[Q] Gmail 5.0 on One M8 - using exchange? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've received my nexus 9, and discovered the support of exchange account on the Gmail app which is really great. I really wanted to configure the same on my HTC one m8, but I don't have the option when I add a new account.
I 've already checked that the versions are the same on both devices (5.0 1569867) but I lack the option Exchange from the drop list of the mail account type. (I have the Gmail and imap/pop option)
I' ve tryed couple of search but I found none reporting the same issue. Any idea there is a magic tricks to activate exchange support on the m8 (htc edition, not the play edition).
Thanks!

What's the version of Gmail on your HTC One M8? You can know the version from Settings > Apps > Gmail , under the application icon you will find the application version, exchange services was added in Version 5.0, and I don't think you we will be able to see it except if you received the new gmail version or side loaded it.

Like I said in my first message: 5.0 1569867, the exact same version than on my nexus 9.

There is an exchange.apk that goes around which will enable it for you. No idea if it's version specific though. Let me try to find it and post it for you.

Here you are. As i said i don't know if the apk is version specific so try it on your own risk. After you install exchange.apk Force Stop and reopen Gmail. When you add account you will see a new option for "Exchange"

Request Mail.apk without exchange security policy

Hi,
Can someone please make a Mail.apk without the security policies for exchange servers?
I'm interested in one for stock 4.2.2 2.24.401.1
It was another thread where someone built one for 4.1 and custom firmwares but the developer stopped the support on that thread so therefore I'm opening this one.
someone in the thread made it, based off of 4.2.2:

Hi,
I am looking for HTC SENSE Mail.APK WITH exchange security to work on Google Play Edition ROM. I don't want to mess with exchange security override since I think it is unnecessary and will end up not working with my exchange policies. Does anyone have a stock mail.APK that they know works on the GE Rom?

I am running the GOOGLE EDITION Rom from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358781.
I tried using some of the zips and APKs that I found on the forum.... I was able to successfully get past the first setup page where i entered the server details - which means that it is seeing the server and password etc. is accepted. But after that it fails to create the account giving the message "failed to create the account. please try again later." Now, I know this error is not because of my Exchange Server settings because i get this same app to work any any and all HTC Sense Roms.

no, they will not work, you've already made a thread, and replied twice in this thread and its pretty much off topic at this point.
the camera was ported since it the GPE has the sense framework for the camera. I highly doubt the GPE has the framework for the mail. I suggest installing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356512

Google Now (Google Search) Voice controls for armv6, anyone?

Hopefully I won't be offending anyone by cross-forum posting,
I worked out a widget to use online voice recognition on armv6 devices and feed it to Google Search. I'm running 3.3.10 myself
I see there are a few older threads about that here that aren't solved... So I'm offering my program if anyone would like to try it out.
[armv6][APP][4.2+]Voice Search Wrapper for Google Now (Google Search)
See, I have an armv6 device too, and I like the idea of supporting the newer Google software for older devices, since Google won't do it themselves or release source code so we can do it properly.

The widget should run fine but I don't know if the version of Now you'd have to use has the same intent to launch the search as newer versions.
Hm, 10.1 uses quicksearchbox.apk instead of Velvet.apk
It might work though. It would be easy to test... if I had a cm10 rom for my device still.
I'd say to test versions from here instead as they might work and would be more functional than the old quicksearchbox. If they install they may work, but you need version higher than 2.0 or the widget definitely won't feed voice data to Now.

Installation:
Get Voice Search on Play
get the apk from post 2, and install it.
If youve already got Google Now version 3.10 or higher sideloaded you can skip this next bit, go straight to fixing the Google Now settings.
I haven't been able to get either the launcher or Search to work installing from Play.
The Easy Way
Sideload the official apks from somewhere like androidpolice, and then you don't have to push anything to /data.
Here's the androidpolice 3.3 article with a download link.
The Harder Way
Get Now (and the launcher if you see fit) from the gapps here.
G Now is four files. /system/priv-app/Velvet.apk (chmod 644)
and three libs from /system/lib
libvcdecoder_jni.so, libgoogle_recognizer_jni_l.so, and libgoogle_hotword_jni.so (chmod 644)
(thanks to Dovidhalevi for pointing out the libvcdecoder.jni.so, I had missed that one.)
the launcher is /system/app/GoogleHome.apk (chmod 644) but it's not required.
you can 'adb install' Velvet, then adb push the three libs to /data/data/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/lib if you don't have space on /system.
Fix Google Search Settings!
once those files are installed,
1) immediately go into Google settings > Search & Now > Voice > "Ok Google" hotword detection, and turn it off.
2) Then back up one menu to Google settings > Search & Now > Voice, open Language and set it to something obscure like Hungarian (this avoids nasty FCs that happen to some users, thanks again Dovidhalevi for the tip!)
Important: If Search keeps closing on you, you need to make sure you changed the language in Google settings as listed in #2 from the previous paragraph.
If there's no setting to turn off hotword detection, the version is too old. try v3.10 or newer.
still get Search force closes? @rar**** posted a fix.
Usage:
The first time you run it there will (well, should) be a dialog asking what you want to use. Select Voice Search, Always.
(If there's not a dialog asking what to run for this action, go to Settings >Apps > Google Search and clear defaults. If that doesn't do it, clear defaults for Voice Search and VoiceSearchWrapper too.)
The widget can be activated by long-press search button. Another dialog should pop up. Select VoiceSearchWrapper, always.
Just tell it what to do, like after the hotword on a newer device. Instead of "Ok Google, weather" just say "weather."

[Q] Whatsapp no longer available for P605

I have been using whatsapp on my P605 for a while now with no issues. Suddenly it it telling me that I need to update whatsapp in the next 5 days or it will no longer work, but in the play store I am told that "whatsapp your device isn't compatible with this version"
Anyone know a workaround for getting the play store to allow me to install this app?

Thanks I extracted the apk from my phone which worked, I would however prefer a way to force my P605 to allow the download via the play store so that I get updates as they come.

OK ... but if you find a way to do it ...please let me know as I have the same problem :fingers-crossed:
Ok I logged an email with whatsapp support and received the response below. However judging by the speed of the reply I suspect this is an automated reply.
I responded with a query asking why now my device has been regarded as unsupported since it has full telephony features but they have not responded to this
Hi,
WhatsApp is designed specifically for smartphones, and therefore is not compatible with tablets or other non-smartphone devices. We currently do not support these devices and have no plans to do so in the foreseeable future.
Please note that if by chance you are able to use WhatsApp on your unsupported device, we are unable to provide support for any problems that may arise.

You csn use the app market helper, it needs root access and it will fake your build.prob to a number of handsets you can choose from

I sideloaded the latest WhatsApp and the application still does not work on the P605. Honestly, **** WhatsApp for this dumb choice.

No ActiveSync Account in 14.1?

Hi everybody,
just installed the current LineageOS nightly on my Galaxy S5 which worked without any problem. After that I installed OpenGApps (stock).
Now I wanted to add some formerly under stock rom used ActiveSync (Exchange) accounts.
But the only account type that can be found under "Settings -> accounts" is google? I even cant't find Pop3 nor imap...
Is that because LineageOS is just nightly or do I miss sth.?
Thx for any hint!
Snoopy
Just read a bit on the lineageOS Website and stumbeld across a little hint here:
https://wiki.lineageos.org/gapps.html
"Note: If you reboot into LineageOS before installing Google apps, you must factory reset and then install them."
I just followed that (Factory Reset my Phone, re - installed LineageOS and immediatly without rebooting from recovery installed the stock GApps).
After system reboot the first start wizard looks completeley different than after my first try (think, this was now the google-one) and I was able to configure Exchange Accounts with it.
BUT:
After creating the Exchange Accounts everythung works fine, data was synced... but in the "Preferences -> Accounts" page just the google Account is visible... the Exchange accounts aren't there and again I can't add new ones...
A little workaround (or is that the correct way from now on?):
Open GMail App, there go to the "preferences". Here one can see / configure the Exchange accounts or add other ones...
After clean Installing the last Nightly for my S5 (klte) (lineage-14.1-20170301-nightly-klte-signed.zip) the account preference page again shows all acounts, not just the google one.
Now I understood, that the ExchangeAccounts are really managed by the GMail App. The build in "Android E-Mail" - App just supports IMAP and POP3, not ActiveSync.
I noticed the same thing, but when I loaded the latest Nightly everything went back to normal, including Google.

No Exchange ActiveSync Account in this ROM?
Flashed Android O-build zerofltexx-2017-10-06_2147, and open_gapps-arm64-8.0-pico-20171010 from opengapps.org
If I install open_gapps-arm64-8.0-micro-20171010, witch include Gmail and others apps, Exchange account is available only for Gmail, not for stock Mail app.
Is there another option for Exchange Activesync for stock Mail app?
Thanks.

Moto G5 not compatible with Android Auto?

I can't find Android Auto on the playstore on my phone, and when I go to the playstore from my PC it tells me that "This app is incompatible with all of your devices."
Is it really incompatible, or maybe this is because Android Auto is not yet available in my country?

As far as I can tell the only requirements for the app itself is android lollipop and above so it probably is geo restricted
Since I don't have your device anymore I can't check
I have included the app in the attachment below though for you to install yourself
It is compatible, I am using it and installed it from play store. Maybe clear the Play store cache? AS pointed out you can also just install the apk (also from apkmirror)
Thanks. Are you using it with the G5 or the G5 Plus?
What is strange is that it is telling me that it is incompatible with my device, and not that it is not available in my country, as it happens with some other apps.
Is it is safe to install it with an .apk, and would I receive updates if I do it that way?

The apk I posted was downloaded by myself from the playstore so totally safe
You would only get updates if It is available in your playstore & even then you may have to uninstall & reinstall depending on app signatures if different in different locations

Thanks. If I can get confirmation that it should work with the moto g5 (not the plus) then I will try it out.
Any reason why Google would have country restrictions on Android Auto? The cars are the same, the apps (maps, music etc) work fine, so why place restrictions on Android Auto? Apple doesn't seem to have any such restriction with Car Play (in my country at least)

Why do you need confirmation to try it? Just try it - it will either install or say app not installed
Like I said the only min requirements is lollipop so no reason why the app won't install
Some apps maybe geo restricted for licensing purposes - if Googling why the app isn't available in your country doesn't come up with anything the only thing you can do is contact the app developer

If you know my reputation around here you know I provide support
I used to be a recognised contributor but left xda for a while
Also I provided the official twrp for this device
So looking through my past posts/threads you will see the kind of support I provide
Of course, I mean you work on twrp for g5 and yet someone still manages to be suspicious
I am not suspicious I just want to know if it actually works! If this is not a country thing, maybe they marked this phone as incompatible for a good reason. I don't yet have a car with Android Auto so I can't fully test it now. Maybe it would run on the phone itself, but then fail to connect to the car (I've seen reports of this happening for several phones including different versions of the Moto G). Or maybe there is some other kind of bug that only shows up once connected to a car...

The only person that can answer your question would be the app developer
Would be quicker & easier to test yourself as the chance of someone with a moto g5 & the car you might have with android auto support would be highly unlikely
In these situations it's always better to just try yourself or contact the app developer for support
I installed the apk that TheFixItMan has provided and it works fine, on both the phone and a car I tried it with for a few minutes. Thanks!
As it was said previously I can't update Android auto from the play store now, so I assume at some point it might stop working properly. Should I just get a new apk every time I need an update?
