So i'm kind of new to the rooting scene and this is what happened.
yesterday morning Verizon released an update for my g3 and not realizing I had TWRP installed on my phone I said " okay nice an update"
My phone reboots and goes straight to TWRP and from there I immediately got lost and panicked. because i'm used to my phone auto installing it.
I went into the "wipe" part of TWRP and not realizing that formatting data would wipe my backups I went with it and typed "yes" as directed to.
Good thing for me I can still boot into TWRP after this but it says "No OS is installed".
Earlier I put my phones backup on my desktop of my computer but i don't know how to get it on my phone. So even though my phones backup was wiped i still have it on my computer saved as "stockbackup"
Download mode doesn't work as well.
I don't know if this is a good idea or not but i might break my phone and pay the 99$ deductible for a replacement because I need a phone ASAP.
Do you have an external SDCard? If you do download one of the modded roms copy to sdcard and flash that with TWRP. Should fix it.
Plus this is a question, should not be in general section should be in Q&A.
A bit of searching as well and you would have found an answer.
People ask these same questions over & over again instead of searching first. Then wonder why the forums get so cluttered. ?

What the heck. No, seriously.
I'm picturing you right now...

*click Wipe*
*select everything*
*WARNING: IT WILL WIPE THE HELL OUT OF THE PHONE*

It's like finding a gun on the street, panicking, picking it up, feeding it, disengaging safe, aiming to your feet, firing and then worrying that you got shot.
You have TWRP. Get CloudyG3 or AndroidNOW, put it on your SDCard or push it through ADB and flash like any other ROM. I recommend Cloudy.

You have two options:
Option 1:
-install a custom rom
-transfer a custom rom to an external sd card (using another phone). A custom rom can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-mod-7-rom-mod-1-4-1-g3-d855-t2887669
-put the sd card into your G3 and boot into TWRP. Then go to install and navigate to the custom rom on the external sd, install the custom rom and then reboot
Option 2:
-go back to stock firmware, you'll lose root and twrp and there's a higher chance of something going wrong
-if you choose this option, follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089

I know I can get my device back, I'm just not sure how. I successfully rooted using CASUAL, no problems there. Got the normal root applications installed, did the Clockwork backup, everything was great.
I then decided to try a custom ROM - the Cyanogen 10.1. It downloaded fine, and I selected to also install Google Apps, then it rebooted and the Cyanogen boot screen with the spinning circle came up. However, this lasted way longer than I thought it should, so I looked it up, and what I got from the research is that I had the wrong gapps on there.
So, I followed the instructions in this thread (same problem as me), and wiped the system. However, I believe I used the wrong list item, and now everything I had is gone. I can't boot from recovery because it doesn't exist, and when booting into CM I just get the same error message that setup has stopped working. I thought maybe I could put a new ROM on the sd card or phone harddrive and boot from that, but both are inaccessible through USB on my Mac.
I can get it into ODIN mode (where it says "Downloading... Do not turn off target!"), which I'm thinking is what I want, and I have Heimdall installed and it runs and recognizes my device, but I cannot for the life of me find a tar.gz file to use.
If anyone can offer any sort of help, I would super appreciate it.

Your recovery shouldn't be affected by a wipe (unless you flashed something over it) as ROMs don't flash recovery, therefor vol up + home + power should get you in it. If you success to, You should be able to mount through recovery.
As for Heimdall, it just got S3 support (last week I believe), therefor it might not be easy to find a stock file for it. That being said, if you have access to any Windows pc, that'd be the easiest solution here (using Odin).
Yes, I can still get into the recovery menu, but when I use "backup and restore>restore" it says No files found. Is there anything I can do to just get a working OS running? Or am I just doing it totally wrong, I'm new to the rooting stuff. The Windows computer will be my last resort haha.

Windows pc is definitely the easiest option here but you try mounting your SD from recovery, redownload the ROM and Gapps you wanna use, put them on your device and flash them after a factory reset.
If you wiped your SD card, it's normal that you don't have a backup anymore.

It's aaaliiiiiiive! Grabbed an extra micro SD I had, threw Cyanogen 10.1.0 RC4 on it, and installed it just fine. Now updating to RC5. My only question now is how to get Google Apps on there. Does this need to be done beforehand, or can it be done after?

You usually flash the Gapps right after flashing the ROM, before rebooting.
P.S.: fully reading the instructions helps before flashing

also one thing you need to know
First boot after you flash will always take longer than normal. After that, it's fine
It is auto loaded when you load flashify. Then u can select wether u want twrp or cw recovery.
Hope this helps someone as twrp. Wifi t520 is not available on twrp site.
+1 confirmed it worked on mine (t520).
Can also be retrieved here if you want to flash via Odin.
http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/picassowifi
I fond myself in a situation where my tablet wouldn't boot and I needed to install a custom recovery, so I had to flash via Odin.
I was just going to post a thread about this. Flashify app is the easiest way I have ever used to install custom recovery!
More details?
All,
I rooted my 10.1 yesterday, since ROMS are starting to come out. I used TWRP and CWM on a Toshiba Thrive prior to own the tab pro.
Anyways...I rooted last night with Odin, but still only have the stock recovery.
Please tell me how to get TWRP installed, without messing up the tablet (it is an expensive device, just want to make sure I don't brick it!)
Just flash the zip from the stock recovery?
Unroot and re-root using flashify or Odin?
I can't wait to get rid of all the Samsung crap!!! (but want to backup first)
Thanks a lot,
Damien
Re twrp for t520 and roms
Wish there was some way to help young 14 year old ik4ver [written first custom rom for our device]...some deadbeat loser keeps sabotaging his account now hijacked to extort a rom for the 12.2!!! I have never seen anything like this...hopefully karma works her magic on this scumbag!
I know right...I fortunately got his v3 rom yesterday before his posts got hacked again.
Tried to flash his rom today and almost bricked the tab, twrp couldn't mount ./system. Got stuck on the Samsung logo after this. Fortunately after 3 tries my twrp backup finally restored properly.
Does anyone know the exact steps to follow in twrp before flashing his rom?
Before not being able to mount system, it was saying can't mount cache, which seems to have resolved itself. Weird...

Yep...I tried again...
So, in order, I...
- Rooted using Odin
- Install TWRP using Flashify (thanks to K8108 for the earlier post)
- Went to recovery
- Went to "Mount" and made sure all was checked
- Went to "Wipe", "Advanced"
- Checked everything except internal and external storage
- Install ik4evr's ROM
- Rebooted...
Tablet booted no problem (it stays on "SAMSUNG" for a little bit, which worried me...)
All Samsung apps are gone!!!
that's awesome thanks for the procedure details!
Actually it was young ik4evr that let me know bout twrp being auto loaded in flashify .. that's why I started thread as it's kinda confusing as twrp site doesn't list t520 wifi only.

This all forum is freaking confsuing, as it is about 6 (8?) different devices, where some are kinda similar, and others completely different (thinking especially of Exynos vs Qualcomm).
Plus there is no real guide, and takes hours trying to figure out if this thread/recovery/rom applies to our device or not.
Plus 8.4 became modrian, and 10.1 picasso.
Yay, confusing is the right word!!!
well I've loaded Treo with flashify and done full stock rooted rom
Backup. Now have to grow a pair and flash ver3 of ik4evrs rom! So you have zero issues and everything working?
I was going to wait at least till his thread gets sorted out...hmmm...i voided warranty anyway at this point lol

Zero issue wouldn't the word lol! I did have a bit of a cold sweat yeterday...
I'd say as long as you have the stock rom backup go for it!
I actually started a thread separated from here. I wonder if "wipe internal storage" ok or not...what I can see is that bunch of folders remained from apps installed before flashing the rom.
As far as the steps listed above, I just did it this morning and all went well. As far as deep testing to see if everything is still working, I can't answer yet (at work, no time to play with it).
Let me know if you have any issue...
Ball grown yet?
Alright...so:
- Went to recovery
- Went to "Mount" and made sure all was checked
- Went to "Wipe", "Advanced"
- Checked everything except external storage
- Install ik4evr's ROM
- Rebooted...
Just reflashed the rom, this time wiping the internal storage as well.
After apps update, 472mb used, 11Gb free (was 6gb used before wiping the internal storage).
So far, the only issue is something I read on a post somewhere, but contacts aren't syncing.
I am sure a V4 will be here soon!!
Everything else seems to be working.

I did the same. All worked.
Unfortunately I cannot restore apps succesfully from Titanium backup. The restore seems to be ok, but I only get FC's. The apps will not start. I cannot find the cause of the errors.
Something in directions of maps destination changed? Knox?
I do not understand it.
I had a hard time with TB also. Had to get most of my apps back from the play store. Lost some data. Oh well. My contacts are syncing from Google, tho.

I always reinstall from the play store... I like it clean and fresh, and I don't have that many apps to restore.
Now...How did you get your contacts? I just installed google+, and my circles finally synced in the contact app. As far as all other contacts (gmail), can't sync them...
Sent from my SM-T520 using Tapatalk
I don't know why my contacts are syncing. The only difference I can see is that in our flashing the rom, I didn't do the advanced wiping. I just did factory reset and cache wipe. I left my system unwiped. I'm not real savvy on this stuff - I have just been a good instruction follower for the past few years and have spent lots of hours reading here on XDA. I am heavily addicted to my tablets and use them for several hours a day so I have over 100 apps. It's a real pain for me to have to go thru the play store for a restore

Like I'm sure this topic hasn't come up before, but I've searched for hours and I'm probably just making things worse. I also just accidentally deleted this post halfway through. It's too late and I'm too tired and I have no working phone.
Bought an SGH-I747 on E-Bay. Got a Straight Talk SIM card kit, activated it, so far so good.
Rooted it with CF-Auto-Root. Worked pretty well, took a lot of reboots, upgraded the SU from the Play Store and it got rid of Knox. So far so good. Got everything all set up the way I like it. Happy.
It was running 4.4.2. I'm assuming it was the release prior to the November 12th OTA release, but I can't say for sure.
Phone downloaded and installed an upgrade automatically. Now, it won't boot. I get the SAMSUNG logo, then the Samsung Galaxy S III logo then nothing.
I retried the CF-Auto-Root, no change.
I booted into recovery (volume up, home and power on), did factory reset, no change.
Started looking around for a way to return it to stock. Found an upgrade43.zip file somewhere (I'm sorry I can't find where I got that now). Put it on the sdcard card and tried installing it with the recovery and it fails part way through.
At this point, I think I probably need to completely overwrite everything with something stock. I just don't know how to do that. I see posts on such subjects but they all have warnings that make me think I'm going to totally brick the phone, so I'm hoping someone can point me the right way. I'm not all that Android savvy, as you can tell.
Help.
Since your phone was running 4.4.2, do not attempt to flash any ROMs using that attempt to downgrade your bootloader to anything prior to 4.4.2.
Try this to get your phone up and running:
download the latest CM11 for the d2lte and save it to an external SD card: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2lte
dowload the latest tar.md5 version of Philz Touch for the d2lte from here: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
boot phone in download mode, open Odin 3.07, do not check anything except f.reset.time, flash Philz via PDA box, remove USB cable when you see the word Reset appear in the status window, remove battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, format system, Dalvik, data, and cache, flash cm11, and reboot.
Thank you for your reply. There are a few things in there I don't quite understand, but I think I can figure it out.
I was going to attempt this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
In fact, I did attempt it with TWRP last night after I posted here and new I still wasn't going to sleep. I kept getting an error about a bad ZIP file.
Is that stock restore a bad idea?
Do not attempt to flash an older bootloader. The mjb bootloader is from 4.3 and attempting to flash it could hard brick your phone.
I suggest doing what I suggested so you can confirm the bootloader and modem installed on your phone.
OK. Thanks. Probably a good thing I couldn't get it to work then.
Thank you so much. I have a working phone again. Now I just have to get it all set back up the way I like it.
I have to say, and it's probably words straight from the devils mouth, that I kind of wish I could have restored the Samsung stock software. It's just what I'm used to. But I will take what I can get.
A few questions. I like having root. But root is what got me in trouble in the first place. Is this going to be rooted now, or will I have to do that or am I better off just leaving it alone.
Second, I'm probably going to have questions since this is so different than what I'm used to (like I already can't find the Play store). Where is the best place to ask?
If you want root, one of the easiest ways to get it is to flash supersu from your custom recovery. Most ROMs are pre-rooted.
Many custom ROMs do not include Gapps. Just download and install the Gapps version for your ROM.
If you like the TW look, flash a TW-based ROM. Check out the development threads for different ROMs.
here is a thread for Q's that has some pretty good/friendly helpers on it if you need.

How to save in to external SD card
How do you save the file into the external SD card? I am having the same brick issue with my GS3.
To save a file to an external SD card, just put the card into a card reader and save the ROM to the SD card.
I've been looking for answers but nothing has been working. I went to the twrp site but they basically say search XDA. I have been! No answers on the google+ communities so I'm starting my thread.
Basically I've reflashed the recovery using flashify, using both older and newer releases. My phone reboots randomly so I figured I'd flash a new ROM but nope, more headaches. It gets stuck on the logo screen before actually getting into the recovery area where I can wipe & flash stuff. Any help? Obviously I'm using a G3 still... Umm if more info is needed let me know.

not trying to be captain obvious
It may sound silly but can you verify 1) which version of TWRP is currently on your phone 2) redownload that version 3) reinstall that from within the regular phone environment? This might repair whatever damage may have been done that is causing the partial boot into recovery.
Best of luck,
jmacguire

Right now it's 3.0.2.0_D851 but um yea I can re download it. And what do you mean the regular phone environment? Like the twrp app manager or through my PC?
Disable adaptative storage if you have it enabled, under Storage & USB > External Storage > Format to Portable Storage. You will lose all your data, so back everything up first.
Started having the same issue, unable to boot to recovery past it's splash screen (same version as mentioned above). So wiping the external card fixes this? Anyone know why this happened in the first place? I have 20 GB of music on my card ,was hoping to avoid having to move that off & back on if possible. I don't find anywhere to disable adaptive storage under Storage, just to wipe & set as portable.
Can I set it back as it was after this fix?
UPDATE: I just turned off phone pulled SD card & it now can get into TWRP. Guess I'll just need to to that from now on to avoid wiping my card.
I picked up a sprint htc one m9 today. unfortunately no stock OS and no SD CARD with backup either. I booted into twrp but i can not do anything. everything fails. i tried to flash a rom and its a no go. I am stuck and have no idea what to try after looking for hours.
I have no OS
I can boot into twrp
twrp does not allow me to do anything FAILS on every operation.

Foremost: ugh. Sorry man - that sucks.
So it sounds like your best option would be to get an sd card and apply a RUU from there. Flippy498's Google Sheet is a great resource for where to get them and how to use them.
You might be able to use the Windows-executable RUU directly from Sprint. I'm pretty sure you'd need to be in download mode when you ran it though. It's not as straightforward as the sd card method, but they're usually my first fallback.
Keep in mind that both of these options are destructive - your phone will be brought to a factory state (stock firmware, recovery) and anything on the phone's internal memory will be wiped.
It might be worth exploring why TWRP keeps failing. If we could solve that, you could install the ROM of your choice and not worry about RUUs. But that's definitely more work and probably not necessary if you're not trying to save anything. Once the RUU has been successfully applied, you can just unlock the bootloader anew, install TWRP, and do whatever you want from there.
Thanks a ton that fixed it!
