[Q] T989D won't connect to PC - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I just got a S2X from a friend who recently upgraded to a Nexus 5. I already have a Nexus 7 (2013), but I want to play around with rooting and ROM's on this S2X. For me, it's a chance to play with a device that doesn't really mater a whole lot. But anyway, when I connect the phone to my PC, it will charge but do absolutely nothing else. Doesn't show up in Devices, not in Explorer, nothing. I tried installing Kies and the USB drivers for the S2, but nothing has worked. Any ideas?

Install kies and it will install the proper drivers. If you use Odin later to flash recovery and ROOT, make sure to end all processes of kies first. Or Odin will fail. ?

I did install Kies. The phone doesn't even show up as an unknown device under devices. I can connect over wifi

Try a different cable, different USB port or a different pc.
---------- Post added at 07:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:30 PM ----------
You need to sort this out so you can use Odin. Otherwise you won't be able to do anything.

Try a different MicroUSB Cable, Different Usb port and or Check and download the right drivers for SG2.
SG2 Drivers can be found here; http://androidxda.com/download-samsung-usb-drivers
Download and install.
Re-start.
Try again.
If still not working, turn on usb debugging and then disconnect and re-connect to PC Make sure USB DEBUGGING IS ON..

[Q] TWA'a CM10/JB USB not detected/mounting

I just got into flashing my KF (noob, I know) and everything went smoothly except for this. I like the CM10 ROM that TWA put out and according to posts in that thread USB mounting works fine, but it doesn't for me. The PC and KF don't recognize that they are connected with a USB at all. There is no notifications on either end. This worked fine before I flashed. And I changed ROMs to Hashcodes JB AOSP ROM and USB notification and mounting worked fine there. I then flashed back to the CM10 and still no love.
So how can I debug this? What settings should I check? Are there an apps out there that will let me get more info about my setup to see if something is screwy regard USB. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.
I have tried a couple tips I found in the CM10 thread, but they didn't help. (specifically switching to Hashcodes ROM and back again)

also did you wipe? wipe factory reset wipe cache wipe dalvik wipe system flash rom flash gapps reboot
Debugging was turned off. I turned it back on, rebooted and that did the trip.
Many thanks.
I think I will do a full wipe (was just doing the cache/dalvik after the first install) to make sure nothing else is screwy

After playing around with this a bit something is still not right.
I have debugging turned on, but USB is only successfully detected if I reboot with the usb cable plugged in to a PC. Then I can mount and dismount as many times as I want. everything is fine. But once I disconnect the USB cable, the KF will never detect the cable plug in again (nor will the PC). I have to reboot plugged in again to get it to show up.
I've done this several times same thing. I've tried plugging the cable in at different points too, before I unlock the screen, after. Only when in from reboot to unlock does it work.

i have the same issue on mine, using twa builds
also, sometimes when i plug in the usb cable it makes the kindle run extremely slow and laggish, requiring a reboot.
*Bump*
Does only detecting usb connected once per reboot only happen to the two of us in this thread? CM10 works pretty well for me, but this is a bit of an annoyance. I have a work around, reboot, but still...
I have the same issue. In fact, I can't get USB storage to work after installing CM10 8/24.
But I think the issue has to do with multiple Android USB drives being installed in Win7. I have a TF201 and Xoom and when I plug in the KF, USB reports the TF201 being connected. Of course Win7 does not show KF in Desktop Explorer. The only way I can download a new ROM to my KF is via my NAS which I connect via ES File Manager....
Can anyone confirm that having multiple Android devices causes this USB confusion?
You have to specifically enable USB storage before it will mount.
Unable to root! Stucked on TWRPP 2.2.0 Screen with several options
Hello!
I've tried to root my Kindle Fire, following the same steps that most of the users have followed (Using KFU 0.9.6).
Unfortunately, while installing the root (I guess) once it installs TWRPP, it inmediately boots up to the TWRPP screen with several options ( Install, Backup, Restore...) and the KFU software keeps a message that says Please wait.
Does anyone know how to fix this and finish the rooting of the device?
Thanks in advanced.

I have enabled but it still will not mount for some reason. I had a forced reboot issue appear as well.
try the previous build see if that doesnt solve your problem you must have usb debugging enabled and then tap on the icon in your status bar to transfer files...
I've been limping along just using the work around of rebooting while plugged in to get usb mounting to work.
But today I had KF mount to my PC, deleted the ADB drivers in windows from the device manager. Did a factory wipe on the tablet (even wiped the SD card), I'm running the latest TWA rom 8/28. I still can only get usb to detect if I reboot while connected to a pc. A couple little differences; after the wipe ADB was turned off on the ROM, I left it that way to see what happens. It does still mount (only after reboot, did I mention that ) but now it shows up under "Portable Devices" in device manager and the Device ID string is different in some apps (on PC) "Amazon Kindle Fire" instead of "Kindle Fire" which is what it was before today.
What else can I try? Do I need to do a super duper wipe? Factory, reinstall ROM, cache/dalvik? Do I need to purge even usb android driver on my system? (And how would I do that?)
Thanks for any help. I would love to get rid of this issue and just be able to plug in the KF and not worry about rebooting all the time.
Funny thing is I worked with someone the other day and when he mounted nothing would come up..... Reinstalled his adb drivers from kfu and it worked like a champ... Dont really know why... This is what I would try instead of messing with windows try creating a live usb as a formidable test to see if its simply just windows stupid drivers that are killing you... Create it with persistent and use this script to set up the drivers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850038 very good chance it will work then you will know its a driver problem...
I'll see if I can give the Live USB thing a try if KFU driver reinstall doesn't help.
But I have a laptop that I never messed with the drivers on. With stock usb was always detected, after rooting and rom installed, had the same usb detection problems as my desktop.
Well I never did give the Live linux USB thing a try. I just keep going with my work around of rebooting with the usb connected and then doing my file transfers. I would only do this about once a week. I even noticed that with a couple of the more recent builds if I would plug KF in several times it would detect usb and I would not have to reboot.
But now with the last build (or two?) not exactly sure when it changed even that isn't working. Plugging in several times never detects usb now (95%+ detects usb charging though). And now it also won't detect usb after reboot while the cable is plugged in during the reboot. So I've had to do my file transfers in recovery mode. Recovery mode always works. What is different about what recovery mode "says" to the computer compared to what the full ROM "says"
Oh, and I only get USB 1.1 transfer speeds. But I think I read that this is a kernel driver issue that is well known, or has that been fixed somewhere?
Thanks

For those who upgraded to Windows 8...

Are you still able to connect your phone via usb with no problems? With drivers and odin still working?

The only way I could get the drivers to install right on windows 8 was to boot into download mode and plug in to usb on computer... let it search and find them in download mode... worked for me when nothing else was...

I actually came across a link to samsungs web site for some USB drivers.......I thought what the hell, I've tried everything else LOL, I installed them on my 8 box...and it actually worked, Odin sees my Epic now
did anyone get this to work? ive tried repeatedly to get my epic 4g (with keyboard) to be recognized by my new windows 8 computer and I cant for the life of me. The above does not work for me. Along with other suggestions ive read online.
i downloaded these drivers and even tried compatibility mode.
what i noticed is windows 8 isnt listed in the list of compatibility mode
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SPH-D700ZKASPR
My win 8 machine did just fine when I connected my Epic. Able to transfer files between them both and Odin worked with no issues.
I did find, however, if you download the new drivers - win 8 has a hard time seeing the Epic. I also have Zentimo Storage Manger installed and it actually reads the Epic as a Linux Card Reader.

Took the liberty to find the driver download that I have on my laptop. ----> Samsung Driver <----
Let me know if this helped.
Just in case you don't know (which I am sure you do), open with winrar or 7-zip and click on setup.exe.

i extracted and ran the exe and I get "the samsung android driver was not successful(9)" or something like that. Guessing the "9" is a error code?
one thing i might add is device manager doesnt even recognize the device when i plug it in. no sound notification like you would usually here.
Are you running 32 or 64? Those drivers are 64.
Also try a different port. I know if I don't use the sane point I have issues too.
One other thing might be your connecting wire. If you have another USB wire, I would try that too.

ive tried the only other usb 2.0 port i have and tried even the 3.0 for the heck of it as well as another cable. But ill look for another cable and see again.
you think since the computer is still new enough where i can get away with a system restore to when i first got it without losing anything if that would be any help? maybe I messed up some how. maybe plugging in the phone before installing drivers messed it up?
also funny thing is i connected the phone to the computer in download mode as well and still was recognized not even as if it was charging.
forgot to add I was able to install your drivers once i did compatibility mode but my phone still wasnt being recognized.
I'm sure you know this as well, but is USB debugging checked?
You can try a system restore but my experience with that and windows 8 hasn't been good.
You stated when you connect your device the computer does nothing? Not even chime?
If that is true, it is your USB ports on computer not your phone.
Have you connected another device with the same cable? If so, what if anything happens?

Yes tried usb debugging. Switched back and forth between pda and modem on diag uart menu thing. Tried different cables as well as different ports and yes other phones it sees and chimes the epic 4g charging light lights up but won't chime with computer.
I've also installed kies to see if that would help.
One last thing to try.
Go to settings/wireless - mobile networks/ scroll down till you find USB connection.
You may accidentally have check charging only. Check ask on connection.

I've been through usb debugging and the charge only the tether option as well as mass storage
Could the version have anything to do with it or that's its been flashed already from another computer.
Flashed from another computer should have nothing to do with it. I can take my device from desktop (where my device was flashed) to my laptop without any issues.
The only thing I can think of is, it has to your USB port on your device. For some reason, it is only letting you charge from a computer. That's why I thinking of the charge only feature. That would prevent your computer from seeing your device.
Even if it was the wrong driver it still would say "unrecognized device".
I would say go into control panel and uninstall driver but with it not seeing the device you can't do that.
Sorry. Right now I'm at a loss. I will keep thinking about it.

[Q] Device not registering USB when in ODIN mode

Kind of at my wits end here. Phone is rooted and running Slim ROM. Wanted to put it back to stock. All current recommended procedures use ODIN. I have installed the USB drivers independently and through latest version of KIES but phone is not recognized when I plug it in and no USB registration tones are heard.
If I plug into USB with device off, it registers. If I plug in with device on, it registers. If I plug in in ODIN mode - nothing!
Any idea what might be causing this? Alternatively, how to put back to stock without ODIN? Thanks in advance

You have Kies AND drivers installed? You should only install the drivers without Kies if that is the case as the driver suite and Kies will conflict.
Have you tried another pc and/or usb cable?
---------- Post added at 02:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:27 PM ----------
The other choice is to use mobile odin to flash the rom from external SD if you can mount external storage and copy over the file.
Or you can flash a regular flashable zip of the rom if you can get the phone to flash to the appropriate kernel first.
Believe I only have one set of drivers installed. Was just trying alternate drivers to get it working, Yes, tried other computers/cables to no avail. Was able to flash using Mobile ODIN but still puzzled why USB/ODIN not working. Didn't think the USB port could malfunction that selectively.

Unable to connect phone to pc via usb

Hi,
I have rooted my phone with rootbox rom and i cannot seem to connect to pc using usb cable,I have tried everything (replacing cable, installed another rom liquidsmooth, updating drivers, troubleshooting with kies) nothing seems to work no matter what i do the windows still shows mtp driver installation failed.I would be very thankful if someone could help me out here,..Oh yeah and i am able to connect it to pc from recovery by mounting usb storage but not in normal mode
I had this issue with 3 different phones of my own. I ultimately had to remove the Samsung drivers and reinstall them. Do a google search for captivate drivers, you should find an xda post on this somewhere.

Windows 8.1/7 won't detect Galaxy Tab S in download mode

Hi All,
I recently purchased two Galaxy Tab S tablets (10.5, SM-T800) which I have been trying to root for the past couple of days but have been getting nowhere.
The issue stems from the inability of my computers being able to detect the tablets in Download Mode.
I have tried the following:
I have tried installing different versions of Odin
I have download kies.
I have tried re-installing the Samsung usb drivers on numerous ocations in two different computers.
I have tried different usb cables to include the cable that came with the tablet.
If Tablet is powered on however, the computer will detected it and thus so will Odin. This is only happens in Download Mode.
If googled this issue and it seems to be a none issue however I have yet to find a fix to this. I was hoping I would have better luck in this forum.
Have you tryed using a different usb port? How about using a different pc? Does it even connect when you tab s is on? My pc can detect my tab s fine but had some issues with windows 8.1 and odin crashing. My guess would be trying on a pc that can detect other devices in download mode just fine. Did you also enable usb debugging?
I'm stumped given what you have tried. I'm assuming you are using CF-autoroot. On Windows 7, Odin wouldn't see download mode until I installed the Samsung drivers downloaded from Samsung. Then everything went fine (after which I rolled Windows back to the previous restore point because the Sammy drivers messed up my Nexus 5 connection. Also, if it matters, I used Odin 3.0.9 but with Chainfire's Odin.ini file.
Are you waiting to plug the tablet in until after you have entered download mode? I don't know why, but the instructions for CF-autoroot were very explicit about that.

You dont need adb as it worked fine without adb for me. Usb debugging does the trick. But installing adb could help
Yes I already tried different USB ports. Different USB cables. Different computers. USB Debugging is enabled.
Again Odin does detect the tablet as long as the tablet is booted up to Android. Odin detects is, Windows Detects it, Kies Detects it.
As soon as I reboot the tablet into Download Mode and plug it back into the computer, is as if nothing is plugged in. No driver gets installed. No new hardware is detected and thus Odin wont detect it.
FIXED!!!!!
Ok so what essential was happening is I was turning off the tablet. Putting it into download mode using VolDown+Home+Power. However that seemed to be actually taking me to recovery and now download mode.
I ended up booting back into android with usb debugging mode enabled and running the following adb command
adb reboot download
This rebooted the tablet into download mode which looks totally different than the recovery, it then installed the drivers and Odin was able to finally detect it!
Thank you all for your assistance!
