ok, something really simple somebody may be able to help me with, not sure if its possible, but i want to store a few images onto my fire tv, so i can use them with my xbmc setup as wallpapers, my device isnt rooted, as its the uk version that got sent out today, ive installed dropbox, and es file explorer but their is no option to save. anybody know if this is possible? its driving me crazy. ive also tried uploading with the amazon cloud drive app, the pictures show up on the photo section on my home screen, but thats it... is their any way i would find these in the root access?
thanks
I think you should be able to use adb to push them to the SD card. Try one of the fireTV utility apps for a GUI.

Connect to the Fire TV via ADB (WIndows guide and Mac guide)
Then use the command:
Code:
adb push C:\path\to\image.jpg \sdcard\
This will transfer any file from your PC to the \sdcard\ directory of your Fire TV. Root is not needed.
You guys are the best... Thank a lot!

The command is slightly different between Mac and Windows. The command I gave you is for Windows. Here is what you should enter since you're on a Mac:
First, change to the directory where you have adb by running this command:
Code:
cd /Users/channy/Desktop/platform-tools/
Then move the file to your Fire TV by running this command:
Code:
./adb push /Users/channy/Desktop/platform-tools/wallpapers/Breaking-Bad-Simpsons-2362199.jpg /sdcard/

Awesome. Glad you got it working! And glad you're enjoying the site.
Here are a couple tips:
If you move the adb file from the platform-tools folder into your /Users/channy/ folder, you can just open terminal and start running "./adb" commands without first doing the "cd..." command.
Also, on mac you can drag and drop files into the terminal window instead of typing the full path to the file. For this case you would type "./adb push ", then drag the image onto the terminal, then type " /sdcard/". Note the space at the end of the first part and the beginning of the second part.

Even better.. Thankyou for that info. Whilst I caught you online.. Little off topic but do I need to block OTA updates? I plan on eventually rooting when/if it becomes available. And if so... The only way I can do this as I'm on stock firmware would be to use the block domain methods with my router?

If you have any interest in rooting it's always best to block updates. At the very least that way you can choose whether you want to install the update or not.
If you're not rooted, your best option is to block the update domains via your router. If that isn't something you can do, you can always sign up for a free OpenDNS account and block the domains that way. You would just need to enter the OpenDNS DNS IP addresses into your Fire TV's settings, just like in this guide.

Don't drag it to the terminal.
I would navigate to the directory where you stored the SDK and go to the tools folder and run it that way or you search up how to set your PATH to include the tools folder.

Like the others who have already replied, I also did it on my mac and was a complete noob. It was only through much trial, error, YouTube, and 3 other sites that I figured it out. Needless to say I'm now fluent in adb and would be happy to answer any questions you have since I was in exactly the same shoes as you last weekend. Below are the biggest things you need to know when you start:
1. When you plug the phone into your computer make sure you select "Charge Only." If you select "Use Phone as Disk Drive" you won't be able to write to the phone, only read. I ran in circles for a long time getting "Read-Only File System" errors and it was all due to having the phone mounted as drive.
2. Make sure you have USB Debugging turned on. After that, you should be able to communicate with the phone fine.
3. ADB - The instructions are nearly identical regardless of operating system but on a mac you need to add "./" (without the quotes) before adb commands. For example, lets say I have a file on my desktop called "Test_File.img" that I want to push to the root of the sdcard. On my Mac I would type "./adb push /Users/Bryan/Desktop/Test_File.img /sdcard/" (without the quotes of course) & (Bryan is my Username)
4. To avoid any issues make sure none of the folders or file names you are working with have spaces in the name.
Hopefully all this helps and does no lead to more confusion than when you started. Again, if there are any specific errors you are seeing post them here and either I or someone else would be happy to answer them.

If you're going to be using adb on a regular basis, and want to avoid typing "./" before each command, you can add the android sdk tools path to your .bash_profile file in your home directory. Something along the lines of:
export PATH=${PATH}:/path_for_ur_sdk_folder_location/android-sdk-mac_86/tools

It should... although I use vi instead of nano. Regardless, after saving the .bash_profile, you'll have to fully exit the terminal application and restart for the path setting to take effect. After that, it'll be in effect every time you start terminal.

Since we cannot get to other sources to install an app on firetv I've been using adb and my win7 pc.
I think I saw another method posted, installing apks already on tablet. I could not find it, and I don't think it used this method. My apologies for not crediting someone else if that's what I'm doing.
I installed "AnySend" and "Terminal Emulator" using adb and pc.
I sent app via any send to firetv.
Ran terminal keyboard very helpful if not needed
Used ls and cd to navigate to Any Send dir.
adb kill-server
adb start-server
"daemon started"
adb install "side loaded apk name"
If installed "success"
ls list directory contents
cd "name" changes directory

Thanks for replies. I'm lazy. I see an app I want to install. I send file from my tablet to fire tv using any send. Many other programs will work I just like this one. open terminal, navigate to install directory, use adb to install. Seems pretty simple.

So, by going into the settings menu of the FTV and toggling the ADB Debug flag, this allows for installing via a push from ADB.
The text that is displayed when changing this value also says that by enabling the setting, it allows for package installs from unknown sources.
Is this not quite the case though?
Using ES File Manager, when selecting an apk package located in the downloads folder on the device, the message shown in the attached screenshot appears.
Since there's no way to do so from the front-end, I am assuming that we will need root to change the flag to truly allow installing from any source?
Any possible way to do this without root?

Yeah, this isn't currently possible for the public. There is a root exploit(s) already developed but they have not been released yet. The developer, jcase, said he will release an exploit on the same day the upcoming Fire TV update is pushed (the exploit will not be compatible with the update so if you want it you'll need to follow the instructions in the other thread for blocking OTA updates).

Not at this time. Amazon disabled side-loading of APKs from the device itself. Root would be the only way to get around that.

several days ago it occurred to me to alternatively use sshd for terminal access, because:
-a) I feel a little unsafe leaving adb wifi enabled all the time (ok it's only a small thing to turn it on and off, but still) - and for security reasons there is no way to enable/disable it programmatically e.g. from a script/shell/terminal/app (well theoretically this is not exactly true, but practically it is)
-2) some people (i.e. me) would like to do shell/terminal remotely sometimes, rather than on the AFTV (and other people don't have/want a keyboard)
ssh access makes a great alternative to Term.apk, but the problem is:
- Term.apk and/or (pick your favorite android ssh server) don't have permission to run e.g. "pm install foo.apk" - it will fail. (btw 'pm' is a great command, take a look sometime at all the options. it shares a lot of functions as the adb command itself. 'am' is another fun command...)
- so, the hilarious workaround of enabling adb wifi, "adb connect", and then finally "adb shell" or "adb install" etc., is still required. (b/c the adb user is in the 'shell' group, among others - giving it permission to run /system/bin/pm) - oh well.
for random reference:
Code:
127|[email protected]:/ $ id
uid=2000(shell) gid=2000(shell) groups=1004(input),1007(log),1009(mount),1011(adb),1015(sdcard_rw),1028(sdcard_r),3001(net_bt_admin),3002(net_bt),3003(inet),3006(net_bw_stats)
[email protected]:/ $ exit
[email protected]:/ $ id
uid=10009(app_9) gid=10009(app_9) groups=1015(sdcard_rw),1028,3003(inet),50009(app_40009)
(also note it appears the adb shell user might possibly have 'mount' abilities, but since the /dev/block/sd* nodes permissions' are really locked up, who knows...)
I am having issues. The first time I tried this I thought it was a success as I went through the steps and got the loading screen on the fire tv to come up. I waited for about 10 minutes and then the firetv reset but Kodi did not install.
Now I am trying to do it and when I hit enter after the string to sideload the .apk nothing happens. I get no response in the terminal and it just goes to the next line. I cannot figure this out for the life of me.
I am using terminal on a mac. This method http://sideloadfiretv.com/sideload-apps-amazon-fire-tv-mac/

Try the additional "-r" option during install ('-r' means reinstall the app, keeping its data).
For e.g.:

I haven't used that because I am running into all kinds of issues. First I got the "Can't create log file" error. I googled that and see that I need to drag the app onto the desktop or into the applications folder. The problem is when I try to move it I get another error message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items". I feel like such a newb with this Mac. I have no clue how to troubleshoot.
any help?
Any chance you have a Windows PC connected to your network that you can try? I did this (http://sideloadfiretv.com/sideload-apps-amazon-fire-tv-windows/) and had no issues.
If you can get ES File Explorer onto the FireTV, then you can go to Network/Cloud and add an account, connected it to a Dropbox account, then just download apks and open them from ES File Explorer, you won't need the PC or adb any more.

Can you even connect to the aTV?
Try some ADB commands to see if ADB does really work:
Code:
adb devices
This should list all via ADB connected devices. If the list is empty you´re not connected.
When your device is connected try some basic shell commands:
Code:
adb shell
This opens a bash shell. Within this shell type
Code:
ls
and the directory content of the actual folder should be listed.
ADB shell can be left with:
Code:
exit
If this isn´t working, check your ADB version you have installed and try to install a newer/other one. I had such an issue once on Windows with an Android tablet which couldn´t be connected with the ADB version I had already installed on my PC so I took another ADB version and it worked. Of course this shouldn´t be but it seems that this can happen.
Another hint might be your problems regarding adbfire. Perhaps your user restrictions prevent ADB from proper working. I´m not firm on MAC´s but I think they support the "sudo" command (explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudo). So try your ADB commands again with an additional sudo before similiar like this:
Code:
sudo adb install kodi.apk
I can't figure this out - I am following this (http://sideloadfiretv.com/sideload-apps-amazon-fire-tv-mac/) perfectly and I got it to work the first time but it just didn't complete it for some reason and now every time when I hit enter on the last step nothing happens.

WTF? why isn't the method through terminal working?

I don't know...on mac you need to use ./ unless you configure it otherwise so to connect I'd type ./adb connect myipaddress
If you are connecting then you have adb working. I use adbfire but here's what I'd do...
I like keeping my adb folder with platform tools on my desktop. Put the apk you want to install in that folder
type "cd" <space> then drag the whole folder into the terminal--hit enter
now type ./adb connect youripaddress--hit enter
if it says connected type ./adb install<space>then drag the apk from inside your adb folder right into the terminal--hit enter
If you did it right nothing will happen instantly. It depends on how fast your connection is. Wait up to 5 minutes I'd say and you'll either get a success message of an error. If it's the latter, post it here.
Did you read my previous topic and tried what I´ve written?
Forget this Howto since it is just a general guideline and it can´t help you with your actual problem since it is more or less a first time installation guideline but you have already had a previous installation which makes the difference. It can also not deal with restrictions on your system side for e.g. if ADB wouldnt´be allowed to access USB.
If you´re sure that your system is not restricted anyway and ADB should work and if you still prefer to work only with this guideline do a factory reset within your FireTV. This should set the box in a state back again where this guideline should work how it is intended.
Or try SPMC from Amazon App Store which would be the easiest way:

Batch files are for Windows only.
The easiest way to do this would be to put all your apks into a folder, along with the adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, and your batch file.
Have them enable ADB on their stick, and give them the folder. Here's an example of a batch file that would make it dead simple:
Code:
@echo off
set /p ip="Enter Fire TV IP: "
adb connect %ip%
adb install apks\example.apk
<other code here>
adb disconnect
This would be the example file tree:
Code:
| adb.exe
| AdbWinApi.dll
| example.bat
|
\---apks
example.apk
Then give this folder to the person

That only works if someone is on my local network though. If I push all of the files to someone including the batch file, would you be able to run the batch file on a firestick?

Are we able to use ADB commands on a shell script on a firestick? Looking at a gethub .sh file for use on firesticks it looks like they are?
For simplicity sake here is a scaled down version of the goal. I want to put kodi.apk and terrarium.apk onto their firestick for them. I want to be able to connect via teamviewer and push a folder over that contains:
kodi.apk
terrarium.apk
a shell file
The goal is that either the shell file is triggered somehow or the person with the firestick in front of them runs it and it does the equivalent of what I can do from my computer with the batch file using:
adb install "kodi.apk"
adb install "terrarium.apk"
I tried googling shell script on a firestick and didnt have any luck besides finding the github of a firestick loader that i searched through.

You don't need adb for that, I'll write you a script example later...
By the way, you could also execute adb commands if you reinstalled adb before (Amazon deliberately removed this). Do you have root rights on the sticks?

ok, here is the example, that you can customize.
Code:
#!/bin/sh
pm install /sdcard/kodi.apk
pm install /sdcard/terrarium.apk
You have to save the sh file in Unix format (linefeed as line ends). The easiest way is to save it in Notepad++ as a Unix script file.

I tried saving as .sh and also as .bash . The firestick gave the message that there is no program to run it. How can I make this runnable on a firestick

Code:
sh file.sh
or
Code:
chmod 755 file.sh
to make the text file executable, and then run
Code:
./file.sh
Google isn't your friend, is it?

I did try to google but didnt google the correct thing apparently I tried Googling "how to run Unix File on Firestick" and a few variations of it with no luck. I appreciate all of your help though for sure!
Trying to figure out where to run this on the firestick, after googling it, it seems like I need to get to a command code somehow to run this? I was hoping it was executable. Can I make it executable on my computer and then when I push it to the firestick just click on it and it runs?

You cannot shortcut a sh file to the Fire TV gui!
Use View attachment Terminal-Emulator-1.0.70.apk to manually execute a sh file.
If you want to start it by pressing a button I can recommend Terminal Shortcut, only this version View attachment Terminal-Shortcut-Pro-4.11_MOD.apk still works with the Fire Remote. Here you can include scripts accordingly. I have modified the version so that it cannot be updated by a newer one
