I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this. For a variety of reasons I would like to uproot my Fire TV. It currently has Busybox, Clockwork Mod, Su, Towelroot installed. It also has Amazon updates blocked. Is the process as simple as installing the latest firmware, after unlocking Amazon updates. That is, will the update take care of removing anything added to the unit by me ( Busybox for example)?
Thanks...philip

Thanks. I had read that excellent guide before. It requires ClockworkMod and retains root if you select an appropriate firmware. This doesn't seem to restore a Fire TV to the state it was bought. For instance, ClockworkMod would still be there and perhaps even Amazon update blocking.
I should have been clearer with my intent. I would like to know how to restore a Fire TV to the state that it came when purchased. That is, I want to know how to remove any traces of me having touched it!

If you want to unroot it, Id sell the one you have rooted ( since they are becoming like ghosts now ) and buy one with the money profited.

It's very easy to unroot & get it back to stock with the AFTV Utility app. You don't need CWM. But I feel like a traitor telling you how... :crying: Sell or exchange the unit with someone stuck with a unrootable one. Make them pay for shipping for both units. Don't kill the root...
Let me know if you still want me to give you the step-by-step...

Sorry to make you feel bad, but it it's any consolation I sold a rooted Chromecast to someone who would make better use of it ( at the same price as an unrootable Chromecast). So, although I understand that this is a bit difficult, I would really appreciate the step-by-step process. I am currently running CWM, latest rooted firmware, busybox free, su, Amazon updates blocked. I would like them all gone via the process and the unit back to stock.
Thank you,
Philip

Not in it for any profit. Just like trying out different media players. They kind of come and go on a regular basis. But I do get the logic behind your suggestion.
The ability to return something to stock is important for everyone even if it were just a warranty issue ( not the case here though). I've seen quite a few threads on the subject for tablets and phones, just not the Fire TV.
The current Fire TV is pretty open as shipped. This is very different than the Apple TV situation or Chromecast where rooted units became priced at unbelievable levels. The main advantage of rooted FTV's seems to be centered around the USB port or turning it into an XBMC box with the Amazon GUI hidden.

NP... Also Linux sideloading is coming too... Along with custom kernels, overclocking, Rom's, etc... But they will all need rooot...
So what you do with the APP is...
Make sure you keep the update IP's blocked in your router if you want to root in the future.
Using the latest AFTV Utility Change Recovery to "recovery-stock-51.1.0.img"
This will kill root & it should restart the FTV to Stock Recovery. If not you can hit "Reboot to Recovery" in the app.
From the Stock Recovery do a Factory Reset & also a "clear cache" only. Then reboot the FTV & enjoy the startup video again.
You can do the Factory Reset from the Menu/System too. But you won't be able to clean the cache from there. The Factory Reset is what actually gets rid of any installed apps.
Then you should now have a back to stock AFTV. And you can choose to update to a non-rootable FW. Once you stop blocking the IP's...
You can find how to manually tell it to update in the System Menu.
I"ve never actually booted in the stock recovery so not sure what it looks like and if it has the same options as CWM. But if it doesn't you can go into Menu/System and do the Factory Reset from there.
You can clear cache & do Factory Reset from stock recovery..

Also to correctly close command promps with this app you sometimes need to hit CTRL+C to be able to input EXIT to close it.
NOTE: Since you mention you had CWM already... Here is a post that would help you wipe stuff thru CWM & Factory reset before unrooting thru the recovery shot.. WIll come out with an alternative way to fully clear cache's & format stuff in the future... ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/q-cwm-factory-reset-leaves-stuff-t2928521 ) The jest of it is you never format system unless you are ready to flash FW again before any reboot thru CWM.

As stated in the first sentence of that guide, it will "revert back to the stock recovery and stock software". In other words, ClockworkMod would be gone. Following that guide and doing a factory reset afterwards would leave the Fire TV in a fully stock state without root and without the update blocking.

I had read the guide. I think I was confused by the meaning of stock recovery. I kept thinking that CWM would still be there as well as my modifications. My misunderstanding. Sorry about that.
Well now I have two ways to proceed. I guess applying both will guarantee I will never again be root

Both AFTVNews great guide & the AFTV Utility method are doing the exact same thing... You only need to choose one that you are most comfortable with. Specially since you can't unroot twice. All you would be doing by doing it twice is installing stock recovery on top of stock recovery...
Edited the instructions for your specific purpose.

Since XBMC/KODI is now an official app and the icon shows up on the home screen I don't feel the need to be rooted and have all the extra stuff installed. I followed this guide on both of my FTV's, worked great I'm back to stock like I wanted to be with the latest software installed. Netflix is updated and working great, it was stuck on an older version before. Best of all the 5ghz band stays connected now (2.4ghz was strong but 5ghz would not stay connected) and buffering on 1080p files is non existent.
My only issue now is that on one of my FTV boxes when I check for updates it throws an update error, I think I may have forgotten to "enable OTA updates" in the fire tv utility app before I removed SU, xposed, towel root, clockworkmod etc.. All router level update DNS blocks have been removed and my other FTV can scan for updates with no problem (I did remember to enable OTA updates in the fire tv utility app for this box). I can install apps, I'm just getting that error message when I scan for an update to the FTV software.
Am I screwed now? Will I not be able to get OTA updates in the future? Perhaps I need to do a factory reset to enable them?
Both are on:
51.1.4.3_user_514020320 stock software
51.1.3.0_user_513011520 stock recovery
Thanks in advance!

Ever since I installed the recovery menu and the latest pre-rooted FW I've had a few issues I can't seem to pin to anything. For one thing, now every time I reboot I get the Amazon boot splash screen followed by the updating software screen, as though it's installing a new update, which it isn't. Is this normal?
If so I can live with that, but installing the custom FW has now broken the google play store and Aptoide, leaving me sideloading everything. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of the associated APKs but it doesn't make a difference at all. Starting either market just momentarily starts the app just to immediately close it and kick me back to the launcher. Any ideas here?
Trying to get late October 2014 Netflix working on FireTV
I updated my fireTV to bueller-51.1.4.0_514006420-rooted and the new Netflix didn't play videos- some DRM issue. I downgraded to bueller-51.1.3.0_513011820-rooted and had to install Netflix. It was the old version and played fine. I took the Netflix app from 51.1.4.0 before I downgraded:
com.netflix.ninja-1.apk MD5: ae2a3cfa57a599e6bd13069d9928b725
It doesn't install on 51.1.3.0:

Interesting. Amazon must have bumped their SDK version. I'm going to see if I can easily disable the forced upgrade so the old Netflix might still work on the new version. In the end, I need to figure out what's wrong though.
The "Amazon Kernel Not Patched" error is normal. It's telling you that the image contained a stock Amazon kernel therefore it was not patched. Did you install the alternate Amazon AppStore by chance? I do not have the alternate Amazon AppStore installed and I just upgraded three firetv's in the last 30 minutes. One was on the previous "broken" version so the new Netflix was already installed. It connected immediately and I played a video. I proceeded to upgrade my other two. They both prompted me through the download and installation of the new Netflix. I had to re-enter my credentials in each but they worked.

I am on the 51.1.4.0 prerooted fw and want to update to 51.1.4.1, but I have some hiccups in my current verison. (free time not working, su won't launch) Should I try to fix those issues before attempting to update or will updating hopefully fix those issues??

I don't think PreRooted FW flashing will get rid of any of that. If you can still go into the CWM custom recovery 6.0.5.1.4 which requires the unlock bootloader then your good.. I thought you mentioned you already had the boot menu installed ??
Hopefully you have CWM 6.0.5.1.4a installed insead of 6.0.5.1.4...
Firmware upgrade.
I have couple questions...
When upgrading to newer pre-rooted firmware, should I clear cache in recovery?
Another one... I'm on 51.1.4.0, rooted, boot menu, recovery... If I want to start over what is the best way? What needs to be cleared (data in recovery?), reset option in FTV launcher? Will recovery and boot menu stay?
how can you delete the prerooted images that are on the SD card? I cant find them in Es File explorer.
I can see them here in CWM though...

You would need to do it from ADB or the way I do it is I use ES File Explorer or a similar app. If it's a Google Store app you might need a mouse to control it right. Since they are touch based. Holding the button press for a while over a file will give you the option to move/copy/delete it.

OK, found out what the issue was. I was unaware but if XBMC/KODI is left suspended in the background, i.e. you hit the home button on the remote without exiting XBMC/KODI the
prime video does not work. I can do it everytime.
Not a big deal I guess.
I have two FTVs both running old 51.1.1.0. Both of them have Kodi 14.2 and both crash shortly after I launch Kodi. They were both working fine and then both stopped working the same day. I thought there may have been an update, but that didn't happen. I can't figure it out and I'm really frustrated with these boxes. I'm ready to sell them and get something better. I can't even update them. Every way I try to update fails.
Any suggestions?

You have to provide a lot more info regarding your boxes. I am assuming your boxes are rooted or you blocked updates in your router because this is a very old firmware and if so you will not be able to update them over the air without enabling OTA updates.
Start here and read before you do anything (you can still keep root and update to latest OS3 s/w): http://www.aftvnews.com/start/

They both are rooted. I'm just trying to update Kodi. I thought it would be best to keep the old firmware. I've used the Windows utility app to try and install the new version of Kodi as well as the fire installer on an android phone. Nothing seems to work. This is the way I've always done it. Let me know what other information I can provide.
Not sure why you want to keep an older firmware (newer versions bring fixes and improvements) but that is up to you. Have you installed something on both units that lead to the system crash? It is very weird that both units stopped working at the same time. Have you try to clean cache (not data) and run kodi again? If this does not work do a back up, uninstall kodi, reset firetv, reinstall whatever version of kodi you like and run it (do not restore you back up yet) if all is good (opens up) exit kodi and restore your back up. If it still does not open then something got corrupted in your data files and you will have to reinstall everything from scratch.

You can still update to latest firmware (using rbox prerooted images). Follow link I posted above and read, read, read before you do anything.
I think the same as bula1ca write down here.
First update to the last availible prerooted rom. Read it here how to do: http://www.aftvnews.com/start/
Another question from my side is: Why did you use kodi 14.2.
kodi 16 jarvis is availible and you can use it as launcher too with a pythin script here from the board.
Feel free to ask your question but please read enough before
Greetings by Idijt
I've seen that some people were able to successfully downgrade AFTV1 after rooting with Dirtycow. I'm able to get root, but downgrade doesn't seem to work and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I have an amazon fire TV V1 with 51.1.4.0_User_514006420 software version. I downloaded the 51.1.0.2_user_510058520 update, renamed it to update.zip, followed the guide (here: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-manually-upgrade-or-downgrade-the-amazon-fire-tv/) for changing the ROM. When I do adb reboot recovery I get this message:
“System update was not successful. Your amazon fire tv will restart in a few minutes and should resume normal operation.”
When it restarts, it’s still on the same version I had. I’ve tried pushing the stock recovery image like the bottom of the upgrade/downgrade guide suggested, but it doesn’t seem to work. Does someone have any other ideas on how to get this to work?
I checked that the update checks out with the md5 hash. I just can’t get it to work. What should I try to do next? Is there a better guide? I'd like to install a pre-rooted ROM.
On the off chance that Amazon changed the 51.1.0.2 image they are serving, try downloading and using the one from here. Then follow my guide here to install it. You should also check the md5 hash value of the 51.1.0.2 image AFTER it has been transferred to the FTV1 by following this guide.
If you still have problems, copy and paste your entire ADB/shell text here so I can see if you did anything wrong.
@AFTVnews.com thanks for the response! I checked the md5 and it seemed to have matched. I re-ran through the steps an it appears I may have put command in cache instead of cache/recovery. It pushed successfully.
Now... it seems like that version of AFTV is strange. It has a lock screen and my aftv remote won't allow me to unlock it. Here is an image of what I see: Locked Amazon fire TV Screen so I can't open it to run towel root. Any ideas?
Update: I was able to get passed the lock screen by clicking a bunch of buttons on the remote at the same time. I'm rooted again! I'll continue the guide! Thanks for your work on this!
Update2: I'm running the latest version of the rooted software. Thanks for the guides!

Awesome. Glad it worked out.
Last night, I stopped after the custom latest rooted version of the ROM was installed. I keep getting "Amazon is unable to connect to the service" when going to the different menu options. Do I have to disable my firewall rules on my router, or was it just an oddity?

I confirmed that I'm still getting the unable to connect to service last night. Should I just do a factory reset? Would that help? At this moment, the only way for me to launch apps is to go through System -> Manage Applications and it's really annoying. I was able to confirm that Kodi was able to connect to the internet, so I know that it's not the connection.

Since you're rooted and on the latest prerooted ROM, you should remove the domain blocks on your router/firewall. It sounds like that's the issue. Just be sure you have done method 1 at the very least from my update blocking guide. You can also do method 5 to be extra safe.
I tried removing the firewall blocks but I still get "We are currently unable to contact our servers." Should I re-add the firewall blocks and factory reset?
UPDATE: I was able to resolve this by signing in to my amazon account. Apparently for some reason it signed me out. Thanks for all of your help!

I have OTA updates blocked since day 1 using debloater tool. Device is at OS 5.0.51 (537175520). Everything (Netflix, Kodi, Amazon Prime) was working great for more than a year.
Recently can't play any Amazon Prime content even though I'm signed into my Prime account. It does show recently viewed in list from other devices (phone, other smart tv). Clicking on a video spins the icon a few seconds and then takes you right back to your personalized Prime content page. So the program isn't crashing just not allowing streaming anymore.
Tried rebooting, force stop application, clearing cache. Any other suggestions or do I have to reset to default settings? Will restoring allow Amazon updates and remove Kodi?
Go easy I'm only tech savvy enough to get into trouble
Thanks.
Clear amazon video app cache and data in settings -> applications.
Hey Blue,
I tried that before and it didn't seem to work. Tried it again and after doing that it allows me to start one title. If I stop the video and try to play another one, it won't stream a different title.
Sometimes when I try to restart the same title it won't do that either.
I redo the clear data and cache it lets me do the one title only thing again very reproducibly.
The Prime video player is version 1.0.247.48-ATVAndroidFOS5.... at size 40.43MB if that helps.
Any other things to try? Thanks for your help.
If you have twrp installed I would reflash current rom and see if that fixes the problem. I'm currently using 5.2.1.1 and had same issue with prime video and clearing worked for me.
Don't know what twrp is, how to check for it or how to reflash the rom. Is there a link or instructions somewhere you could point me to?
Read a little about twrp....looks like with my skill level it's the fastest way for me to brick the firestick, haha. My device is not rooted if that makes a difference?
Is there a low tech way? For example, could the Prime Video app be deleted and redownloaded from the App Store?
If not, what would happen if I reset to factory? Would the stick revert to receiving Over the Air updates? Could KODI be reinstalled if that happens?
Thanks for answering my newbie questions!

You have OTA updates blocked. Is it a reason why if you do not want to root it? You will not be able to reset to factory if OTA updates are blocked however if you unblock it will update to the latest s/w version and at the moment is no way to root it but you can still install Kodi.
Why not reading on how to root it, install TWRP and from here on you can install latest rooted release s/w by rbox.

Best reason to not root it is because I will probably break the thing with my lack of knowledge.
So, I have to re-enable the over the air updates or I won't be able to reset to default factory settings?
How about the idea to delete and reinstall Amazon Prime from the App store, is that a possible way to get it working again?
Thanks!

Prime is part of the system menu and can not be erase as you erase an app
Well, maybe I'll move this stick to a smart tv that has Amazon Prime app already since this is the only problem with the stick as is.
Thanks
Hi,
I've had the same problem with all the Fire TV and Sticks I bought. I live in Italy and always had the same error. I have updates domains blocked so I've always thought it was because of this. Now I'd like to solve cause Amazon Prime video is finally available in Italy too. I've always used rbox roms for my devices and I d'0nt want to go back to official firmware. Amazon app on my Nvidia Shield and Browser app work fine. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I received a FireTV box from a friend who didn't want it anymore. The model # on the back says DV83YW. I believe this is FireTV 2nd Gen, correct?
Anyways, the FireTV box was working when I received it, but it would not install the YouTube app from the app store. I attempted to do a Firware update but it would not install that either.
After contacting Amazon support they told me to do a factory reset which completed successfully. However, now, after connecting to the internet and selecting language the firmware automatically goes into firmware update and fails. It looks like it fails to even download the update. Then, Amazon support basically told me that the FireTV box is bricked and they can't help further.
Is there any way to flash the latest firmware via the USB port to get it working again?
Thanks in advance for the help!

You can root your FireTV via this, i think
https://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire-tv-2-box-running-latest-software-version-has-been-rooted/
After that flash TWRP, from there flash latest prerooted System Images.
If the prerooted images don't have updates blocked, when a system update is available then it will download it f for you which will be in update.bla.bla.bin format, copy that from your data partition to internal storage
This will be your stock rom, you can use TWRP to wipe the system and flash Stock if you want

Thanks for the reply. I'll give this a shot but not sure if it will work. As it stands now, the Fire TV halts at the firmware update error screen after I select the language and connect to a network. I can't get into home screen or settings to enable the ADB Debugging. Hopefully it's already enabled, or is there another way to get into the settings via the remote?
So just as I thought I can't connect to the FireTv through adb since I can't get to the home screen or the settings. Any other ideas?
Also cannot update fire tv 2 sloane

This will not help you but i am in a very similar predicament.
Got Fire TV 2 from friend on 5.2.6.0 which is OLD firmware, and i cannot get it to update. Many factory resets.
Amazon support is COMEPLETELY useless, but i would suggest contacting Amazon and beg them to return it for another.
On this one, although i AM able to access UI screen and use it, i cannot update it, in turn i cannot install Youtube TV - the one with cable tv channels not regular youtube. The primary purpose for me having this.
For anyone with a similar problem in 2022 , the fire tv 2 box aka sloane
had its last update at 5.2.8 I think . don't hold me to that lol.
Basically you aren't going to find that ROM update around after you unlock and flash the
box, its only shared on Amazon as source code and the available roms you would use
to restore are all pre rooted which usually blocks updates .
WHAT you NEED to do is search xda for unlocking and rooting fire tv 2 Sloane .
The process involves opening your box and shorting certain pins while you execute
Linux command and software .
Amazon purposely wants to phase out the usefulness and functionality of the fire tv Sloane , so this leaves users with a problem .
Closest ROM you can probably get to flash in twrp would be 5.2.7.6
For anyone looking to update the ROM beyond that , you would have to contact the
devs for help on a specific method to allow the updates again .
I'm sure there's a way to do it
I'm not a dev though , I just enjoy guiding people to see they find the help they need.
Peace.
