You need to allow your FTV to update to 51.1.4.0_user_514006420

Ahh Thanks. I wasnt aware of this. I wanted to stay on the lowest firmware just in case a new root exploit comes by.

Yeah.. Would of been recommended but seems FW 514005520 was beta or was just bad FW. Just keep a daily eye out @ AFTVNews.com is the best/quickest site to keep up to any major issues or guides for any US/UK/GER FTV'r.

Hey there,
just got my Fire TV today (German Edition) and I would like to know if I have anything to do before I set it up...I want to root it later when it is possible.
So should I avoid any updates or something like that?

I just made a firetv for a friend yesterday but I'm in the US so not sure if its the same but this is what i did.
I started the firetv and got the update. it auto updated first to an old rootable firmware. and said there is a new update.
I installed towelroot and rooted it and disabled the updates.
then follow the instructions here to get the latest firmware that is rootable. worked perfectly for me.

The German version comes with 51.1.3.0 which is currently not rootable. So the best you can do is block updates (there are tons of threads here on how to do it with DNS and whatnot) and hope a bug is found in the version you currently have.
Right, I just plugged in my new Fire TV and I cannot progress without Upgrading. I have logged on to my router and I have the IP address of the AFTV . Is there anything I can try remotely (via SSH perhaps) to bypass the upgrade?
Thanks in advance.
hi,
i dont have one yet but done some research and you can do the following:
Block Connection to amazon servers
Enter your router settings page and block access to the following pages:
Code:
http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
http://softwareupdates.amazon.com
Unsure this will work on the UK version though
Could you let us know what FW version comes with it?
I had already blocked those pages, and I also tried just blocking the second page. Both had the same effect and resulted in me not being able to progress with the install.
This also means I am unable to report the Firmware version.
To add to this, I inadvertently unblocked the websites after rebooting my rooter and the FTV updated itself.
I am on Firmware Version 51.1.4.0_user_514006420 and cannot root. Hopefully someone is working on an exploit for this, but in the meantime I'll be using it without root.
What's root good for on these things anyway!?

Don't feel bad about inadvertently unblocking the website. There is currently no known method to block the forced updates on newer Fire TVs. Units that ship with 51.1.3.0 or newer are now all forcing the first update during setup.
If the Fire TV displays a language selection prompt during setup, which I assume yours did, then it is already running 51.1.3.0 or newer software.

Grr! My UK version just arrived, and it will not let me do anything unless it upgrades. I so wanted root for USB access!

It doesn't really matter. It ships with an unrootable version to begin with.

This has been known since the German release. You just got to wait & hope for a new root method.
So I just bought a new AFTV and am trying to root it but for whatever reason I can't seem to find a working download link for towelroot. Towelroot.com isn't working whenever I click on the red logo and I have tried using google but that's no good either. Can anyone help. Btw I'm new to xda developers and have tried looking around the forums for an answer but couldn't find one so I apologize if this is something that has come up before.
You need to check your FW version first and make sure that you have a rootable version.
Most likely though, if you didn't at the least block updates before turning the unit on, then it probably updated to the latest un-rootable FW.
Depending on where you live and/or where you bought your AFTV it may have come with un-rootable FW, so towelroot is not going to help you.
My FM is rootable. I blocked any incoming updates from amazon. Running FM 51.1.0.1_user_510055620. Just trying to download towelroot.

aftvnews.com has excellent guides and links to rooting and more.
Here you go....
Has anyone gotten Miracast with Windows 8.1 to work with the firetv? I've heard that if you update to "Pre-Rooted 51.1.4.3" you will loose netflix if you have SPMC/Kodi installed? I just want to proceed with caution but I sure would love to have miracast from my laptop. This is the only time I wish I had a mac to use airplay but I do hate the macs.

Wait you lose netflix if you have spmc/kodi? I am confused by that comment and not sure how its relevant to the new update... you're saying the new rooted firmware will remove access to netflix if you have spmc/kodi?

I've been reading a lot of reviews on the new firmware and there are lots of reports that with the update to the new firmware and xbmc / kodi installed, there are issues playing with Netflix. There are also reports that state that without Kodi, Netflix works just fine.
I just updated to the new firmware and am curious to test this but I'm too lazy/cheap to buy/cancel Netflix. Where did you read that this was an issue.

does Miracast work for you with the latest update?
A coworker gave me a rooted (towelroot) fire TV sw version 51.1.0.1_user_510055620. After I hooked it up to my WiFi and registered it with my account there's no apps on it and it won't allow me to download Netflix. What is my next step? How do I get this thing up and running?

Do you know if CWM is installed? Im thinking the netflix available on Amazon is incompatible with your old firmware.
Basically, i youre going to want to update to one of rbox's prerooted firmware versions. Its not hard but you do need to follow the guides carefully. Best bet is to go to aftvnews. He breaks it down really well.
I'm not sure. How do I check? I also need to update the xbmc to kodi (I've started to search!)
So far I've only been able to unlock the bootloader but I can't push the recovery.img for some reason. I hope there's an easier way by now. Lol

just follow this guide up to the point of your existing software and then update to the latest custom rom by rbox.
