just got a small ota today... what was it?
Stock note 2, (no longer rooted/aosp'd). It is up to date with 4.4.2. Now... last night I did a full factory reset, but I do those anyway every other month or so, just to keep things tight and fresh.
I can't tell a thing that this ota did.

I got it too, though I haven't applied it. I'm rooted and running a custom kernel and Clockworkmod recovery, so I was surprised to see the update come through. Now I guess I'll have to look at that stupid icon until my Nexus 6 arrives, as I don't dare apply it and risk losing root.
DO NOT apply this update until someone who knows what they're doing tells us what it is. It's 93mb, and after I applied it on 4.4.2 rooted, I couldn't get past the Galaxy Note II screen. It would freeze at a black screen after that. I had to apply the 4.4.2 firmware again to get the phone to boot. After it booted and i was completely unrooted, I tried the OTA update again, same result, it wouldn't boot past the Galaxy Note II logo screen, just went black and froze, so again I flashed 4.4.2 and rooted the phone.
Not sure why it wouldn't flash when I was unrooted but maybe it has something to do with KNOX being disabled on my phone from SuperSU.

Forgot to say after that I completely disabled the ability for the phone to update. It actually did it without my permission which pissed me off.
Weird. I unrooted back when kitkat came out so I could have working tap and pay for Google wallet. When I applied yesterday's update it worked perfectly. Whatever it is, it's invisible to a stock phone.
Btw, I too am waiting for the the nexus 6 I preordered last night.

Tap and pay works with root. Weird that an Ota came out for this device now.

Just got this update as well. I am a unrooted phone(never rooted this phone yet) not sure what the ota did though. maybe security update or something back end with att
Ugh. Tapped too quickly and applied the OTA on my rooted phone. Phone won't get past the boot logo. Shuts off. Dammit!
Any options other than wiping and starting over?
Sorry should have been more clear. Tap and pay does not work with aosp roms, which you need root to flash.

A small update from att suddenly
Hello Devs,
I am a Galaxy Note 2 user (ATT SGH i317) and i have recently rooted my cellphone and i was wondering what i should do to install OTA updates. I got an OTA update and while trying to install it my teamwin recovery boots up when the phone is being restarted. So how do i install the new updates. Please help.
what did you do to return to stock?
GN3 rom
I went to downloadandroidrom.com website to download the stock recovery but they have all stock recovery except ATT. so i am still looking for a website to download stock recovery for att and once you have it flash it using twrp and whie restarting just press volume up + home + power key and when the phone starts release powerkey while still holding the other two keys . this should completely get rid of twrp and install stock. but of you have a link to get the stock recovery for att please do post. i would appretiate it.

nvm, I reread the instructions and realized that I was warned that this would happen.... after advancing the date 1 day as suggested everything worked flawlessly.
I have posted a fix for those of you who got bricked by this update: see http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...t2939649/page2. I give detailed instructions on how to fix it.
Please spread the word.

tl;dr I have a blue LED showing up in the top left of the phone and nothing showing up on the screen after the SAMSUNG logo appears. I do hear the Sprint 4G LTE music, but that's it. The screen is off.
NOTE: I'm running Sprint's stock 4.1.1 ROM rooted.
Other threads I looked at (neither is the same issue):

I had my first OTA update appear today. When I ran the update, Clockwork showed up and upon hitting "Yes", it failed. I looked around online and found this guide to reverse my rooting: http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/sprint-sgs3-stock-restore.html
I was able to successfully flash TeamEpic-RemoveRoot-from-Recovery-signed.zip, but I didn't hit the keys right for the next one and ended up booting into the OS.
After restarting the phone, I hit the right keys and started ODIN. I saw COM show up in blue and put the TeamEpic-Sprint-SGS3-stock-boot-and-recovery.tar.md5 file in the PDA area then hit Start. I got a green PASS and then closed Odin and waited.
The phone had a black screen with that blue LED in the top left. I waited a while and then just powered it off. Took out the battery and tried again, same thing; although, the SAMSUNG logo does show up. It turns off when the Sprint part is supposed to show and at that moment I can hear the audio but the screen turns off. In this mode, the phone gets very very hot.
I can still boot into the stock recovery, but I can't do much else.
I just wanted the OTA . Does anyone know what might be happening?
EDIT: I put Clockwork Recovery back on, and then Advanced Recovered the boot part of a backup I did before this mess. Surprisingly, that worked. Problem is, I still haven't gotten the OTA working.
Ideas?

Why are you so intent on taking the OTA? Freeza has a stock rooted ROM over in his thread. And if you want just update the baseband, just flash the "MB1 Firmware/modem/baseband update" file in the aforementioned thread.
If you're already rooted with a custom recovery (which you were/are), there's no reason to unroot just to flash the OTA. Freeza typically has his stock rooted ROM updated with the OTA within a week of it being released. In my area OTAs are kind of late, so he typically gets it out before I even see the notification.
So, in summary. OTAs are not required, XDA (and Freeza in particular) has you covered.

I'll go ahead and give it a try then. I haven't ever had a ROM update since I got the phone in October so I figure the upgrade won't work right, and I'll need the full ROM. Currently doing a backup.
Does flashing a ROM affect all app settings? And if so, by that point I'd just wanna have another ROM. The main reason I am fine w/ the stock ROM rooted is bc all my settings and apps are already installed and configured as well as the fact that I know it will work properly. So if this removes my settings, no reason to go stock anymore aside from the fact that I've seen that CyanogenMod doesn't get as good of signal on the S III as stock-based ROMs. Do you know if this still true?

A dirty flash is when you flash without clearing anything, and that's why no data is lost when you do one of those. However it can lead to issues, so i would advise against it when possible

ok guys, i have a question for you. keep in mind that im new to the phone world lol. ok so a bout a month ago i wanted to unroot my phone but for some reason the tar files on sammobile wasnt working right. so i came on here and downloaded what i believed to be the file that i needed to go back to stock. after i used odin and the phone rebooted it automatically notified me that i had a update. after i accepted the update and it rebooted, it again notified me that i have yet another update. so after this happened i noticed that my phone was updated to 4.4.4 kitkat which would be great exept for the fact that it keeps freezing and when i am on wifi i have a problem getting phone calls aswell as text messages. also when i disconnect from wifi i have to restart the phone to get any data back. is there anything that i can do? is it possible to go back to 4.3 or even 4.2.2? any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello! Did you make a back up of your phone before you started the update? That would be the easiest way to go back to how it was. If you used Odin and didn't install a recovery like TWRP or Clockwork you may not have done so. I believe you can reload from Odin with an older ROM it will just erase everything you did. There are stock ROMS here at XDA and galaxynote3root.com as well. Let me know it this helps, sorry for your troubles.

I'm actually surprised that you did get an update to 4.4.4... You could try going back to NF9. The safest route I see that you can take is to install a custom recovery and make a backup before doing this. If you odin NF9 and it doesn't boot then you're kinda screwed because we technically don't have the 4.4.4 update yet, so if anything goes wrong, you can install a recovery again and restore the 4.4.4 backup.

You can get the latest TWRP recovery here : http://www.techerrata.com/file/twrp2/hltetmo/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-hltetmo-4.4.img.tar
Just odin that and after it's done, go into recovery by doing Vol down + Home and do a backup either in your internal or external storage. After that finishes, you can go back in download mode and odin NF9.

So, every time I unlocked my phone it prompted me to install the update. I've been refusing it hoping that a root method would come about. Anyway in a sleepy stupor I accidentally hit the accept button, and the phone rebooted and started updating. I pulled the battery, but I don't know how to stop it. Anyone have any advice?
Thanks!
You pulled the battery while it was updating. If it even still works at all, that will be a miracle.
Try flashing the stock tar with Odin of the build u were on. Gonna lose data, but won't be upgraded hopefully.
Yeah, not one of my brighter moments. Phone still works. It updated to 5.0.1 bof1. I don't know how bad 5.0.1 bof1 is. It has another update it wants to do. Am I past the point of no return with bof1?
Yes you are. You should have used the safe update methods. This woild have eliminatedthe notifications
that's unfortunate :/
So if I am past the point of no return with bof1, should I just do all the rest of the updates, and at least have the advantages of the newest OTA? Does any of it break foxfi?

Ever since I got Marshmallow update on September 26, 2016. My device is not functioning properly. While I'm on phone it randomly restarts, while it's charging it freezes up and restarts, restarts while it's in my pocket. Also sometimes my phone just freezes and if I press power/home button. My phone would not wake up, so I have to remove my battery and put it back in (I do this like 10 times in a day). I already talked to Samsung they said they can't help and also talked to AT&T and they told me to just buy a new device. Basically I want to roll back to Lollipop, because it was working perfectly fine on Lollipop, so if anyone could provide me a link for an official 5.1.1 with August security patch stock at&t ROM it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
same here
I experienced the exact same conditions. Mine would go into reboot hell where it would not complete a reboot and just reboot itself until the battery went dead. I performed a low level factory reset and it returned to some level of functionality. I would like to roll mine back too.
Cannot be done.
Anti-downgrade lock. You have a 6.0 bootloader, cannot flash a 5.x.x one.
Can't do much in your case, except for maybe a factory reset.

Thank you again. Now that I downgraded to 5.11 and unlocked my Note 4 for $9 CND, going back to 6.01 is as simple as Odin EPH5 and do the updates right?

So how we're you able to get lollipop 5.1.1 ? I was able to downgrade to 5.0.1. I'm hearing 5.1.1 was the better of the firmware. Please post like or direct me where I can continue my journey of finding the files. I have Sm-N910A thanks
I just received OTA on my 975U ASF6, includes night mode in the stock camera app!!!! New Charging animation. Only had it for 5 minutes. Anybody else get it? If so post what changes you've noticed it was 522.5 Mb

What carrier do you have? Nothing showing up anywhere for Sprint yet.
There was an article about it. ATT is the only US carrier to get the night mode feature (ASF6)
The rest of us will have to wait.

Well that sucks ass....
I'm on AT&T and I got impatient. I haven't done any phone-related poweruser activities in a few years so I said screw it and went to firmware.science. Grabbed the update zip. Sideloaded it. Went well...but hangs at "Starting Android". And they rolled over the bootloader version so I can't Odin back. ****.
Anyone have any thoughts? I can't seem to find a full Odin ASF6 download yet, which is expected considering it dropped yesterday.
My fault for getting impatient.

Usually I'd be in the same boat as you, but since I'm on Sprint it wouldn't even let me sideload the firmware science update

AT&T
I saw it on firmware science and set my clock to July 4th as it wouldn't update at first. Said it was up to date. Set my date to July 4th and it updated! Camera is sweet! Fingerprint works way better for me and battery is better as well. Phone feels "smoother" all around as well. After a cache wipe and a reboot

I've been recovering from Samsung/Odin modding addiction for about 3-4 years now. My first relapse and this happens
I'll give it a few hours, and if an Odin file for ASF6 doesn't show up somewhere, I'll just suck it up and Factory reset.
On a side note does anyone see their signatures or others???? I have had one for ages, it's in my control panel but not showing and I don't see anybody elses....

Ugh, why don't I see mine or anybody elses? I logged out and logged back in, checked my control panel settings and nothing... Not a huge deal but I don't know why
The new update has also dropped for Verizon. So Verizon and AT&T are the only ones with the new night mode for the camera.

Usually when flashing an Att upgrade via odin 99% of the time a factory reset is required.

Regardless of using HOME_CSC? Well that's a shame.
Damn. Back when I was flashing stuff daily I was on USC & VZW, so this is my first rodeo with an ATT phone. Thanks for the heads up.

You sure about that? Last 2 phones I've had were purchased directly from Samsung, but ATT model, and I never received a single OTA update from ATT. So I've resorted to upgrading via Odin. Haven't had to do a factory reset once.

You would be wrong. I Odin'd numerous times on the S9+ and twice on the 10+. As long as you use Home CSC, it doesn't wipe. The 10+ says it's wiping but doesn't (or is only wiping cache).
Using an update.zip on the other hand wipes an ATT device.

As long as you use a HOME CSC, Odin does NOT wipe an ATT device. Only if you use an update.zip

That's what I thought (about HOME_CSC, I mean).
Are you referring to sideloading a FOTA update ZIP via ADB? Maybe i'm missing something, but before I sideload anything I always comb through the updater-script. Old habit from CWM-Zip flashing. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, nor do I recall seeing the userdata partition even mentioned in it, let alone any kind of factory reset initiation.
I DO recall seeing "Failed to update vendor image." towards the end of the sideload. When checking the last.log, looked pretty messed up. Almost like a kind of corruption of some kind. The log is gone now though, because first thing I did was Wipe Cache when it hung at "Starting Android"
May be too early to know for sure but I think I'm finally getting good reception and the signal strenth is now displaying in settings/connections/mobile networks.
On Verizon with the ASD9 firmware it would display not available now its giving me actually numbers.
