Why does battery saver turn off Wi-Fi? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Using Wi-Fi over LTE saves a ton of battery. So why does battery saver turn off Wi-Fi when it kicks on?

Perhaps it assumes that if you were near Wi-Fi, you'd also be near an outlet and you wouldn't need the battery saver?

You should have the option to deselect that feature. It's on by default but you can change that.

[Q] 3 Questions for Android Battery Life

Was wondering for android devices if having wifi on is best for the power.. as phones use power trying to find better signals. I have a wifi, and a good signal at my house, what should i use?
And also for battery life, when i hold the off button, there is an option to turn Data network on/off, if i turn it off, do i save power? Thanks!
Also.. is it bad for my phone if i swap between 2 batteries that have different levels of power on the at the time? like 40% and 90%? Thanks!
If you're at home with WiFi then turn it on and kill mobile data. WiFi can save more juice even if you don't necessarily have poor reception at your house. Your voice is still active. It's not like airplane which kills all the radios. But you can do that as well and still connect to WiFi.
As for the battery switching, I don't see why that would be an issue.

When out of range of Wifi, turn Wifi off, When in range turn it on for best battery life
There's an app called WiFi Status that I use. When you go out of a wifi range, it notifies you to remind you to turn off wifi. Saves a lot of battery, as wifi isn't constantly scanning.
I think it's justified to make it stay on for smartphones. And my Atrix's battery life sucks. Irony is - it seems to be the best smartphone battery (for an Android device, yet).
And honestly, smartphones' battery benchmark tests should only be done with Wi-Fi turned on..
I use an app called Y5 https://market.android.com/details?id=pl.polidea.y5&feature=search_result. The app can record your wifi zone, and will disable wifi when out of range, and re-enable when in range. It saves me time and energy when I get home from work.
use wifi at home.
Yes turn on wifi only when needed.

Power Saving Apps

There are many power saving apps, such as:
Green Power,
Juice Defender,
Battery Saver DX,
Battery Saver, and
Easy Battery Saver.
Wondering whether any of you use any one of them, and would make recommendations.
Please also what features you like about them. I am looking for one that can switch my phone from 3g to 2g when screen is off to save battery, but none seems to do that. They do switch of data and sync in every 5-15 minutes. But then I lose connection to Whatsapp.. and Gtalk.
thanks

Honestly, I used to believed that these "power saving" apps actually work but they don't. what they basically do is automate settings, toggle them between on-off, 2g-3g so on and so fort. These power saving apps actually drains more battery that it actually saves.
I suggest just do all these settings manually that is if you're worried about the battery life.
totally agree with zikor, i've used mostly all of these apps on my galaxy s2 and honestly i never saw a difference!
I do believe they consume much more than they preserve in terms of battery, cause toggling mob data and wifi on and of, drains the battery pretty fast.
I actually think it works I use juice defender ultimate and it works for me. Without using it my battery lasts 11 to 14 hrs but when I use it my battery lasts 16 to 18 hrs. Now, that is something.

I know a develop developed a power saving module for Cynogenmod rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739530 ) by TheMasterBaron that allows 2g to 3g toggle. This allows significant power saving as most of the syncing will be done on 2g. And it will toggle back to 3g when we turn on the screen, which usually means we will be downloading some larger files or surfing the web.
I wish there is something similar for Touchwiz/GS3.
In any case, I would like users to share their experiences with the various Power Saving Apps. Maybe we will learn something new.

If you have a rooted device, then try Llama. Awesome app. Works also on non-rooted device, but 2g/3g toggle won't.

I have a rooted stock running and 2g/3g toggle doesn't seem to work. Are there any special settings I have to check?
I just use tasker to do a few things like turn off wifi when I leave home, turn on bluetooth only when i'm driving - just a few of the things you would do yourself if you always remembered.

For less power consumption, choose one that avoids LTE, especially if you don't have LTE signal in your area. I use GSM/WCDMA. I get HSPA+ speeds all day long.
If you REALLY want to save power, choose the "2G Only" option... and be prepared to switch it back when you realize how slow it is!
Is there a way to disable cell standby when out of service or at least make it not cheeck so often, my house has spots without signal so standby is ussaly 10% of battery usage.

standby is important and cannot be disabled
you can disable your data connection when your in a poor zone manually, just get a widget like power toggles and its a one click button on your homescreen to toggle data on/off

Wifi Calling Battery Drain

Anybody else getting battery drain from wifi calling being enabled?
My wifi calling is on but when i go into power saving settings the WFC Setting is not there to show if it is draining battery.

It should be draining your battery. You are constantly broadcasting a wifi signal looking for other wifi signals. I turn off wifi period unless I am at a location I want it to be used at. The Wifi is the strongest RF generator on your phone and the one that creates the most drain next to the display.
It should definitely NOT drain your battery like that. Not even close. I use it all the time. You need to clear out the cache and clear data if possible. Force stop the app and reboot. Should be good to go.
I turn on the wifi calling at work, lowest I have seen my phone go to is about 50% at a 9 hour work day. Have no issues with battery life on wifi calling.

Does wifi drain battery when moving about?

At home using wifi. When at work or on the road, LG G4 uses LTE but wifi setting remains on. Question, does this reduce battery life? In other words, does the phone keep looking for wifi networks and drain the battery in the process? If so, should I find an app that turns wifi off automatically whenever leaving home?

I would asume yes it uses power always trying to find a open hotspot even if data is on. If u leave wifi on its on all the time. Prob in a lower power state just searching for open spot or known wifi . instead of downloading or streaming which bring it to full power.
I am going to try an app called wi-fi matic for the next few weeks. It allows turning off wifi radio when away from home. Let's see if it makes any difference with battery life.
