't have things like VoLTE, WiFi calling, etc? If this is the case then this won't work. AT&T uses an IMEI whitelist that allows only phones that they have sold to be provisioned for those features. Unless your phone is one that is on that whitelist then you will not be able to get those features.
Some people have tried using an old AT&T phone, activating it and then swapping the sim (or something similar)... But this doesn't always work or it doesn't work for very long. I have spent a lot of time on the phone with AT&T over this subject, and they won't budge one bit.
