[Q] BLE HRM and GPS connecting directly to Moto 360? - Moto 360

Hi Everybody,
I'd like to know if there is any thing besides software preventing us from connecting directly to chest HRMs and GPSs through bluetooth LE with Moto 360.
Moto 360 has a built-in HRM that is optical and for running and other types of activity, the precision would be very low. So by connecting a chest HRM to it I think we would solve this problem.
About the GPS, the latest Android Wear version brings support do GPS. I wonder if we could use something like this http://blutracker.com that connects through BLE to enable GPS on Moto 360 and possible other android wear devices.
I think that this would be a very good functionality for a root...
What do you think?

Good question. At some point I will need to replace my trusty Motoactv and at the moment the only thing to fit the bill is the Sony Smartwatch 3. The 360 looks so much nicer.

I'm not a fan of compromises. My Moto 360 serves as a normal watch only and my TomTom Multiwatch serves as a fitness watch only. I simply don't expect to have anything with one thing - and as per now you won't find such a device anyway. BTW you're wrong if you think a chest HRM outperforms an optical one.

It is not the tecnology, it how the information is collected and in what conditions. By iluminating the capillaries of you skin you will get a less acurrate mesurements while running.
CNET made a good bechmark on the available devices and is clear how off were the devices based on optical sensors. Check http://www.cnet.com/news/how-accurate-are-wristband-heart-rate-monitors/ for full review.

I don't need any benchmarks since I'm able to compare both systems. The output between my Polar HRM chest belt and my TomTom Runner Cardio has never shown any significant differences.

Bluetooth heart rate monitor

hello,
I've been thinking. Every time I go exercise I take my Polaris with me.
It measures where i've been (GPS tracking) and entertains me (BT stereo). But now I would like to know my heartrate as well (and i don't feel like buying yet another watch)
Does anybody know a BT heart rate monitor?
I've done some googleing and came up with a system from Alive technologies, but as far as i can see it's more focussed towards health care than exercise. Furthermore it's not available in Europe, which is a problem for me since i live in belgium.
Thanks for the help.
Not sure there are any viable ones out there at the moment, my basic googling found that theres work being done on a bluetooth profile suitable for medical devices.
This would be a huge find for me. My 10mo son had heart surgery when he was 4mo's and we have a home monitor but would love to have something more portable for trips and random checks of his heartrate. I'll definitely be looking into the Alive technologies products, thanks for the info!
Edit - The alive technologies product is exactly what I have been looking for. I've emailed the company for more information. Thanks so much again for this find John!!!
2nd Edit - Found out they're not FDA approved so they're not available to the public yet, only research groups and universities. They expected to have it released to the public by the end of the year for anyone interested. No prices were given either....
Thanks for the update 2ksilverbullet
Did they mention anything about some more extensive software for training ?
Unfortunately no comment was made to the training software, sorry.
Just letting you know, Polar Heart rate systems interfear with BT, whops, other way around. If I training with my BT turned on, the signal from my polar HR monitor doesnt work till I turn BT off.
Hello,
have a look here:

Let know if it could be useful.

MiCoach system (Adidas/Samsung)
This nice running system by Samsung and Adidas is worth mentioning; the feature to track your results like speed/heart-rate/etc.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nXdFtmG1LA -> I want this, or a stripped down version of it (read: cheaper).
On their site (that is http://www.micoach.com) it is unclear what sort of signal is being used. I presume it Is bluetooth, but they probably made their own protocol to communicate:
"Can I use my own heart rate monitor with miCoach? No, miCoach is a complete and stand-alone system. The Heart Rate Monitor connects via a specific signal to the phone and stride sensor."
2ksilverbullet, have you tried Polar HR Monitors?
You can use Vidaone's software to transfer all your HR trainning/records to your mobile: 1. directly, if your gadget has a IrDA port (with MySportTraining and VidaOne Polar); 2. from you PC (Win), with a specifically soft (VidaOne Diet and Fitness and the two previous on your mobile).
I'm using Polar for more than 9 year for my diary training and they are simply the best HR monitor in the market. The same accuracy as an electrocardiogram (I already tested it with my cardiologist).
If you need any other help, do not hesitate to ask/post it.
I think theres no device we can buy, I'm after a device like this also.
bt hrm
hey
I wonder if it is any gps programs you can use with a BT HRM? it would be wonderful to use the mobil phone as a cycle computer or a tour gps.
if it is any programs plz list
Hello,
does anybody know, what is the price for Zephyr BT HRM or HxM belt, without SDK.
I cannot find price on their website.
Thanks
I found the following quote on youtube (posted 3 months ago).
The BT BioHarness is available with SDK from Ribatel in Portugal (see our website for details), or from Zephyr direct. The RRP is US$1325.
We also have a BT HRM and BT HxM (heart rate with speed & distance)available with an SDK. These are US$100 and US$120 + shipping respectively.
The quote is from someone at Zephyr.
Run GPS (www.rungps.net) provides the best offroad GPS application, IMO. You can import map, track. It provides vocal guidance according to your track, records your position and, optionnaly, it is able to minor your heart by using BT heart monitor.
Now, there is a large community that shares tracks for several sports (hiking, bike, jogging and running, ...)
Go to the web site, and see by yourself.
An interesting application of the bt heartrate monitor is analysis of sleep phases to produce a wakeup alarm during REM. This greatly reduces drowsiness, and allows to wakeup the the most refreshed.
HRM for PDA
Did anyone else find a worthwhile sports oriented HRM method for PDA/PPC?
I just broke another polar HRM, they are rubbish, too flimsy & fidly for mountain biking
I use one of the gps trackers from here and stash my diamond away in a padded pocket in my backpack.
The altsoft stuff is way too expensive and the rungps is just gps logging, not a HRM
I think like a lot of folks I not training to be an elite athlete, I'd just like to monitor my hear rate on my ppc.
Anyone try a Zephyr strap yet?
Bike Dashboard GPS with Heart Rate Monitor
This is my first post here, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned; but, I came across this site that has a freeware program called "BikeDashboard" that I have been playing with for a few days. Works fine with my Verizon XV6800 flashed to a GPS capable ROM. Very 'thumb friendly'. I don't have a BT heart rate monitor yet; but, the software developer of Bike Dashboard says he uses the Zephyr XhM. Check out the website for more info:

Cheers!
Polar and Nokia have teamed up and make the Nokia Sports Tracker. I can't figure out how to buy one though. With so many great sport tracking apps out for the Android platform BT HRMs can't be far off.
It looks like the Zephyr HxM bluetooth bundle from rungps.net is the best bet, but is expensive. $230 USD!
For reference, here are all the links from this thread and the Nokia info I found:

Has anyone used a BT heart rate monitor.....
......with any of these programs? I have narrowed it down to two programs RUNGPS and Athlosoft. Both are very expensive solutions but the BT heart rate monitor seems to be a very new item. Any other suggestions on a fitness program with BT heart rate monitor? I am also intrested to know if these programs will monitor your workout in a gym, while using cardio equipment?
Thanks
Hello all,
This is my first post but have been reading here for a long time.
I was wondering if anyone already has found a bluetooth heart rate monitor and an application to go with it (Android or WM).
The nokia teaming with polar seems nice, but is not an option for me (Just got a new Android phone).
And when one has a BT heart rate monitor, can software (i.e. reading the heart rate and storing it) be easily developed ? Off course, on XDA anything can be developed but are people willing to ?
Greetings, Bert

[Q] Polar H7 heart rate sensor and the HOX

Does anyone hva a solution for the Polar H7 heart rate sensor not working on HOX? The H7 utilizes the new bluetooth 4. The HOX supports this standard, but Android seems to lack native support for it?

I do not have a solution but I can share my experience. I just bought the Polar H7 this morning and successfully paired it with my Motorola Photon Q 4G which also supports BT4.0.
After reading a lot of user experiences on the Internet it seems that this isn't a native Android issue as many have suggested, rather, you need to make sure you are using a heart rate monitoring app that can detect BT 4.0 devices. I'm using MapMyFitness which works fine but I've seen reports of many other users using apps that do not detect heart rate on both Android and that other fruity OS when paired with the H7.
I hope this helps.

One and heart rate monitor belt Polar H7

So I bought the Polar H7 heart rate monitor belt. It transmits both on 5kHz and also BT 4/BT Smart/BLE. I tried to check beforehand if it was compatible, which was not easy as HTC does not say that One is BT Smart Ready (that is the term for a phone) and the accessory shall be BT Smart compatible. So this post is just to bring the good news and to say I got it to work
OK, it is not so difficult as both Polar H7 and One is listed on BT's official site. Then I guess it should be straightforward..
However the app Polar Beat which goes together with H7 is not compatible with One, I tried to install it, but it is not possible to get it to work. So then what?
You use another app as iCardio, Runtastic pro or Endomondo, Endomondo which just today got support for Bluetooth Smart.
This works OK. However for stationary training Runtastic will not calculate kcals, so using iCardio or Endomondo should be the solution. I have not tried either of the last two yet.
Edit: I tried Runtastic Pro, iCardio and Endomondo at the Gym, 1 hr 20 min of Circle training not too hard intensity, I got 1055 kcal burnt with Endomondo which seems very high.
With iCardio app I got 724 kcals burnt which seems more reasonably. Probably high too, but at least more likely.
So I guess to soon to be impressed by Endomondo's new support for BT Smart
The blocking of Polar Beat seems to me to be because of commercial partnering between Apple and Polar, and possibly Samsung.
I have even called Polar headquarter in Finland to get an answer, but they will not say anything.
Some places it says that Samsung S4 and S3 is beta testing for android, I do not know. Of course, it is possible.
Anyway the belt works with different android apps, but I miss the Polar Beat app which seems a little more refined and advanced.
I would think Polar would want to sell the belt H7 to as many customers as possible, but I guess they are comitted to Apple and possibly Samsung.
As the belt both communicates with 5kHz and BLE it will show your pulse on training equipment displays in the gym and also on a Polar BLE compatible monitor as RCX5 or another.
I understand your frustration.

I am in the same boat and I used to use Runkeeper to track my runs and i loved it. But it doesn't support this feature and after inquiring with their help team it seems as though they have no intention of supporting it any time in the NEAR future if at all. I have since moved over to Map My Run and Map My Fitness, they can log indoor activities and pair VERY easily with the Polar H7. It's not a perfect situation but I hope that helps you until everyone else catches up with the curve.
Yes, like you, I manage , but I hoped Polar would make it possible to use One with Polar Beat.
Or that it will be other good apps to use.
At the moment I use several, but am not happy with any one.
I have used several apps, among them iCardio which pairs easily.
I was surprised that Polar Beat have released an update April 29 and now it is possible to install the app on HTC One, M7 and probably lots of other mobiles with BT 4 /BLE.
Good news, I thought.
However, so far I am not able to pair and get the app showing heart rate.
I have used my One with H7 and 4 apps and never had any problems pairing.
I even used 3 or 4 at the same time to compare, and no problems.
So I hope Polar will fix the app in a coming update, or does anyone have a solution?.
Update : I fiddled around and finally managed to pair with both Beat and iCardio active and paired iCardio first. Then Beat found the H7 belt and heart rate worked and showed.
I will try out Beat now and see how things works.

[Q] Polar hear reate monitor for Sony Z3C - which will be best?

Hi,
I have to buy Polar Hear Rate Monitor for Sony Z3C (Android 5.0.2 Lollipop). I will use this polar with endomodo app. There are two option:
1) Polar H7
2) Polar Wearlink
My question is: which polar will be full compatibile with my sony z3c and endomodo?
What are differences?
Maybe there is something better on the market?
Its works with Endomodo: http://www.polar.com/en/support/FAQ..._Compatibility?product_id=30454&category=faqs
I was using Polar WearLink on my Z1C, give me some times to try
Tested on Z3C and is working in 98%, it`s seams that connection is loosing every ~8s (see attached file) and then is back, i had this same issue on Z1C, Polar says that this is happen on phone with Bluetooth 3.0.
Try H7
H7 works without issues with Z3C. Works with Enomondo just fine.
I have wearlink and I had issues with it. After sending back and forward to repair (warranty) I got finally to the conclusion while discussing with service expert.
Wearlink is done for Bluetooth 2 (B2) and while Bluetooth 4 (B4) is backwards compatible polar sometimes doesn't work ok with B4.
So what happened/can happen: if not correctly disconnected wearlink can still be turned on until the battery is drained. To get wearlink unstuck it has to be reset by the service. Until it is reset it can't be found by any other Bluetooth device and once it is reset it again works perfectly. The reset is done by taking the battery out and shortcut the + and - pins inside.
With H7 (B4) there is no issue and the battery anyhow lasts longer.
What I currently do is always disconnect (turn off) the Bluetooth on the phone prior to taking the wearlink of the strap. In the last two months I had no issues.
Cheers, Matjaz

Do you have any reason to choose Polar?
I guess in HR belts most of the times the problems are in the band/connectors than in the sensors.
For 1/3rd of the price of the Polar you have Bluetooth HR Belts from Decathlon (I guess their brands are btwin or geonaute) and from Lidl (Brand is Medisana), you have a review here in spanish.
With Android and Bluetooth in terms of sports I guess it is something like trial and error. For example Suunto is trying to do an app to connect to their bluetooth Ambit 3 watch and they are having an hard time, with some brands of phones working others not...
There is garmin, That uses ANT+ protocol to comunication btw watch and HR monitor strap.
It happens that sony and samsung flagships, (z3 included) are capable to receive Ant+ signals.
So you could buy an garmin watch, or just its HR monitor.
Be aware that not all apps are ant+ compatible, endomondo is, but, for instance, runtastic is not
anyone knows if Garmin ant+ HR strap will work with Z3C?
I have had two garmin straps that worked great
Now I use a fitbit charge HR, (not as excact, but good enough for me) so I don't use them anymore.

RUNNING, BIKING, SWIMMING : MOTO 360 or SONY SMARTWATCH 3 ?

Hi everybody,
I would like to buy a smartwatch to prepare a marathon. First, I looked to sport watches but I found them very expensive. Moreover, I want to use this device as a casual gadget.
I use ENDOMONDO for more than one year on Android and i love this app. Moreover, and it's a good news, ENDOMONDO is available on Android Wear.
I'm looking for a smartwatch that allows me to go running, biking, swimming (not necessary), walking,... without my phone. I will synchronize my data using bluetooth when i will be back at home. Also, I don't want to spend more than 200$ in this smartwatch.
I really like the design of the MOTO 360, its price and its native compatibility to ENDOMONDO. However, MOTO 360 doesn't integrate a GPS chipset. In the other hand, SONY SMARTWATCH 3 has a GPS chipset inside but the design isn't as well as the MOTO 360 for a similar price.
Which one can you advice me ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Go with the sony watch. The battery and lack of water proofing on the 360 makes it not suitable for your needs.

Tanks for your answer.
Moreover, can you confirm that I need to bring my phone everytime with moto 360 ?
Yes, you will need to have your phone along with you if you need gps tracking. The moto 360 have a compass and gyroscope but not gps built in.
Thanks for these details. I've just bought the Sony watch at a very good price. I have just to run now...
Curious why you were interested in those two and not something like Garmin devices?
Hi cliffr39,
I looked for Garmin or Pulsar but I found these devices expensive for my personal use. I preferred a smart watch that I can use either during my trainings and as a casual watch (I mean a gadget).
Moreover, I wanted a device easy and user friendly to follow my stats on my endomondo app.
Hi guys,
This message to let you know my smartwatch 3 does the job. I can run without my phone, it's pleasant. The GPS is also fine (5 min to find the good location).
Next step will be to get deezer on the smartwatch...
