Hi,
just recieved my Amazon Fire TV - 51.1.0.1_user_510055620
upon recieving it i have added my UK amazon account but it is still displaying everything in american and says i dont have prime.
What pre-rooted firmware do i need to access my UK services? netflix/amazon prime
I want to ensure i dont lose root access or brick it.
Please someone help?
Is it safe to unlock the bootloader and install latest pre-root?
I know this is fairly new so dont want to risk bricking or lose any functionality.
Yes it's safe to unlock bootloader an install latest pre-root. You can get up to firmware 51.1.4.0 and keep root if you follow the guides here and on aftvnews.com.
In terms of getting UK Prime to work, I think you need to be on at least 51.1.3.0. I also noticed that it took like 10-15 mins for it to recognise my UK prime account after logging in to my Amazon.co.uk account. Before that, it kept showing the "try prime for free" tags everywhere.

Hey there,
just got my Fire TV today (German Edition) and I would like to know if I have anything to do before I set it up...I want to root it later when it is possible.
So should I avoid any updates or something like that?

I just made a firetv for a friend yesterday but I'm in the US so not sure if its the same but this is what i did.
I started the firetv and got the update. it auto updated first to an old rootable firmware. and said there is a new update.
I installed towelroot and rooted it and disabled the updates.
then follow the instructions here to get the latest firmware that is rootable. worked perfectly for me.

The German version comes with 51.1.3.0 which is currently not rootable. So the best you can do is block updates (there are tons of threads here on how to do it with DNS and whatnot) and hope a bug is found in the version you currently have.
Hi,
im having an Amazon Fire TV imported here to the UK, mainly for XBMC but i want to know how i can access all USA services with it.
Do you have to login with an amazon account? I have a UK amazon so not sure that will work.
Also im guessing i will need to use a VPN or someway to spoof my IP to USA.
Anyone got any info on this?
Thanks

The Fire TV will need to be updated to at least version 51.1.3.0_user_513011520 for your Amazon.co.uk account to work with it. If you want to keep root then you will need to install ClockworkMod and pre-rooted version of the latest Fire TV software. This guide will help you with that:

much appreciated
the item description says this:
The current version is the last rootable version for amazon fire - the version number is 51.1.0.11_user_510055620. If you do purchase this item.
DO NOT UPDATE THE ITEM.
so it looks like i will be making use of your guide once it arrives
version looks good for CWM @AFTVnews.com so can i just start from step 5 in your CWM guide?

Yup, if it really is running 51.1.0.1_user_510055620 you can skip to step 5.

and after installing the latest version pre-rooted, i still have access to CWM to downgrade again if needed ?
Someone commented on your site that they lost access but im guessing they did it wrong

Correct. Once you have CWM recovery installed, you're open to downgrade or upgrade to any version. The only thing to keep in mind is that if you want to downgrade to something other than one of rbox's pre-rooted versions, you will have to revert the Fire TV back to using the stock recovery. That guide is here: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-revert-an-amazon-fire-tv-back-to-stock-recovery-and-stock-software/
oh i think i will wait to see if rbox can pre-root the UK rom, i think i would be better using that as i have UK amazon with prime.
Right, I just plugged in my new Fire TV and I cannot progress without Upgrading. I have logged on to my router and I have the IP address of the AFTV . Is there anything I can try remotely (via SSH perhaps) to bypass the upgrade?
Thanks in advance.
hi,
i dont have one yet but done some research and you can do the following:
Block Connection to amazon servers
Enter your router settings page and block access to the following pages:
Code:
http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
http://softwareupdates.amazon.com
Unsure this will work on the UK version though
Could you let us know what FW version comes with it?
I had already blocked those pages, and I also tried just blocking the second page. Both had the same effect and resulted in me not being able to progress with the install.
This also means I am unable to report the Firmware version.
To add to this, I inadvertently unblocked the websites after rebooting my rooter and the FTV updated itself.
I am on Firmware Version 51.1.4.0_user_514006420 and cannot root. Hopefully someone is working on an exploit for this, but in the meantime I'll be using it without root.
What's root good for on these things anyway!?

Don't feel bad about inadvertently unblocking the website. There is currently no known method to block the forced updates on newer Fire TVs. Units that ship with 51.1.3.0 or newer are now all forcing the first update during setup.
If the Fire TV displays a language selection prompt during setup, which I assume yours did, then it is already running 51.1.3.0 or newer software.

Grr! My UK version just arrived, and it will not let me do anything unless it upgrades. I so wanted root for USB access!

It doesn't really matter. It ships with an unrootable version to begin with.

This has been known since the German release. You just got to wait & hope for a new root method.
I bought a Fire from PC World yesterday, after several frustrating hours discovering that there's not much hope of it being rooted I had a look on Ebay, I've seen several rooted ones that seem to be quite good value, but they are in the states.
I have absolutely no intention of using my Amazon account on them, I only really want it for XBMC and all the rooted goodness and I'm sure there'll be a killer app that makes a rooted fire a very hot property indeed.
Question is, will a US fire TV work OK over here ?
Anyone know.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, it will work fine out of the box, apart from needing a US to UK plug adapter. Only things to be aware - you'll need to block updates so the box does not update to a firmware that removes root (which it will eventually try to do). And, if you want to update to a newer firmware manually and keep root, then you will need to use a custom recovery and a pre-rooted firmware update file. Manual updates is probably not vital though if you are only using it for XBMC.
Some useful guides over at aftvnews.com. First one may not be relevant if you're buying pre-rooted.

A coworker gave me a rooted (towelroot) fire TV sw version 51.1.0.1_user_510055620. After I hooked it up to my WiFi and registered it with my account there's no apps on it and it won't allow me to download Netflix. What is my next step? How do I get this thing up and running?

Do you know if CWM is installed? Im thinking the netflix available on Amazon is incompatible with your old firmware.
Basically, i youre going to want to update to one of rbox's prerooted firmware versions. Its not hard but you do need to follow the guides carefully. Best bet is to go to aftvnews. He breaks it down really well.
I'm not sure. How do I check? I also need to update the xbmc to kodi (I've started to search!)
So far I've only been able to unlock the bootloader but I can't push the recovery.img for some reason. I hope there's an easier way by now. Lol

just follow this guide up to the point of your existing software and then update to the latest custom rom by rbox.
