How, without root / flash?
I use Notification Toggle: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.notificationToggle
I think it's the best one because of its customization options and the fact that I can download stock ICS icons for it. Plus, you can add apps (free, included in app) and shortcuts ($0.99 add-on). Like I have the shortcut for my AudioManager Pro Profile list in there and an icon that runs the Lockscreen app (saves pressing the power button to shut the screen off).
I'm not rooted. The only useful thing root would give me is the ability to directly toggle GPS rather than having to go to the settings page, but considering I almost always leave GPS on, I don't really care about that.

+ 1 for that......im using too and it is awesome.....
elixir2 does this also...
I also prefer Notification Toggle over Widgetsoid. Stock icons and the ability to always have it at the top of the notification screen. My only complaint is that it's a little laggy when tapping thru the brightness settings.

Much easier to install a custom rom than an app right? lol
Anyway, +1 for Notification Toggle. I was using Extended Controls for it but Notification Toggle is much better since it stays on top of other notifications and it also replaces the Battery Widget that I was using to display the battery % in the bar.
so have any of these been updated so that i don't have a constant icon running in my notification bar? i don't know why but that's a dealbreaker for me.
btw, i'm not rooting yet until CM9. temporary solutions without the annoying notification icon?
Thanks OP
Forgot about widgetsoid and how awesome it is. Between this and Nova launcher gestures I now have the perfect setup for my home screen because of this.
Swipe up - brings up the app drawer
Swipe down - brings down the notifications
Home button press while on the homescreen - brings up voice search
Any idea how to change the colour of the battery icon in the status bar using the Notification Toggle app? I want to change it to ics blue.

+1 on this. What's worse is they'll give the option for no icon, but then it just leave a blank spot in the notification bar.............
That's a limitation of Android, so until Google offers a better way, that's how it has to be.

Constantly using assistive light, but I dislike having to unlock, then click the widget (which is HUGE, and thus not on my first page)
What are your favorite solutions for quickly accessing flashlight from lock screen?
What you could do is buy Widget Locker ( something like a $2 app, i knoow, not free ) and then add a flashlight widget to it. If u look up widget locker you will know what im talking about, but in essence, its a customizable lock screen and u can put widgets there to click on.
Alternativly, some ROMs will have the ability to have a flashlight as a quick tool when u pull down the notification shade. Paranoid Android 2.1 has this ability, and it is Jellybean. Great daily driver, and also stable. Give it a shot!

Exactly what I've done
I haven't rooted/flashed anything custom to mine yet as I'm waiting for JB before I do that, but I've got widgetlocker installed with the jellybean style unlock orb - pull right to unlock, left for camera, down for gosms and up for 'brightest flashlight free' which is the fastest loading of all the ones I've tested (plus it has a cool on/off sound that reminds me of splinter cell lol)

No need to unlock the screen to get your Torch App.

Hit "Thanks" button if it help:highfive:
THANK YOU for all the great suggestions, will try a bunch of stuff and report back.
I had read that Widget Locker drains the battery quite a lot though, have you found that to be the case on the S3?
So far I was using brightest flashlight free from lock screen, but it opens the app, I basically want to stay on the locksreen for toggling on/off.
LED genius concept is nice, but I'm afraid it will keep opening in my pocket when I shake my hips (seriously, I'm already using shaking to silence the wonderful eCID app when it is speaking)
I've a bunch of stuff to investigate thanks to you all! Cheers!
Get the app called TeslaLED it has a cool and easy on/off widget as well as a shortcut which you can put on the lockscreen. I like this app cause it doesn't need all kinds of strange access/permissions like the others do.
Quick update:
Tried all that was suggested. Ended up using Widget Locker + assistive light widget on lock screen. While the widget is not very pretty, t'is the fastest way to launch the led I found (slightly faster than teslaLED for me).
So far, Widget Locker doesn't seem to drain the battery too bad. And it is very sweet to have more than 4 shortcuts on the lock screen
high
my solution
you download teslaled apk free
in setting to lockscreen your put the app on the lockscreen
and in the setting of teslaled you select "start light when app is open"
and now on the lockscreen you have the icon teslaled you pullup and the flashlight come
sorry for my very bad english!!!!!
see you soon
You should check out Search Light
It's the fastest starting flashlight app on my phone (Galaxy Nexus). Much faster than Tesla. And no silly permissions like internet and positioning like some flashlight apps need.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scottmain.android.searchlight
Maybe that in combination with widgetlocker? I don't have widgetlocker so I can't vouch for the combo.
On my SGS II, I use a ROM with JKAY support just so I can have this lockscreen: youtube.com/watch?v=JL-sc2QlNtA
As you can see around the 16 second mark, you just need to slide that tab left to toggle the LED. I'm not sure what the status is on JKAY MOD on the S3 but I know he is making a version for this phone, so check it out.
Regarding this topic, just to add one other advanced method (which I am using) is to combine Tasker, Widgetlocker, and teslaLED with the S3's proximity sensor to control the LED flash.
Basically you turn on the LED flash on or off by putting your finger near the proximity sensor which is on the left of the front-facing camera.
**This method is not necessarily faster than using a widget, just a heads up to those people who are using tasker and widgetlocker, that this is one possible implementation they can use.
The reason i did this was because the widget on the lockscreen sometimes activated from accidental pressing in my pocket which resulted in huge battery drainage and a hot phone.
(Another reason was that I was bored and wanted to do something with the proximity sensor, and this was a pretty cool way to do it, plus you have one less widget on the lockscreen if you find it ugly)

Yes Tasker and teslaLED would be sufficient, however Widgetlocker is there to set up the condition for this profile to work. So this profile only activates IF widgetlocker is running (that is when your phone is locked). You could do without this condition if you wish, however do note that without such a condition, the proximity sensor will remain on indefinitely, which would cause a huge battery drain to occur. By setting it so that it requires Widgetlocker to be activated, the sensor only turns on when the phone is locked.

A little late to the party. Flashlight LED genius is free and also has a 'shake to activate' feature. Hit the home button to turn on the lockscreen and shake. it has sensitivity options to avoid accidents.
Nexus One LED Flashlight
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jazzmoonstudio.android.widget.flashlight&hl=en
Fastest and simple one click flashlight widget. If you want to start it with an app shortcut you can install the addon. It is very lightweight, has no running services and stuff. I always return to this one.
Seriously, try it!
Thank you!
Nexus One LED Flashlight is indeed the simplest solution! Shortcut available as addon from Google Play for TouchWiz plus needs no suspicious or permissions (as of dec. 2012).
Thanks fallenwout!
If it's fastest way, I'd go with Jkay's mod, don't think it can get faster than this. It has an option where you can press the home button once to wake up the phone and press a second time and keep it pressed for a second to light up the led. Phone will remain awake but you never even need to unlock it. Turn off by keeping home pressed for a second again. It has helped me a lot.

Definitely the most simple solution witch is btw an awesome feature, same like double press home on lock for camera.
I vote for Led Genius, but it is really "user dependent" and i will explain why.
I use a phone case that actualy cover the screen, it's a leather flip-case. In case i want to open the flash light, i press the power button without opening the case and then i shake the phone. The light turns on. Since you have the sensitivity adjustable and the fact that if you don't press the power it will not interpret no matter how hard you shake it, it is virtually impossible to activate it in your pocket by mistake. (my power button is not side-accesible other than using your finger)
This method allows me to operate the flashlight without even looking at my screen (or at the phone for that matter), and to turn it off exactly the same: without opening the flipcase. Once i finish with the flash light i am shaking it again to stop it, then i press the power button to turn off the screen and that is all.
Just my 2 cents...
I use Tesla led in combination with appshaker. Shake phone on lockscreen turns led on.

Sorry if this exists somewhere else (I exhausted my search keywords and couldn't find it).
I am a recent convert to the ZL side and, for the most part, really like the phone. One thing, however, that I really liked from the Samsung Galaxy device I came from (and even the iPhones before that) was the quick way of locking screen rotation. Is there a way to bring that functionality into my ZL? On the Galaxy Note I had, all I needed to do was bring up the notification slider and select Screen Rotation lock. On the iPhone, if memory serves, I doube-tapped the home button and went all the way to the left and select the lock icon. On the ZL, I have to go into the settings, then into the display setting, then click on the Auto-Rotate screen option.
I appreciate any advice.
Thanks!
Install this and select the rotation toggle and check the others.. They are cool.

I recommend installing "ScreenRotate (Small App)"
It will add rotation toogle to small apps bar (which shown when you press task switcher button).
Its more convenient that having to pull down notification bar, take space in notification area or having to go to homescreen to use widget.

So awesome. A shame I can't five you more than 1 "Thanks"! The phone has now reached super awesome status.
Another widget i decided to share with you peoples
I noticed by default there is a "Assistive light" widget for us to put on the home screen. It toggles the flashlight on or off. Well its really dim so i wrote my own widget to do the same thing. This one however gets put on the lockscreen so just swipe over and tap and boom you got a light
May add options for light levels.
Should work on all GS4 variants, only tested on T-Mobile variant.
TO INSTALL:
Simply install the apk, then in your app drawer look for "Flashlight options" and click it to set up your options. (The icon is a flashlight btw xD)
UPDATE 10.28.13:
- Added levels adjustment
- Remove widget and re-add to update after installing new APK
Then create your widget on your lockscreen and profit
Works perfectly thus far and exactly what my phone has been missing. THANK YOU!!

Same for me! Prolly gonna add the brightness buttons to it soon too.
What do you guys think? Three buttons, one for dim, half, and full brightness? Or a positive and negative button to adjust brightness in one by one increments? I think the three buttons would be quicker to adjust the brightness.

Any way this can be added to the lock screen where I don't need to swipe to get to the widget? Ideally, I'd hit the Home or Power button to turn on the phone, then either use your flashlight widget, or swipe to go to the home screen. I'm a beginner on playing with the lock screen, but a flashlight like yours (excellent job on the 3 settings!) is really the only thing I'd like to access that quickly.
Any way to use this as a home screen app? Ever since I've been on Android, I've missed the 3-level flashlight I had on WinMo 6.5 on my old HD2.
Great effort on this, thanks!

You can tap and hold my widget on your lockscreen and drag it to the RIGHT most "page" on the lockscreen and it will be the first thing you see when you turn on your screen.
Meaning, tap and hold my widget on your lockscreen, and move your finger to the right of your screen until you see the gray squares stop moving.
Thanks, elesbb! Got it working. Now if I could only get the big clock I normally see to show along with your light, it would be perfect, although it seems only one widget per screen is allowed? Again, I'm a noob about lockscreens.
You really make some cool additions to the phone.

Yes, only one widget per screen, currently working on an app that will hold a widget within a widget (not looking to promising) so i may have to edit the actual smali files itself to add say two widgets per screen. (thats something i REALLY want) so once we finally get a sammobile tar of 4.3, i will be working on mods for my ROM and that is one that i widh to add.
All my recent phones have been Oneplus phones (5 and a 5T) and there is always an option to change the order of the recent and back buttons, I tend to prefer them the opposite way round .....but usually not an issue to change, but I cannot find any button switching on the recent and back buttons.
Also is there a option to make the recent and back buttons just drop off the screen when surfing , on the 5T you can assign a gesture so just flick up from the bottom of the screen and the buttons appear, which is really useful when reading a website as it gives you more screen to view rather than losing a centimetre from the bottom of the screen.....but once again I cannot find such an option.....anyone know how or if this can be set ?
Other than those and the battery percentage not showing ( I just use an app instead and turn the battery icon off) I am enjoying the phone, but those two fairly minor things would be nice to work out...
Probably you need root to do this on stock Android (there is already a pre-patched Magisk boot.img for the A2L). Then an app or a (still non-existent) Magisk module will do the trick.

Not yet, but as I said above, if you search in the development section (very easy, there is only one thread at the moment) there is a user that posted a modified boot image that includes Magisk.
If you flash that image via fastboot and then install the Magisk manager apk, you'll be ok (there is a link to a guide in the same post with the boot image).

HI , The only issue with the link is that it explains for rooted then has a link for non-rooted which takes you take a page of 24 pages full of different hacks that do not seem to explain how to do this for non-rooted phones.
Do you have a direct link to the non-rooted method please.

for the guys who don´t know if you press the settings button on the navigation bar bar about 10 sec ( keep doing until a new option appears on system menu) called interface tuning or similar that you can tweak the status bar
You can use "custom navigation bar", using adb instead of root.
