I've been reading and reading and I'm slowly learning more about rooting and so on, but I need some help understanding how to upgrade to Lollipop safely. I'm an ex-iPhone user, so please be gentle. Instead of asking a billion annoying questions throughout the forums, I thought it might help if I summarized my situation and asked my questions in a single thread. Hope this is an acceptable approach.
Below is info about my phone, software and what I've done so far root wise.
* I have an 32gb LG G3 with AT&T - I'm in the US.
* I'm running Android version 4.4.2
* Kernel version 3.4.0
* Build number KVT49L.D85010d
* Software version D85010d
* I rooted using 'towelroot'
* I installed 'Busybox', doing nothing more than just installing as instructed.
* I installed the 'Root Browser' and disabled all bloatware using a thread here on XDA (super improvement in performance overall afterward)
* I've installed and running 'Nova Launcher'. I've made various changes to the 'Look and Fee', eliminating all animation and other visual effects. (This too improved performance overall)
* I've converted the (This too improved performance overall)
* In 'Developer Options', I've set 'Window animation', 'Transition animation', and 'Animator during scale' to 'off' (This too improved performance overall)
* I've converted my runtime framework to 'ART'
* I have installed Greenfy, Advanced Task Manager & Clean Master to help with the obvious memory/space/task management.
* I have the paid version of Titanium Backup and I've backed up my apps, userdata, etc.
The performance and battery life of this phone has come a long way since making all of these changes. I'm very happy with it now.
So now Lollipop is coming soon or may be here already?
* When going into 'Settings' and 'Software Update', it says there is a new AT&T software update available. It's 163.MB in size. What is this?
Not sure, but I don't plan to find out
With all of the above said, my questions are:
* What guides or process should I follow to update to Lollipop?
* Will I lose everything?
* Is this recommended to update and start from new?
* Am I missing anything?
* Should I install anything else?
* Should I be concerned with 'bump', 'twrp' and these other common apps/tools?
Thanks in advance for helping me out. I just want to be sure I don't brick my phone. I'm a very technical and geeky dude and I feel I've gotten pretty far at this point by reading a lot, but the wealth of information, methods, etc. on upgrading/rooting have me a bit nervous to do anything further.
Thanks! :fingers-crossed:
Rule of thumb...
DONT UPDATE UNLESS YOU KNOW FOR A FACT THE UPDATE IS ROOTABLE.
I've seen one person say he was able to root again with purple drake on google+. That's it. One guy. That's suspect at the very least. The timing of this update is odd also. It could either be an update preparing for lollipop with various system optimizations or it could be "security enhancements" (Read: Patched root and bump exploits). I'm not taking the update. There's really no reason to. Even if it does have some updates that improve the device functionality it would be barely noticeable. In fact the only thing I would notice would be the aux cable bug. Even IF they fixed that it would still be fixed in lollipop and Dev skin1980 said lollipop patched root exploits so he released a patch to keep the rootable KitKat boot image. If you're happy with the device, wait. Once lollipop is released for d850 there will be a patched version released shortly after. If root is important to you (obviously it is if you're using greenify, TB etc) then wait. Rumor has it that the lollipop bootloader cannot be downgraded. You'd be boned if you did the ota.
Thanks, BreakingVZW. I suspected this. Thanks for confirming.
Question: Do I have everything I need to handle the Lollipop update/install when uploaded here on XDA?
Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

Once they release the rooted version of lollipop that is patched for bump all you need to do is flash it via twrp. You're good to go if you're rooted and have twrp.
Thanks! I've been dying to ask for a SITREP on 5.0 for 850, all the 855 threads are making me jealous. Beers to the first Dev to cook up a daily, stable version!

OK. Question about being rooted and 'bump'
Do I have to do anything right now like install twrp? What difference is that app compared to busybody? Not the same?
As for bumping, is this something I have to do or flash to enable? When should I do this?
Thanks again for answering all of my questions.

Twrp is custom recovery. Bump allows custom recovery to be flashed so we can flash roms. You'll need twrp if you want to flash rooted Lollipop

CURRENTLY, the only way to get TWRP onto an 850 is via flashing bump. Then flashing TWRP over stock recovery.
Ah ok.. Thanks for clarifying. I'm sure there is a thread or two around here that will help with this?
Would this be an appropriate method to restore to stock and prepare for the Lollipop update?
In another thread I saw someone say they used a combination of LG backup and titanium backup to restore.
Thoughts?

No root

This ROM is awesome, but I'm having an issue with the root access. Surely something Im doing or missing. Stumproot says the phone is rooted already but the SuperSU says "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it." It mentioned that if I upgraded to Android 4.3 you may need to manually re-root, but its rooted as far as I can tell. The WiFi tether is working perfectly. I am on Android 4.4.2. Apps that require root access like "Disable Service" confirm no root access and the need to update my SU binary. How would I do this? Do I need a flashable zip (I found one on a HTC One thread but flashing an SU binary from another phone concerns me) or is there something I'm missing? Thanks for any help.

I am having the same problems. I read in the thread that you have to flash the root with the updated supersu? maybe. But i don't want to do this b/c i just finished transferring my data.
I do believe in the second or so part there is the super su zip you can flash without issues.

ZVE OTA available, currently on ZVD Affliction ROM, What To Do??
I currently have a Sprint LS980 (LG G2) and about a month ago, I flashed the final release of the ZVD Affliction ROM and have loved it, other than a few annoying bugs, but otherwise it is great. I just saw the notification that an OTA update is available and after checking online, it is the fresh ZVE release, that has a few new features. My question is, for all those that have the ZVD affliction ROM currently, have you attempted the ZVE OTA? What happened? Or should I just disable the notifications and ignore it for now? Thanks guys
P.S. I know I have a fairly low post count, but have been reading the forums for a long time and am very knowledgeable and skillful when it comes to android and coding

Don't take it. In sprint general g2, I believe, autoprime has the zve update if you have yourself back at stock with no change. Or an anonymous source gave him a made zve tot. Which works.
When I can, hopefully sometime this week. I'll see if I can pull system and put a rooted zve base out.

How does the black screen usually last. Mines is 15+ mines with nothing but my LED changing colors. Is this common or is there a issue with my download?

Reading through this, mip67 Is a data issue. Try updating your profile, prl. If that doesn't work contact Sprint to verify your phone info.

I've updated everything and they reactivated my phone.
Still didn't fix the problem.
I might try a tot restore to the ZVE since the mip67 might just be my phone.
Something keeps messing with enabling/disabling my data when I go 3g or roam.
Thinking it is the LTE tweak in the rom.

So LG announced the G3 will get updated to L soon, but i am rooted and have xposed installer on there. I use it for stuff like GEL settings and Snapchat tweaks. If i upgrade to L, will i regret it or are there alternatives to xposed?

I upgraded already to Lollipop. Before that I didnt use root or anything . I dont need it . but to be honest this first update of Lollipop is not something awesome . just some graphic enhanchements, add user function , notifications in the lockscreen ( ok thats cool ) . More Lollipop updates will follow with more awesome stuff on it . But now I dont know if it worth it for you to lose your root etc . I read somewhere though that they are working for rooting the lollipop and will be available during the day .
Go for Lollipop:
- ART vs Dalvik (much faster - 1.4 GB Ram free)
- Notification from Lockscreen
- User management
- Smoother ( 0 lag - even with facebook that needs a octa-core 5.0 Ghz CPU to send a message )
- Material Design
Also if you want to wait usually LG will land several builds in the next month with updates but for the moment its as good as it gets.
Update bro! Lollipop is amazing!!

HAHA
I would say that there is no need to upgrade to L right now. I suspect that LG wanted to get out 5.0 really quick and the LG UI is not yet ready for the material look of 5.0, so most likely another major update after this one will come in a few months. At that time I expect the LG UI will be better integrated with the feel and look of 5.0.
Aside from that there could be some hidden bug gems that I would like to avoid, so I will let others test this build before I update to it. Don't know if this makes sense to some of you but this is how I see things.
I upgraded to lollipop and i won't go back to kitkat..upgrade to A20 and you will see how smooth lollipop is ..the thing i liked most that you can add lg stock widgets to third launchers ..and when you install google now launcher it looks like nexus 6 launcher
I think this thread would fit better at the Q&A section.
Anyway, the only thing that could stop you from updating is xposed framework. For everything else, it's worth.
Bump! works on Lolipop?
Noob question here :fingers-crossed: Would I have to un-root to upgrade to Lollipop? If not, is un-rooting recommended before upgrading?

Wow go easy on lollipop. Any way think twise before you go there.
Perhaps check S3v3ns thread androidnow 3.0 lollipop 20A. Dont flash that lollipop ota. Use some custom made lollipop so that you dont get stuck in lollipop land for good.
Ok. So because I'm rooted, I should look to upgrade only using some sort of a custom packaged version of Lollipop from the forums here?
I'm sorry, I'm an old iPhone user and the process is to unjailbreak, upgrade and then jailbreak again.

Just hang around on the forum and some kind contributor will allways share latest lollipop version.
Othervise there is guides how to extract the official updates (kdz) and make it harmles to flash.
Latest lollipop is as of now ver 20A and there is at least two rom cooks witch have released lollipop for twrp flashing.
Read the threads. Be observant if you try to go back to kitkat. You have to flash the old modem in that case.

Quick Circle Case App Not Working in Xposed ROM
Hello,
I tried to install the Xposed version of this ROM twice and everything seems to work perfectly, but the quick circle app is not working (after I download and enable it from the play store). Your initial lollipop ROM has no issues with the quick circle case app and works right off the bat. I'm new to this, so I'm probably doing something simple that is wrong, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
The one bad thing is that quick circle does not work alongside xposed as of right now.
Stock ROM for Rogers / Bell wanted
Hi All,
Does anyone have Lollipop Stock Rom for D852 devices? I bought one unlocked D855 from ATT....rooted it and changed build version to D852 and flashed it with KitKat from Rogers stock rom (non-rooted). it works very well like a native D852 device...I use Rogers SIM. The reason I did this because AT&T Rom only came with imperial system and it didn't even offer option of changing from F to C for example.
Now Rogers/Bell releases Lollipop OTA updates, my device didn't receive update from either carrier. Can someone post a download link for D852 Lollipop stock rom from Rogers/Bell? I can't use rooted rom in this post b/c GOOD for Enterprise didn't like rooted rom.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers!

Thank you for your quick reply, but unfortunately, when I used the Texdroider DPI app you suggested earlier to change the dpi to 640 it did not resolve the issue as I still can't get the circle app to work, I tried to uninstall and reinstall the quick circle app and rebooted, but to no avail.
I thought for sure this would fix my issue as it made sense to me, but no luck. Thanks for the amazing ROM anyway.
On a side note: is there a way for you to debloat your original Lollipop ROM so it is just like the one running Xposed?

Good point, The reason why my Xposed version is the way it is, that was the way I used it. dont have a flip cover case so took that out. I used third party apps for clock. messenger etc. I can have a bloated Xposed for sure when I get the chance. With that said. I believe one of your issues was the app didnt play nice with Xposed framework. keeps forceclosing.

Here are the steps to upgrade stock KitKat to stock Lollipop on Bell/Rogers D852 devices. It doesn't wipe the data and will do in-place upgrade (like OTA update).
1) download Bell's D85220C.KDZ ROM from here. using the link from the previous post.
2) follow instructions in this page, download LG Flash Tool 2014, then refer to the screen shots to flash your D852 to stock Lollipop ROM.

I just came to my first LG about a week ago after HTC EVO series, then S3, Note 3 and 4. Right now, I would recommend stock rooted, with SkyDragon kernel untouched. I froze about 67 elements, use xposed with gravity box, greenify, and a few other modules. On T-mo 10r, and tried several AOSP/CM/PA based, as well as a modified stock. It seems to me that until the official 5.02 official image is released, we are stuck with new problems with lolli, and old problems with old stock based. Best to setup what ya got the way you like it for now. Don't know if this is applicable to you on cricket, just sharing my experience/opinion. Good thing is that even full stock LG is around 700Mb smaller than Touchwiz. Just had to deal with locked bootloader for the first time in a while. Good luck!:good:

It seems to me that until the official 5.02 official image is released, we are stuck with new problems with lolli, and old problems with old stock based. Best to setup what ya got the way you like it for now. Don't know if this is applicable to you on cricket, just sharing my experience/opinion. Good thing is that even full stock LG is around 700Mb smaller than Touchwiz. Just had to deal with locked bootloader for the first time in a while. Good luck!:good:

thanks, good advice. My phone came with illusion and its quirky but fast on Lolli. I'm glad recovery was already on it so i didn't have to go through your unlocking.

I've been using Moto and samsung phones for a long time. I've become very familiar with sammys odin and loaded and modified many roms.
I just got the LG G3 851 (TMO) phone and have it running on cricket wireless. Did some research and have some questions if you can help out.
1)Can i flash 855 (international) roms?
2)No official Cyanogen roms but a couple CM based ones seem to be out there. Anyone use it as a daily driver? Known major issues? camera, wifi, sd card?
thanks

Firmware is not compatible. You will brick your phone.

All the G3 variants have slightly different internals, so no, flashing anything that specifically doesn't say it will work for 851 is very bad and will give you a pretty new paper weight. The cyanogen site should have 851 on it to download.

Never used Trickstermod, so I can't tell you how it works on the G3. I know it's not on their official support list, but that doesn't mean it won't work either. No reason you can't install busybox if you are rooted.

Yes. Make sure you do a full backup (make sure your backup has EFS) Then you can also just flash back to your backup.

Flash SkyDragon kernel, and use paid trickster, set according to OP kernel forum. I have 67 elements frozen via Titanium, use greenify, and SkyDragon on stock rooted. Get 30-64 hours depending. YMMV :good:
Hey folks I've just now upgraded to this device and have been a dev for write some time now but mostly for HTC. My firmware and kernel are predated may of 2015 so I'd like to get suggestions from users that have had experience with the s6. What I'm looking to do is sim unlock, root, run twrp recovery, and eventually build roms for this device. So where should I start, take the update first, then sim unlock, root, & recovery, or do all of this now before I update my firmware using the ota? I've read that we can access root with 5.0.2 & 5.1.1 but what's your opinion? I would rather not trip my Knox but it's not a deal breaker if I do, since I own my device. Thanks in advance for your input. Oh and I'm not a noob and have read all the threads here. It's just a little confusing where to start since the device has been out a while now. You're all ahead of my game a little bit. Lol

Just do it all now. The 5.1.1 update isnt huge.
Will I just have to flash the updated firmware and rom to get the 5.1.1 if I do it all now?

Just updated today. It is an excellent guide.
Well an update here. The build that came with my device was not listed anywhere as rootable or unlockable. What I did find was info stating to update my device to get a newer version that would be workable. After that update my device still had a version that nobody could do anything with yet. Looks like I'll just have to wait it out or get another device before my 14 days are up.

I have traded my s6 for the note 5. I was hoping to be able to support this device in the future, and still may, but my gf has the s6 now.
