[Q] New to andriod

Hey guys!
I just recently gotten T-mobile's G2! I already got it unlocked by paying $8 to get the unlock code .
Soo, I have been doing a lot of reading regarding rooting, perm and temp, android , etc! I was a iphone 3GS user, so I don't have that much experience or any at all with android.
What is OTA? Does it mean "over the air" update?!
I am interested in rooting my g2. I checked the wiki out. However, there are couple of things I am not sure of.
First of all, what does stock rom mean? Is it like the original android 2.2 (fyro)? that is unmodified by T-mobile and other such carriers?
Did my G2 come with stock rom? or came with T-mobile's stock rom?
Also, I did update my G2 via "OTA" i suppose. How do I know I have the latest OTA? I am really confused about this part. I have checked various threads about it, but they were not able to clarify it for me.
Any links that would explain it, would greatly help me!

Haha that makes me laugh every time I see it

There's a lot of great reasons to root, but a lot of great reasons also to stay with stock (like warranty). You DON'T need root to use an unlocked handset with another carrier. Just the APNs for that carrier (see Android manual for how to add one).
So, that said, the XDA wiki under HTC Vision has a lot of great info on rooting and SuperCID and custom ROMs, as does Cyanogen's site.
Stock ROM basically means "official" or "pre-loaded" ROM -- the one that the phone came with.
But before you begin anything I strongly encourage you to Google what "root" means on Linux and what it allows you to do, and ask yourself if you really need root before you start trying to get it on your G2. If you're not a hacker and just plan on using apps from the market you probably don't need it anyway. But I'll leave that decision up to you.

Ok you need to set up an androidsdk environment. You need jdk for it to work. And while not necessary putting the tools directory for the sdk in the path definitely saves a lot of typing copying and pasting.

$8 isn't too but but you didn't need to spend that, the recommended method for obtaining root has an (optional) side effect of unlocking the phone. You will see this referred to as the "gfree" method.

Yes OTA means "Over The Air" when your carrier sends an update for your phone over the cellular airwaves it's an OTA update. These updates are official an only designed for the stock ROM.

A "Stock ROM" is simply the ROM that came installed on your phone, any phones updated by an OTA update could also be considered to be running a stock ROM. Generally it refers to the OS version your carrier and manufacturer want/expect you to have. This is opposed to a "Custom ROM" which is a customized version of Android, there are a number of different custom ROMs for the G2 each with their own features and capabilities.

Every phone comes with a stock ROM, by definition.

When a new OTA update is released, it takes a little while for the update to reach all the devices. There hasn't been a new OTA for the G2 in a while and AFAIK there has only been one so far. I would expect that if you just got your phone you would have received an OTA update within a day or two, and now would be up to date. As long as you are running a stock ROM you will receive new OTAs as they are released, if you root your phone but maintain the stock ROM (the state my own G2 is in right now) you would generally want to avoid installing any OTA because the update could cause you to lose root without the ability to get it back (if the OTA fixes the security hole that allowed root to be obtained)
Regarding temp vs permanent root. When the G2 first came out people had a hard time obtaining root, They first obtained "temp root" which persisted until the phone was rebooted. With a temp root any changes you make will be gone the next time you reboot your phone, because security settings of the phone prevent those changes from actually being committed to the phone. For example if you temp root your phone and remove the built in PhotoBucket application you will see that the app is back when you reboot next. Eventually they discovered how to obtain "permanent root" which will allow you to keep your root access across reboots and allows you to make permanent changes to your phone. An essential part of permanent root is defeating the security settings that prevent permanent changes to the phones memory. It should be noted that you first need to get temp root before you can get permanent root.

Just regarding the gfree method.... it does work quite well. But it did introduce a few unexpected quirks to my G2. I went back to all stock configs and decided I didn't need root so badly afterall. But it was nice to know how easy it was to do such a thing on a phone considered at one time to be unrootable.

[Q] Bootloader locked. Screwed?

I've got a new t807a from AT&T. According to the "about device" settings page, SE is "enforcing." My understanding is that this conclusively indicates that my bootloader is locked. It's currently running Android version 4.4.2, build number kot49h.T807aucu1ank1
I don't need a custom ROM and I don't care about tripping my knox counter (per se). I just want root. I've asked this in several relevant threads this week and gotten contradictory responses. Is there or is there not currently a method to root my tablet?
If not: is there hope? This is a great tablet but I can't live with the bloat for 18 months until I can afford a replacement. I CAN still return it and eat the 70-dollar "restocking" fee.

Just because it is enforcing, does not mean it is locked.
The s6 shows enforcing and for the T-Mobile version can be rooted with autoroot and trip Knox.

Locked bootloader aside, root can be achieved. Check the Dev pages for specifics/updates but this is the auto page link. You'll see the 807 is being tested but check back there often to monitor progress.

Thanks. I have been following that. Just hoping someone knows something I don't I suppose.

ATT=Locked Bootloader which there's not going to be root or anything. Same goes for Verizon. SE enforcing is Selinux. Most devices have that including my Tab S 10.5 WiFi with unlocked bootloader. SE is an protections or somesort (google it).
Since you have a locked bootloader, it will fail to flash modfied stuff to get root. It will only flash stock images. So you may have to return it. Just remember, don't buy from att or Verizon. Buy an unlocked model or Tmobile. Hope this helps!

I think you're telling me there's no way to unlock the bootloader and root is therefore completely unattainable. Is that right? If it's just a matter of "we haven't cracked it yet," I can be patient. But if you're saying there's really no hope, I'm going to be far less patient.
Is there no software solution (ie towelroot) that might help me get root without having to get past the bootloader?

Its a matter "we haven't cracked it" and no one is working on it. So basically almost to no hope and the odds of getting root or unlocking the Bootloader is really really low. There's no software solution like towel root that will get root or anything that doesn't mess with bootloader.
So there's no hope (unless some breakthrough happens).

I've got an easy working root on my t807A with kingroot. And yet there seems to be no custom roms available for it.
Slightly out of topic, does anyone have a install to SDcard solution? Nothing I find seems to work

The built-in app manager lets you move apps to SD but I also have not found a solution to install directly to SD (without repartitioning the card). After several months of despair, I'm just now checking back to see if there's been any development on the bootloader front. It appears not. You can get root with Kingroot (also check out supersume, if that's still around, to replace kingroot's su app with supersu) but apparently the bootloader being locked prevents any non-official ROM from booting.

New Verizon LG G4 VS98610B on build LMY47D.

Just got the phone a few hours ago and want to root it and install Xposed. But I'm not sure what's the best path.
So far it seems like VS98610B is an old version nobody is using and that if I root it, I won't be able to upgrade in the future without breaking the phone, is that correct?
If I go to "Check for new system update" it asks if I want to update to 11A. From what I understand from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64116024&postcount=362 is that I want to take the update, then after it installs that update, it should ask to update again to 13B? And that it is this 13B version that I root?
Am I able to unlock the bootloader on any of these versions? Why does it ask me to go to 11A instead of straight to 13B?

All I can say is that you are damn lucky and DO NOT update or flash a non 10B image of you have any desire to unlock the bootloader and use custom ROMs and such

Just my opinion but holding for a bootloader unlock is pointless and no you can't unlock it on any version. I waited for a year for the note 4 to get root or unlocked and never did. As days pass it's less likely we will ever see it unlocked on the g4.
To root take the OTA and get to 13b then follow the root guide in the forums....with root, xposed, and a little debloat this phone is awesome!

Awesome.that's what I was looking for. If it's already been since june and nobody has cracked it, that's not looking too good. My only worry now is why it's not taking me straight to 13b? It will take me to 13b after 11a right?
Also where is a good up-to-date root thread? There's nothing stickied.
If someone is on the verge of cracking the bootloader, how do I root this version so I can holdout, without killing my ability to upgrade in the future?

I'm also really interested in getting the fm radio working.that was one of the deciding factors when getting the phone. I did not know that Verizon crippled it.
EDIT: Also what's the benefit to upgrading? 10B is already android 5.1 so what is gained?

I never ran on 10B, so I don't know what benefits there were going to 11, however, 11 to 13b saw major improvements to touch responsiveness for most people (I never had touch issues on my phone, so I don't know on that count, but maybe I just never noticed); I also found that the phone performs a lot better and the battery lasts a bit more.

The rumored unlocked bootloader is vaporware. There has been no update on the status of it, especially for the Verizon variant. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/unlock-unofficial-bootloader-unlock-t3222737
I've already considered of foregoing the mythical v0 unlock bootloader (VS98610B firmware, aka 10B) and move up to VS98613B rooted to enjoy all the fixes to the phone. No point of waiting any longer without any updates.

Just found this... is it possible on N910A 5.1.1?

Just bought an AT&T Note 4 today, I was informed it had 4.4.4, but it instead had 5.1.1, and root had been a big part of all 3 previous Note phones I've owned, so I was looking for a way to do so, seems like nothing's been accomplished yet, until I stumbled upon this. Will this work on 5.1.1 even with that locked bootloader?

Im bot aure exactly what you are asking but from what i gather you are either wondering about downgrade or root. Either way it is not possible once the phone is on 5.1.1 you are stuck with only one way to go and thats up when and if an update comes. As for root its looking highly impossible to get our bootloader unlocked as at&t never released a developer edition of our phone which makes a reliable root impossible. I would recomend if you have the cash yo do so sell the at&t note 4 and get a tmobile note 4 which is unlocked and rootable

No it is not possible odin will fail because the 5.1.1 bootloader is secure and detects all attempts to overwrite or change it and stops the process. So basically you can not touch the bootloader downgrade or root or modify the system or kernel in any way unless the bootloader is hacked or unlocked period. Sorry
P.s. if it would have been that simple (boy do i wish it was) you would find a thread on here about downgrading to 4.x.x from 5.1.1 and not so many threads about root waiting room and things like that

I recently came across this article and its content intrigued me greatly. There is a "QuadRooter" exploit for devices using Qualcom chipsets. Maybe we can finally have root access on our beloved Note 4.

Sorry to break hopes an dreams... Exploits isn't the problem. We already have exploits to root. These exploits are just another way.
The problem is the locker bootloader and the kernel having DM-Verity. Once the system obtains root. The kernel reads that we have root which is DM-Verity than it removes root from the system. Which is why we only have a Temp root when we use Kingroot on 4.4.4 kitkat and 5.1.1 lollipop. This is why no developer wasted there time creating an app for root because we know it will only be temp.
There is no exploit for DM-Verity. Only way around it is with an unlocked bootloader, install a custom kernel with DM-Verity disabled. Now come Android 7.0 Nougat, verified boot (know as DM-Verity) will be "strictly enforcing" and won't allow your device to boot if the software has been compromised.

Well yes at least for most OEM manufacturers. I think Google is mostly doing this to help promote Nexus phones so they get a bigger market. Because if you have a Nexus or Oneplus you'll be fine with being SIM Unlocked and Bootloader Unlocked.
Personally I'll be upgrading in couple months with AT&T an I'll be giving this Note 4 back to them... don't see much point to keeping it if I can't root. An I'm upgrading back to iPhone because at least we all know Apple don't have much security an will have a jailbreak on iOS 10. They just got one on iOS 9.3.3 and other developers already have iOS 10 beta 3 jailbroken.
Android is still more open than iOS in the since of having SD cards, file management, being able to download from your Internet browser, running emulators on your phone like gbc, gba, ds, psx, etc. Unzipping / Opening RAR files. They just don't want you to have system access or management. I wish that we wouldn't have natively locked bootloaders as mandatory requirement for succeeding Android versions. That way, even if mainstream brands decide to lock all their phones, we'll still have those from the likes of Xiaomi and Oppo as options if you need or want root.
But, if it were the case, then I think we'd be better off with iOS with all the ecosystem that comes with it, along with fewer segmentation for developers, not to mention awesome accessories and even casings that iOS devices have.

It's been a while since I flashed a custom rom, but been trying to get caught up again. From what I've read, the bootloader is lock in our AT&T Note 4. Isn't this the bootloader?

I am too jumping ship from android, if I'm going to spend some serious cash on a phone, it shouldn't be locked down, my daughter just received the iPhone 6s and loves it, I want full access to my phone again, been rooting for yrs
