[Q] Apps see internal storage as read-only? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Using TWRP today I wiped dalvik and cache, then fix permissions. On reboot, apps see internal storage as read-only. For example backup folder settings in Titanium show internal as non-writable, but external is OK. Swiftkey can't update language modules. Other apps have similar problems, think a permission is messed up, anyone know a fix? Thanks.

I had this issue and the only fox was to wipe using kies and not root. When I started using root and xposed, etc, that's when that started occurring.

Been rooted, xposed running with wanam, external card writable, phone running fast, still running well with no lag. Believe it's a simple permission issue messed up fixing permissions in TWRP. Might have to just Odin stock and start over.

I would recommend posting this question in the TWRP thread. I just had the same problem after wiping and fixing permissions. I even tried restoring the backup I made before hand with no luck.

There is also a kit kat fixer app in the play store that will make the SD card writable for apps. You need root though.

I had to use kies to wipe the phone, rerooted, now it works fine.

Follow those instructions. But I think you have to start clean.

Used the full tar with Odin from shabbypenguin, my apps remained, cf-root, then flashify TWRP, all is well again. Just won't fix permissions in TWRP until corrected.

As Darkman mentioned, there is a fix for the SD card issue in the Play store, called NextApp SD Fix. After having just attempted an unsuccessful Titanium Backup of my Note 4 to a "not writable" SD card, I searched and found a posting about this fix and just finished installing it. After a reboot, problem solved! The fix does require a rooted phone, so if you're unwilling to forsake your warranty, given rooting will trip the Knox flag, then you'll have to deal with the frustration of keeping some space free in device memory for apps that would otherwise use the SD card, and move files to it manually as needs dictate.

To clarify, fixing permissions in TWRP makes INTERNAL non-writable, external works fine, the app you mentioned fixes external SD card write permissions.

Oops...attack of tunnel vision. Thanks William.

I have the same problem. =(
(But actually I'm using a Galaxy S4, SGH-I337M. Exact same problem)
I flashed an AOSP ROM then restored my Stock TouchWiz backup. From now, the apps can't write to the internal storage
I did fixed the permissions but when the problem started to occur. I don't remember having fixed the permissions before the problem showed up.
So restoring factory from Odin would do it?
Then can I restore my current TWRP backup, or will the problem show up again? Is this happening exclusively with "Fix Permissions" ?
Thank you very much
EDIT: This fix worked =) Even if it was intended for the Note 3 and I have S4.

Hey GameX2 good find, yeah Odin worked but this fix is much easier/faster!

Awesome fix, I had this problem for weeks. I odin NK2 stock and re rooted and still had the same problem..that Terminal fix saved my life.
Thanks again

App only read
How to make data from one app to be permanent, and they can not be erased with factory reset? it's possible?

For those having issues with TB, have you tried this option:
Storage Provider: Document Storage Provider
That should fix the R/W issues to the SD card.
Also, I believe MM has the SD card as read-only as a default. You'll have to go into app permissions to allow access to the SD card on a per app basis if you're not prompted for it. I had that issue with Hangouts where I wasn't able to change the notification sounds and I tinkered around with the app permissions and enabled access to the SD card and fixed my issue.

(SOLVED!)[Q] App install fails with DT A2SD & CM6.1.2 through Titanium Backup

I've tried to search around for some info but had no luck. I am also not allowed to post in the DT A2SD thread as I do not have a high enough post count. The problem is this:
A few apps that I am reinstalling from Titanium Backup are failing to install. I just partitioned my SD card (32gig class 10) to a 1gig EXT4 with a 32mb swap. I'm only moving apps and kept the Dalvik on internal memory for now. I started to restore my apps through Titanium Backup and the restore goes fine for awhile but then does a soft reboot toward the end. I've attempted this twice and had it happen both time. I am able to finish installing most of my apps when it turns back on except for 4. I get a failed to install from Titanium backup and the market when i try to restore them. My guess is that there is some partial installs from the soft reboot that are already on the EXT partition preventing them from installing. Any idea to a way to get these apps to reinstall again? Thanks for any help!
Cyanogen Mod 6.1.2
Darktremor Apps2SD 2.7.5.3 Beta 03a
Titanium Backup Version 3.6.7.1
Edit: Just moved Dalvik to SD and still no luck
Edit2: Solved! Delete the smdl2tmp1.asec file from your .android_secure folder on your SDCard
Edit3: By deleting the whole .Android_Secure folder I am able to install apps after it has issues with rebooting the rom after an app install.
Hope this helps someone!
I just had this happen with a few apps. I went into Settings/Applications/Manage Applications and found some let overs which I then removed, which allowed me to reinstall.
The one I had was actually the XDA App. I found the com.tapatalk.xda file (something relatively close to that) removed and was able to reinstall.
Good luck!

I checked in there and the apps are not showing in manage applications either. Thanks for the advice tho.
Yeah I didn't have the full app in there either but I did find those com.* files when you look at all apps that seemed to be related.
I probably just got lucky and found that one to be the problem.

I even double checked for the com files and only have a few android ones that do not seem related to the apps in question.
Solved: I ended up having an error installing a new app from the market and got a error 18. Found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755970
I was unable to remove the file in terminal so I just booted into recovery, mounted my sdcard, went into the .android_secure folder and deleted the smdl2tmp1.asec file there. By doing that I was able to install the app I wanted and install my older apps from the market. Didn't even bother using TB to restore them just in case.
Hope this info helps someone else!
^^Nice work!
Glad you figured it out.
I mentioned I also had an issue with the rom rebooting after installing apps. I deleted the .Android_Secure folder and I was able to continue to install apps again. Just a FYI if anyone has the issue.

[Q] Going Nuts with "Application not installed"

What is going on with this. I am on caulkins el29.
I have just installed it and I wanted to put Digitalclock.apk back on the phone.
I tried one I downloaded.
I tried one that was in my apps backup..
I tried one that was in uninstalled system apps.
Nothing works.
I even tried pulling my external sd card. I tried installing with the cable plugged in.
I tried unmounting and reformatting my sd card.
Nothing will get this stupid app to install. I have now dedicated 4 hours to trying to install a clock.
Does anyone have an idea of what is happening? I am on an epic touch, rooted with caulkins el29

Same thing. None of the apk's on the sd card will install.
I've used root explorer to copy and paste it into system apps. Changed permissions to rw-r-r and sometimes need to reboot.
I have the version from an ics theme that has the green replaced with blue.
If youdd like to try that one I can upload and post.

Well that didn't work... I see a lot of posts from people about this issue, but no one seems to know what's going on.
I don't know then. I'm on Caulkins ICS and have just copied it over.
May be stupid question as I'm sure you've tried everything but did you try deleting the old first?
Sorry it didn't help.
none of the system apks (put in the uninstalled folder) will install.
stuff on the market installs fine.
Gotta get root explorer bro, always works for me use the same method with it and be sure to toggle read/write settings, if not, make sure you have full root access and not partial, you may want to reflash the rom too.
Getting errors while trying to install apks from the Removed_App/system_app folder on the Bare ROM?
Be sure to install them through ADB, root explorer, etc. Don't try to install them by clicking on it like you would a normal apk
Ex. ADB command
Code:
remount rw
cat /sdcard/Removed_Apps/system_app/App.apk > /system/app/App.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/App.apk
chown 0.0 /system/app/App.apk
reboot
Copied straight from Calk.
i have the same issue, some of the stuff from titanium back up wouldn't install, and the same files won't install from the market either.
these are some of the stuff i've tried but yet failed
1. wipe cache and delvic
2. tried on other ics roms
3. formated sd card.
4. rebooted the phone.
it justs says, couldn't install on usb drive or sd card.
I would really like a fix.
it happened ever since I've install ICS. i do not feel like going back to GB
1. because of chances of bricking.
2. because it's a hassel.

Sorry, Titanium Back Up..= tbu.
Open Titanium, menu, prefrences, scroll down to "App Processing Mode"
Once you open it there are 3 choices. Direct, Indirect and a third I cantt remember.
The FAQ for Titanium recommends indirect if you have problems during restore (like it hangs).
Not sure this will help. Did for me on an app so thought I would offer.

[Q] Corrupted /Data w/ Working Note 2 -- What to do?

Currently running stock 4.1.1 on kernel 3.0.31 - 260018, but I will get the same error "unable to mount /data" as in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966105&page=9. I want to install jellybomb rom.
The problem is that if I try to flash to stock, I will have no backup of my data. I cannot backup because my /data partition is not accessible. But my device is fine and functional with stock. And I'm really quite new to the android modding business. I'm not sure if there's an exact copy of the pda and pit shipped with my carrier.
Can anyone advise me what to do at this point? I don't want to brick my phone, and I read online that a corrupted PIT file means even after recovering from stock, that corrupted part will always be there, and limit the storage on the internal SD.
Thanks.
I have the same problem but don't know what causes it. You can use Titanium Backup for your apps at least. You can use ADB to backup everything to your PC. Haven't bothered to fix the issue with my phone because I've been happy so far.

Yes, like you say, Titanium Backup is a great way to back up data. Also, I noticed that an app called "Root Uninstaller" does the same thing (but doesn't contain system data).
After tinkering around with different apps, I noticed that ES File Explorer was able to access /data on the internal card. Is there anything I can try to do to resolve this issue in this way (note that TeamWin can't mount /data, so we can't do terminal commands this way)?

You will also need system write protection off to keep that, so would recommed via that recovery.
You can also push the file manually
adb shell
mount /system
push platform.xml /system/etc/permissions/
Doesn't work. I tried to change Platform.xml, but after reboot it's going back to previous state.
Do it from recovery.

HTC does not allow writing to the /system partition unless from recovery. To disable this, flash a kernel w/ the protection disabled http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705613 Or you can manually install this module: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701816 After installing either of these, you can use any app posted above to gain write access to external sd.
(FYI the writing to sd card was disabled by google in recent versions of kitkat for all devices)

Another fix for anyone else having trouble.
Nothing above worked for me. It was frustrating when all other relevant apps could write to the extsd card including file explorer programs.

Titanium Backup, save to external SD card? (E980 AT&T)

Searched and found some info on the above in regards to other phones, but the solutions did not work for this phone (or maybe just for me):silly:
Rooted with Towelroot, and Chainfire for the Superuser last week. Installed TiB, and checked in one of its menus to use the external SD card for automatic backups (I believe).
So, I perform a full backup of all apps and data, but I had been having issues with a bad install of Go Launcher so I decide to do a phone reset (to KK 4.4.2) and restore with a fresh OS.
Upon reboot, the phone automatically Dl'ed all of my Google info and apps, contacts, and everything, all by itself. When the phone rebooted, I was surprised to see that I still had root, but without SU. Did another restore just to be sure and reinstalled Towelroot manually. There must have been an update to it since last week as the SU was automatically installed this time and I had SU without needing to install Chainfire. I reinstalled TiB and attempted to do a TiB restore, but learned that all of my backup info had been stored on the INTERNAL SD card and it was all wiped with the phone restore.
So, I go back into TiB settings and try to redirect the storage location to the EXTERNAL SD card by hitting the back button when looking at the file structure, but when I get to the external card, TiB says it's not writable. Some other phone threads mentioned to use the MNT directory but that didn't work either.
So, after all the above, can anyone either talk me through how to get TiB to store externally, or possibly would you provide a link if you know of a thread that allows it to work with our phones (E980 on AT&T). I've tried a few things mentioned on different threads but none of it seems to work!
Strange, I always use the TB for my backups and I have 3 automatic settings and does everything on the SD card without problem. I do not think there is a tutorial for that friend, you already have a backup folder? to copy to the SD memory and let that TB to detect it automatically. Sorry for my poor english
Have you tried manually editing the platform.xml as indicated in this post?

Thanks for the info. I followed the link and tried to modify the platform.xml file but the 3 file editors I used would not save the changes. I kept getting errors. Then I saw a link to an app in the app store, tried it and it worked perfectly!!! It modified the platform.xml (and saved the changes, which I was unable to do). The only thing I then had to do was go back into TiB and manually create a "Titanium Backup" folder in "/storage/external_SD".
I ran a backup and checked the SD card and the backup is there where I had hoped it would be.:good:

I had the exact opposite experience. The app didn't work for me so I just manually edited the file with Root Explorer. Glad your issue is resolved.
