[Q] A basic root question - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Been considering rooting the device for a little while and was wondering a few things.
I'm coming off a samsung G S 5 and there a few major drawbacks to rooting , like loosing all warranty and support from Samsung ( they are freaking draconian when it comes to enforcing the no touch principle)
Are there any drawbacks to rooting? Technical or warranty related.. Do you loose functions?
is it hard to unroot?
Simplest way to root? Stump vs purpledrake ?
Anything else one needs to keep in mind when rooting?
How do you run updates after root?
I know a lot of these are uber noob questions, and please bare with me on this. I just don't want to do something I'll regret later
thanks in advance

Best place to start reading about the rooting process is in the sticky at the top of this thread. Lots of information by many smart guys, so take your time and read through the lot before doing anything.
Why root? Well by rooting you can install custom ROMs which contain new software or customisations and programs outside of the stuff that HTC chooses to provide in their stock ROMs.
Good luck.
And just a word of advice - have a good read of all the stuff in the forum before asking questions. Will most certainly reduce the risk of you getting flamed
thanks mate.
Also, just run the phone as it is - you may find it does what you want it to do out the box - rooting is only neccessary if something you wish to do isn't available without rooting...

At the moment, I wouldn't say it's very advantageous to root your desire. I rooted my G1 back in the day (only a year or so ago I know ) - but with the Desire, the rooting process still leaves part of the OS locked down, which means you still don't get full control over it.
The only advantage I could see at the moment for rooting the desire would be to get Apps 2 SD. However this is rumoured to be a new feature in Android 2.2 (Froyo) which is due for release within the next month or 2 for Desires. So rather than void your warranty and risk bricking your phone. It might be better to wait for 2.2 and see what you get with that!
i have no idea why everyne doesnt root the desire when they get it... goto modaco.com goto the desire section and follow the r6 riskfree root process and now ou will have a world class phone that you can install app2sd , app2sd+ or app2sd++ nt to mention all the custom roms... good luck
What's the difference between app2sd, app2sd+ and app2sd++ ???

Q's and help regarding Optimus Sol and rooting.

I, of course, searched around for the answer to these questions, but didn't find any - here or on the internet.
I spent a long time working on my custom theme/appearance, and have also considered rooting my phone (LG Optimus Sol) in order to be able to customize all aspects of it.
My questions:
1. Theme problem: Like I said, I spent quite a while on my theme, if I root my phone, will my theme and/or widgets be lost?
2. Rooting: I use Gingerbread as OS and would like to know which rooting program is better/safer: Gingerbreak or SuperOneClick?
3. Brick solution: I know the risks of rooting, and I would like to know if there is any chance to un-brick my Sol if the horrible thing happens.
I hope this thread doesn't get ignored. >.<
Have an awesome day.
Thank you in advance for the answers.

[Q] Beginner Help

Hi all,
I have been an iPhone user for a long time and have become frustrated with the methodical cycling of old tech via new OS', so I want to switch over to Android. That beginning said, I want to upgrade my phone to Cyanogenmod 11 (M5 I believe?) but I definitely need some technical help. I am not looking to brick my phone.
I read a few guides on how one goes about upgrading their device but there are still some points I am unsure of. A large area of confusion for me at the moment is this:
-What is the difference between a unlocked bootloader and a rooted device? My understanding is that an unlocked bootloader is more basic, like having access to the "BIOS" in your phone. A rooted device, on the other hand, pertains to the OS, as if one was upgrading between Ubuntu and Windows. I am confused because the article I read states that I can flash a custom ROM in the unlocked bootloader, without rooting. If this is the case, why would anyone want root access?
-Nightly vs. snaphot vs. stable: I understand that these represent levels of stability that increases from nightly to stable. My question is regarding updating. If I install a nightly/snapshot, will I have to flash/wipe/etc every time I want to install an upgrading nightly?
-Lastly, I have had on my eye on this guide for when I upgrade: (REMOVE BRACKETS FROM "COM")
true-android.blogspot.[com]/2013/12/update-verizon-galaxy-nexus-sch-i515-to_17.html
Is that good guide to go by? Does that make any assumptions about upgrading that new user like me would not be aware of?
Thank you for any help.
Thanks for the help boys
