Hi,
I'm planing to get a fire tv, root it and put a USB HD with movies into it to play on Kodi.
The FireTv will be connected with a ethernet cable to the network.
Questions:
1. Once I root it, will the firetv still get it's firmware updated?
2. Will I be able to access the USB drive (connected to the FTV) from my desktop?
3. Does the included remote works well with Kodi?
4. Any other things I should be aware of? things that don't work well, etc...?
Thanks all!

1. yes. Browse the General forum here, it will explain the good, the bads and the don't do or you won't have root anymore.
2. yes, if you run a ftp server on the aftv. Few other ways to access it, but if you are looking to just move movies over to it, then ftp would be good enough.
3. yes
4. Read the forums here before you do anything and you won't be surprised.
Thanks for the reply.
I just found out that the latest firmware is not rooted yet.
Do I need to be rooted to sideload SPMC?
Will I be able to FTP to it without rooting?
Cheers!

You can install SPMC (or XBMC or whatever).
Pretty sure I'm using this, and it doesn't seem to require root. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer

Thank you.
I always thought that you need to root to be able to access the USB port.

That's two different things. You don't need root for FTP, but you do if you want to add USB storage.
Hi Members.
I am planning to buy me an AFTV.
I have got many movies on an external hdd. At the moment I am using my bluray player to watch these movies.
I can use xbmc on the AFTV.
I have red that the AFTV doesn't connect to external devices connected to the USB port. Does that mean that I won't be able to watch the movies on the external HDD even if I use xbmc?

No root available for current firmware as of yet. So no unfortunately you won't be able to use the USB for YOUR HDD. You need to block OTA updates via your router if you want to stay on current firmware in the hope a root will become available.

I don't know which firmware is on the aftv.
My friend got the device yesterday from amazon delivered. He doesn't know what to do with it he offered it to me.
So it would be better to get a older aftv with an older firmware?

If a root is a must then I'd suggest that yes.. Unsure off the top of my head which is the firmware that's root able but Im sure it's easy findable on here.
This guide can help you to determine which version you have:

Seeing you are from germany:
All fireTVs sold from amazon germany have the new (so far) unrootable firmware, so you won't be able to connect your usb hdd directly to the ftv, you can, however, play movies from a network share like a NAS.
How possible is it, that there will be a root for the newest Version?
I have only external HDD's an no NAS, therefore i need a option to use the USB-Port on the ATV...

you can always plug the drives into another PC in the house and use SMB to access the content over the network, this works perfectly and have all my media shared like this
Thanks for the hint but i don't wan't to use my PC for Media Sharing...

Many newer routers allow the same functionality. The USB port on the FireTV is useless for mass storage devices without root. The FireTV hasn't been rootable since July. I'm not holding my breath, but it would be nice. I'll pick up a few more if it does ever become rootable again.

It's possible root my Xperia Arc without using the cable? My port don't work, the pins are broken.
I can connect to it by SSH, but idk if this helps...
Thanks.
Only if you have unlocked bootloader or a recovery(CWM) installed in the ROM's /system folder.
1st can not be done without micro-USB port, 2nd can be installed via Play Store.
Hmm, if the phone wasn't updated to latest gb or ics (no need to downgrade via flashtool) maybe it is possible to use wireless adb.

I have the last version of official ICS of Sony.
It's possible to connect with ADB wirelessly without root, but I need to pair it before, connecting it with USB, and that's not an option for me.

You don't need usb for wireless adb. But! You are updated so it won't help
[email protected] S
Just like they said, try wireless adb and execute script by bin4ry. With a little amount of luck you may succeed.
And BTW, thread moved to Q&A
Its possible do it with a non-rooted phone without conecting it before?? How can I do it? I didn't found a solution...
EDIT: See my next post.
I didn't found anithing about this. Its impossible connect with ADB by wireless if you are not root or you don't pair the device with the cable. I searched about this on Google hundreds of times, and there's no way!! If anyone another way, post it here pls.. But i repeat... i didn't found anything...

Well if you found nothing, no one else going to, so looks like the answer to your original question, is no.

I said before - you have updated phone so nothing to do without flashtool downgrade. I forgot that wireless adb need root - my mistake.
Another way - repair phone. Don't waste more time trying, someone will install new usb port in few minutes for few $.

Have you tried "z4root"?

I'm not really sure of any other method apart from using the sixaxis app which you need root for. As I understand it, apparently Sony Z2 users can use the PS3 Controller without rooting the device as Sony implemented the means to link up the two without any 3rd party app(Which is logical...Sony after all).
You'll have to compromise somewhere though, seriously. It's a 3rd party controller, how do you expect it to work without at least rooting the device so that you can MAKE changes in order for it to work? It's like trying to install a program(That needs Administrative privileges) on a PC without granting it Administrative privileges

Where do you people get this information from? Link me to the place that says you can't get OTA if you're rooted
You'll get OTA if you're rooted, you just need to make sure that you have stock recovery installed. If you're S-ON you'll have to relock bootloader, if you're S-OFF then you don't need to, but not getting OTA because you're rooted?
Im going into the sotre now to pick up an amazon box. which firmware should i be looking to get that will make it easier to root
And from what im hearing the newer firmware is unrootable correct?

Those will give you your best shot. Make sure you read everything on that site prior to plugging in your fire or it will automatically update to an unrootable firmware.

if im not connected to the internet it will not update correct?
You kind of have to comnect to the internet, basically to get through setup, a internet connection must be provided. After you purchase box, take a look at aftvnews website for further detail.
Hey Guys i just purchased a AFTV and did all the updates. Now i realize that was a bad idea to install the updates. A friend of mine told me once its out of box you can watch movies right off my flash drive.
Now i see i need to root my device before i can do that. HAS ANYBODY found a way to mount a flash drive so i can watch movies off it without having to root the device?
Any info would be great,

Wait a couple of days for the new firmware update. It's supposed to finally add external storage.
I have a fire stick tv 2nd gen (tank) on firmware 5.2.8.7. Hard to find current info for this device. Attempted unlock from my open media vault server with amonet-tank-v1.2.2.zip and got as far as 'identifying device' part however nothing happens while shorting. it says it cannot find series while i am not shorting. the guide says to 'update' to 5.2.6.9 (an older firmware). I am to understand that you can indeed downgrade this device via adb commands however any links directed to 'amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net' are expired. Am I wasting my time? Is it too late to customize this device?
I also have a (sheldon) and it has been updated beyond 7.2.7.3. Are there any options left to return to that firmware? Also if I purchase a new one to manually update am I also out of luck considering the first stept before registration is updating?
I am obsessively researching this and wasting a lot of time out of fear for breaking rules or ridicule. Any help would be an asset. Tutorials often assume a lot. Thanks in advance.

The later tank sticks got a factory burned efuse to block the exploit. If you can't see a mediatek phone device in lsusb while shorted, the unlock won't work for your stick

i will have to do my best to find one. thank you very much. you have saved me a lot of time.
i was lucky enough to get my hands on a 'Fire TV Stick Lite' w/ 'Fire OS 7.2.4.2 (PS7242/2897)'. how do i get 7.2.7.3 on here? (sorry for being a total noob.)
