[Q] No IMEI on stock ROM, Network Unlock fail on DN3 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Model : SGH-I317M
Network Locked: Rogers
I was running the official Samsung ROM with CF auto root. I made an EFS backup (Using EFS backup Pro) soon after completing the root.
A few days later I tried to flash the modem on my phone to enable AWS bands. After the process my phone got stock on the logo screen.
Then I downloaded the stock ROM + modem from samsmobile and restored it using Odin. The phone boots fine but has a null IMEI and baseband version. I tried restoring EFS using EFS backup pro and the dd command but no luck.
Then I tried the DN3 rom. My phone works perfectly. It boots fine, the network works fine, IMEI is correct!
The problem now is that I cannot unlock my phone. I have tried ordering an unlock code from 2 different websites. Both of them gave the same code. When I insert a different SIM and enter the unlock code I get a message "network unlock unsuccessful". The support team for one of the unlock sites told me enter the code from the UTMS debug menu. The problem is that this menu is not accessible in the DN3 rom. The other company (Koodo) refused to unlock unless I was on the offical ROM.
I tried opening nv_data.bin stored in the EFS parition and it is all 1's. Hence, My suspicion is that DN3 reads the EFS data from a different partition than the offical ROM (dev/block/mmcblk0p3 .
You could help me in 2 ways : Show me how to unlock my phone in DN3 rom. Help me get the offical ROM from samsmobile working.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

So this is a koodo phone, correct? And you had previously unlocked via the service menu?

No Its not a Koodo phone, it is a rogers phone. It has never been unlocked before. Koodo can unlock phones locked to other carriers as well. I took it to them because they were offering free unlock service for new customers. The agent at the kiosk could not find the UTMS menu so he said he could not proceed with the unlock.
I have also tried getting the unlock code by paying a website $20. I tried entering the code but the unlock was unsuccessful. Their support team said that they can only support people using stock ROM and refunded my money.

[Q] after restore phone now locked.

Hi
So I had the GB AT&T rooted stock rom installed unlocked and using it with t-mobile in the UK.
I followed the instructions here on how to install CWM and asked it to do a backup.

I then followed instructions here to install full lite rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890125
Booted it up and then found the phone had become relocked to AT&T so booted back into CWM and restored my backup.
Now I'm back to normal but the phone is saying its still locked, whats gone wrong?
Thanks

SGH-I747M from bricked and no IMEI/ESN to working!

Hi,
After several days trying to unlock my phone and getting it bricked I finally managed to have it in a working condition and unlocked! I'm not sure if what I did unlocked it, but at least it's rooted and in working conditions.
So I decided to share my story and all the steps that I took to fix it. I would have written just the steps but somebody might find specific parts of the story useful.
Original Equipment and Status:
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M (LTE version)
Carrier: Telcel
Country: Mexico
Original Stock OS: 4.1.1
Last working OS: Cyanogenmod 11 Nightly 20141221
Backstory
I'm having a roadtrip that will take a couple of weeks and I got a TMobile SIM to use during my trip through USA and Canada, however my phone was locked to Telcel.
CM brought me some couple of issues with the modem and network selection and as I live right next to the border and cross it every week or so, I was having a hard time switching between carriers and international roaming so I have to upgrade the modem to the latest one (From I747MUMBLL1 to I747MUMUEND3) and for some time I was able to select network operators but still it was locked.
No USSD / Unlock Code Fail
I found on the web there is a way to unlock SG3 for free through the hidden menu, but it didn't work for me but found out USSD codes no longer work in 4.3 so I restored the stock ROM for 4.1.1 (I have no idea how I managed to do this, but got it downgraded) I was able to get to the hidden menu and followed this instructions but I kept using multiple modem versions that aren't for JB the hidden menu didn't gave the option to generate the nv_date file. I think this was due the use of newer modem versions that didn't have the option to initialize the file.
Next attempt was to purchase SIM unlock codes without success, the providers I attempted were TheUnlockingCompany and CellUnlocker, neither of them were able to get me a code to unlock the phone
Also attempted to modify the NV_DATA file but well, it didn't exist in the /efs folder, there were other files but nothing related nv_data.bin. So I really needed to have that file to unlock it but no success in initializing it.
Third-party local unlock dealer
As all the attempts previously failed I needed to have my phone unlocked and was running out of time. So I took it to a local dealer who has more experience unlocking phones. This part I don't have all the info in whatever he did, all I know is that he was unable to work with CM and attempted to unlock it with a brasilian stock firmware, which got it bricked and it was getting more difficult to unlock it.
AFAIK I did have the old bootloader, but his attempts included upgrading the bootloader which includes KNOX and any attempt to restore old rom versions gave me the error SW REV CHECK FAIL : Fused 1 > Binary 0 therefore it was impossible now to get back to stock 4.1.1 and attempt the older modem versions which at this stage found out could have solved the original unlock issue but .... too late.
His attempt with the brasilian stock ROM got the phone bricked and now instead of trying to unlock it I was trying to revive the phone, all my attempts in bypassing KNOX and downgrading the bootloader failed - also attempted to get back to 4.2 and 4.3 through CM 10.1, 10.2 and stock 4.1.1 but bootloader was too recent which prevented me to use those CM versions.
I was able to get it unbricked using CF-AUTO-ROOT - this is a life saver at least to be able to boot the phone, everytime I get a bricked status just by flashing this allowed to boot.
Phone kinda working: NO IMEI NOR ESN
Finally I decided to restore but directly to 4.3 stock for my original provider Telcel. The phone works now... kinda. It boots and gets signal, but NO DATA. I just found out IMEI/ESN information got lost and I didn't have any backup, yes I know I should have but whatever I was doing at least was not touching that information, but this other guy got it messed up.
One interesting thing is that even though there was no IMEI information, but original SIM card works to send/receive calls and SMS. Data doesn't work, but at least calls and SMS does.
Phone included KNOX and was preventing me to use the previously mentioned tool CF-AUTO-ROOT and found this tutorial: http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-safe-knox/352922-sprint-galaxy-s3-possible-knox-fix-cf-autoroot.html - this actually works but didn't give me the option to remove KNOX.
THe problem now is that any attempt to use SuperSU through USB debugging was blocked by KNOX but apps opened directly from the phone weren't, with this I installed CWR right away and TitaniumBackup, this last one allowed me to uninstall any KNOX crap. Rebooted the phone and no more issues whatsover in root usage.
As I only have 1 remaining day to have this phone in working conditions and it's christmas today I went on in trying to rebuild my IMEI.
Rebuild IMEI WITHOUT BACKUP
After lot of research and no friends which the same phone that could give their nv_data files, I found out THIS guide (again USSD codes not working so I used EFS Pro to switch USB modes) and basically this is what I did:
Download EFS Professional - Epic tool to work IMEI/ESN info and switch USB mode between MTP+ADB and DEV+MODEM+ADB
Download QPST version 2.7 build 323 NOTE: USE THIS VERSION, NEWER VERSIONS DO NOT INCLUDE RF NV Item Manager
Follow the instructions in the previously mentioned guide, but the USB you can switch it from EFS Pro under Samsung Tools.
It is really important to notice the IMEI number needs to be entered with the HEX checkbox enabled and in reverse.
You probably could do this straight from EFS Professional -> Qualcomm Tools, but this worked for me.
At the end of the guide there was no confirmation or any message the NV information was written successfully, so I just rebooted my phone and success! IMEI is back!
Just to test I tested my T-Mobile SIM and it works! - I'm not sure if this unlocked the phone or whatever the other guy did, but well the phone now accepts any SIM.
No Data / Stuck on EDGE
Now that the phone has the IMEI number and is unlocked I found out DATA still was not working.
I used the tools ESN, MEID and EUIMID Calculator to generate the rest of the missing information which was ESN and MEID. I entered this information in EFS Pro -> Qualcomm NV Tools, checked the boxes and clicked on write making sure the select box next to it was set to Phone.
Rebooted my phone and yes the information was there, however STILL NO DATA.
I came across this life savior - Load this file with NV Item Reader/Writer Some people on the thread say even their already working LTE data achieved better speeds with this.
Rebooted my phone and wallah! DATA and LTE are back! AND UNLOCKED!
What did I learn from all of this? DAMN KNOX and ALWAYS ALWAYS backup /EFS or whatever IMEI/ESN/MEID info is, even if you plan to use custom roms or not, or unlock the phone.
Link to useful tools and sites
CF-AUTO-ROOT - Fix a failed ROM update attempt in ODIN and/or apply permanent root.

Network Unlock on a D852

Hey there,
I am having some issues with unlocking my D852. The phone is locked to Rogers, and I'm trying to get it over to Telus. I'm in the stock ROM, with the Telus Sim card in it, everything appears to go smoothly after I enter the unlock code. To verify I go into 2945#*852# and check all the menus, the phone is not personalized, and I'm successfully connected to the Telus network. Afterwards I try to restore from a backup, CloudySix, the phone boots. In the status bar its saying that my SIM Card is Perso Locked, and is prompting me for a SIM Network Unlock PIN. I tried entering a few codes, NCK and SIMCK without any luck. I dont want to enter any more codes in case I lock myself out completely.
I have unlocked before, its been a few years, but I have never run into this. Shouldn't the phone be unlocked permanently, no matter what ROM you flash. Maybe I have to flash a new ROM from scratch? I tried restoring CandySIX CM13 edition and the new AOSP based so far.
***EDIT: I forgot to mention, I reverted back to stock, and I get a prompt for the unlock code again.
I just got a Galaxy S6 from Telus and I'm really not happy with it, it feels like a downgrade to me. Hoping you guys can help me out
When you restore your backup are you restoring the EFS partition as well? I think that is where the unlock is stored (at least that's how it is on some phones).

Yeah, I was doing a full restore, EFS and Modem. I tried flashing a ROM from scratch just now and that worked for me. The only problem after that was that my WIFI wasn't working afterwards. I might have to continue messing around with it, making progress though!
Thanks for the help

Got it all up and running, after an hour of troubleshooting I discovered that the WIFI wasn't working because the AP needed a reboot lol. Through all this though, I discovered the importance of the EFS partition, it stores alot more than your unlock data, its best not to touch it
How were you able to unlock the network sim.

Returning to stock rom from CM 12.1 to Android 4.2.2

Hello
I am currently running CM 12.1 on my SGS3 i747m.
I want to return back to stock rom, the current version offered by Rogers is Kit Kat 4.2.2.
Is this considered a downgrade? (from CM 12..1 to Android 4.2.2) Will I brick my device?
Is returning back to stock rom the only way I can network unlock my phone?
1) it is a downgrade in android versions (lollipop to kitkat. not bootloader/modem).
2) no , will not brick your device as long as not downgrading bootloader/modem.
3) what is your current bootloader/modem version ? (if unsure , you can DL the "samsung info" app from playstore and it will tell you).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609045
here's the xda thread for that.
4) i belive its the only free method. i think you can pay for an unlock code and not have to return to stock.
5) if returning to stock , here are directions posted by @audit13

"err on the side of kindness"
So you're telling me I do not have to revert back to stock in order to network unlock? =D
That was my only reason for reverting back to the stock rom.
correct. but i've never had to unlock one so i wouldnt know where to go or how much the code cost.
"err on the side of kindness"
***update: i just bought an unlock code
didn't work. my phone says perso lock.
sigh
if i revert my phone back to stock rom, does the recovery have to be reverted too? or it's all good.
Recovery can be custom or stock. You need to revert to the stock Samsung dialler in order to enter an unlock code.
Easiest method would be to flash the latest 4.4.2 stock Rogers rom from sammobile.com, skip through the set up, power off, insert non-Rogers sim, boot phone, enter unlock code, done.
could I install stock rom via recovery or does it have to be through Odin?
so... I tried to install the stock rom via Odin3 as instructed on Sammobile... but it gets stuck in the glowing Samsung logo during boot.
any ideas?
try thru recovery :what:

Did you perform a factory reset/wipe in stock recovery before booting the phone with the newly-flashed rom?

i can't access stock recovery
I pressed power+vol up+home button. nothing.
although i get into download mode
i tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...13-nightly-t3356062/post66306367#post66306367
and doesn't help =(
Are there any error messages in Odin? You're flashing the correct firmware?

So I went back to flash the latest stock firmware... and I was able to access the recovery and wipe cache and then factory reset/wipe! it worked!
=D
but I am having the same problem I started. I couldn't unlock my phone.
I entered the unlock code I got from MobileInCanada.com... and it still doesn't work.
I see that there is a free method for Android 4.1.1.
I am currently running Android 4.4.2
From Phone INFO app
Bootloader Version/PDA/CSC/Baseband: I747MWLUFOB3
Do you think I can revert back to Android 4.1.1 and try the free method? Or should I complain to the MobileInCanada about unlock code not working. Seeing as it looks like going back to stock, everything should be easy as pie to network unlock.
So you flashed back to a completely stock rom, inserted a foreign SIM card, you were prompted to enter the network unlock code, and it didn't work?
The imei in the phone matches the imei provided to mobileincanada? I have used mobileincanada but it was a long time ago. I get all my unlock codes from eBay because it's cheaper.
Do not attempt to flash any rom that is 4.3 or older as attempts to do so may hard brick the phone. Once an i747m is running a 4.3 or newer bootloader, the phone can only be unlocked with a code.

Yes! completely right! I inserted my foreign SIM card, entered the unlock code from MobileInCanada and it didn't work.
I double/triple checked the IMEI.
Mobileincanada has a very good reputation. I recommend contacting them for a refund or have them resend the code.
Thank you!
would it be a different code?
If you supply the same imei, the code should be the same. Perhaps mobileincanada looked for the wrong imei in the unlock database.

Network unlock code provided by ATT not working.

I'm running Android 6.0.1 OctOS-M I747UCUFNE4. I insert a different (non att) simcard and turn the phone on, see the screen to enter the unlock code that ATT provided, but it says the unlock was unsuccessful. What am I doing wrong here? Am I supposed to enter some sort of prefix before the code? I've already emailed them about it hoping they'll be some help.

Usually you need to be on a stock dialer for this to work.
Your best bet is to make a nandroid backup of your current setup, then find enewman's stock rom that matches your current bootloader/modem and flash it. Boot up stock, enter your unlock code, then you can restore your OctOS backup.
AT&T unlock requests can be made here: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/unlockstep1
