I noticed that Google Search (OK Google) only works on the screen where I placed the search widget. I know that in July, Google enabled an option to voice launch a search from any screen. My G3 has never had this option. I've tried everything from searching "OK Google Everywhere" to installing UnleashTheGoogle. Still doesn't work. Does anyone else has this issue, or do you know of a solution? Almost all searches for solutions are dated July, didn't work or are deadends.
Thanks in advance!

I used to use Nova Launcher, but I prefer the LG widgets (especially the calendar). Thanks for the suggestion though.
Are other G3 users experiencing this with the stock launcher?

To get Ok Google to work from any screen you need to change the phone's language to English (United States), then switch it on in the Google app's settings under Voice, Ok Google detection.

Set your Google Now's primary language as English (US) and the feature will start working for all screens.
The feature only works for a few selected languages.
It's the Sprint variant (LS990), and aside from being rooted and bumped,it's completely stock. Again,
I am set up for US English, so that's not the problem.
Thanks!
Just say OK Google...

After you saw you had English (US) 2 down in the same menu it should say "Ok Google" Detection?
When you click on that i takes you into another screen that gives the option to check - From Any screen.
I did this and then went to my other screens. There was no microphone or any indication that anything was added since most other screens were full of icons, but i just said Ok Google and it worked from all screens.
Good luck!

I've got a Galaxy S6 & have the same problem. Following the above steps (including English US), the "Ok Google" detection screen has only "From the Google app" and no other option. There is definitely no "From any screen". Did anyone ever figure out how to fix this?

Just started having this issue yesterday too. I'm on a G3. Always had this option before. I'm guessing it went away with the latest update for me? Any luck yet?

It was fixed about a week or two ago, for the S6 anyway. We just needed to update the Google app to get the options back. I personally had to uninstall & reinstall to get it to take, but it works now. Except it will no longer be usable from a locked screen unless it's charging. They appear to have removed that feature on purpose, probably because of the S6's poor battery life. Best of luck with your G3, I'm afraid I can't help with that.
I'm running an LG G2 with the resurrection remix ROM (Lollipop 5.1) and having the same problem. I used to have the option on the same ROM, but awhile ago I tried out a few other ROMs and now come back to resurrection, and the option to detect Google from any screen is gone. Just as OP says, I only have the option to do it from the Google app.
My main language is set to English (US).
Fixed
Alright, here is the fix that i was able to find on my mom's G3. After an update the "ok google" detection from any screen stopped working and would only allow from search. Here is what i had to do to get it to work. Under the google settings, go to accounts and history. Then go to google account history. Mine went straight in to activity controls, which is where you want to be. There is a setting there title "voice and audio activity". This was switched off on the phone. Turn that back on and all the options to launch "ok google" detection from anywhere should be returned! Worked on the G3 i was working on so hopefully it works for you. GOOD LUCK!

Google Search - Latest Update
v3.1.8
Changes:
It officially brings Search version 3 (3.1.8 to be exact) that shipped in KitKat to all devices running 4.1+. This includes an updated UI, new refresh animation, among other things.
Because Search houses the Google Experience Launcher (GEL) inside, this update also brings GEL to all devices running Android 4.1+. All you need to do after installing Search 3.1.8 is install the launcher app from here, and voila - GEL for all, not just KitKat devices. I have it running on 4.1, 4.3, and 4.4 on both phones and tablets, and it finally looks perfect.
As I mentioned above, 3.1.8 completely fixes the wonky GEL layout on tablets. As you may have seen yesterday, several things on the Nexus 7, for example, were out of whack - the keyboard was popping when you tapped Home, the icons were old, and the Search box was off-center. All fixed.
Remember: GEL does support transparency in the navigation and status bars, but you need KitKat for that to work. And Google disabled it system-wide on the Nexus 10.
New cards:
Website update card
News topic card
What to watch card
Traffic incidents using Waze on maps.
Recurring reminders.
Real-time scores for rugby teams
See when your packages are ready for in-store pickup.
You can now bring back dismissed cards by pressing Undo.
Download
The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.
File name: com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-3.1.8.914827.arm.apk.
Version: 3.1.8 (Android 4.1+).

I figured it out. I went and installed English(US) from the "Offline speech recognition".That seemed to do the trick for me. lol
As a last question, anyone know how to access the HTC one widgets? I can't see them under the widgets section.
i get google search force close with GEL . Xperia S 4.1.2
Works for me on Android Revolution 31.5, but is there a way for this to replace the locksreen? It's awkward with this launcher but the Sense lockscreen.

As soon as i did that i get all the cards back including the new ones
I just updated Google Search and skipped GEL....The new Google Search works flawlessly on ViperOne 2.7
Great all working. " Ok Google" works only in English US. Hope will be quickly available in French.

Just received the official update and works great.
I get a "placeholder text: google search not found" when i try to launch GEL, but I have everything needed installed

Not only is Google announcing all sorts of stuff today, but it's also updating a slew of its apps (it is Update Wednesday, after all). Today's Google Search update brings a huge improvement: "OK Google" hotword detection to any screen...even the lockscreen. This lines up with the earlier rumor that it was coming eventually.
Once enabled (Google Now > Settings > Voice > "Ok Google Detection"), you'll have to say the words three time in order for Now to register your voice – much like setting up the hotword detection on the Moto X and recent Droid devices. After that, it works beautifully. You can also choose whether or not to have it work on the lockscreen.

I can confirm this nonsense limitation, using US VPN does the trick, deactivating it makes the behavior return normal (Ok Google only from Google Launcher)... the strange thing, however, is that the "Audio History" option remains.

I faked a connection from the United States using a VPN, and after a while the "Audio History" option popped out in the Google Now settings... I activated it and the options for Google Now on every screen and the lockscreen popped out too in the "Ok Google Detection" settings. When I disconnected from the VPN, these settings vanished after few minutes.
However, it is possible to activate this things without a VPN enabling debug/dogfood settings with the Google Quick Search Box Debug module for the Xposed Framework or the UnleashTheGoogle apk posted by the user Coggy9 in a comment on Android Police:
androidpolice.com/2014/06/25/apk-download-google-search-v3-5-14-brings-ok-google-hotword-detection-to-any-screen
coggy.euroskank.com/APKs/UnleashTheGoogle.apk
After that, "Force stop Google Search once UTG has ran, then go into search settings, then config flags. Enable both e300 toggles, add your country code(en-US for USA) in "speaker_id_supported_locales". Save the config by tapping save config settings at the bottom." (copied from the aforementioned post, and you can do the same with the Xposed module). The problem is that, after a while, one of the two manually activated toggles switches off, and you lose that functionality again.
By the way, the most interesting thing, in my opinion, is that switching on the multiple_voice_languages toggle enables Google Voice Recognition to understand you in multiple languages contemporary, answering in the language you used to do the question.
Sorry for my bad English

Brief Guide:
*Install google play services and google search app from first post
* Download and install unleash the google
* Open unleash the google apk and grant super user permission
* Now force stop google search
* Modify google search settings
*Scroll through this next list of settings until you find one titled e300_voice_everywhere. Toggle this to ON, then two entries below it, toggle the enable e300 option to ON as well
* Open config flags and Scroll down a bit more (the entries are in alphabetical order) until you find an option titled speaker_id_supported_locales. Tap it, then in the following box, type en-US (yes, this feature is US English-only at the moment)
*Now, scroll down some more and tap the Save Config Settings button. Finally, back out and tap the Google Search field for your changes to become active
Enable hot word detection
*Now head back to the Settings for Google Now, select the Voice menu from here
*Next, tap the OK Google" Detection entry and make sure From Google Search app is ticked. Then tick the box next to From any screen (as well as From lock screen, if you want that functionality)
*This will automatically launch an initial setup process designed to train Google Search to recognize your voice. Accept the terms and conditions, then on the next screen, say OK Google three times with your phone at about arm's length
*You are now ready to trigger a voice search from any screen, inside any app. The hotword detection even works with your screen off, provided your phone is connected to the charger
*This is a killer feature, in my opinion.Running it on my phone for three days now, I haven't noticed any discernible battery drain

Google is enabling the option account by account, so it could take a few days, but eventually everyone will have it. I got it yesterday.
For those of you who just can't wait, though, there's an apk called 'UnleashTheGoogle' that will enable it. Basically, you install the apk, force stop Google Search, then re-open it. This allows access to test/debug/developer menus, and will let you manually enable the new hotword detection features. I don't remember the specifics, so search 'unleashthegoogle' to find the apk and the full instructions.

My question was not posed as a response to yours. Don't worry I got it figured out for my Note 3.

For mine, after I installed the 2 apps, opened google now, went to settings, went to "Voice", went to "OK Google detection". Checked the top 2 options (or the 3rd as well if you use a secure lockscreen) then trained the voice model. It works good for me.

This was such a cool feature but 2 things I didn't like. First it won't work with the screen off unless the charging cable is connect. Second, it drains my battery. Anyone else notice more battery drain?
I haven't noticed any significant battery drain, but I haven't left it enabled for more than ~10 hours at a time, so I can't say for certain.
I, for one, am glad it doesn't work with the screen off. If it did, I'd have to disable it permanently or else my asshole friends would be screaming "OK Google" every 5 minutes lol

Haha. I know what you mean. My a$$hole coworker is always saying "hi galaxy" to turn my phone on. Although OK Google can be voice trained, it can be triggered by anyone. But it would be so much useful in my car when I'm driving and not have to plug the phone in. That's the reason I bought a spare battery so I can swap back and forth without having to ever charge my phone.
But I still think google voice still needs some work though. It would be nice for it to be able to read my messages out loud and can respond by voice and it tells me what my response message is so I don't ever have to take my eyes off the road. I'm using Utter app which does what I want but it too drains my battery specially if I have always listening enabled. For now I just just manually launch it and it doesn't affect my battery at all.

What I have found is if enable Google Now then Voice Control does not work. If I disable Google Now, then Voice Control works.
from the screen- select Apps - google folder - google setting- search & now - turn on google now and follow the instructions

this happens frustratingly often when issuing voice commands to google assistant at home. I have all the smart lock features enabled. anyone got any ideas? i've googled and enabled all the suggested settings related to this.

I agree.... very frustrating, especially when my clock can do it without needing to be unlocked
I'm experiencing this as well but only when I use one routine I have and I don't need to unlock it the routine runs but I get the message. Weird!
All you need to do is go into the Google app itself settings , Google assistant,

Enabling every single one of those options still doesn't allow, for example, lights in the Home app to turn on. As described earlier, you can initiate the process without unlocking, but it won't proceed until you actually unlock. Thanks anyway.
yeah I have all those settings activated already. still does it unfortunately.
Me 3!
Only way to fix this is to use Smart lock or buy a nest mini.

The OP mentions trying smart lock and it wasn't any help.
Nest Mini is a good suggestion, but personally, I keep my Mini's microphone switch always off. I want to do everything by phone. Maybe the OP will like the idea better. Google should just fix it, though.

I should mention, I had to add my location twice into Smart Lock to work and now it works perfectly.
I also have to ask, what is the point of the nest mini with the mic off? The speaker is very low quality compared to other speakers in its price range.

Doorbell, cheap (I got one for $15 and the other for $20), and my wife is happy with how it sounds just fine.
I've got a Denon receiver for the high quality needs.
Since it comes with a physical switch for the microphone, I'm sure there are others who feel similarly.
i've tried doing the boxing trick with smart lock location ie 4 separate location points around the corners of my home location. I used to do that with my samsung. i'll see if that helps. stupid bug tho that should just be fixed.

Oh, another reason is they're very small, you can buy mounts that make it so you can just plug it into the wall and the speaker is held right there above (or below) the wall socket, so it's out of the way.
adding further smart lock points made no difference. nifty trick from google. this particular facility doesn't fully work, so you're pushed towards buying a nest or two.

Did you add and remove your location more than once? That's what I had to do and now my smart lock works flawlessly. It turns on right when I walk in my door and off just a few feet outside it.

smart lock in general is working, but I still randomly get asked to unlock my device when issuing voice commands.
I am having this issue as well. Just switched from 4a 5g to a 6, and ever since then I very frequently hear "but first you'll need to unlock your device", even when I never said anything that even sounds like google. Plus it interferes with me using my dedicated assistant devices in my house. I don't want to disable assistant completely on my phone, because I use it while I am out and about, but if it is locked, I don't want it to respond at all. All of the toggles mentioned in the screenshots here are unchecked, yet it still does it.
Same issue here. I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and it does this all the time. Have anyone tried to suggest a "feature request" to Google Assistant team? Maybe this can be a future enhancement as this is such an important and common use case. I'm thinking that if it really want to be secured, maybe it can trigger something like:
sure, but first you'll need to unlock your phone. What's the passcode? Then if you are driving and can't type in the passcode, you can then just "say" the passcode, etc.
Thoughts? Thanks!
